Barcelona have poked Cesc on Facebook

And so the saga of Cesc Fabregas’ potential move to Barcelona rumbles on, like a low-level tremor which requires a seismograph to distinguish it from a particularly powerful fart.  This morning, we awoke to a quote from Chairman Peter Hill-Wood, who is continuing his bizarre policy of using the Daily Star as a mouthpiece, saying that the club were both “surprised but delighted” that we’d yet to receive a bid from Barcelona. This prompted all kinds of questions: Do Barca have the cash? Is their fax machine broken? And if so, why do clubs still use fax machines to carry out transfers in this post-digital age? It’s mental.
Cesc’s dad then piped up to say he thinks Arsenal will let his boy go in the end:
“Arsenal have to respect the decision and the will of the player. Negotiations between Arsenal and Barcelona will be very long. Both sides are going to have to sit several times because the issue is complicated.
Cesc is now focused on the Spanish team but he wants to close the signing soon … At the moment he has a contract with Arsenal. I get the feeling that the English club do not want to sell but in the end will finally give in and let Cesc go.”
It’s the clearest indication we’ve had yet from the Fabregas camp that the player has resolved himself to leaving. Barca have now weighed clumsily in to announce that they have made contact with Arsenal, though not yet mustered a bid, which seems a bit like poking someone on Facebook without actually gathering the courage to send them a lascivious message.
William Gallas, who is still by the skin of his contract’s teeth an Arsenal player, has crashed a buggy. The incident, which was part of a Raymond Domenech training camp that also included a seance and the ritualistic sacrifice of Lassana Diarra, is too funny for words. So here’s a picture:
Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote has confirmed he is an Arsenal supporter, but denied any interest in investing in the club. The attempts of Lady Nina and her people to engineer interest in her equity by leaking false stories to the press about potential buyers are, frankly, pitiful.
Finally today, those either at Wembley last night or exposed to the nightmarish concoction that is ITV’s football coverage will have seen two Arsenal tyros, Theo Walcott and Carlos Vela, face off as England took on Mexico. Both players had a couple of opportunities to make a significant impact, but disappointed with their final product. It all felt strangely familiar.
Till tomorrow, folks, when Barca will be sending Cesc a private message complimenting him on his profile picture.
