Arsenal triallist to sign for Birmingham
0 guns August 24th, 2007
A couple of days ago Gunnerblog brought you the story that Wilson Palacios, the Honduran winger, was having a trial with the club. Well, now it seems that he’s on the verge of signing a permanent deal with Birmingham City. Manager Steve Bruce speaks:
“I’m speaking to his agent today. We’re trying to construct a loan deal to bring him in to have a better look until Christmas, but I don’t know if that’s possible yet.
He’s from Honduras where they call him the magician and he has 40 or 42 international caps.
Mr Wenger rang me up from Arsenal and asked if we wanted to have a look at him, because they already have seven or eight midfield players.
We’ve had a look, but it’s always difficult to judge people on two or three days so the ideal solution is if we can bring him here up until Christmas, but we have to get permission off his club.
There would be a transfer fee involved and there would have to be international clearance and we would have to go through the rigmarole of a sorting out a work permit.”
So that’s one signing that’s not going to happen.
If Bruce’s reported conversation is correct, I’m slightly concerned at Arsene feeling that “seven or eight midfielders” is somehow enough. That’s barely two players for each position. When you consider that some of those midfielders are about as likely to get injured as child playing on the tube tracks, it gets even worse.
Another day, another hope killed. Whilst Palacios is evidently not a world beater, we’re fast running out of time and options before the window closes.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has jumped to the defence of underfire Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson after his England clanger this week.
Wenger said: “For the goal, he was calculating on the cross and it is like what happened to David Seaman on Ronaldinho’s free-kick.
“If he hadn’t come for the cross you say ‘what is he doing on his goal-line’ and he was unlucky that the ball headed towards the top corner.
“For me, it is not a massive mistake because I like the guy who likes to step out on the cross.
“I don’t like the guy who stays on the line and says ‘I make no mistakes’. I prefer to be caught once like that and be caught once out of 100, rather than playing completely safe on the line.”
– - -
Do you also like it when your aging German keeper flaps at yet another cross and misses it completely instead of letting his defender clear it.

15. Goofle | August 24th, 2007 at 1:47 pm
Yes. Lets sign a right winger, left winger and a striker so we can play Hleb, Cesc, Gilberto, Rosicky and Diaby in the middle at the same time and have those wingers providing width!!!!
Stupid uneducated idiots!

Arsenal fans will be revelling in the soap opera as it takes more twists ahead of their Premier League meeting at White Hart Lane on 15 September.
But for Gunners boss Wenger, the situation is a sorry reflection of the “win at all costs” culture that now dominates the game in this country.
“You cannot decide that after two games,” said Wenger. “You are surprised. I’m not in the best position to make any comment on Tottenham but we are in a modern impatient world.
“I don’t know what’s happening inside the club. Frankly, it’s not my responsibility. Tottenham are responsible for their decisions and we are responsible for our own. It’s not proven that they were talking to another manager but I feel generally that two games is not a lot.”
Wenger has clashed with Jol in the past, most memorably when they had a heated touchline argument two seasons ago, but admits to feeling sympathy for his rival because no club have a divine right to a Champions League spot.
He added: “I see eight teams who should be in the top four. Would you exclude Everton, Newcastle, Aston Villa? At the moment you cannot even decide the technical profile of the teams because they are still buying - Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City. Let’s see where we are in September.
“Tottenham have a potential improvement. They have bought good players and invested money but I’m convinced there are seven or eight clubs who can vie for the four positions.”
20. Goofle | August 24th, 2007 at 1:50 pm
You cant have 3 players for evry position and have 8 central midfielders!
Just be happy that we have about 2 players in evry position and we dont rely on wing play.
If we scored the easiest of chancwes that our wingers create i am sure you wouldnt be calling for wingplay.
21. GilbertoSilver | August 24th, 2007 at 1:50 pm
Ron - what do you mean your last day?
22. Eric | August 24th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
Eboues bollocks and theo shouldn’t play yet.
Our right wing is pathetic, and it’s because wenger’s a penny-pincher.
If we don’t get at least 3rd place this year, he should be fired.
23. TopCat | August 24th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
Goofle mate - we don’t have any wingers other than Theo Walcott and even he is more a forward/winger than a touchline hugging winger.
Just because you stick someone in the Right/left wing position doesn’t make them a winger.
24. Goofle | August 24th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
At least third!!!!
I expect 4th but within 10-15 points of the Champions. Then win the League within the next 2 years and all cup competitions within these next 3 years!

Here’s a deal for you Eric. Arsenal football club will agree to your demand on the agreement that if we do finish 3rd or higher you fuck off and support someone else.
Would you agree to that?
No?
Well don’t make such outrageous statements then,
27. Eric | August 24th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
What?
Isn’t it Wenger’s job to improve the side, not just pootle along with his thumb up his arse?
28. Goofle | August 24th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
So if we signed a winger we would have to sell Hleb and Rosicky as they would have no use in the team. They wont play in the middle and they wont play behind the striker when we have 2 fit strikers.
29. Eric | August 24th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
Isn’t it Wenger’s job to improve the club?
Or is the Arsenal manager’s position a life peerage now then?
30. Tombo | August 24th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
Ron…… i think your contributions are as helpful as a Arsene saying he’ll sign ’soon’
31. Eric | August 24th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
28 Rosicky isn’t much use to the team when he’s injured for half the season.
32. Goofle | August 24th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
He hasnt improved us at all has he? I think we have gone backwards since he has been here! Gone are the days where we were able to witness brilliant football and winning cups and the league evry so often!
What has Wenger done for us? (this is all sarcastic, we dont want Eric thinking he has someone on his side do we?)
Eric…please support Spurs.
33. TopCat | August 24th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
Eric - please don’t state the bloody obvious.
Of course it is Wengers job to improve the team, but this takes time.
Wenger has publicly stated that it will be completely unacceptable if we are not competitive in the league this season - ie are back to challenging for the title - that is the benchmark he has set himself and his players.
Let him get on with his job instead of issuing threats.
34. Eric | August 24th, 2007 at 1:58 pm
32 You sound like a liverpool fan, constantly living in the past.
What he did 8 years ago isn’t important, it’s what he’s doing NOW and in the future that is.
Grow a brain.
35. Eric | August 24th, 2007 at 1:59 pm
33 - It’s not a threat, is it.
I won’t get him sacked by moaning on a blog.
What will get him sacked is continuing failure to produce an uncompetitive side, and the slow emptying of the emirates stadium.
The future is now.
36. Goofle | August 24th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
I have a brain. You need to support your team and the manager for fuck sake. Of xcourse Im not happy with not winning the league evry year but I would have never thought that I would ever get to say that before Wenger came!
He is improving the team by the way.
The only problem with the team is its inability to finish. And maby the CB partnership.
37. TopCat | August 24th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
Eric - are you prepared to wait until the end of this season to cast judgement - or have you already decided that we are not good enough to win the league this year?
38. Eric | August 24th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
37 TC - Of course I am.
I think the squad is weak, particularly on the wings, but it’s results that will prove whether or not that’s the case, not speculation 3 games in.
That’s why I said ‘if’.

Against Fulham, Sparta and Blackburn. Gosh, this tops the unbeaten season by far!
Unlike Man Utd, Spurs, Everton, West Ham, Villa - who have all gone out and spend bucketloads on new players
And your point is? If anything, it should be obvious - if you’re missing key positions, there are occasions you’ll suffer. Just look at Utd’s lack of strikers, or Spurs lack of midfield.

my point is simple - at least wait until we have lost a game before you start bitching.
Man Utd lost because they have no strikers? what? a team with ronaldo, nani, giggs, scholes, carrick and tevez cannot score 1 goal between them?
So ronaldo’s 20 goals from midfield last season were because he played as a striker were they?
and whay are you tallking about the unbeaten season - thats in the past - the future is now remember?
I know you are frustrated at no new signings - just be a man, accept it and move on.
46. enki | August 24th, 2007 at 2:15 pm

Eric - I am passionate about Arsenal and Im sure you are too…
if we cannot agree - then agree to disagree.
48. Eric | August 24th, 2007 at 2:31 pm
my point is simple - at least wait until we have lost a game before you start bitching.
As is mine. If Wenger can’t bring the club forward any longer - and 3 seasons of rebuilding is more than even Arsene deserves - he should be moved on, not offered a new contract. We’ll see how he gets on this year, but we can’t wait forever.
Man Utd lost because they have no strikers? what? a team with ronaldo, nani, giggs, scholes, carrick and tevez cannot score 1 goal between them?
So ronaldo’s 20 goals from midfield last season were because he played as a striker were they?
Winning the league is about scoring goals consistently throughout a season - and we look like we might struggle at this this season.
Did Utd lose to City because they don’t have a striker? Arguably - because with so many super-talented players who specialise in scoring wondergoals, you’re liable to have the odd game where it just doesn’t go in - and City were basically lucky.
and whay are you tallking about the unbeaten season - thats in the past - the future is now remember?
I think it’s fairly obvious I was being facetious.
The bottom line is - I want Arsenal to do well, not be held in the thrall of an idealistic manager. If Wenger’s philosophy doesn’t bare fruit this year, my patience will have run out with him, and I’ll want him to either change his philosophy (unlikely), or be shipped out.

So all the same here as usual - TC fighting the good cause as usual - fair few bleating on still about no more signings - get over it people, if it happens it happens, if it doesn’t then hey we’ll be in for another rollercoaster ride of a season wondering were we’ll end up.
Personally I think even if no more signings come in we’ll finish 3rd and if we get one or two more people in then maybe we’ll sneak into pole position (well I can hope).
Ron - sorry to hear you are leaving us - good luck on your travels and I’m sure I can say this from all of us……FUCK OFF and never darken our door again……
So what’s the predicted score for tomorrow ppl?
Last prediction I made was rubbish against Blackburn so I’ll try and go with a safer one of 2-1 or 2-0 with RvP to score a wonder strike for goal of the month
51. TopCat | August 24th, 2007 at 2:41 pm
Eric, I think we agree on this - we both demand a vast improvement on last year.
A sentiment which has been echoed by the manager and club.
The difference is, I truely believe that we will improve greatly on last years results, you don’t (or thats how it seems from your posts).
I have posted this before - but Chelsea’s cash injection fucked us up more than most will care to admit - we were 2nd in 2005, 6 points behind chelsea - so it is safe to say we would have won the leage that year…. next year 250m is pumped into Chelsea - they win the league again.
How were we supposed to compete with that?
Last year - we moved into Ashburton and struggled with major injuries and were without Henry and RVP for most of the season, but still managed 4th, on the same number of points as pool who finished 3rd - and had a better points tally than the season before.
We have also gotten to a CC final and a ECL final and were not “outplayed” in either.
It hurts like hell to be that close and it be taken away - but we are improving and we are going to make the doubters eat their words this season….
Just have some belief man.

I don’t, you’re right.
And the reason I’m not happy is that I don’t think it had to be this way. Wenger’s made over £10m profit in transfer fees this summer, yet our right wing looks absurdly bad. Hleb’s ok on the left, when Rosicky’s out, but Eboue and Walcott are seriously shoddy options.
Would it have hurd Wenger’s ego that much if he’d had to go out and maybe ‘overpay’ (shock horror) for a vaguely competent right winger?
Smart money well spent could have had us challenging this year. Instead, I think we’ll be scrapping for fourth, and if we are, Wenger should leave.
56. TopCat | August 24th, 2007 at 2:45 pm

TOPCAT: “So if after 10 games, Malouda has 6 goals and is playing out of his skin, great - but at this stage Sagna’s impact has been far greater than Malouda’s.”
My argument has nothing to do with impact. Like you’ve said many times, both have only played a few Premiership games, which is where the real test is. And besides, Sagna’s difference in “impact” isn’t so great in proportion to Malouda’s that you can draw any comparison out of it. We’ve played Fulham - and struggled - and Blackburn - and struggled. We’re yet to play a big team. Chelsea have played Liverpool, away, and didn’t lose.
Have to say tho, I am surprised Chelsea chose to sell Robben just because they have Malouda. Malouda is excellent, but isn’t as effective as Robben in my opinion. I would have kept the flying Dutchman.”
You scoundrel, you!

GILBERTO SILVER —
whilst I’m not too pissed about missing out on another unproven crock of shit who’s YouTube comilation even looks shit (now how often does that happen??? EVERYONE looks good on YouTube, it’s like a Big Brother housemate’s ‘best bits’ - not that I watch such nonsense, I must add), I must say that you echo my sentiments exactly when you say:
“I’m slightly concerned at Arsene feeling that “seven or eight midfielders” is somehow enough. That’s barely two players for each position. When you consider that some of those midfielders are about as likely to get injured as child playing on the tube tracks, it gets even worse.”
Many people on here have had many things to say about Wenger - good and bad, defensive and offensive. It seems though that unless you post something good about Wenger then you’re almost certain to receive an influx of his would-be bodyguards who only read as far as “Wenger” and the word “wrong” rather than actually absorbing the points being made before discharging as doomsdayer fallacy.
No one’s saying for one seond that anyone on this blog can do better than Arsene Wenger, and no one - not matter what they post - if they’re true Arsenal fans, can’t deny what he’s done for our club. BUT—and here’s why I find your post so significant—the kind of things Wenger is overlooking are so simple it’s almost outrageous. NOBODY needs to be a football manager or have even managed a 5-a-side team to be able to apply simple maths and probability to their club’s squad. It’s basic mental arithmetic:
8 midfielders ÷ 38 league games, (if we qualify) at least 6 CL games, plus historically numerous domestic cup matches + individual player’s international programmes = NOT ENOUGH.
For all Arsene’s magic, for as much as I want him to sign a new deal that will keep him at the club ‘for life’, these are basic, basic, basic things - surely Arsene isn’t so naive? It just seems as though he’s purposely mocking the odds and inviting kismet misfortune with this convoluted belief of his that a squad both weaker and smaller than last season will fair any better this time around against opposition stronger and more extensive than last season?
It is absurd.

Hey Rural, all’s good ta. Just counting down the minutes till I can go home. Same old same old!
92. Columbo Mavis | August 24th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
Yeah, it’s my foil to all those ID stealers out there.. Plus I like wearing long grubby rain macks.
Things have gone a bit crazy on here since you departed. TC’s been trying his best, but the bed wetters have been having a field day. We all hate Wenger now and think the club’s nailed on for relegation..
93. Ruralgoon | August 24th, 2007 at 3:41 pm
Yep, too true FG! Currently in some sort of bank holiday hell, featuring every single builders merchant we supply deciding that they MUST have a load today….its bank holiday FFS, who, in reality, is gonna spend the weekend building anything except the BBQ if the weather’s half decent?!

Falklands Gooner - i miss u
95. Columbo Mavis | August 24th, 2007 at 3:44 pm
Dick - I agree with you man.. The squad is too thin, whilst others around us have strengthened theirs. I can only conclude that Wenger has more belief in the current squad and the improvment/development of the younger players than we have. He has openly stated that he expects us to challenge for the title this year, so if we don’t manage that come next may, he will have trouble justifying his inactivity in the market this summer.
96. munitionsman | August 24th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
90 And that must prove he is turned into an egomanical self absorbed twat in 2 years…. or there is no money truly “available”.
I think it’s an enormous risk ( and you did mention internationals but not specifcally ANC which is a huge drain).
Bigger than enormous. Foolhardy. Even with physical players it would be too much to ask, but with flyweight juniours?? I dont think they have yet invented a word big enough to describe the risk.
97. Falklands Gooner | August 24th, 2007 at 3:46 pm
Hleb, Fabregas, Gilberto, Rosicky, Walcott, Eboue, Diaby, Flamini, Denilson, Song, Da Silva.
11 players, all of whom can play in midfield, that’s not too shabby. I know some of them aren’t naturally midfielders (And I include the much maligned Song) but I think they could all do the job there. I’m not saying I’m happy so many of them prefer to play in the middle and that there’s a lack of width there, just playing devils advocate.
98. munitionsman | August 24th, 2007 at 3:48 pm
I have no problem with the team Wenger has built. I love it. I have big problems with the squad he has not built.
99. vlcgooner | August 24th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
I don’t understand why people are upset that Arsene doesn’t come out and slag people publicly. It is obvious to me that he thinks and sees many things that he prefers not to air in public.
He has a lethal wit, but in general prefers to let people save face who are out there making an effort. He is also incredibly fair. Hence he never slates his players publicly after a game. Hence he covers for Lehmann. Hence he actually defends an opponent’s goalkeeper when everyone else is attacking him. I think this is a really noble quality but it seems that many of you would prefer some raving maniac like Morinho who calls himself special, mocks the opposition and criticizes his own players in public. That is all fun for a soap-opera, but who would you rather work for? The funny thing is that when Arsene does criticize something he is condemned as a whinger.

COLUMBO MAVIS —
only thing that worries me tho is that he said the same last year about challenging for the title, and that was when we still had Thierry. I’d have rather spent NO money this summer and kept hold of Henry - whether he wanted to leave or not. We’d have had a much better title shot with a fully-fit Henry than without him and the players we’ve got - and even that wasn’t great chance in itself.

103. Played off the park by Blackburn | August 24th, 2007 at 3:53 pm
Die Hard gooner and season ticket holder - 1st blog…
I believed that we have the best ‘young players’ in the league, and that we were the most skillful, just lacking in a little tactical astute-ness and prowess in front of goal, but Hughe’ comments re: pro-zone proving the played us off the park, out tackled, passed, shot and posessioned us - is - I think - more worrying…
Are we not as good as we think we are?
The sooner we get Gilberto back in midfield, the better. And I’[m not averse to seeing Diaby make his return soon - we need a few six footers….
And is it just me, or is Adebayor only good as a build up player… wouldn’t you have to surround him with goal scorers in order to get any return from him?

103- I’d actually say Ade was better at being on the end of moves rather than taking part in them. He’s not exactly the best passer of the ball in the side and he’s not gonna beat three men on a run is he? He also has a penchant for scoring scrappy goals which I like.

RVP will be the league top scorer this season. Last season he just missed out due to the injury. Unlike last season, i see too many goals from the midfield. Especially from Hleb.
Once n 4 all, lets be optimistic.

109. vlcgooner | August 24th, 2007 at 4:02 pm
BTW, I think that 8 midfielders are enough if they can all play different positions. We are a bit thin on the wings, but there are about 50 possible midfield combinations with the squad as it is.

Agree with you, SHAUN, think Dudu and RVP should definitely start together as with Adebayor could have a much greater impact coming off the bench should we need him than Dudu. Don’t think the latter has played enough games or settled into the team to such an extent that he could change the game from the bench.

i dont know why fans are moaning for a striker, we dont need one , we have RVP, who is a brilliant individual player like henry, we have ade who is a hard working stiker and sometimes a playmaker,
then we have dudu a natural goal poacher(who lacked for a long time) and then we have nick who is tall and wins balls in the air.
people who think arsene anelka should sign anelka are brainless twats hes going to start “sulking” and will not help the team spirit besides he is 29 years old and we know arsene doesnt sign many 29-year olds.
what we need is A GOAL SCORING WINGER who can give us 15 goals a season like C.Ronaldo

After window closes and also 8-10 games then some of the criticsm may be valid (personally think the sum of the parts will mean this isnt the case)
But irrespective of what happens difficult to believe some of the posts slagging AW - talk of living in the past etc - the fella is a legend and lives and breathes AFC as much as any of us.

SHAUN —-
I don’t know mate, Anelka is incredibly prolific and consistent. If we can forgive Wenger for some of his clangers, there’s no reason we can’t give Anelka another chance. It was 10 years ago after all. Things change, as do circumstances, and circumstances change people too. Also, one small thing, Anelka is 28. He turned 28 in March, so you could say he’s at his peak.
Also everyone, just heard that Man Utd are lining up a “mammoth” bid for Berbatov.
125. Trident | August 24th, 2007 at 4:51 pm
To think I was mildly excited by the prospect of signing some unknown from Honduras, only to have that one whipped away also. This is what its come to now, clutching at straws in the hope we will actually sign some cunt after all.
This transfer window has been wasted by Arsene, completely fucking wasted, what a fucking disgrace!!
SIGN SOMEONE OF CLASS YOU ARROGANT CUNT!!!
126. Falklands Gooner | August 24th, 2007 at 4:51 pm

Trident, are you just angry that the dentists have all turned their back on you and now recommend Colgate.
In all seriousness we’ve strengthened defensively with Sagna (Who looks like a class act from what I’ve seen), we’ve signed a good understudy keeper with bags of potential, we’ve signed Eduardo who we should give a chance before we slate. The only thing we haven’t signed which I think we could do with is a wide midfielder, would you want us to just sign second rate players for the sake of signing someone? We had this guy on trial and he didn’t look good enough for us, I’d rather in those circumstances we didn’t sign him.
131. Bobby7 | August 24th, 2007 at 5:37 pm
Who else can we give to Birmingham? Cesc? Van Persie?
132. munitionsman | August 24th, 2007 at 5:44 pm
If we are going to keep supporting birmingham the very least we could do is pay for a nose job for SB. How can a man breathe with his nose squashed all over his face like that?
133. munitionsman | August 24th, 2007 at 5:46 pm
130 Yes, second rate players in their correct position could well be better than 1st rate players played miles out of position due to injury. Even Chelsea have second rate players, like Lampard for instance
134. munitionsman | August 24th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
Liverpool, on the other hand, have the luxury of two teams to pick from, like Manchester United and Chelsea. I expect a comfortable win for the Reds.
But we only have one team and yet expect to be competetive at the top. We are either very special or very deluded.
135. davey b | August 24th, 2007 at 5:55 pm
the team that will win the premiership will be the one with the best shape ,balance in the side is so important just ask the england fans
136. davey b | August 24th, 2007 at 6:12 pm
you know were always told that were being racist because we want to see english players developed at our club ,yet the manchester city chairman is on about bringing in all these asian players so he can develop his national side clearly ,you have sanchez signing the nothern ireland side ,we have developed more french players than any other team in the premiership ,and suprise suprise our manager happens to be french ,
its been well documented that wenger has said he holds no stock for international footabll ,im sure his tune would change if france were’nt qualifying for WC and european championships ,but that wont happen because we do develop french players even though he sees more of this league than he does that one at first it was yeah its because he knows the players in that league that dont wash with me no more ,flamini
you dont develop players if there not good enough granted but players have to play at the top level to develop and realise there potential
137. davey b | August 24th, 2007 at 6:20 pm
you can say english players are overpriced overated fact is in the premierships top clubs they surrounded by foreign technical players ,and the english players in those teams are the most influential players in thier respected teams, why because they have played this football all there life and there is the reason they are so expensive coupled with the fact they are at a premium due to foriegn players
i aint saying we should pay those prices but we should definetly develop more of them not sell them
138. Gunnerz | August 24th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
where is ron going?
139. davey b | August 24th, 2007 at 6:28 pm
lets see if we get lassana diarra ,probably after all we only have cesc ,denilson ,flamini, gilberto, diaby ,
a bit like sagna we only had eboue ,hoyte ,toure , who could play there
nice to see we are’nt neglecting to develop the next generation of french players ,after all makalele pv4 ,henry ,thuram, are all 30+
140. Trident | August 24th, 2007 at 6:40 pm
Sorry Falklands, got a little carried away there earlier.
Granted, Sagna looks good so far and Eduardo has not played enough yet but I’d like to think he will be good, especially if played in his prefered position up front. What I’m still very concerned about is that lack of width which again appears to have passed us by. I realise he wont spend silly money, nor should he, but is there really no one out there we could’ve signed? Instead we are left with a hole that any fucker thats fit will have to cover and that’s just not acceptable Im afraid.
What I cant get my head round is that even Wenger admitted we missed Reyes last season, so he and his famous scouting network have had plenty of time to sort it out. My mates in Spain think we’ll end up with Robinho,(sorry guys, no substance just rumour) but he would get kicked shitless even if true.
Dick aka willy’s account of the Ribery fiasco sounds just the kind of mess we are becoming prone to lately, but thats the kind of farce you’d normally expect from the spuds not Arsenal.
Even Wigan have topped the table at some stage, the trick is to stay there and I cant honestly say we look strong enough to maintain any desent challenge. We will no doubt play some great football and surprise some big teams, but we shouldn’t still be just surprising people, they should all be worried about us by now. What are the chances ?
141. jan lavzz | August 24th, 2007 at 6:50 pm
Arsenal will only sign a mid because they got a gollie(fabianski),def(sagna),mid(….?….),str(eduardo).

Hi everyone !
145. AusGunner | August 24th, 2007 at 9:32 pm
I don’t get it, how many midfielders did United have last year?
Scholes, Carrick, Ronaldo, Giggs, Park Ji-Sung… then *cough* Fletcher and O’Shea. Sweet. So if ‘7 or 8′ isn’t enough, then what is, exactly? 10? 12? 14? Where does it end?
You say you’re concerned about whether having 7 or 8 midfielders is ‘enough’, enough for what? Winning the league? United did it with 7, and 2 of the backups were absolutely naff.
There’s more to it than the exact number of midfielders we have (which is closer to 11 really, given that some of our players like Eboue, Walcott and possibly Eduardo are quite versatile and can play there too), it’s how they play. That can be rectified with coaching rather than the needless pissing away of club money. The early goal-scoring form of Hleb is a reflection of that *touch wood it goes on throughout the season*.
The squad’s in better shape than everyone in ‘the Arsenal blogosphere’ thinks and nobody seems to want to recognise it. Well, I think our squad is excellent, just keep in mind that the Premier League is extremely competitive on and off the pitch, possibly moreso than it’s ever been. Patience may be required in the long run but there is absolutely nothing that makes it genuinely impossible for the team as is to win the league this season.
146. shaun | August 24th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

147. Alex McDonald | August 24th, 2007 at 11:40 pm
Well now Bruce has in good faith signed the Honduran.Notice that AW has most of the time someone relalatively unknown
or sign him and then play him out of position.Wiltord,Lauren converted midfielder,RVP winger to striker.
I think part of the reason Wiltord left was because he was down the pecking order and being played as a winger instead of central striker.
This can be a good or bad thing. In contrast most other managers sign players for their original position.
By mid Nov we shd know who is right.
148. vlcgooner | August 25th, 2007 at 1:00 am
I am happy to see the positive tone of the posts. It seems obvious that Wenger tested out Palacio and thought he wouldn’t have a spot in the squad, so he passed the info on to Bruce, who is only too willing to trust his judgment on talent.
One question for Falkland Gooner: are you and I watching the same Ade play? I think he is a very good passer, good at holding up the ball, powerful for short dribbles, great at defending from the front…but lacks a good shot. I am hoping he can straighten that out (actually, more like bend it around…) and become a real force. After all, strikers need to score goals, so all the rest of the ‘work’ he does will only truly be appreciated when he does. Anyhow, it seems that we have totally opposite evaluations of the player, but both find him somewhat valuable.

Man city are defensively pretty good at the oment but have lost bojinov. We wont score many. But I cant see us conceding many now Jens is dropped. 1-0 to the ARSENAL has a nice ring to it. RvP to score as he leads the way to the golden booty thing
