Rumours have it they’re selling like the hottest cakes in the world after the official squad number list was confirmed yesterday. Song reportedly wears the seventeen because it’s the sum of the first four prime numbers. This gives him magic powers. However, these powers are sadly nothing to do with football.
Niklas Bendtner has taken the 26 worn with such distinction by Igor Stepanovs, whilst Lukas Fabianksi inherits Mart Poom’s legendary 21 shirt.
Mathieu Flamini is supposedly wearing 16 next season, but Valencia would have it otherwise. It’s been pretty much accepted fact that Flamini would be leaving this summer, but yesterday reports emerged suggesting he might stay as he has agreed to play right-back. This, in turn, would put paid to our plans to sign Bakary Sagna. All very well and good, but would I rather have a fourth-choice central midfielder playing right back, or the best right-back in France? Sorry Mathieu.
Jose Reyes could move to Real Madrid after all, and the implication is that we’re asking for less than £13.6m. I imagine it’s all tied into Madrid’s pursuit of Robben and Malouda. A bid of around £10m (as opposed to the £6m-or-so Madrid are currently offering) would probably do the job.
I love Gilberto. He’s a proper captain.
