Arsenal trial Honduran winger
0 guns August 22nd, 2007
Arsenal may be signing Palacios. That’s “Palacios“, not Palacio - that previous fêted but ill-fated transfer rumour.
Wilson Palacios, a 23-year-old winger, has been on trial for almost a week and will find out today or tomorrow whether or not he has done enough for Arsene Wenger to keep him permanently.
Palacios, who plays for Honduran team Deportive Olimpia, has previously had trials at Red Star Belgrade and Monaco, which reportedly fell through over “enconomic differences” and Palacios’ non-EU status respectively. However, the player’s father is confident about his chances of earning a move:
“He called us Monday afternoon, which alleviated our concerns, but it’s good news. He passed the medical examinations well. He’s already been in London five days, and if he’s made the right impression, he will remain there. We haven’t yet discussed the economic aspects - they are not important to us - what matters is that my son remains playing in England.”
Palacios began his career as a right-back, but his attacking instincts have seen him shunted forward into a wing role. He’s got a hell of a shot on him, as this video demonstrates - go to 1:05 in (or 38 seconds from the end) to see the goal hailed in Honduras as the best of all time:
Reports suggest that we would be prepared to pay £2m for Palacios’ services.
Of course, this could all be smoke without fire. Smoke from a cigarette, perchance. But there are some fairly reliable local sources (ie. ones that don’t quote The Sun) backing it up. It would hardly be a superstar signing, but with just over a week remaining in the transfer window, it might be all we can look forward to.
Don’t forget to enter our HLEB! competition.
UPDATE: The Sporting Director of Palacio’s club, Osman Madrid, has spoken about the player’s potential move:
“The agreement with Arsenal is practically a fact - there is a big possibility, though it is not yet certain if the player will go on loan to English soccer.”
Whether that means it is not certain whether the player will move on loan or permanently, or on loan or not at all, I have no idea. Still, interesting stuff. Stick with us for the latest.

Reports in the Honduran press stated that Palacios had gone missing during August 2007, and one article quoted his father as stating that he was actually in London, in a trial period with Premier League club Arsenal. It has been revealed that he is in fact close to signing for Arsenal, on a loan or on a transfer. Palacios is tipped to be the replacement for former Arsenal winger Freddie Ljungberg, however one possible stumbling block may be the price. So far Arsene have only offered two sacks of coal and a herd of welsh sheep, but Olimpia are believed to be holding out for a cash fee. “Since Chelsea entered the market, things have gone a little crazy”, Arsene Wenger recently commented. “Now it has become next to impossible to squeeze small, developing football teams and steal their top talent for nothing. How am I supposed to compete if Peter Hill-Wood spends all our money on candyfloss?”.[1]

Must be edited, but still…

What the fuck is the deal with the first gun crap. The comments area is exactly that. Somewhere to post comments. Not a retarded competition to see who spends the most time refreshing Newsnow FFS. Dick heads.
On the flip side he looks pretty good, but during a kick around at a park you could oput a decent clips reel of yoursself. That goal looks pretty special though, reminiscent of a certain duel between Niemi and Seaman I would like to forget.

Maybe Im a little late but Im curious as to what all those who were moaning about us not siging anybody feel now that Spurs and Man U havnt had such a great start?
Im fairly certain that Man and Spurs will be alright but if it were us who had had theyr starts the death squads would be out by now wouldnt they.
Palacios? Can he play on the left as well anybody know how old he is?
21. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 12:36 pm
Who cares if he can play on the left? Our problem’s on the right!
And he’s 23.

another winger needing time to adapt though…. and there’s no guarantees he will (this is all presuming he actually signs!)

I would never have guessed this, never heard of this name before,
but get me another Wenger and I will get you seven Morinhos. Hail Mr Wenger.
25. Pascal Cygan | August 22nd, 2007 at 12:41 pm
Err… the only link I can find is a crappy arsenal blog I’ve never seen before on Newsnow and your “reliable” Honduran sources. Excuse the skepticism but haven’t we seen this before … Palacio, Di Maria etc…
26. Geekov | August 22nd, 2007 at 12:42 pm
lionar; I don’t care about United or the spuds. We need new blood, simple as that. Just coz they’ve stumbled don’t mean that makes it OK for us to NOT buy anyone.
IF this fella is for real and Wenger signs him in ANY capacity, then I will go with Wenger’s judgement even though none of us have a clue about him. A right midfielder is/was needed and this fella plays in that position. So, to recap; Good work (if legit)
27. guner | August 22nd, 2007 at 12:42 pm
He does not look good at all, this is another baptista, we dont need him, but i may consider him he looks physical as well, Please wenger bring in quality players not rubbish.

29. Gunnerz | August 22nd, 2007 at 12:42 pm
this guy looks decent and in light of all the injuries could be a good signing. He looks to have a good shot and looks to have a bit of pace on him too. Could be ideal is also young and it would be good if he signs
30. chzberga | August 22nd, 2007 at 12:44 pm
what about a work permit? if eduardo had to appeal being one of croatia’s main players and a good percentage what chance does this guy stand. Does anybody know whether he is a regular at international level?
31. Geekov | August 22nd, 2007 at 12:45 pm
27; You’re havin a larf right?
32. Gunnerz | August 22nd, 2007 at 12:46 pm
guner you can say he does not look good, but he would be cheap as he is from an obscure club and would be out on the wing doin his thing. Surely that has to be good. also how does he look like the beast. Does he have muscles growing out of everywhere? No he does not and how can you not be happy over another possible signing as it is very late august
33. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 12:53 pm
I for one am very happy. Even though I have secured almost all top ten guns and been abused for doing so, we have a winger and that’s what we wanted. And there may be more. I dont care if he is cheap. As long as he is good. Of course he will take time to settle. Even an existing PL player would take time to play our way. This can only be good news at this stage.
Now for a striker and CB and were Golden

Now for a striker and CB and were Golden”
STRIKER = Anelka, £10M, release-clause (won’t anyone as good for any less)
CENTRE-BACK = Curtis Davies, £8M-£10M (young, hungry, TALL - give us some much-needed height - and very, very quick)
Personally I’d also like to see a PROVEN winger at the club:
WINGER = Quaresma, £15M
What are the chances, eh..?
41. Gunner8 | August 22nd, 2007 at 1:00 pm
erm where does it say he is on trial ????
is it on Arse.con ?
They always mention if a player is on trial don’t they? Yaya and Song spring to mind… …how the fuck to you take song and let yaya go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
42. Bergy | August 22nd, 2007 at 1:00 pm

Please see below comment from interview with Cliche. If Gallas had half his tact, or Ashley had a 100th of his integrity they would be well ahead. He’s a bloody gd’un
Do we need new players? Will we miss Henry? It is up to Arsene to answer that question. Players don’t get mixed up in those questions. Everyone has his role to play. It is up to the coach to put the best side on the pitch and it is up to us to play the best football.
Well said Gael
44. Gunner8 | August 22nd, 2007 at 1:01 pm

46. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 1:05 pm
40 Dick 20 mill spent to give a genuine chance at either league or CL. Hell yes.
Thats what is so maddening. This squad is close. Thin but close. Just a couple of signings and we could compete.
What it this strange tint decending over my glasses??
47. Gunner8 | August 22nd, 2007 at 1:06 pm

48. Spanish Fry | August 22nd, 2007 at 1:07 pm
It’s hard to tell honestly whether this will prove to be true or not. If it is, I’d be delighted. I think we have enough quality out wide to compete but we’re severely lacking in quantity. He might not be a first-choice player but he will certainly give us depth.
Are their any Honduras readers out there who know a bit more about him?

“35. chzberga | August 22nd, 2007 at 12:55 pm
i’d say £2mil for this guy is better than blowing something like £10mil on Pederson etc…”
Typical fucking nonsense!!
All these “£2M here” and “£2M there” add up, you know. Soon you realise you’ve got 5 average players when you could have 1, possibly 2 very decent - and proven - ones.
Dudu - £8M, Sagna - £7.5M, Nordveidt - £2M, Fabianski - £2M, Palacios? - £2M.
That’s £21.5M — and on what?!?! £21.5M, but nooooooo, we can’t afford today’s modern transfer prices. Oops, sorry, I mean, we don’t have the balls to spend it on one player. And let’s look at what we REALLY get for our money:
DUDU - unproven, big shoes to fill, slight; better players out there at similar prices. Want an example?? Anelka!!!!!!!
NORDVEIDT - won’t see him for at least 2 years while he “grows” under Arsene’s wing. Might make the odd Carling Cup appearance. £2M for a player that will make no immediate difference whatso-fucking-ever.
SAGNA - decent, but not worth £7.5M. Auxerre must be laughing their arse off. No one pays that sort of money in France. And he’s not France’s second-choice right-back at all - hasn’t even played one game yet. Sagnol, Clerc and Chimbonda are all ahead of him.
FABIANSKI - fucking pointless signing. Hasn’t even sat on the bench of any competitive games yet. Lehmann fucks up twice in a week, yet is still certain to start next game. Another £2M that isn’t going to make the least bit of difference to last season’s troubles.
PALACIOS - wow! Let’s get excited!!! Do we want a winger that’s going to actually make a difference, or do we just want “a winger”? Is he really going to force his way into the starting line-up ahead of Hleb or Rosicky or Diaby or Walcott - who have all proven they can play there - within the next two seasons?? Another fucking £2M pissed away.
With that £21.5M Wenger could have added just a few extra million (which I’m sure the board could have squeezed with all the suicidal-sales profit we’ve made this summer) and with a kitty of £25M could have signed ANELKA (at £10M) and QUARESMA (at £15M).
Anelka & Quarema
OR
Dudu, Nordveidt, Fabianski, Sagna & Palacios
Which you rather have, chzberga? It’s a no-brainer and you know it.
p.s. and yes, I’d rather spend 10 mil on a Premiership-proven talent like Pederson than piss 20% of Pedersen’s cost on a fucking player who got turned down by Red Star Belgrade!

Just quietly, this is a quote from the source…
“Varios medios internacionales a través de internet hablaron del posible traspaso de Wilson Palacios al Arsenal. Wilson se encuentra a prueba con Los Gunners, Llegó el domingo y según señalan medios de prensa, su juego le interesa al entrenador Arsene Wenger. Después de acer pruebas en el Estrella Roja de Belgrado y Mónaco de Francia, Harry Potter recaló en Inglaterra.”
Seems to me like someone’s having a laugh…

Wilson is a good player, we’ll be proud if he signs with a great club like ARSENAL… to bad henry is not playing with the club no more… to me he’s one of the best players in the world…
Wilson is an olimpia player…. this same club put david suazo in ITALY and now hes one of the best players in serie A.

.lol at 55. Kinda agree. The world is changing al the time so is players value. I do feel arsene is stubborn in the transfer market . We sold henry for peanuts and we did not replace him. Dudu and sagna do look good i must say. We had the chance to sign yaya toure a while back on the cheap but noo we sign song.hmmm i never believe in defenders turning in wingers eboue havent impressed. How can this guy from a donkey kong league be any better?

Which translated badly means
Writing. Several international means through Internet spoke of the possible crossing of Wilson Palaces to the Arsenal. Wilson is on approval with the Gunners, Arrived Sunday and according to they indicate press means, his game interests trainer to him Arsene Wenger. After testing in the Red Star of Belgrade and Monaco of France, Harry Potter saturated in England.
National radial means indicated yesterday that Arsenal already made a proposal of 2 million pounds sterling by the steering wheel, a little less than 4 million dollars.
68. Dick (aka Willy) | August 22nd, 2007 at 1:37 pm
Let’s not disguise our real disgruntlement here.
Our disdain is the result of a chain reaction, the ripple effects of potentially the most crucial decision our club had to make in their Premiership history…
Maybe I speak alone here, but I won’t hide it any longer.
IF HENRY HAD HAVE STAYED, I WOULDN’T GIVE A SHIT US NOT SIGNING A WINGER.
But he didn’t. He went. As a result, we now don’t have a striker who can create his own chances and therefore require chance-creating wingers to aide our strikers. Clearly then, if Henry was still here - yes, I’d still want a winger - but I’d be a little bit more thankful that Wenger had retained the services of the best player in the world.
Anyone else feel the same? Anyone else who wouldn’t feel this bad had Henry stayed…??

Dick. I agree with you - the pennies add up and we could have bought one super duper player for the price of 4 as yet unproven players.
You are desperate for us to sign Anelka and Quaresma - thats plain to see… but it surprises me that you think we would go after either of these guys - Wenger has been at Arsenal 10 years…. and in that time, how many proven international players has he signed?
Im not defending Wenger - I am just trying to help you get over your Anelka/Queresma fixation…
Now, we have signed Sagna - ask the majority of fans and they will say he has been a good signing - we may have paid an extra 2m or so in the fee, but that shows how good a player Wenger believes him to be and so far he has looked solid and dependable - time will tell if he is worth 7.5m, but he has certainly started well.
Eduardo hasn’t really played yet, so we cannot judge him - he seems to be making intelligent runs and had a very hard baptism into the prem - so give him 5-10 appearances and then judge.
Fabinski - how can you call him a waste of money / same with Nordveit - they are for years down the line - so I would not even call them proper signings….
I want super super class players as much as you do - but I am not going to critisize the club for having the same attitude to transfers as it has had for the last 10 years!
It shouldn’t surprise you as much as your posts imply that it does.

Don’t think so mate. I’m a REALIST.
Think Spurs, in line with their Champions League goals, require someone, say… more of your own calibre:
i.e. some rose-tinter who lives in the fucking clouds, doesn’t question anything, doesn’t have an opinion of his own and doesn’t care if his club gets fucking ruined by pathetic, snap-shot decisions that are made in the blink of an eye, but last the duration of a season.

Dick - the point is that Spurs did exactly what you suggest we do - they went out and bought and spent big. look where it got them. I’m an Anelka fan, but not everyone at the Club is and i’m not sure if he upsets the team dynamics the way Henry did in his latter years. Wenger is conscious of that. Reputation is a fickle thing. you cant always bet on the horse that won last time!

MM - the board at Arsenal don’t actually exist - Wenger, with the help of Pat “the hat” Rice murdered them long ago…..
They formed an elaborate plan to dispose of the bodies - surely no-one would suspect the building of a new stadium - and no one would dare dig up the new turf….
David Dein was set up by Wenger to take the fall, hence the recent public dinner meeting in which Dein confronted Wenger.
All true…

You are desperate for us to sign Anelka and Quaresma - thats plain to see… but it surprises me that you think we would go after either of these guys - Wenger has been at Arsenal 10 years…. and in that time, how many proven international players has he signed?”
TOPCAT —
you’re right, we’ve got away with under-investment in the past - but times have changed and we’re getting left behind; the past two seasons alone have proved that. Wenger is living in yesteryear - he needs to fucking wake-up. I’m not asking him to spunk £20M sums in all directions for anyone and everyone that comes available. All I’m asking is that he stops talking up players, like Quaresma - who he lauded in the Brazil v Portugal programme and when we played Porto last season - and Anelka - who he said he “rated very highly”, and then not doing fuck-all about it. Fuck what ‘Arsene knows’, WE KNOW that these players would make the required difference - why doesn’t he??
The team is strong - but the squad is thin and weak! I’m sicking of hearing all this “I believe…” bullshit. Wenger is beginning to sound like fucking Morpheus out of The Matrix.
He believed the team could win the Champions League. They failed.
He believed the team could fight for the title last year. He was wrong.
He believed (his exact words were “guaranteed”) Henry would stay. He let him leave.
Why the fuck, for once, can’t Wenger - rather than believing in everyone else - believe in his own fucking ability to sign a top player, for top money and make that signing a success??
Also, I slightly disagree about never signing “proven” players for big money:
Henry was VERY well-known when Wenger bought him; he was newly-crowned World Champions France’s top scorer at the World Cup. We paid £10M.
Vieira was also “fairly” well-known - he was at AC Milan for fuck’s-sake!! How many of their ‘youngsters’ aren’t decent?? It’s only because we offered £3.5M for a 20-yr old who at the time had better central-midfielders ahead of him in the pecking order that they sold him.
And what about Wiltord?? If we can pay £13M in 2000 for him - WHY is it so perposterous to believe we can’t sign a player like Quaresma for just an extra £2M, a full 7 transfer-fee-inflated years later??

I am not of the rose tinted brigade and I think we could do with a couple of signings, but I will hold fire until the transfer window actual shuts before I judge Wenger. In the meantime, I love how Wenger is getting slated for signing a player he hasn’t even signed !! Genius.
Also love the statements that Quaresma will cost £15M, I mean after all Porto have turned down a bigger offer than that this summer from Athletico Madrid and with a player like Alves about to be sold for somewhere approaching £24M, I can see exactly why Porto would now accept £15M for their prize assett, especially having already sold a couple of key players !!
We have made an unbeaten start to the season and have one foot in the group stages of the Champions League. That coupled with what he has achieved in his Arsenal career, surely Wenger atleast deserves your patience until the transfer window closes ??? I dread to think what would be on here if we had made Spurs’ start to the season !! Have you ever called a Spud fickle ? Yes the deserve it but look in the mirror boys !!!
Final point - to sink as low as slagging Sagna off as a signing after the start he has demonstrated is very very sad indeed !! Oh, and if players don’t go for £7.5M in France, please tell me what happened with Ribery, Malouda, Fred, Essien, Wiltord !! etc to name but a few

England Under 21 boss Stuart Pearce hopes Theo Walcott nails down a regular place in the Arsenal team after the forward gave Romania the runaround in a 1-1 draw last night.
He was impressed by the performance of Walcott, who underwent shoulder surgery in the summer, but knows the 18-year-old needs to be playing regularly.
Pearce said: “Theo gets you off your seat and goes past people for fun. He needs to get 90 minutes under his belt as often as he can. It would have been nice to have had him in the squad in the summer.”
A starting place in the lineup? Starting saturday, probably.

Yes i’m an optimist - thats what fans are supposed to do!”
REARGUN —
I respect your points, but Spurs are completely different to us. For starters, we wouldn’t have to spend anywhere near as much money as they spent to become title-contenders, because we’re more than half-way there already. Let Jol spend their millions and pay over the odds. I’m not asking for that. I’m just asking that Wenger realises what this team needs - which I’m sure he does - but more specifically, actually does something about it!!
I know reputation isn’t everything - you’re right, you “can’t always bet on the horse that won last time”. But if it keeps on fucking winning - or in Anelka’s case, keeps on scoring and proving himself in the Premiership - then it becomes as much as a sure-thing as you’re ever gonna get. The same can applied in comparing Henry to Dudu. If I asked you who’s the better player, Henry or Dudu, what would you say?? Have you seen Dudu play a full-season yet? I haven’t. Yet I wouldn’t wait a season to decide who I’d rather have in my team. Therefore Henry’s “reputation”, largely due to the fact that he’s proven himself, speaks volumes. When it rains outside, people get wet. Reputations, in the most part, are there for a reason. Yes, some people lose it, but most - especially players of Anelka’s class - don’t.
Finally, I don’t have a problem with your optimism. But does that mean everyone else has to prescribe to your brand of happy pills?
I have a problem with the club’s transfer policy at the moment and I won’t lie to myself about it. I’m not saying you are, all I’m saying is that people deal with things in different ways. If I didn’t care about the club then I wouldn’t give a shit, would I? But the fact is I do. And just because I refuse to wear magic glasses doesn’t make me a “Spurs managerial candidate”.

108. TopCat. | August 22nd, 2007 at 2:23 pm
Dick,
When you say that we are getting left behind, its important to remember that a new season has started - we can hark on about last season and the season before and argue until we are blue in the face, but lest you remember that 3 years ago, we finished 2nd in the league, 6 points behind the champions Chelsea - without Chelsea’s mammoth cash investment that year, we would no doubt have been crowned champions that year. As for the last 2 campaigns, I agree, unacceptable, disgraceful, etc, etc - but new season, new optimism and all.
Just cos AW says he rates a player, doesn’t mean he a) actually does and b) will make a move for him.
He believed the team could win the champions league - and he was right, but I doubt very much he predicted that we would have our goalkeeper sent off after 20 minutes!
We played 70 minutes against the best attacking side in the world - and we lost - boo fucking hoo - accept it and move on.
Q: “Why the fuck, for once, can’t Wenger - rather than believing in everyone else - believe in his own fucking ability to sign a top player, for top money and make that signing a success?? ”
A: because Wenger knows (sorrty couldn’t resist).
Ok - when I say never, I mean rarely - you are right Henry was relatively well known, hardly considered world class, but known nonetheless - but Vieira? - Im sure you were one of the select few that were like “quality we have signed Vieira” - as opposed to who is this patrick bloke then, like the rest of us.
“And what about Wiltord?? If we can pay £13M in 2000 for him - WHY is it so perposterous to believe we can’t sign a player like Quaresma for just an extra £2M, a full 7 transfer-fee-inflated years later??”
Wiltord goes against the majority of Wengers signings - but he scored the winner at Old Trafford so thats 13m well spent!
Quaresma will not cost a measly 15m - try 25m. Anelka will not cost 10m, try 15-17m
So thats 40m - not 25m - try and be a little more realistic in your pricing of these players mate
Bottom line - these players will not come to us - so why distress yourself by repetitively asking for them?
109. DeiseGooner | August 22nd, 2007 at 2:23 pm
Dick - Spurs are a fucking joke to be honest. Spurs sacked Jol and agreed £4 million compensation, thought they had Ramos from Seville, could not get Ramos, then told Jol he has to get 4th place or get the chop at the end of the season.
now theres a way to run a club. And as for their transfer policy. They overpaid for Bent as a replacement for Berbatov who will be on his bike soon , along with Jol.
Spurs back to where they started 3 years ago and have to do it all again.
“Reputations, in the most part, are there for a reason. Yes, some people lose it, but most - especially players of Anelka’s class - don’t.” - The man has no class for the way he treats clubs he plays for, moaning bitch. I wonder how long till he joins in with Diof and moans his way out of Bolton.
And as for reputations, what about Wengers rep. ?

two things:
re: your first point, Quaresma - perhaps you’re getting confused with euros and pounds, but the last bid Porto received for Quaresma was from Atletico which was a bid of 21 million euros. That amounts to roughly £13M. Porto want 25 million euros. That’s more-or-less £15M.
re: your second point, costs of players in France - I should have explained myself more clearly, admittedly, I did miss out a crucial word and that word was “international” players. I don’t class Sagna as an international player. Of course, Malouda and Ribery are massive talents - some of the best players in France, possibly the world. Of course they’re going to cost huge amounts. But generally in France, players that haven’t played for the national team or don’t have the superstar status of players like Malouda or Ribery go for very moderate amounts indeed. Example: Spurs pay £16.5M for Darren Bent, a player who’s hardly played for England. Take a young French striker, who’s hardly played for his national team, someone like Jimmy Briand or Karim Benzema, and he wouldn’t go for anywhere near as much as that. £7.5M is far too much money for Sagna.
112. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 2:27 pm

“Quaresma will not cost a measly 15m - try 25m. Anelka will not cost 10m, try 15-17m”
Mate, Anelka has a buy-out clause in his contract at £10M. TEN MILLION ENGLISH POUNDS!!!!!!! If you don’t believe me, ring Bolton Football Club up and ask them. Sammy Lee has even referred to this figure in actual quotes, direct from his mouth/arse, stating that if a club came in with an offer of £10M and Anelka wanted to go, they wouldn’t be able to stop him. It’s the same with Martins at Newcastle, Allardyce has even admitted he has a buyout at £13M.
As for Quaresma, like I told KJS; don’t confuse euros with pounds. Atletico had a bid of 21 million euros rejected. Porto want 25 million. That equates to roughly £15M-£16M.
Both are affordable.

“those in the know” in France??? I am French. I read French newspapers everyday. I watch French TV almost everyday too. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY of any real significance thinks Sagna is ready to play for France - not now, and probably not even in the future. Clerc is regarded as a better player. Chimbonda is regarded as a better player. Even Thuram can play at right-back, and has done when Sagnol has been out injured. Besides, Sagnol is only 30 yrs old, has at least three years left in his position, at which point Sagna will be 27. France u-19’s already have one of Europe’s most promising right-backs coming through in the form of Garry Bocaly.

Dick,
I actually sypathise with what you saying, I just find it a little bit over dramatic given that the transfer window isnt closed yet. You might well be right, its just that I am prepared to offer Wenger some patience as I think he deserves it, so I won’t judge him at this stage.
I will have to bow to your knowledge of what what the Porto board want to do about Quaresma, but last I heard they said he wasn’t for sale as opposed to punting him around for 25M Euro’s ???
I won’t pull you up on your excahnge rate calculations, where you think a differential of 4M Euro’s equates to £2M !! Ooops I just did - sorry !!
Its a reasonable point you make about the French transfer market, but the French club to French club and English club to English club or even the French club to English club are clearly very different markets. Basic business sense would suggest you utilise those different market forces to your benefit. Currently the English market is awash with TV money, so everyone recognises that and wants a piece of it. The reverse effect is that we get a very good player cheaper than if we wanted to acquire a similar standard of player from an English club. Anoher benchmark of the Sagna deal would be Kaboul who Spurs paid £8m for, he also hasn’t received full international recognition and arguably isnt as close to full international honours as Sagna.

Dick - my other question re Anelka is…
if he does have a buyout of 10m - then why oh why has no one jumped in and bought him - if he is as quality as you say he is then I would expect top clubs all around europe to be clammering for his signiture.,….
same with quaresma…”
OH COME ON - WHAT SORT OF A FUCKING QUESTION IS THAT??
The fact is mate, he’s available - at that price. Man Utd are “rumoured” to be interested. Man City are “rumoured” to be interested.
The only reason I can think is that perhaps of the big four clubs who can offer him Champions League footbal (don’t forget, Anelka doesn’t want to move back to France, or Spain, and said he’d prefer to say in England) we’re the only ones with an under-nourished strikeforce. Only RVP is a truly special talent up front for us. Utd have Rooney, Tevez, Saha - and more. Chelsea have Drobga, Pizarro, Shevchenko, Kalou - and more. Liverpool have Torres, Crouch, Kuyt, Voronin - and more.
Those clubs - three of the top four - don’t need to buy more strikers - we do. Pretty simple equation really - and also answers why no one else has gone for him: no on else, in England, can offer Champions League football.

Bacary Sagna - Lasagne

Except for tha fact Dick, that United, Saha aside, don’t have a centre forward. Rooney and Tevez play behind a CF, and if you’ve watched them recently, they have had to play John O’Shea in attack.
If Kalou is a “special talent” then so is Adebayour.

Er… perhaps you’re extremely stupid, but if you remember, I said Porto want 25 million euros for Quaresma, which equates to roughly £15M. How the FUCK is that “a differential of 4M Euro’s to £2M”.

Hello all…
All this talk about Anelka… does anybody else remember the last time he was at Arsenal and was a moaning prick? I think it is pretty safe to say that the team spirit is pretty high right now. We don’t need him back and acting arrogant and disruptive, just as Henry was becoming… he was complete crap as a captain. Could he change a game in the course of a few seconds? yes. Is he irreplacible? As an individual, sure, but in the long term no, and it’s not a terrible idea… he wasn’t going to stick around and be a mentor because he cares about himself too much. Henry didn’t want to stay and there’s nothing Wenger or anybody else can do about that.
I see Wenger putting more faith into Ade and RvP (plus Eduardo) this year… I really doubt he’ll splurge on another striker to go into the starting 11. If we finish outside of the top four (very unlikely), I would imagine Wenger would leave, along with half the squad. These guys want to play their style of football together, it’s about finding the right players to fit in.
Also, somebody on here the other day was going on about how Wenger had blown millions in the transfer market in the past few years… unfortunately the list was missing Wenger’s best move for profit since he got to the Gunners… Anelka! I’m pretty sure AWmade over £10m for the club when he sold him!!! Also, as far as letting these players go for “free”, Arsene is honest with contracts. He won’t extend somebody for 5 years if he thinks it unlikely that they’ll want to stay. Seems fair to me.
Ok this post is way too long, apologies!
160. Pierre E-Nganga | August 22nd, 2007 at 3:02 pm

erm… a bit like McClaren picking Shorey for England, then, huh? He even got to fucking play! But do you really think he’s ever going to take over from Ashley Cole????????? Grow up.
You may also like to know that in the exact same squad Sagna earned his first call-up, Sagnol was injured, and both Clerc and Chimbonda were also part of the squad - AND, Clerc started the game, Chimbonda came on as sub, Sagna didn’t even get on the pitch. Obviously not ready to play for France then, huh?

which maybe suggests there could be some prompt truth in Man Utd’s purported interest in Anelka. Realistically, that’s the only other place I can see him going. And no, I don’t think Kalou is as good as Adebayor, but he is better than Bendtner.
Finally, (re: Clichy) I fully agree with you. Domenech is a twat for not selecting him for the national team. Even tho he has Evra and Abidal ahead of him, I feel Clichy IS ready to fight for a starting place.

a-hem!! Yes, indeed, I owe you an apology. My ego must be feeling very generous today.
However, I did use the words “more-or-less”, as in approximated figures. Quaresma probably will cost closer to £16M than £15M, which makes 21 million euros perhaps closer to £14M than £13M. The point is, he’s affordable. He ain’t gonna cost over £20M. I seriously doubt it.

Think we will have to agree to disagree about how much Quaresma will go for until he actually does go somewhere - though if its here it will be undisclosed so we might never know !! I know it may be construed as a cop out, but the issue of keeping a good team spirit is something that has to be considered when transfer targets are being assessed. Whatever we think about the lack of transfers, the team spirit, although early days, has really been a feature for me.
Bringing in a big name or big head/big ego (as if) could jeopardise all that hard work in bonding the team together, like steel. Now thats hard.
i know, it is a bit of a cop out innit.

Mmmmm, Dindane - yeah - actually probably a rather biased shout from Kolo. Decent enough player, plays up front for the Ivory Coast, but, barring a good performance against S&M at the World Cup (think he scored, can’t remember), largely unproven on any stage other than the French and Belgian Leagues. He’s also in his late-twenties so I doubt Wenger will pay much attention to Toure’s request.
I do think Wenger should have listened to Toure tho on the matter of his brother, Yaya, who I think is fantastic. He will do very well at Barcelona.

yeah, I thought he did really well at Monaco. May be just what Barca need - very disciplined, and versatile. One game he can be your Makalele, the next he can be an Essien, surging forward. Reminds me very slightly of Diaby.
My only fear with Yaya being at Barca is that - along with Henry - it’s another reason not to turn Barca down if they ever come knocking for Kolo. Hope Titi and Yaya behave themselves and don’t start filling Kolo’s head with shit. Think Kolo’s too loyal for that anyway. Then again, thought the same with Henry…

lol, interesting comments. i tend to agree with willy, but i think hes gone overboard slightly. However, i sympathise with his frustrations over all this wenger knows shit. Arsenal needs 1 genuine (left) winger at least, or we should buy a proven striker (i.e anelka) and play vna persie on the wing. we are too narrow. And i’ve been suspecting wenger is slowly getting demented, and his activities this summer has been proving my suspicions. the latest was that loan of djourou to bham. i never liked that loan, and gallas’ injury exposes the folly in the loan. now imagine if sth happens to sanderos or toure say 2day playing 4 their country, (especially toure), then we are stuck with a central defense of sanderos and gilberto, or sanderos and song. the only people who such a pairing will inspire would be our opponents. infact, it might make lehman a bit more jittery.

Wenger has his fingers deep in his ears so it doesn’t matter how loud you, me or anyone else shouts.

This flimsy house of cards consisting of one top class striker, two fit central defenders (the third sent out on loan!!!!!) and no true winger on either flank is the craziest construction I’ve ever seen.

241. shaun | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:27 pm
hey TL stop whining and get outta the blog
242. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:29 pm

How anyone can still say ‘Arsene knows’ and show their face in public is beyond me.
Because Arsene is judged by results, not by transfer market activity.
If we’re no better this year than we were last, Wenger should be fired. But at least give him the games for us to figure that out!
243. DeiseGooner | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:30 pm
Wenger has his fingers deep in his ears so it doesn’t matter how loud you, me or anyone else shouts.
HE CAN’T HEAR YOU!
As if he is signed in here to get his transfer targets from us. ha ha ha
244. shaun | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:31 pm
all the c**ts saying wenger should be fired are arrogant fools if wenger leaves arsenal will be relagates, because all the first team players will leave
245. TL | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:34 pm
242. Agree with you on one thing. Wenger should be fired if we’re fighting for 4th again this season, because that Ramos bloke is available in 2008….
246. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:35 pm
all the c**ts saying wenger should be fired are arrogant fools if wenger leaves arsenal will be relagates, because all the first team players will leave
People who make this argument seem to think that Arsene will be replaced by a performing seal.
There are a fair few good managers out there, and I’m pretty sure some of them could MAYBE be convinced to come and manage at Arsenal.
247. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:37 pm
You cant spend what you dont have. There aint no money to spend. All that blurb about having money is BS. It’s all going into paying for the house. No chocolate this week kiddies. AW used to spend when he had to and I bet this lack of quality and not winning the title is pissing him off a whole lot more than it is us.
But he is the manager, and the manager takes the heat. While the board sip chardonnay and smoke cigars.
AW knows….. but cant say
248. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:37 pm
245 Ramos isn’t the only option - though he might be a good fit with Arsenal’s style.
I still rate Le Guen, even after what happened at Rangers, or someone like Rijkaard may be available by then, Capello’s still out of work…
249. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:38 pm
247 - the argument that we’ve got no money makes no sense to me. Why would the board crucify Wenger like that? Do they really think the fans are so stupid that if they said we’d be a bit tight for a few years because of the stadium, we’d riot in the terraces?
I don’t buy that, to be honest.
250. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:40 pm
Who the hell is going to come to a club with a 2.50 transfer budget. Only AW is prepared to go for a couple of years with no money because his heart is with Arsenal football club, and the project. It sux to be us, but there you go.
251. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:41 pm
As I said above, I don’t think there is no money.
I think that’s an apologists cop-out to explain Wenger’s lack of activity (no offence intended).
252. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:42 pm
If there is no money, why lie?
253. DeiseGooner | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:45 pm
there is money, as the board and manager says there is. wenger just doesnt want to spend on players to replace those already here who he feels are of the required quality. he has said many times he will spend if he sees the player benefiting the team and if they can be got at an acceptable price. how is that hard so understand
254. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:45 pm
249 Absolutely the fans would be livid. Charged a fortune to pay off someone else’s asset. Be honest with yourself, how would YOU feel. AW is prepared to be the foil for the abuse as it is logically the best place for it to fall. If the fans ever turn against AW in the stadium, which I doubt will ever happen, then you will see the money flow. That’s why AW takes the fall.
Also it’s a matter of integrity. How would it sound if AW became one of those pussies whining about the board giving no money.
They are lying because they think it is the best of a bad route. And they are smart ppl.
255. DeiseGooner | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:46 pm
And what would be the benefit of all those lies then munitionsman ?
256. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:47 pm
253 there is money, as the board and manager says there is.
Dont judge them by what they say, judge them by what they DO. Every pundit says we are broke. Why? cos they know bullshit when they smell it. Not broke, that’s the wrong word. We are RICH but we have a large debt to clear. It’s just responsible management.
257. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:48 pm
I’d understand!
Sitting in my nice padded chair, in the rather smart (though still not that atmospheric) brand spanking new football stadium, I’d understand if the board were honest enough to tell us that we’d not be making any huge signings for the next few years - after all, it beats the hell out of crucifying the manager, and having several summers of absolutely zero spending in the transfer market (nett, after tax
).
No, I don’t think the fans are that stupid. They’re too posh to cheer, most of the time fer chrissakes.
258. DeiseGooner | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:48 pm
How about Wenger doing a David O’Leary on it and spending all the money the board say he has to spend. Spend it on players who are overpriced and overpaid because they have realised they can demand really high wages. then the club gets in over its head with debt it cant pay back,. Yeah thats the smart move. Its not fuckin champo manager you know
259. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:51 pm
Furthermore, the published accounts would paint a very different story. There IS money to invest, and we also have the loan facility to underwrite any transfers involving future payments.
Judge them by their actions, you say, so why take out a loan facility to act as a guarantor if you know you’re never going to need it?
No, these are not lies (it’s generous calling Hill-Wood intelligent for a start!). There is money - if none is spent and Arsenal fail (which looks possible), it’ll be Wenger’s head on the block, not the board’s, and in fact the fault lies the other way around.
260. DeiseGooner | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:51 pm
“It’s just responsible management”
Responsible management is then board setting up that transfer fund loan agreement Edelman was on about at the GM , just in case its needed. But Wenger says he feels he has the players at the club to make that an option and not a necessity. Thats responsible management
261. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:52 pm
Responsible management is not putting your personal ideals ahead of the pragmatic interests of the club.
I’m not sure if Arsene’s done that or not…
262. TL | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:52 pm
258. No one is asking Wenger to Spunk money, I think you’ll find most of us just want a balanced squad which is just 2 or three reasonable signings away.
263. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:53 pm
255 It keeps the fans on board. Keeps them spending on gates and shirts.
Likewise what is the point of running the squad paper thin and targeting 4th place? AW has never done that before. Isnt it a coincidence that his new transfer philosophy madness started in the first year at the Grove. AND it is centred on very young players.
join the dots
264. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:55 pm
261 AW “personal ideals” are relatively new. He has always had an eye for young talent, but this extreme is new to the last 2 years.
265. DeiseGooner | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:56 pm
Its called long term planning munitionsman - thats the route the club chose to take to make it possible for us to compete with the chelski , man u and liverpool sugardaddies. Short term pain for long term gain. It is now coming to a point where that short term gain will have to end. Lets just see what this squad is capable of before we call for wenger or the boards heads. Thats all im saying
266. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:57 pm
262 TL We have Sagna, a very reasonable signing. Palacio if he comes off may be reasonable, Dudu is “reasonable”
I think most ppl want to move forward. That requires spunking money. If it could be done on the cheap then the top three would not be bleeding cash like a train wreck victim.
267. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:57 pm
It keeps the fans on board. Keeps them spending on gates and shirts
But it isn’t keeping the fans on board, is it.
They’re more dissatisfied now than they have been at any time under Wenger’s stewardship, and Hill-Wood constantly blabbing on about money in the bank is only stoking the fires more.
Furthermore, ticket sales are a lot slower now than they were last year. Games have been available to Red members for weeks - that wasn’t happening last season. We’re already seeing games going on general sale.
As I said, the fans aren’t that stupid.
AW has never done that before
Yes he has. He did it after selling Vieira, left us with a laughable squad, and then went and spent loads at Christmas when it was obvious he’d totally fucked things up.
The board’s statemements and Wenger’s statements point toward one thing - money earning interest in the bank.
268. DeiseGooner | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:59 pm
That requires spunking money. If it could be done on the cheap then the top three would not be bleeding cash like a train wreck victim.
for the short term - that king of money going out of the club can only be done by rich guys with nothing else to spend their money on. Then the business acumen will kick in and what then.
We dont have an investor who is willing to blow that kind of money. So it has to be done sensibly
269. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 5:59 pm
Anyhow, fibbing is a bit of a failed strategy anyway, if half of the fanbase have seen through the lies, and the other half are crucifying Wenger for his transfer policy.
270. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 6:00 pm
265 Deise you misunderstand me ( I think). I agree its long term, I dont want the boards or AW head. Yeah I know I bitch and moan but really in my heart I love our history, our Britishness, which embraces all cultures and greeds, the boards pompousness, AW idealism.
I love it all. But I also love to bitch and moan and carry on. I dont like liars but I undertsand that sometimes ppl dont really want the truth
271. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 6:02 pm
It’s a case of discerning the truth though, isn’t it.
And given Wenger’s attitude, his statements about the market, and his philosophies, I think the signposts would indicate that the board are indeed telling the truth on this one.
272. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 6:04 pm
269 Eric on sunday they were singing AW name. The guy is so talented that he can deliver entertaining, spirited football on a shoe string budget. But if we finish behaind spurs there will be a bloodbath. And if we dont get fourth then all those clever calculations will look very silly. A bit like sending Johan a brummin.
273. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 6:06 pm
OK then guys lets limit the discussion to the ACTIONS you have seen. Lets forget about what they have SAID. If you had never heard a word, and you had to decide what was going on, based on visible facts, long and short term trends, what would you think then? Would it be different?
274. DeiseGooner | August 22nd, 2007 at 6:08 pm
Why are you so convinced that the board and manager are lying ?
As for finishing behind spurs … not gonna happen mate. That club is trying to be something they are not . ie a big club. Just look at the recent goings on with sacking Jol and trying to get another manager in. Jol is doing a good job there dragging them from mid table to top6 and what do they do. Go behind his back and try appoind a new manager after 3 games. Then when that fails they give him an ultimatum of 4th or lose your job. Do they think they are Real Madrid or what. Just look at the money they have spend in the last few seasons and the “success” they have achieved.
A workmate is a spud and he said Jol should have walked after that treatment.
275. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 6:09 pm
Deise They’re more dissatisfied now than they have been at any time under Wenger’s stewardship, and Hill-Wood constantly blabbing on about money in the bank is only stoking the fires more.

Deise

277. DeiseGooner | August 22nd, 2007 at 6:15 pm
re comment 273. You can really do that munitionsman. what if like you say we hear nothing from the club. We have moved to the grove and have spend 60 million on players in 2 seasons. You would think the club is well in the money. but then what happens when we see the books and realize that we have gotten into so much debt due to spending that on players. You need the info the club gives (not lies, theres no benefit to lying to the fans) and the actual actions of the club/manager.
278. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 6:16 pm
274 I did think spuds might trouble us, but not now. As for fourth, well there are a lot of new kids on the block and they have new shiney bikes.
Why do I think they are lying?
1) AW philiosphy seems to have become extreme quite rapidly. ppl dont normally change that fast.
2) This change coincides with ashburton.
3) Even a blind man could see our squad is paper thin. If it is obvious to nobodies like us then how obvious would it be to a football genius.
4) The club is being circled by sharks and any hint of insolvency is like blood in the water.
5) As Julius Ceasar said to Brutas “Me think you do protest to much”. I believe the board have said more times than really required that AW has plently of loot. A bit like the old “vote of confidence” in a manager.
Lying isnt anywhere near as rare as us little ppl would love to believe.
279. munitionsman | August 22nd, 2007 at 6:22 pm
277 Thats exactly what happened at Leeds. But that is hypothetical. Because that is not the actions we see.
Do you really believe that AW has constructed this squad as some sort of ego machine? It does have some merit as an arguement, but where is the history of him behaving like that? It’s hard to accept. And if you dont accept that AW has “lost it” then the only other possibility (at least that I can fathom) is that they are lying.
Or maybe they are not lying at all. Maybe its true. There is money, but as a mnagement group they choose not to spend it for business reasons cos it aint cash its debt. Its a subtle difference.
280. DeiseGooner | August 22nd, 2007 at 6:23 pm
1) AW philiosphy seems to have become extreme quite rapidly. ppl dont normally change that fast.
Unless there has been a conscious decision to take that route for the long term planning of keeping up with the jones’
2) This change coincides with ashburton.
Again premeditated. It began while the grove was being planned and was supposed to come to fruition 2 seasons into the grove years. We are in year 2 now.
3) Even a blind man could see our squad is paper thin. If it is obvious to nobodies like us then how obvious would it be to a football genius.
Wenger has never worked with a squad the size of chelskis or man u. Granted they were more experienced squads but the numbers match. (I do agree we need another player at least)
4) The club is being circled by sharks and any hint of insolvency is like blood in the water.
And the sharks have been told to shove off have they not, board say they aint selling. (might be biding their time though, ill give you that 1)
5) As Julius Ceasar said to Brutas “Me think you do protest to much”. I believe the board have said more times than really required that AW has plently of loot. A bit like the old “vote of confidence” in a manager.
If the media keep asking do we have money , cause Wenger aint spending, they they answer.
Lying isnt anywhere near as rare as us little ppl would love to believe.
Neither is conspiracy as rampant as some would believe
phew…

Did Fergie lose it when man u went a few seasons without a trophy. He added a few players (all young) and boosted an aging squad to win the league. Now hes investing in youth (albeit all in one go, and not over a number of years) When scholes, giggs, van der sar, neville all step down in a season or 2 , what happens then.

I agree with all of the above who think that AFC is a bit skint. But one thing we do know for sure is that we have about 12m from the sales of Reyes and Freddie which has not been spent. We all know Wenger waits until the last minute as players values fall the nearer the transfer window is to being shut.
I would not be suprised at all if we saw 1/2 more transfers coming in at the last minute. They might not be the transfers everybody wants but they could happen.
291. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 7:30 pm
There’s an easy way to ascertain whether or not we have any money - what do the accounts say?
I am an accountant for aliving after all (don’t all hug me at once).
You have to consider all the facts, and the ‘facts’ include the statements that have been made, as well as the actions - because from our vantage point (assuming we don’t find said accounts), it’s the interpretation that counts.
A bit late to this party anyway.
My money’s on money being there, because lying is a strategy that makes no sense.
292. Eric | August 22nd, 2007 at 7:31 pm

Very wrong.
Wenger does not always until the end of the window - he did it once, but that’s because he was forced into deals beyond his control.
And the values don’t fall either - they’re higher, if anything, because it’s harder for clubs to replace players they sell, and so they want to be compensated.

I am from Honduras, and would like to add a comment on Palacios. He is a very good player. He is fast and handles very well the ball. He also can score. From long distance shots, headers. I believe if he has a chance with Arsenal he will be able to show himself. From what we have heard in the news he indeed is on trial with Arsenal, what we need to know if he will get signed. Let’s wait and see what happens.

This is one step too far from Arsene. All this tight-fisted penny-pinching is a joke. Anyone see Lehmann tonight? Fuckd it on Fat frank’s goal and nearly giften Owen another. Awful. Finished keeper but AW wants to save money. And now a Honduran nobody winger who is so good he has to go ON TRIAL? Is Wenger serious? 10 goals in 100 games in a league worse than the Croatian one? Is Wenger even serious about us being a big club anymore? Ever imagine champions like United, Pool, Inter, Barca etc…the big clubs desperately in need of a winger signing someone on TRIAL? Pathetic. This is the straw that broke the camel’s back. Why the fuck do we pay the money we do, more than ANY club in Europe -to see a board fleecing the fans, taking the piss and signing now HONDURAN wingers ON TRIAL? Wow…this is bad…really bad….am starting to think Wenger is past his sell-by date. Great manager but living in a time-warp and needs to get with the times. Doesn’t wanna get ‘ripped off’ in the market -but the club don’t mind ripping off the fans with ticket prices. Joke.

AW is being plain stubborn now. Its obvious that he’s determined to show the world that HE can achieve success without ‘wasting’ money on overpriced English players or ‘proven’ talent.
Its a dangerous tactic, and I honestly think he’s treating Arsenal fans, the players, with contempt.
Its like every single pundit, fan, player and journalist recognises that we need proven talent. But Arsene is basically saying “fuck you, this is my team, I’ll do what I want with it”.
Its just stubbornness now and its pointless. Especially as we all know that this team is so close to greatness.
But. But….the transfer window is still open. You can hear it creaking shut, but it is still open…..just.
320. Dave | August 22nd, 2007 at 10:42 pm
Tickets for the Prague game on general sale now, read it on arsenal.com…. Chelski fans are already mocking us. One thing is for sure, it’s probably the first time that Arsenal can’t sell out a Champions League game at the Grove, even if it’s only a qualifyer. Nevertheless I wouldn’t interpret too much into it as it’s a midweek game and we are 2-0 ahead but let’s wait and see if this repeats itself in the future.

I hope they do… lol..

323. Eric | August 23rd, 2007 at 12:37 am
Eduardo scored a header…
But I think Phil also got injured. So Wenger’s Economics degree brainiac decision to send Djourou on loan is looking fucking stupid after just two games.
Never mind - I just hope this Palacios kid is the real deal - but I’m sick of Wenger’s penny-pinching.
Also, according to the Express, he’s just signed a new contract. I’m not quite sure why, but I’m hardly jumping for joy.
324. Geoff Bitch | August 23rd, 2007 at 12:52 am
Fire Wenger! He’s a tightfisted cunt of a man and i wish he’d take his froggie twatspeak somewhere else. he built our success, and know the arrogant tosspiece is tearing us apart with his stupid transfer policies and tightfisted budget.
CUNT.
325. Leo | August 23rd, 2007 at 1:42 am
Oh bollocks Arsene Wenger has signed a new contract at Arsenal….SERIOUS questions need to be asked of this board such as: what has Arsene Wenger done over the course of the last 3 seasons to merit a pay-rise? Surely there should be some kinda performance-related deal? Wenger is literally just doing as he wishes and is under no pressure whatsoever from this board who care only about their deep pockets. It seems despite the rose-tinted protests about ‘having no money’ (this is nothing but a cop-out, we have cash) that many fans have decided to vote with their wallets.
Somebody said earlier that this is the unhappiest that fans have been with Arsene Wenger since he’s been in charge. I could not agree more. I rate him and he is a top manager but I think it’s high time most fans stopped this cult-worship of Wenger whereby he can just do whatever he pleases and should and can never be questioned. That is why AW now feels he can do exactly as he wants. It’s a nice idealistic idea in principle. But his job is not to achieve his nice dreams but to win us trophies. Simple. His idealistic way has proven to fail. 3 years straight. I am already mentioning this season because it is ckear we will do nothing of note this season and the buck stops with the board and Wenger. Thing is…I think it takes balls of steel to go out there and take a gamble on the transfer market on a Ribery…a Malouda…a Nasri etc…it’s too easy to sign shit Honduran embryos on trial. It’s an easy get-out clause in the event you fail. How often did we hear Wenger moaning about ‘lack of experience’ last season? Whose fault was that then? His.
When AW went on about injuries…again whose fault for leaving us with such a short squad? His again.
I really think that things could get much better if fans started exercising an opinion of their own and asking questions. But as long as people keep worshipping Wenger for finishing 4th and insult anybody who questions him then dictator Arsene will do exactly as he wants with no opposition whatsoever. And sorry I don’t want that.
Who runs this club again?
326. Leo | August 23rd, 2007 at 1:45 am
A selection of top quotes from Gooners on other blogs:
”We desperately need a left wing but due to the ‘inflated market’ Arsene is reluctant to buy. However we have sold players in this market and currently have made a healthy profit. He is a penny pincher, full stop.”
” The Spuds have shown that money does not but success but that doesn’t mean that you can always do it on the cheap either, look at Song. Martins or Anelka would be great. If we lose Fabregas, Hleb and Rosiky (through injury or suspension) we’ll lose virtually all our creativity.”
327. Leo | August 23rd, 2007 at 1:49 am
Btw it’s confirmed, Senderos is injured. Fabulous.
So in this light it is further evidence of Wenger’s APPALLING decision-making. It couldn’t get any more funny if it weren’t so dam sad. I’m sure some happy-pill munchers will try and ocnvince us this was nothing but a cunning plan by Arsene to play Song at centre-back. Just like he turned Henry from winger to striker he will make Song into the new Nesta! Lmfao. The decision to send Djourou to Brum was nifty Arsene. Yeah…we don’t need any players. It ‘disrupts team harmony’. I remember the signings of Yorke and Cole really disrupting team harmony at United when they won that treble and back-to-backs huh?
A paper-thin squad just became invisible.

********** NEWS ALERT ***********
£40million Kaka drops Arsenal hint (09:23 August, 22, 2007)
Kaka has revealed if he moved to England, he would only ever join Arsenal Football Club.
The AC Milan forward is widely regarded as one of the finest players on the planet, and played an instrumental part in knocking Manchester United out of the UEFA Champions League last season.
Barcelona and Real Madrid have made no secret of their desire to sign him and are willing to pay £40million to land his signature, although he insists he sees his immediate future in Italy.
And as far as a move to England is concerned, Kaka has dealt the Gunners a huge boost by revealing were he to move to the Premier League, they are the only club with a chance of luring him.
“I’d only ever join Arsenal in England,” he is quoted in the Daily Star. “I love the way Arsenal play football. If I were to come to England I would like to play for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger because of their style of football.”

329. Gelbs lives a sad life | August 23rd, 2007 at 2:05 am
Congrats Leo/Gelbs, you’ve done an amazing job of “state the obvious” with a Senderos injury. I’m sure this makes you happy, I mean, living a life as sad as yours, misery to anyone makes you feel a lot better about yourself.
Now lets hope this gives you enough self-confidence to finally move out of your mother’s basement, and finally stop impersonating/switching usernames on Arsenal blogs.
330. Vincent | August 23rd, 2007 at 2:09 am
I can just picture it now. Kaka literally begs Arsene to sign him. But Arsene turns around, after just having made a £90 million profit on selling off Cesc, Denilson and Kolo….and he says to us:
”Yes I rate Kaka very highly but where would I fit him? I already have Song, Lansbury, Flamini and Sunu. So we are covered enough. Besides football is about 11 players. We have a squad of 13 in total and I have just sent RVP on loan to Coventry’.
So fucking what if a top-class player wants to join us? That bastard in charge don’t have and will never have the balls to make a big top-drawer signing. Which begs the question why we moved grounds? I thought it would mean having more money to compete in the transfer market and signing better quality players than Song and Senderos. Apparently though, we moved into the new ground to sell off more top talent than ever before, be constantly ’skint’ (what a crock) and to take Honduran janitors on trial cos our cunt board are such fucking tight misers. And our manager is even worse. It is just a royal piss-take.
331. Leo | August 23rd, 2007 at 2:12 am
329 I am not Gelbs. You on the other hand are a bit of a silly cunt for making accusations you could never in a million years prove. Well can you? Thought not. You’re a tit. I just gave my opinion. Wenger looks a complete mug for sending Djourou out on loan and leaving this squad short. It’s simple fact. Just like the fact that you’re an idiot who creates stories he cannot back up with evidence. Idiot. I said I rate Wenger but he is making serious mistakes. And if you can’t accept criticism of Lord Arsene then I suggest your mum uses some of her shag-money and get you an education so you can get some objectivity.
332. Vincent | August 23rd, 2007 at 2:17 am
Arsenal Football Club = the retirement home where managers can forever live off past glories. 3 years of evr-decereasing rubbish management and results? Why not have…a PAY-RISE!
**************************************************************************
”he Gunners boss has been stalling on signing an extension to his current deal, which
runs out at the end of this season.
But Wenger has now given his word that he will commit his future to the North London club until 2011. The new contract is worth around £3 million a year.
There had been speculation that the Frenchman would want get-out clauses, allowing him to leave Arsenal at the end of each year – but that is not the case.
Wenger’s agreement is a major boost to Gunners chairman Peter Hill-Wood, who saw vice-chairman David Dein leave the club in April. Dein’s departure upset the manager and led him to consider his future.”
3 more years of signing Ugandan embryos, leaving our squad short, refusing to spend the fans’ money and lying to the fans…oh and finishing 4th and 20-odd pts behind the leaders. I can hardly wait….and here was me dreaming about Ramos from Seville in 2008…

Transfer news
AW announced today the signing a new left winger named Hombre Fellatio. The 7yr old Puerto Rican champion has scored 25 times in one game in the under eights, so his pedigree is well established. He will transfer for an undisclosed fee ( as is the norm with AW) but it is rumoured to in the region of 35 peso’s.
Hombre and the entire Fellatio familly are currently enroute to London in a sea container.

341. munitionsman | August 23rd, 2007 at 7:33 am
Eric 291 Firstly please accept my condolences on your choice of profession
But my line of thought is that there is no cash, neither is there debt. There is simply a ratio of debt/equity revenue/ expenditure.
That being the case it is quite factual to say “we have money” becuase they have the ability to borrow for players any time they choose. But the fact is that they ( not AW alone but the entire managment structure of which AW is the face) choose not to, in order to improve the debt/ equity ratio.
If this is for the long term good of the club, and the signiture of a long term contract by AW and refusal to sell club by board would indicate that it is, then that is very sound managment and we have to go through this pain to emerge as a club that can continue to compete with oil oligarks and yankee franchise wankers.
If on the other hand it is to fatten the piggy for market, then that is a very different thing.
Only time will tell.
Now can we talk about my tax situation….

We should sign Palacios, Wenger´s transfer policy is the best and I don´t know why you bitches are saying all that stuff about him.
But he HAS to drop Lehmann and get Almunia in.
If Senderos is injured we have to get Djourou back.

Actually, had a look and couldn’t find anything about Phil being injured. Anyone got any news? Ta
Found this from our good old pal Davor Suker though;
Former Arsenal star Davor Suker says Eduardo Da Silva will outshine Liverpool’s Fernando Torres in the Premiership this season.
He said: “Arsenal fans can be completely relaxed that Wenger has got this signing spot on - Da Silva is a great buy.
“Once he has settled in he will show he has all the talent and quality in the world to score a lot of goals - and be one of the best strikers in the world.
“He is just as good as Torres and we will see which player makes the bigger impact. They have got a big year ahead of them.

I am not asking for the club to ’spend big’. What I am asking (and have done to the club, what a waste of time that was) is whay the club/manager seem soooo wary of strengthening the team? We have lost players, some er, big name players, yet we have not added to the squad sufficiently, in my opinion.
I know there are a few days left of the transfer window, but it is a ridiculuous state of affairs when we are all praying that Wenger will actually sign someone and ;”ooh, he’s waiting till the prices drop.”
Has anyone been to a sale before? When you go to the sales late, all you get left with is the shit no one else wants.
Wenger’s comments of late have been strange and worrying; he cannot find any signings. Either they do not exist or they are too expensive!!! What kind of shite is that? Course they are expensive, that’s what happens when the market has been artificially inflated due to all these foreign crooks and their ill gotten gains being thrown around like there’s no tomorrow.
Deal with it and spend the cash. So, you might have to fork out a million or two more than you wanted? Deal with it. Noel

Typical England last night;
Started like a train, huffed and puffed, fizzled out, conceeded a soft soft goal, lose the plot, run out of ideas, start hoofing it to the freak that is Crouch and well, lose.
Richards looked great at RB, Joe Cole was very good on the left, Carrick was anonymous, Fat Frank was his usual greedy fat self, Smith, actually had some nice touches and Owen was pretty sharp. Shorey was, well pretty garbage. can he even pass straight? never an England player. Dyer was rubbish, SWP looked pretty sharp.
Overall a typical performance and result.

Guys, honestly its getting a bit bored on this Blog listening to tirade of the “True Fans” on Wenger. He has signed new contract and so there you go guys, 3 more years of Transfer policy which guys so loathe. Since you guys are supposedly the true fans as you go and watch Arsenal in Emirates, then if you so annoyed at the AFC board, why not do the following
1. Arrange a protest march to AFC and demand answers from them
2. Boycott a Premiership game and let them play in empty stadium
3. Storm the AGM and as True Fans demand explanations for not signing Super class players like Quaresma, Martins, Anelka etc
4. Use placards and create songs about transfer policy during premiership games in Emirates
If you cannot do anything like these, then shut up and don’t use obscene language against Wenger and Board

367. Dave | August 23rd, 2007 at 9:04 am
Wenger had the whole fucking summer time to strenghten the squad, now it’s definetely too late. If he was interested in Quaresma or an other quality winger, he would have already signed him. It’s poor management when he comes out saying that he couldn’t find the right players. What the fuck is he expecting anyway? Ribery to join us for 5 pence or what? Proven top class players doesn’t come on the cheap. And you are also right saying that we as fans doesn’t expect him to sign Ronaldinho, Kaka, Gerrard or Henry all at the same time. But what we can expect is that he signs quality because we are paying the highest ticket prices in the world and surely not for the sake of watching youth football. When I see what promising start the likes of Torres and Ribery had for their new team I’m really disappointed by his decision not to move for them. But hey, as I said many times, I’m willing to give Wenger a last chance this season to prove that he can achieve something but in the case he should fail again I will be the first to demand his sacking.

At the very least, it will stabilise the club/team and show that he is there for the foreseeable future, thus giving the players more confidence in him. Look at how unsettled United became when they all thought Fergie was off? So, thats a positive.

“3 more years of signing Ugandan embryos, leaving our squad short, refusing to spend the fans’ money and lying to the fans…oh and finishing 4th and 20-odd pts behind the leaders. I can hardly wait….and here was me dreaming about Ramos from Seville in 2008…”
Wake up Vincent, Wenger has never signed a Ugandan Embryo, bt if he were to send scouts here, he might buy whole cluns instead. We have quality players and the next great team to come from Africa after Ivory Coast will be the Uganda Cranes

If you cannot do anything like these, then shut up and don’t use obscene language against Wenger and Board

i think u r a fuck-wit
397. Eric | August 23rd, 2007 at 9:43 am
Actually, I’m not sure about that TC.
1 - Platini may get his way, and only the top two sides in each league will get CL football. Personally, I’m fine with that, but it will mean that scrabbling for fourth is no longer acceptable. It would likely rejuvenate the UEFA cup from the Mickey Mouse trophy it’s become, but the money will always be in the CL.
2 - Ticket sales are already a lot slower this year than they were last. So far we’ve been ok, but if we’re out of all trophies by christmas every year for the next 3 years, I guarantee you, finding 60k ‘fans’ to pay our exorbitant ticket prices will suddenly become a lot more difficult.
Wenger won’t get by scrabbling around with kids for fourth spot every year - he hasn’t earned this contract, but it’s the best thing for the club at this stage, and will at least give us stability.
398. Geekov | August 23rd, 2007 at 9:44 am
Anyone else recall an ANR post by our dear old chum Myles, where he stated that he knew of some hush hush deals going on but couldn’t tell us about em?

I can just picture it now. Kaka literally begs Arsene to sign him. But Arsene turns around, after just having made a £90 million profit on selling off Cesc, Denilson and Kolo….and he says to us:
”Yes I rate Kaka very highly but where would I fit him? I already have Song, Lansbury, Flamini and Sunu. So we are covered enough. Besides football is about 11 players. We have a squad of 13 in total and I have just sent RVP on loan to Coventry’.

Then it will get picked up by the cameras and seen on MOTD and you may well start a revolution…. or you could protest outside the Grove? Make placards, get a petition, have a vocal protest, write letter, etc etc?

AW is being plain stubborn now. Its obvious that he’s determined to show the world that HE can achieve success without ‘wasting’ money on overpriced English players or ‘proven’ talent.
Its a dangerous tactic, and I honestly think he’s treating Arsenal fans, the players, with contempt.
Its like every single pundit, fan, player and journalist recognises that we need proven talent. But Arsene is basically saying “fuck you, this is my team, I’ll do what I want with it”.

MORNING EVERYONE!
Just thought I’d let you know that Sagna made his debut for France last night, away against Slovakia. He came on as a sub in the second half and actually didn’t do too badly. Clerc started the game. I imagine Chimbonda would got on ahead of him but I believe he’s injured, as he wasn’t on the bench. Still, Sagna did pretty well. Nice to see him win his first cap. But still a long way to go before he’s selected ahead of Clerc or Chimbonda to replace the injured Sagnol.
Anelka and Henry played up front together. Henry scored. Anelka looked really sharp and combined very well with Henry. How I wish we could have kept Henry AND signed Anelka.

That would imply that you pathetic ramblings are significant enough as to cause us rose tints some kind of distress, like a thorn would.
You are more like a thorn dressed in a nappy with MUG written on its forehead - you are more something that we collectively laugh at as opposed to something that causes us distress.

haha, fair one. I was pleased to see him come on - it’s good for Arsenal. All I’m saying is that he’s not ahead of Clerc and Sagnol yet. He can probably fight Chimbonda for 3rd choice. Still don’t think he’s worth £7.5M. But hey, he’s here now, so let’s get the best out of him.

The thing is, i can see improvements in the side, both playing wise and attitude. If Wenger could actually strengthen in the areas we have spouted about for time immemorial, then i really think we could do something this year. To not strengthen now, would be a travesty.

We’ll see. For me, it’s too early to judge. I think the bare minimum this year is still to be within spitting distance of the top by Christmas - but there’s a lot of football to play between now and then.
I thought our Fulham performance was fairly good, and unlike what others have said, I think we did well against Blackburn too. We’ll see if we can keep it up, but we will need a VERY strong start this year.

What will be the team for the league cup this year???
Fabianski
Traore
Nordtveit
Senderos
Hoyte
Gibb/Diaby
Merida/Song
Denilson
???
Bendtner
Walcott
Walcott may play on the right leaving a space up front but i’m not totally sure of our options in these positions. I’m hoping Merida will get some playing time but no doubt Song will play instead.
Barazite can play midfield or just behind the attackers I imagine.

I know the league cup is pony and I have confidence in our first team to do well this year but all it seems to be on here is moaning about who we have not signed.
I too am disappointed by our lack of any signings every day when I look on BBC, we don’t even get mentioned in the transfer gossip anymore!
So I decided if we aren’t going to buy anyone perhaps one of the youngsters will shine in this competition and it will be kind of like getting a new player!!!
477. Geekov | August 23rd, 2007 at 10:48 am
So, Hleb won’t be playing behing RvP come Saturday.
Hope he plays him wide left then. He looks far more dangerous there than on the right.
Theo can play wide right.
Does no one else think that the whole sorry Palacios thing is just another wind up? I mean, it’s like some fucker is just looking for names that sound mighty similar to that other palacio; the striker.
Palacio = Spanish for Windup, apparently.

Gilles; I like your style fella!
The carling Cup has been a great way for younger players to get competitive matches against decent opposition. The fact they ngot to the final has vindicated Wenger doing this.
This year, I hope that we get to see more youngsters given the chance to shine.
As well as the ones mentioned by you, i’d also like to see; lansbury, Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson, Fonte and Randall.

485. Geekov | August 23rd, 2007 at 10:56 am
483; You talkin to me?
486. ----Arsenal Fan---#1 | August 23rd, 2007 at 10:59 am
Merida is the best player in the youth set up along with Barazite !
I see al the reserves matches and I see all the Spain under 17 matches.
He is pure class, like Cesc.
He scored yesterday, and gave a great assist

Oh, and yes…I was talking to YOU geekov
488. Eric | August 23rd, 2007 at 11:02 am
484 Geekov - I’ve heard he was great that day - unfortunately, it’s one of the few reserve matches I missed altogether.
I think Merida’s nothing special. He’s been ordinary most times I’ve seen him, and never really stood out. It’s all about Barazite at youth level. Merida’s unbelievably overhyped.

merida is the best

If we don’t beat City on saturday, Wenger should be publicly flogged. Grrrr

Arsenal Fan; The reason i didn’t mention Merida was coz, as I said, I was talking about players that had NOT been mentioned by Grimandi already, fella.
ya see?

i would like to see wenger flex his muscles in the transfer market and sign Robinho or Quaresma..this would send a strong message to liverepool, manure, the russians…we are in desperate need for a left winger coz tomas will get injured again and then what..Robinho&Quaresma are both itching to prove themselves after they failed to live up to expectations..I think Arsenal is a club that would afford them the opportunity to play with freedom…we apparentlydo have money to spend so whats stopping us…we should also try to get an established central defender on a free transfer, what will happen if toure or senderos get injured before gallas comes back..im not really mad about the idea of playing gilberto in defence..what do you gooners say??????
494. lazola | August 23rd, 2007 at 11:26 am
i diagree with Dick(aka willy) about sagna being avarage..where have you been dude..sagna has been our best player thus far..wenger watched more than 60 times before he made up his mind about him..Sagna was plkayer of the season for his club..now it takes bloody good performances for a defender to win such an accolade..So would you rather we spent 25 million on dan alves..7.5 fpr sagna is a bargain in my opinion..you are becoming to sound like Gelbs….Eduardo scored 34 goals in the croation league..and granted its not that strong of a league..but guranteed eduardo should give us at least 15 goals this season..Fabianski was voted best polish goalkeeper 4 2 seasons…what are you talking about…
495. Yorkie | August 23rd, 2007 at 11:39 am
Dick (Willy) = CUNT, get over yourself doom monger. how can you write of people you’ve never seen and if you had watch sagna play you’d realise he is jus what our defence needed.
i bet you moaned when henry joined the club. tosser
496. Frudicus | August 23rd, 2007 at 11:48 am
SAGNA = CRAP - I DONT FUCKIN THINK SO!!! Sagna is an awesome defender, i think he has been the buy of the season for us so far so get some sense and then come back!
As for eduardo, when he has played, hes looked pretty good, brings something else to the team, wake up sunshine. We have some of the best talents in the world here at Arsenal.
497. Sharad | August 23rd, 2007 at 5:18 pm
sagna hasbeen a great buy. so apparently is dudu. got a great left foot. plus the workrate and touchness is good AW is a genius. Lets not forget that.
Things at Arsenal are done the Arsenal way. Don’t ya forget that!
That’s why when we win we remember it as ours righteously.
I’m sure a chelsea fan can never EVER say that.

all of the ones who talkes shi* can now realize that this player(wilson palacios) which was dumped by Arsenal and other teams. If Wenger would have kept this guy he wouldnt have to play all of those skinny little kids he plays every game who dont even know how to wipe their asses yet. This player is now one of the “Elite” midfielders in the world who is being speculated by teams like Barcelona FC, Juventus, Real Madrid, Liverpool, etc.. Oh and one more thing, Wilson palacios has a brother, who plays on the same team he played on and on the Honduran National Squad, hes like 21? he plays Centerback. Trust me that kid has talent Wigan is most likely to take him , lol they been in love with hondurans after they signed palacios, figueroa, thomas.. And i have been studying this countries football so well that i know that wigan has two players on loan that are hondurans, each about 19 years of age, one of them is a quality striker, hes currently the top scorer in the honduran football league, he plays on the same team palacios played on.
