Style Icon Becks Knows Arsenal Are In Fashion

Add comment January 5th, 2008

Becks and his new training partnersDavid Beckham began training with Arsenal yesterday (complete with Number 23 training kit) in what can only be described as a veritable ‘love-in’.  Arsene said:

“He doesn’t live far away and always loved Arsenal. That’s why we help him.”

I think it can only be a good thing for all parties.  Beckham has the obvious incentive of keeping fit under Arsene’s revolutionary regime, but our younger players will also get something they’re not often afforded – the chance to train with a truly experienced player.  Beckham is now the eldest outfield player on the training ground, and what’s more he’s an extraordinarily gifted one.  If he can’t teach the likes of Fabregas and Denilson a thing or two about striking a dead-ball, nobody can.

I’ve always liked Becks and admired the way he’s handled himself under immense media scrutiny.  In fact, I would have liked us to buy him a season or two ago, but it’s certainly too late now.  Nevertheless, it’s nice to see a former United hero so firmly ingratiated with our beloved Arsenal.  We’ve nicked one of theirs, and it’s strangely fun.

Arsene has revealed that Alex Hleb, Emmanuel Adebayor, Gael Clichy, William Gallas and Cesc Fabregas will all be rested for the FA Cup trip to Burnley.  That means the likes of Diaby, Denilson, Bendtner, and Eduardo can all expect to feature.  Those ‘Carling Cup players’ will be bolstered by the inclusion of Bacary Sagna, Kolo Toure, and Emmanuel Eboue, as well as Jens Lehmann, who is still thinking over an offer from Borussia Dortmund.  Another man likely to start is Lassana Diarra – Arsene insists Spurs have not bid for him, but does not sound entirely convincing in his resolve to keep the Frenchman:

“You don’t make a player come on August 31st and then want to sell him on January 1st. I want to keep Diarra but we’ll see.  The bad luck is that he arrived when our train had started. I rate him highly and, if it’s down to me, I want him to stay. I can understand his frustration because he is worried by the national team.”

I would love Diarra to stay, but I know as well as Arsene how difficult it can be to keep a disgruntled player.

Still, there is one thing that could convince Diarra to stick around: he might be a huge Beckham fan…
