Matt Law of The Express also suggests that the Arsenal winger will not be in England’s 23-man squad.
If true, it’s a big surprise: many saw Walcott’s selection in both warm-up games as confirmation of his place in the squad. On reflection, it seems Capello was giving a player he has enormous affection for a final chance to earn a place. He didn’t.
It’s hard to argue with his omission. He hasn’t done anything in an England shirt since September 2008, and has done about as much in an Arsenal shirt this season. The likes of Aaron Lennon, Adam Johnson, and Joe Cole have all overtaken him in the pecking order, and it ought to be a wake-up call to Walcott: his form hasn’t been good enough. He is living off a reputation. If he was playing like this at a mid-table club, no-one would notice him.
Not a single Arsenal player in this summer’s World Cup squad. Unless…
