It’s over. Roll on Saturday and Cescy goodness.

The Internationals have now been and gone, leaving a trail of incomparable boredom in their wake. A couple of nights ago I missed club football so much I couldn’t sleep. Then, when I eventually drifted off, I dreamt of Liverpool losing 2-0 to some team from the lower divisions – as far as waking up to be disappointed that a dream wasn’t real goes, this had to be up there with dreaming I had this Spiderman action figure back when I was about eight.

In fact, so desperate for any kind of footballing action was I, that last night I managed to compell myself into some kind of interest in the England – Ukraine game, principally via the medium of gambling. I think a certain satellite television company probably got it right when they said of sports betting that ‘it matters more when there’s money on it’. It was this soccer betting that led to me celebrating Andriy Shevchenko’s equaliser with significantly more enthusiasm than John Terry’s winner; 1) because it was John Terry, and 2) because I had money on it.

There was some worrying news to come out of last night’s games – Nicklas Bendtner was not deemed fit enough to start in Denmark’s match, whilst Samir Nasri withdrew from the French squad with some sort of illness. Both must now be considered doubtful for Saturday.

On the plus side, Andrei Arshavin maintained his excellence with this assist, whilst Eduardo’s return to fitness and form continued as he netted for Croatia in their win over Andorra.

However, surely the only team news that really matters is that Cesc Fabregas is fit and ready to go. Speaking to French channel TF1, Arsene said:

“He is ready to play again, but he needs three games to be back [at his best].”

With eight games in the next twenty-five days, there’ll be plenty of opportunities for Cesc to get back to his best. I can’t wait.
