Arsene Wenger Is Our Best Signing This Summer

Granted, this was a transfer window in which we didn’t bring in the established signings many felt we needed. But even if we had, the above cliché would still ring true.
Nothing is more important to this club than Arsene Wenger. Not Thierry Henry, not David Dein, not Danny Fiszman, and certainly not Ricardo Quaresma. Can anyone realistically name a manager they would rather have?
If you do have an alternative, it’s likely that it’s a cheque-book manager who would splash the cash and bring in big names. But that does not guarantee success. Look at the arrival and subsequent disappointment caused by the arrival of Ballack and Shevchenko at Chelsea. With Arsene Wenger, we have to accept that we are on a different, but ultimately more rewarding journey. Arsene has chosen to develop his own stars, for a multitude of reasons, one of which I outlined yesterday.
Arsene has stayed because he can not turn his back on what he is building. The next three years of Cesc Fabregas; the next three years of Denilson; the next three years of Gael Clichy. He cannot allow the chance to work with that kind of potential to slip between his fingers. Of course, as fans, watching the evolution of these players brings its own rewards. But football will always be judged by substance rather than style. To truly write your name into the history books, you must do so with silverware.
That is what the next four years must be about. Arsene won his first title in 1998 with George Graham’s defence. He re-built the side to create the Invincibles, who triumphed in 2002 and 2004. Remarkably, at that time, he was criticised for not blooding enough youngsters. Since then, he was revolutionised the entire structure of the club, and a clutch of hand-picked teenagers are now forming the basis of the club’s future success. Between 98 and 02, there was a four year period of rebuilding. We’re now almost four years on from The Unbeaten Season. It’s time for Arsene’s young charges to follow their predeccessors and bring home the silverware the fans crave.
Arsene wouldn’t have stayed if he didn’t know they could do it.

Agreed on everything you say GS. AW is the top signing not of the summer but of the decade. It will be a sad day for english football when he goes but it will also mean that the foundations of the club are firmly set in the rocks and steel.

Of course Wenger signing is good for the club, players and fans. A bit of stability is well needed, even though most had no doubt he was gonna sign anyway and it was the media whipping things up with ‘will he won’t he’ stories.
But theis very public event will boost everyone involved with Arsenal, and just before the spud game too! Nice timing!
Now, the players need to push on and make their mark this season. last season was not acceptable by any means, sure we got to the CC final with the kids…yadda yadda.. But this year we need to do something, whether its mounting a credible title challenge, winning a cup, but something, progress as well as having a few players get headlines for their performances, we need the TEAM to do something, that’s not asking too much is it?
BTW; just read ANR (I know, I know) what a PRICK. So, no change there then.

GS; I know it aint exactly a bolt out of the blue. But Ramos would be a good replacement, when Wenger, does eventually leave the club. Or possibly Paul Le Guen.

Title: Why I urged the board to re-sign Wenger

Many of you will know from reading my book “the Professor” (£19.99 from all good book shops) that I was instrumental in the original sigining of Arsene Wenger.
I recall a sunny September lunchtime, about four pints in, making an historic call to David Dein (who is a close family friend).
“David,” I said “who is this Arsene bloke. Never heard of him.”
“Fuck off Palmer!”, Dein replies in his wittiest voice “I’ve told you if you ever call me again I will inform the police.”
The banter carried on in this way for another quarter of a second or so, and then the phone went strangely dead.
Obviously, based on my stated concerns, Dein was pausing to reconsider whether he had made the right decision, and I believe to this day that it was this pause, this reconsideration, that gave my good friend David the courage and resilience to stay with Wenger through all the hard times.
I ask no thanks for this service to Arsenal Football Club, indeed, as as a lifelong Chelsea fan, some would say that my stirling work in bringing Abramovich to Stamford Bridge had more impact on the English game. My point is that you should not assume that David Dein was the most important person in keeping Wenger at Arsenal for so long.

Merida’s pretty ordinary, actually. Not all that special at all - personally, I don’t think he’ll ever make it at Arsenal.
The only youth team I think will step up, from the current crop, are Nacer Barazite, Havard Nordtveit, and maybe Gavin Hoyte and Rhys Murphy.

the thing is now, most big european teams want to follow arsenal style and academy.
milan want to blood more youngsters, barca, bayern, they have all come out and said we want to do what arsenal are doing, breeding youngsters making them into superstars.

It is. But it’s not like U17 international football is anywhere near even the level of the reserves. I watch Merida play 10 or 11 times last year, and he didn’t look exceptionally gifted on any of those occasions. Methinks a lot of people have been conned by Youtube.
As for Lansbury, he looks like a good footballer - but I didn’t forget him. I’ve heard a lot of stories that he’s got a very bad attitude, even for a kid that young.

Always amazed me how the doom mongers belittle the great mans achivements by stating “we havent won anything for 3 yrs” - Ultimate COCKSUCKERS!!
In reality even in these so called 3 barren yrs we have won FA cup, yr after reached the champs league final, yr after gets to CC with kids (chelsea celebrated that trophy like it was FA cup- so dont belittle it).
They also conviniently forget all our off field achievements - like they not important e.g. training facilities, new stadium, property development etc.

2003: FA Cup winners
The Gunners lost their title as United produced a storming finish but they hit back to win the FA Cup with victory over Southampton. Wenger was awarded an honorary OBE in the summer.
2004: Premier League champions
Arsenal, led by the imperious Thierry Henry, were magnificent all season and swept all before them to reclaim the Premier League without losing a match. Their success earned them the nickname ‘The Invincibles’.
2005: FA Cup winners
Chelsea took over as champions but the FA Cup came down to a battle between old foes Arsenal and United. United dominated the final but the Gunners took the cup on a penalty shoot-out.
2006: Champions League runners-up
Arsenal were unusually inconsistent in the Premier League but they hit form in Europe to reach the Champions League final. They led Barcelona for most of the match in Paris but, with just 10 men, eventually succumbed to the Catalan giants.

Guess we all know now that Geekov is also Jack Bauer.
