F1 Chief Revs His Engine For Arsenal Takeover

727 comments August 11th, 2007

“It was David who mentioned it. The directors at Arsenal don’t want to sell and have signed a lockout agreement for a year, so we will have to wait and see what happens then. A lot can change in that time. I am still very interested. If I could buy Arsenal I would, but I would want control.”

Thanks “David”.  It seems the Orangeman will take pretty much any deal as long as it involves his return to the club.  And now that it’s emerged Ecclestone is not buying QPR, he’s right back in the running for Arsenal ownership.

What with the relationship between the children of Dein and Ecclestone, the former probably envisages being able to create some kind of Arsenal dynasty to rival the Hill-Woods.  It’s all a little far-fetched, if you’re asking me.

Danny Fiszman insists he won’t be selling “for the forseeable future”.  Just how much of the future he is able to forsee remains unclear.

Johan Djourou has been loaned to Birmingham until January.  In my opinion, it’s a strange strange decision by Arsene.  Granted, Djourou will get some Premiership experience, but it leaves us with only three centre-halfs.  William Gallas and Philippe Senderos are hardly immune to injury.  Imagine they’re both out, and what are we left with?  Gilberto, who didn’t look comfortable there last season, and Alex Song.  I have a horrible feeling that in a few weeks time we might be asking ourselves “Now where did we put that other Swiss defender?”

I haven’t seen too much of the English press, but the papers in Cyprus are full of stories linking us with an £8m move for Eduardo’s pal, Luka Modric.  He appears to be a cross between Rosicky and Cesc – ie. barely an improvement on what we’ve already got.  Still, something is generally better than nothing, and these quotes from Arsene have made me worry that nothing was a genuine possibility.

The Premier League kicks off today, but we don’t play until tomorrow.  I feel a little left out.  Still, I fully intend on cheering on Sunderland in their game against Spurs.  Cheering on Roy Keane?  This is going to feel weird…
