The Community Shield from an Arsenal perspective

0 guns August 6th, 2007

As weekend readers will know, I was at the Community Shield yesterday to see Manchester United beat Chelsea on penalties. To be honest, there wasn’t a huge amount to be read into the performance of our rivals, as both still have players to return from injury and signings to complete.

One thing that stood out was Man Utd’s dire lack of defensive cover. Brown and Silvestre are about as effective as The Chuckle Brothers, whilst John O’Shea has completed his transformation from average defender to averager midfielder.

On the Chelsea side of things, it struck me that if Arjen Robben leaves, they may be lacking somewhat in the final third, especially when Didier Drogba goes off to African Nations. Drogba and Essien are vital players in the blue machine, and their absense, combined with the loss of Mikel and Kalou, could allow any potential challengers in.

So if we sign a winger, Chelsea sell Robben, and Drogba, Neville, and Evra are remarkably unlucky with injuries, we might have a chance. Excellent.

I’m off on my holidays today. If there’s no update tomorrow, assume that a) there’s no internet access in the hotel, or b) I never made it.

Adieu.

Morning All…..

Got back late Sunday night from a wonderful trip to Amsterdam - good turnout of Gooners for the Ajax game - saw all of 4 Athletico fans and 12 Lazio fans - and about 500-1000 arse fans….

Weather was great - and the evening kick off definately helped - they let us take our weed into the ground and there were a fair few joints being smoked in the Arsenal end - which was to the south west end of the ground - upper tier.

The game itself was a great test - away from home, big crowd for Ajax and if you watched the game, you will agree it wasn’t played in the spirit of a friendly - lots of meaty tackles and battles all over the park.

Ajax looked more dangerous, we put on a good passing display, but never really threatened - whereas Ajax had a few shots - Sneijder looking the most dangerous.

Second half we pressed a bit more and RVP got his reward from a great run by Clichy - overall a good performance, eboue is enjoying his midfield role and I feel a lot more secure with Sagna in that RB slot - he doesn’t have as much pace as Eboue - but sticks to his role - my only worry with Eboue is that he will try too much (still seems to get that head rush defenders get when they bomb forward - which results in him losing posession) - but im sure over time that will chance.

Clichy was great all game, as was RVP - Eduardo looked very lively when he came on and seems to link up better with RVP than with Bendter - I am very glad Flamini is staying - he had another good game in the middle and made a lot of great interceptions/tackles that started our moves.

I will look to post some video online and put the links on here - have the cup presentation and after that the boys ran over to the fans and lifted the cup in front of us - great night.

The train back to Amsterdam was full of beered up gooners singing their hearts out and with it being Gay Pride day in Amsterdam and their being a dance festival on - the city centre saw some heavy partying that night!!

P.S. Reyes got booed every time he got the ball - and on the Sunday - we were out shopping and bumbed into a few Athletico players - but no jose in sight - he must have decided to stay in the hotel instead of run the risk of being booed in the street by Arsenal fans!!!

I managed to find out a bit about Eduardo De Silva’s family, thought you guys might be interested.

Eduardo De Silva was born underground at Rio Dejinero station to Roland and Rosie Rat. His brother Ricardo Rat was one of the leading cheese steallers in brazil and was feared for his razor sharp teethwhich could gnaw through anything. Ricardo once Gnawed through an electric cable which meant the Brazil authorities done a crack down on Rats and slaughtered them by the thousands. Its for this reason they stowed away on a ship to Croatia where eduardo realised he could gnaw through defences just as he could mops.

I;ve got a new found respect for him.

I agree on comments re chelsea, they really missed drogba yesterday, january will be tough for them.

On united, we would obviously miss players of the class of neville and evra but against most teams brown and tweety will surfice.

• 30. TopCat  |  August 6th, 2007 at 9:42 am

Chelsea played with Ben Haim and Johnson in their back 4 - and still only conceded 1 goal against Man Utd - going forward - SWP was lively and Malouda scored, but other than that Chelsea looked lacking in the final 3rd.

With Terry out for a month and Drogba out for ??? (does anyone know?) I think they may struggle to get going (wishful thinking perhaps).

• 31. Red Rupert  |  August 6th, 2007 at 9:51 am

well, Brown Silvestre and O’Shea won’t be playing most of the time when the first choice players are back - but they’re god enough for what most of the PL has to offer.

Interesting to get an outsider’s perspective. I wonder what Doncaster fans have to say about the match.

• 32. Dick (aka Willy)  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:03 am

We should have signed Malouda when we had the chance.

• 33. Bergy  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:05 am

You guys think arsene wil stil bring in a new player?

• 34. gazzap  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:09 am

Malouda or Ribery should have been ours. If we spend stupid money on someone like Queresma then that goes doubly so.

• 35. DeiseGooner  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:10 am

Malouda said in a recent interview that he wanted to go to chelski. It takes 3 agreements to sign a player , selling club , buying club and the player. Did we have the chance to sign him ? or was that paper talk. For what its worth, going by some of Wengers recent comments i think there will be 1 more addition to the squad. Who that will be i wont even begin to speculate, Wenger will pull something out of the hat im sure.

• 39. AFIF  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:24 am

Arsene Wenger has revealed he is in contract negotiations with the Arsenal board.

The Gunners manager has yet to extend his current contract and there is a sense of uncertainty surrounding the French tactician’s future at the Emirates.

However, Wenger has eased the worries of the Arsenal faithful by admitting talks are taking place and he insists all will soon become clear.

“I will come out at the right moment, do not worry about that,” Wenger said.

The Arsenal boss has also reiterated that he will not be panic buying ahead of the end of the transfer window.

Arsenal’s main Premier League rivals, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have all been busy in the pre-season transfer market, but Wenger is content.

• 40. WillyG  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:24 am

This is what M.Lippi said about Quaresma……One of my favourites is Ricardo Quaresma. The day I go back to coaching I will do everything possible to sign him. Quaresma could make any club have that extra step up in quality.” but what`s important is what Wenger thinks

• 41. Jimbo  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:24 am

Wenger sign a winger? What a hoot!

• 42. WillyG  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:25 am

Luis Figo has exclusively revealed to Calcio Italia that Porto winger Ricardo Quaresma would be a perfect replacement for him at Inter.

• 43. Glenn Helder  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:26 am

Even if we do sign Quaresma - and I would be surprised if we splashed that 12m + on him or anyone else for that matter. is anyone else sceptical thet he is the player we need next season. There’s no doubt he has skill but it would be a bit of a gamble on a player who I think has potential Reyes qualities about him - ie inability to settle in, would he be as effective in the Premiership when the tackles fly in ?

I guess we’ll find out if we’re signing anyone in the next few days - I really hope we get at least one. Two would be ideal though.

• 44. TopCat  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:26 am

Again I agree with DeiseGooner.

Malouda has said how he only ever wanted to join Chelsea, how he use to fly over to watch Chelsea play before he signed - etc etc…

Maybe AW was interested, but if the player chooses another team, then what else can we do?

I would prefer not to hear talk about who we should have signed - we can be here all day and bottom line is we have who we have - and those are the players we will be starting the season with.

Malouda scored a great, great goal - but other than that - I don’t recall him being so dangerous - if anything SWP was Chelsea’s livliest player.

Not saying Malouda isn’t good - Im saying its not the end of the world that we didn’t sign him.

And Wenger is being his usual cagey self re transfers which implies we will sign someone tomorrow.

• 45. TopCat  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:28 am

Glenn - who would be your 2 signings then?

(within reason).

• 46. Jimbo  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:28 am

Why even discuss Quaresma?

We aren’t even linked to him.

Wenger’s done in the transfer market - time to deal with it, I suggest.

• 47. AFIF  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:28 am

TO 40. WILLY.G IM GLAD TO HAVE WENGER AS OUR COACH BUT IN THE SAME TIME I HOPE HE THINK AS LIPPI ARSENAL REALLY NEED A PLAYER AS QUARESMA COZ WE SAW IN OUR PREPARATION GAME HOW MUCH WE NEED FOR A WINGER AS HIM PLUS OUR NEED FOR A STRIKER.EDUARDO DA SILVA HE DOESNT LOOK LIKE HENRY THIS IS WHAT FABREGAS SAID !!!

• 48. WillyG  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:28 am

Post 26 Super Class…..You got nothing. Why are you trying to get us all trilled for nothing? you don`t have proof, you don`t have links, just you typing bull.Do you think anyone will belive you?

• 49. oranje  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:29 am

huh? i thought SWP was totally crap last nite? i was suprised he wasnt subbed. but then maybe because mourinho didnt have a better replacement available.

• 50. DeiseGooner  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:29 am

Going by the community shield game not much has changed with either Chelski or ManU from last season. but it wasnt against these two that our season fell apart. It was against the weaker sides in the league that we let ourselves down. That is what needs to change if we are to have a go at winning the title. And from what i have seen over the last few preseason games is that we can grind out a result when we are not playing at our best. Count how many games the top 2 won when they were out of sorts and you will see the points difference. All the top 4 teams can be devastating on their day, its when they are up against it and have to dig deep for a win that the difference was seen last season. ManU and Chelski were able to win these games. Liverpool and The Arsenal were not.

• 51. WillyG  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:30 am

yeah Jimbo you`re right, where all just dreaming I guess

• 52. Jimbo  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:35 am

I fear for our season at the moment.

Our biggest flaw last season was a lack of goals beyond Thierry and Van Persie - Eduardo might be a fine purchase, but the rest of the lineup simply isn’t good enough to score goals in the games that the front two do not.

Fourth, with this squad, will be a good performance - but given how much of a profit Wenger’s made this summer, you just can’t help but feel that our lack of depth in midfield will inevitably hurt us more than it should have done if Wenger had only been a little more brave.

• 53. Jimbo  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:40 am

Not that I think Quaresma’s the answer to my problems - though I am confident, Eboue isn’t either.

• 54. Ruralgoon  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:41 am

Morning all!
Funniest point of the weekend; the look on the faces of the Porto players when they’d won the rotterdam tournament….and then got presented with a piece of ceramic that looked like it’d been made by the local primary school kiddies!!!

Saw another side to Drenthe that I really didn’t like; he has a really nasty temper… he makes Eboue look logical and level-headed… and this was in a “friendly”. He has gotta be an Edgar Davids clone!

• 55. arnold  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:41 am

• 61. Rumour Mill.  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:48 am

1) Wenger may be after Riise. Its seems Riise is now out of favour at Pool and Wenger reckons that John arne riise and Clichy would make a formidable partnership on the left hand side.

2) Arsenal will make two final signings this summer, they will be announced on Tuesday. They are Royston Drenthe and Lassana Diarra.

3) As announced last week - AW is watching Ismaïl Aissati and may move for him in the next few days.

Thats all for now….. more to follow.

• 62. oranje  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:49 am

yeah, just bring sneijder coz rvp wants him, and buy quaresma or drenthe coz watever fuck reason out there..
if u’re a club manager, u’ll do double every year..
yeah, lets buy excellent players coz its no difference then going to the wet market n just point to watever u need to the shopkeeper and he will wrap it up nicely for u..

• 63. Glenn Helder  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:51 am

Ideally I would take Huntelaar and maybe Vincente or Robinho. I like Joaquín maybe Wenger could bring more out of his game but again not sure he would settle.

Relistically I wouldn’t mind McCarthy I think he is a decent backup and one of the above.

• 64. AFIF  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:51 am

TO 58. JIMBO WHAT I MEANT THAT WE MUST BUY ONE FROM THOSE THREE DRENTHE , SNEIJDER OR QUARESMA INSTEAD REYES AND FREDDIE WE HAVE MONEY 12 MILLION EURO FROM REYES TRANSFER SO WHY WONT WE USE THEM TO BUY ONE PLAYER FROM THOSE I MENTIONED

• 65. Rumour Mill.  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:55 am

Sneijder is the only player mentioned so far that would suit Arsenals style of play - Quaresma - has been hyped up to be the best winger on the planet - and while he would certainly be a good addition (anyone that gives us extra quality is welcome) - I don’t see how he would revolutionize our team - if anything it will be the combined improvement of the current team more than a shiny new transfer that will see us improve on last season.

• 66. Ash  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:55 am

Walcott has looked good in early pre-season but once we started playing the big teams he looked like someone who is not ready to start yet. Eduardo looks an excellent signing but we need him more upfront. Our midfield is now Hleb Gilberto Cesc Eboue, I think Wenger will give it untill January and then buy if needed. We look a player away from becoming a great team but if Eboue and Hleb start scoring goals we can mount a challenge.

• 67. AFC  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:56 am

Why is everyone mentioning Quaresma, Drenthe, Riise, Aissati! Can someone send me a link to some factual proof that we maybe looking to sign these players, coz i aint seen any!

• 69. TopCat  |  August 6th, 2007 at 10:58 am

The team put out against Ajax played more 4-5-1 than it 4-4-2.

It may be because wenger looked at the Ajax game as good preparation for the Sparta game……

or it could mean he wants to play 4-5-1 in the prem this year.

sagna - toure - gallas - clichy

eboue - fab - gilberto - rosicky or hleb - ??? perhaps eduardo

RVP or eduardo if eduardo not used on left side midfield.

There is NO arsenal news. Nada. I can only hope that that means Arsene, true to his form, is arrainging the transfer coups of a lifetime.

I dreamt last night that Arsenal.com presented pictures of Kaka and Wenger - that we had activated some huge release clause and THAT was why we hadn’t spent so much over the years. It was all for Kaka. It made sense. But I checked this morning and it wasn’t true. Sad times.

I wonder who Wenger is going to pull out of his arse? Are we going to have to wait until August 31st?

Boo Hoo.

Have anyone thought about this? henry left for 16m. We bought sagna ,de silva and the keeper and young defender.these transfers was worth henry sale.since then freddy and reyes left , maybe 10m for both of them. and we stil even havent touched our transfer budget . so we should have quite alot of money left since we have sold 2 buy so far

• 81. Romford Pele  |  August 6th, 2007 at 11:29 am

cannot wait to see how Vela does in la Liga this season - now we’ll get to see just how good he is. hoo hoo

who needs to spend 20 mil on nani and anderson when we get them 3 years earlier for 2 mil?

• 82. ClockendJim  |  August 6th, 2007 at 11:34 am

I was very encouraged in the manner we stood up to extreme provocation from Ajax - a friendly !!??
I believe that Henry was a negative influence over the last year and we now look much more of a unit, prepared to fight for each other. This was emphasised by the great effort put in by Flamini - if he continues like this, then I feel there is a real part for him to play at Arsenal.
Eduardo De Silva looks dynamite. I hope he gets the chance to develop a working relationship with Van Persie and then I think we will start converting more of all those chances our lovely approach football creates.
People are saying don’t read too much into the Charity Shield match, but I think both teams desperately wanted to beat the other one. Whereas I think there is more to come from United and they should win the PL again, I was not convinced by Chelsea. Without Drogba and his goals, they would have struggled last season (and we would have won the Carling Cup). They definitely looked toothless to me and if Drogba and Terry remain absent for a while then they may not get off to the start they would want.
What with Liverpool looking poor in Holland, I am at lot more optomistic for 2007/8, with at least 2nd a real possibility.

We’re the North Bank, We’re the North Bank, We’re the North Bank Highbury…..

I think one of the most positive things to take from Henry’s departure is that there is no shadow over the rest of the team - you can point to the fact that we have no super super super world class players - but you are only as good as your last game and Henry’s last game was half a year ago!

Move on - we have a great core of players who are displaying a hunger and fight that seemed absence for a few years - and that is not just a co-incidence.

Henry - loved you to death fella - but this is the new era - this is RVP and Fabregas’ team now.

True - nothing is won in pre season friendlies - and lets see how we are doing as a team come Nov/Dec - but I feel the biggest reason for fans to be negitive is when they feel the team is not up for it - and that cant be said so far of the team this season - so a lot of positives to take.

• 84. Glenn Helder  |  August 6th, 2007 at 11:45 am

We’re gonna be lighweight if RVP gets a knock though … have to stay optimistic though - he’ll score 25+ and stay fit and we’ll get to the CL Final. Roll on Saturday

• 85. TeamSpirit  |  August 6th, 2007 at 11:46 am

re malouda.

Its always best to wait for arsena.com to confirm transfers.

Papers will always talk and quote and maybe AW was actually interested, but as has been stated, it takes 3 parties to conclude a deal.

• 86. TeamSpirit  |  August 6th, 2007 at 11:47 am

• 87. TopCat.  |  August 6th, 2007 at 11:49 am

GH - Something Ive been saying a while now.

We have a great starting 11

But not a great squad - if RVP is out for 2 months or more then we may struggle to score.

But Eduardo does look very sharp and links well with the team - he is still unproven - but hardly the lump of shit that so many doom mongers would have us believe.

• 88. TeamSpirit  |  August 6th, 2007 at 11:52 am

I am also encouraged by the reports that we survived the physical battle.
I am gladour team spirit is picking up big time… It is the famous arsenal team spirit that I took my name from…

• 89. billy  |  August 6th, 2007 at 11:58 am

Aaaaaaaaaalll that is neede as an addition to arsenal squad is Quaresma, and all will be done with the sort of Tevez, Torres Nani and so on, not to forget Babel.

• 90. TeamSpirit  |  August 6th, 2007 at 11:58 am

87. You know the doom mongers will rather be sad than happy…

• 91. TeamSpirit  |  August 6th, 2007 at 11:59 am

89. SO what do we do, go and get these perosn from their respective clubs?

In the end, you can only play 11 players you know

• 92. Glenn Helder  |  August 6th, 2007 at 11:59 am

TC definitely agree - I think a 5 man midfield makes use of our strongest players. I like Hleb behind the frontman - think he will link play well.

Do you think we can successfully use this formation on the Prem or will revert to 4-4-2 ?

• 93. Romford Pele  |  August 6th, 2007 at 12:01 pm

can’t see AW playing 4-5-1 at home in the premiership, even the fluid 4-5-1 we play

• 94. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 12:01 pm

people seem to rate bendtner really highly why!?!?

hailed as the big strong fella that we have lacked for a while. but i just cant get excited by him, it’s not just his lazyness that’s getting to me but that awful attitude. we go on about the great team spirit in our squad and i dont see that same cohesiveness with him. he seems like an arrogant prick!!? are we gonna rely on him and Eduardo and Ade if RVP goes out. i think we maybe a bit buggered… thoughts?!

• 95. Romford Pele  |  August 6th, 2007 at 12:04 pm

94 watch the interviews with him on Arsenal TVonline - he’s confident in his own ability, as he needs to be, but he doesnt come across as arrogant.

he needs to be integrated slowly over the course of the season - but I think he’s capable of scoring a few goals

There is a school of thought that says Wenger has looked at his team this year and said - we will never be the same “move the ball from defense to attack in 3 moves in 7 seconds” team that we were previously - and we may not score the abundance of goals we scored previously - so the other option is to tighten up defensively.

Now - I know many will scoff at that suggestion and point to the defensive problems we have.

But think of it this way - so far in the pre season friendlies, there has been 6 defenders in the starting line up (4 at the back and the 2 wingers) - either traore or eboue have been used in midfield - and in another game clichy played left mid, with traore behind him.

4-5-1 allows greater defensive protection, but also results in less sweeping attacking moves - which is in line with the above school of thought.

Even in a 4-4-2 - I think we will be less offensive and will try to win games by conceding less as opposed to simply outscoring the opposition.

• 104. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 12:10 pm

i guess it’s early days to tell whether he is a self centred dane, but he seems like he could rate himself so highly that he would be a nob about it- - the danish anelka? i hope im wrong though.

and i hope we can intergrate him slowly, ie - we dont suffer any injuries and are forced to throw him in early. although thinking about it, even if we lose RVP then we could put helb up front as support striker and we might be able to cope. ahh here’s to dreaming…

• 105. Ruralgoon  |  August 6th, 2007 at 12:13 pm

TeamSpirit; as delegated liverpool watcher for the site I would like to say that while ‘pool had some good movements in this tournament, last night’s game was the first that had ANY competitiveness about it… and it showed. They were slow on the uptake, the previous fluidity shown in the asia cup vanished, and Benitez’ substitutions had everyone scratching their heads… fernando torres playing as a right winger?! The one player that looked sharp was the ‘keeper; if reina gets injured, I believe they will be sunk.

• 106. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 12:17 pm

TC i cant agree with that school of thought. the whole ‘wenger has gone defensive’ idea. i think the 2 ‘defenders’ in midfield are purely because we dont have many decent true wingers to replace the one’s we have lost.

and i cant help but point out that wenger has always trained and coached his wing backs to be good going forward, they are hardly traditional defensively-minded full backs. so either way i think usually we play with just the 2 in defence. the 2 CB’s.

• 113. Glenn Helder  |  August 6th, 2007 at 12:39 pm

TC I agree that Eboue / Sagna will give us more defensive strength but Wenger’s love of pace / technique means that we can still break quickly from defence. The problem is that we need the forwards to get up field quicker and get into goalscoring positions and actually finish. I think Eduardo and Bendtner have an eye for goal and will give us more productivity if we play 4-4-2 but Rosicky and Hleb need to get up there and have a crack. I expect Rosicky to weigh in with more goals this season if ole glass ankles stays fit. We just need a greater contribution from him Hleb, Eboue and Fab. Hopefully Gilb will weigh in and we’ll produce from corners but I share the same concern about productivity.

For what it’s worth I like Bendtner he knows how to stick the ball inthe back of the net as shown from his pre season finish from a difficult angle

• 114. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 12:45 pm

i think spurs will do quite well this season. not to the extent that im worried but last season they had an awful starts. surely that cant happen twice?! and also im glad that tottenham play attacking football and have a leaky defence, really does make me think of them as our little sisters.

• 119. Garfield  |  August 6th, 2007 at 12:58 pm

I see the rosy optimism has kicked in then eh? The only sensible comment I have read so far came from Jimbo. In summary, he has said that beyond the front 2, there are simply not enough goals coming from midfield. If RVP and Dudu do not score the goals then who is going to? United won the league with people chipping in from Carrick to Scholes. Oh yeah. And that winger guy called Ronaldo who scored sthg like 17 league goals. Pires used to do that regular until Arsene decided he’d let him go gratis and stick a central midfielder on the wing instead. The team has shown some positives, yes but some peeps really need to get a grip. This is PRE-SEASON we are talking about. If you honestly think that AW and Arsenal can get anything out of this lesson without a top-class addition to the wings and even possibly a striker then…..

———————————————–Not to piss on your parade TopCat but what ’school of thought’ would that be? The mental one? Have you SEEN our defence lately? And when Kolo goes off to ACN then the shit will really hit the fan….I really do not see anything to look forward to in this new season, sorry. I do not partake in the jubilant celebrations over the possibility of coming 4th again, maybe even third. I want Arsenal to WIN and finish first. We ain’t done it in nearly 4 years now and so it would be nice. Yet again though, the standards are very low at Arse these days. Therefore I’m sure many peeps will be ecstatic with another 4th place finish and a 20+pts eficit…

• 123. Romford Pele  |  August 6th, 2007 at 1:09 pm

“Quaresma - has been hyped up to be the best winger on the planet ”

Ok, I know people seem to get lost in this bubble that it the gunnerblog comments section but Quaresma isn’t really Ronaldo or Messi now is he, he’s just a decent young winger who could be amazing with the same sort of price tag attached to all good wingers in the market.

Talking of Messi though, he is way better than Kaka, why does everyone think the Brazilian is the best in the world. Messi shits on him, in my opinion.

Can we fucking sign someone already? It’s bad enough I’m not feeling well and can’t go out in the sun and that there is bugger all on the tele, but all you do is discuss Chelsea? Well fuck that. But then here is my opinion ;) :Without Drogba and Terry? They will be only as good as Liverpool and Arsenal. And dare I say it, Spurs.

This is their considered view…

1/ Man Utd
2/ Chelsea
3/ Liverpool
4/ Spurs
5/ Arsenal

Cheeky twats!

• 132. Bergkamp  |  August 6th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

Now I am really looking forward to this season with the players we’ve got plus hopefully a few others but tonight I couldn’t help but think what might have been…

Lehmann
Sagna—Toure—Gallas—Clichy
Eboue–Gilberto–Cesc—Rosicky/NEW LEFT WINGER
RvP
Henry

Yes I know Henry was turning into someone with waay too much of an ego but I feel this team could have torn the league a new one, with Dudu, Hleb, Adebayour, Diaby of the bench.

I feel dirty putting Henry in an Arsenal lineup right now though. I can’t help but feel the team is a better unit without him but stil he was a class player.

• 133. DeiseGooner  |  August 6th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

It really is gonna be sweet to see the look on the spuds faces come the end of the season. They are really bigging up this season as the season they join the big boys. It will be so funny when they yet again realize the folly of their optimism

• 134. Wayne Kerr  |  August 6th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

It seems from reading the posts on this and other blogs that the back 5 is sorted and will be the preferred starting line up.
Obviously Bert will play together with Cesc.
I am rather surprised that Eboue is in nearly everybody’s starting line up as well. He’s only played RMF a couple of times in friendly s and although looks quite good I don’t think you can give him an automatic place as seems to be the case.
Seems odd to me.

Bill gates doesnt say “not hit our targets for this year, dont worry, remember when we used to work out of a garage”. Bitter and twisted: some good points but b4 george graham came arsenal we no bigger a club that spurs. Of course we have to look ahead and be positive about the future but it just seems to me that there are a lot of “new-comers” on these sites who feel sorry for themselvs if arsenal dont win the league every season. It is not out divine footballing right to be champions every year and it was only really Wenger who created this expectation. The years b4 he came we were a mid table club and so Wenger deserves our patience. He creasted some wonderful teams at arsenal over the last 10 years but we arent as big a club in terms of support or history as liverpool or man utd and i think people forget this.

Brian Talbot Free Kick King - I am often named as the most rosiest of rose tints - but I like most only ask for one thing - to be competitive.

We recognise that we may not win the league, no one has a devine right to expect that - but we want to finish no more than 6-9 points off the leaders at worst - of course to win the league would be the aim, but lets be realistic - 1st may not be possible, but being competitive is.

• 156. Brian Talbot Free Kick King  |  August 6th, 2007 at 2:23 pm

TC: Absolutely agree with you, and this year i’d say that realistically we have a chance at finishing 2nd….it would require our boys to be far more consitant than last year and for utd or chelsea to have a month or so of fucked-upped-ness but you never know. I would be severly astounded if arsenal won the league this year…..but i am feeling optimisitic. Certainly helps us to be underrated goining into the season and i still have almost total respect for Wenger……i cant remember going inot a season with so much excitment, not because i think we will win everything but because we are such an unknown quantity this year!!

Here’s a thought: why not hijack everton’s move for leighton baines right now and play with both him and clichy on the left flank? He would cost 6m, and honestly i’d think he’d prefer us over everton (Champion’s League over Uefa Cup). We’d be defensively stable on the left side, with 2 natural left footers providing natural width. And Baines packs a hell of a shot remember the goal against Man U last year? Though their final ball may be a bit of a suspect.

I live in London and had the choice out of Arsenal and Chelsea as to who to support (parental ties/where i live etc) and i madly chose Arsenal. i’ve always had a soft spot for the way The arsenal play, their difference in their style, they’re loyalty to a manager and the fact that they are not funded by corrupt foreigners. they are most definately corrupt englishmen.

i really dont care if we win the prem or not, like TC, i think being competitive is what makes it fun. i love our underdog status in the top 4, and i find the stories in the papers about us being in a downward spiral hilarious. chelsea will suffer the worst during the african cup nations and combined with the money flooding into newcastle, spurs, villa and city. our own beautiful inconsistency, Rafa’s tinkering and united’s dependance on ronaldo means this next year should be tighter at the top than ever before. roll on the good times. the EPL will really start to prove its worth as the best league in the world! Up the guns!

Top post 146. I wish some had sense to see reality like that…

• 171. Garfield  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:01 pm

Romford-P: Drenthe ran the show vs Liverpool. Scored a goal, ran them ragged and won a penalty. So he’ll end up at Chelski then….

P.S TopCat: finishing 9 pts off after 3 years of abject dross is not good enough. Even 6 pts is not. Anything less than finishing within 4-5 pts of the leaders will be another year of spectacular incompetence.

• 172. david  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:02 pm

he is a chat shit man and he keeps on lieing 2 us. what the fuck is wrong with him. why have somany kids in the team. its all about money hes buys kids so he can pay low money 2 the. that fuck face has 2 go.

Garfield - I think you took me too literally - I was trying to say that in general most fans would be satisfied so long as we make a challenge - if we did that, but faded away with a few games to go and finished 2nd 6 points behind the leaders I wouldnt call that a disaster. - would you?

Or are you firm that anything more than 5 points behind the leaders means Wenger should be sacked?

• 180. david  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:07 pm

I think the PL should change the rules that all teams must break even on their published accounts (or variation of same) or they are deducted points the following season.
It would need more thought than this I know but it can’t be good for the game (and the clubs themselves) that Chelski, ManUsa and Pool can spend so much. If they can balance the books no problem.

• 194. Take That  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

• 195. gazzap  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

the trouble with the success we had since 1998 is that we get shed loads of hanger on glory hunters. OK so you might not be so low to change your allegiance to another team, but why the constant digs at the way Wenger works and the constant digs at our own players? for Gods sake you are meant to be supporters.
Other teams supporters support their team no matter where they are going to finish, but there are numbers of Arsenal, Chelsea and Man u fans who think unless they are buying several multi million players every summer, who are rated by the media, then the club is shit.
I cant stand your stinking attitude and I know you wont sod off and support someone else, but please refrain from spouting your negative shit all over the internet. you give arsenal fans a bad name. I dont give a damn what Man U and chelsea fans do and I expect that attitude from their fans because lets face it thats how they do run their club. But we dont. we are the Arsenal. Please respect The Arsenal.

• 196. tom  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:27 pm

Bloggie

Think he has to get regular 1st team football the guy is adecent striker and seems to be going backwards. Better to be in another team or abroad playing every week.

Whatever happened to Phil Ifil he looked pretty useful

Oh yeah and sack Wenger, we’ll get relegated, we’re worse than Derby and will struggle to win a match. We have no good players and Wenger only buys 5 year olds. In fact the average age of your 1st team on Saturday will be 12. Jeez why bother supporting the club - we all liketo discuss the problems and how we thing they can be fixed but what’s the point in slating the team we love constantly to such a degree ?

I think 99% of fans are hoping Wenger will sign on for many more years to come.

• 204. Gunner8  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

TC great post, cheers… …stuck traveling and missed the match

what’s your favorite spot in the Dam? Grey Area, Dutch Flowers, the Dampkring? or are you more of a Bulldog, Grasshopper?

I think Feyenord look pretty mighty

• 205. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:34 pm

wenger revolutionised the prem with coaching techniques and attacking flair. now ur telling him to fuck off because he doesnt win enough, ur condemning the prem to a boring league full of teams that play like chelsea. arsenal’s techniques and style has probably done more to improve the quality of the UKs youngsters than the pool. imagibe being a liverpool fan - they havent won the prem in years and they’re trying to win it playing dull. would u honestly prefer us to take that same root? we would lose our reputation for playing the most beautiful game and tbh we aren’t as ineffectual as some make us sound. we’re the third most popular team in the world (according to wikipedia!) we won that support by playing so beautifully!!! long may it live. its hardly like we are scrapped for cash…

• 209. Glenn Helder  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:40 pm

Fair play Bloggie just though he mit be a bit more ambitious than going for another season of benchwarming.

You must be screwing the you didn’t off load Ghaly and Mido though - the season’s spending would be nicely balanced if you got rid of those jokers.

Do you reckon Lennon is up to the job then. My spud mate reckons he has no end product but he has impressed when I have seen him although i’d go with a season ticket holders view i’d be interested to see what you think and what of Ifil ??!!

• 210. Clyde  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

To all sensible posters on the forum, i agree Wenger either should’ve gone or he must sign now. The worst thing will be playing out the season knowing he intends to leave at the end. The uncertainty will be a disaster. Once you know your leader is going, everyone underneath starts to lose faith. its the same in any organisation, for an easy example, look at how weak Labour were with Tony Blair hanging on to the end. The certainty the whole club will feel if he signs on for more years will be an immense fillip…and scrap these end of season get out clauses too.

• 211. *_Respects Highbury  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

Morning All,

I was a great fan of Wenger. But not anymore. Iam sure an English manager will do a better job than him now. Fuck Off to Barca wenger. Iam sure it was his plan while selling henry cheap

Ta…

• 212. Glenn Helder  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

• 213. Wayne Kerr  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

No Gooner with any sense would want Wenger to go.

• 214. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

clyde - i think its pretty obvious that wenger is going to stay. where exactly do you see him going?

but i agree that he has been a bit of a dick in not signing a new one, it gives off a bad impression. the uncertainty at the start of the summer was awful. i think wenger loves to tease the media and unfortunately we hear our news from them.

respects highbury - which english manager would u have at arsenal? i cant think of any.

• 215. Nick  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

214… not sure I can think of any manager other the Arsene I would rather have at Arsenal. May be Rude but that’s about it.

• 216. Garfield  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

TopCat I see what you mean. Not literally, but finishing 6 pts off the leaders in the end, so long as we were in it right until the penultimate day would be ok I guess. But you ain’t never see me say AW should get sacked otherwise. BUT if he has another season like last year then perhaps the decision won’t even be up to him anymore. Not like some of these cunts on the board. And btw. Is it half-term? ron can you please stop being an imposter and posting under other peeps’ ID.s like 50 Cent…Respects…etc? Fuck me. Gilbertoilver when are the new comments coming along? Hopefully we can filter out all the wankers like ron etc….and get the quality bloggers back, i.e. the ones who’ve all fucked off like Respects, Amos, Little.. because of the 80% majority of wankbags on here such as e.g. ron, Anil Nair.

Time to get some respectability back to the blog.

• 217. Clyde  |  August 6th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

Well, if he left, cos of Dein and not being as successful as before, he knows he couldn’t build the same way he has here for 10 odd years. Maybe he’d go for a more quick fix project, Barca or Bayern or a national team (England post McClaren?)would be easier. It’s not out of the question, he’s got to leave some time.

• 218. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:00 pm

215 exactly, but out of all the english managers, i like coppell the most. he doesnt seem like he has the pedigree to attract or win the immediate respect of top players though. i was impressed with the manager of PSG. le guen(??)

• 219. FACT  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

Basically, Clichy doesn’t score and doesn’t produce assists and his game looks like football by numbers. So Clichy needed that assist. He really needed that assist. In truth, it was long overdue. Clichy needs another assist soon.

• 220. FACT  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

On occasion Arsenal have delivered on that promise, just not with any consistency. One of the worst combinations for newspaper readers in recent years has been an Arsenal-inclined reporter writing about one of those occasions when everything has clicked. Several hundred words on a golden future, with little regard to the way the bad old days have always been just around the corner.
There was a degree of fortune in the claiming of fourth place in 2006. There was some last season, because Arsenal contributed not too much to Spurs’ failure to cope with their added cup burden and to the way Bolton faded after Christmas.
The big four do dominate the top of the salary list, but by no means do they spend the same amounts. According to the accountants Deloitte, Arsenal paid salaries totalling £82m in 2005-06, just three million less than Manchester United (Chelsea were top with £114m). Liverpool spent “just” £68m. Spurs were so close to pipping Arsenal for fourth with a salary bill (£40m) slight under half the size of their neighbours’. Worse, Deloitte estimate that last season Arsenal would have outspent Man Utd by close to £10m, to finish nowhere near them.

This actually made me chuckle.
I think we all know Wenger is going to sign on. He will wait till the season starts, maybe at a time the team needs a boost and the press don’t ask him that week.
Arsenal have always had a fantastic youth system as far back as I remember, even under Wenger - even Vieira and Petit were bought as little more than youth team players, the Cesc’s of their day. I think the people that complain about the kids really are glory hunters we gained since Wenger joined who assumed instant and lasting success and didn’t think about tradition (such as using our youth academy more so than spending billions).
I want our team to be still competing by April and a cup. I think that is a far and honest goal. Next season, I want another Premiership title.

• 224. Blog Head  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:09 pm

Glen Helder,

Mido and Ghaly, what a fucking waste of space. Whats funny is that we might actually make a profit on them due to the crazy prices nowadays. Fairplay to Bruce for telling ghaly to fuck off.

lennon is quality but he got a bit tired I think. Has had a long rest now so should be fresh again.

Fuck knows what happened to ifil, Everyone I know could see the potential but we kept loaning him out. He must be an arrogant / disruptive little bastard

• 225. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

‘fact’ man - can you explain the whole arsenal spent more than man utd by 10 mil thing. that goes against everything ive heard about arsenal. and how have we got such a high wage bill? anyone know roughly what we’re paying for our players, wasnt freddie and henry on 70k and 100k respectively? so thats 9 million from our wages already.

• 226. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Maybe he’d go for a more quick fix project, Barca or Bayern or a national team (England post McClaren?)would be easier. It’s not out of the question, he’s got to leave some time.
————–
Of all outcomes, I see this being the least likely. If Arsene leaves it will be to some obscure African nation to help growth of football out there or to a rubbish French team he can see as a long term Football Manager style attempt at taking them from being rubbish to taking Lyon’s spot.

Our wage bill will be significantly lower FACT without Henry and Freddie but it doesn’t matter that we spent more on wages than Spurs or Liverpool, we make revenues (from match day alone) that must be double what Tottenham make. Add in having like twice the fanbase, that shouldn’t matter. We all know this is a team for (hopefully the immediate) future and it was never, unfourtunatly, going to compete with Chelsea or United.

I did think about my prediction for the table earlier and it comes out looking something like this:
1. United
2. Chelsea
3. Arsenal
4. Spurs
5. Liverpool

11. Newcastle
12. City
13. West Ham (spending money doesn’t guarantee success)

17. Birmingham
18. Sunderland
19. Wigan
20. Derby

• 227. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

i saw west ham at the weekend against roma and i have to say i think freddie likes his new role - he was their star man, all the good play went through him. shows how dispirited he was a the arse. that or the fact that lee bowyer and etherington make him look good again. haha

• 228. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

Bloggie: As a Spurs fan, how do you realistically see your team doing next season? And what do you think about the team STILL not sorting the position they (and Arsenal) needed to sort most on the left wing?

• 229. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

sorry my point was that i think west ham will do better than 13th.

• 230. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

And a third question: Do you think there is much in Ghaly saying that Tottenham don’t run in training and all that? It would seem quite worrying if there was truth in his arrogance. (Or awesome for us gooners.)

• 231. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

purely because of freddie

• 232. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:22 pm

UpMyAntics: Fair enough. But personally, adding Bellemy and Parker to a team that just seems uninterested in everything but a paycheck seems unbelievably stupid to me. Faubert (in January), Ashton and Ljungberg could turn it around, but it is still essentially a team that was to go down (remember Tevez has gone) and didn’t seem to care.

• 233. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

230 - wasn’t that the same fear that adams and co had with wenger too?!

• 234. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

ur probably right, but i still love freddie and i hope he can turn it around for them. the more london teams the less arsenal have to travel up north!!! woohooo!

• 235. Blog Head  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

Samuel,

I think we will win a cup, have a good run in all the cups, and I think we’ll finish Fifth unless you or liverpool have a terrible start.

About Left mid, theres only a few great left sided players around and they’ll go where the mega bucks are first, wouldn’t you?.

I dont remember you lot ever having a left-footed winger when you won the double, wenger used Cole overlapping which I think Jols got planned for Bale

• 236. Blog Head  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

Samuel,

Ghaly is full of shit, Fitness is the main thing a footbaler needs.

I think in there country there big stars and find it hard being somewhere where no-one gives a shit.

• 237. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

You think Bale is ready to be a first choice left back? To me he seems like Traore, great as a back-up and will be world class given a few years and like 20 games a season. But then I guess you don’t have anyone better than him…

• 238. Blog Head  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

Samuel, exactly

• 239. David A  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

I hate to say it but fat Sam is the best thing Newcastle have done in years. I think they will prob finish higher than 11th. His teams play shit football but he is very forward thinking in his management style. Like nutrition, scouting e.t.c.
Watch Bolton freefall under Sammy Lee.
Dont think Sunderland or Liverpool will be that low either.
Spurs will continue to be nearly men.
Who knows? Just my opinion

• 240. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:33 pm

Yeah, it just seems strange that he implied spurs were above running. It wouldn’t surprise me if a player earning 25 grand a week who comes from a rubbish country sees themselves a ronaldinho though, the premiership seems set to make arrogant cunts out of people that aren’t good enough to be.

• 241. Respect Eduardo  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

1) Manchester
2)Arsenal

4) Liverpool
5) Newcastle
6) Spurs

• 242. Blog Head  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

• 243. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

David A: Fair enough. I’m purely going on my own speculation. Just certain things: Spending 5m on each Michael Chopra and Kieran Richardson as if they are the answer to premiership success seems to be the same misguided transfer activity every newly promoted team does before they go back down; Torres and Babel look like they won’t do anything but be a bit rubbish as opposed to me being excited to Kuyt in the premiership last season; Big Sam is already making excuses for failure and complaining about not having enough money - well maybe he shouldn’t have wasted it on wank like Joey Barton then.

• 244. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:41 pm

Why do most people think that we can’t win the Premiership this season?

I know it will be tough, and the standard has improved but we are the Arsenal and Wenger has done it before!

No reason we can’t get off to a flying start and win out first 4 games against Fulham (h), Blackburn (a) Man City (h) and Portsmouth (h).

We should be top of the table by then and start to believe in ourselves a bit more.

A tricky away tie vs the Scum follows and let’s be honest they are well overdue to beat us.

Whatever the result at Shite Hart Lane we will still more than likely be in the top 2 or 3.

The next game are Derby (h), West Ham (a), Sunderland (h)and Bolton (h). No reason why we can’t be several points clear at the top at the end of those games and building some momentum.

That’s how ManU did it last year – they just kept going and believed in themselves – we can do the same!

We have no idea about the injuries to come to us or our rivals – but I think we are perhaps due for a less injury prone season.

All in all I seriously think we can challenge for the title this season – and I believe Wenger does too.

All you wingers can shoot me down – I don’t care – ‘cause love the Arsenal and believe in my team!

• 248. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:46 pm

i honestly dont think the pool will be a big flop either, as long as rafa isnt such a tinkerer, i mean i was pretty excited at the idea that babel was going to join us. i wonder what wenger saw (or didnt see) in him to not bother going for him?

infact lets pile on the pressure on liverpool - they should easily win the league, they have spent alot, a core of brits, how can they fail. if they dont come second this term i would be royally fucked off. hahaha i dont reckon they can handle the pressure. i still dont see them scoring much!!!

• 249. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:47 pm

A tricky away tie vs the Scum follows and let’s be honest they are well overdue to beat us.

I love everything you say except for this tosh. You silly, silly man. Sorry, but my first ambition going into any season is the destruction of Tottenham Hotspurs. The title comes second.

• 250. Respect Eduardo  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:49 pm

Well said Fletch, if we can get on a good run early on and top the league, the confidence level will be high.
AND usually teams on top of the league seems to have the luck of winning tight games thru a fluke goal or deflected shots.

• 251. Fletch  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:50 pm

Samuel
I hate Spurs as much as you mate, and I hope our unbeaten run against them goes on for decades - all I’m saying that 3 points won’t be very easy to get at their place.

• 252. David A  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:50 pm

Yeah. Basically the league is very hard to predict this year.
As far as i know Roy Keane is very much into playing football the right way(on the ground). Not sure if he has the players though.
Reckon Wigan are in big trouble this year.

• 253. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:51 pm

And also, if Spurs beat us so early into the season, the media will really go with THE SKY IS FALLING malark. Thierry leaving will be nothing compared.

UpMyAntics: He was a bit rubbish at the u20s I thought and that was in quite a fast, attacking team. Maybe he may be well sorted at Pool, Ajax also seem a slow, defensive team. But I just don’t think he would have added much to us, this season at least.

• 254. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

247 haha your the kind of rose tinted brigade that piss off so many ppl on this blog. i personally love it. i reckon blackburn away will be tricky. i think mark hughes learnt his lesson about trying to actually play football against us!

• 255. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

I think every person in the history of the world knows Derby and Wigan are certain to go down. Selling Baines is just about as stupid as you can get, he is their only decent player.

• 256. Fletch  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

Come to think of it when was the last time Spurs beat us in any competition? 8 years, 10 I can’t remember.

• 257. Word -is-Bond  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

We need one more player Arsene….just one more

Why are you torturing us!? Just sign a f-cking player already!!

• 258. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

I think we saw from the FA Cup that Hughes learnt his lesson but with Cruz/McCarthy, he could be misguided enough to think his team is good enough to try playing us properly.
I don’t think it’s absurd that we could win the season, even more so if we start well. It can happen, but it won’t be easy. I think everyone concerned is thinking this season will be as close as Spain was last season.

• 259. Fletch  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:56 pm

UpMyAntics
How can supporting the team and feeling optimistic piss people off?
You must leave a miserable life.

• 260. Fletch  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

live = leave

• 261. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

257 Big Daddy Kane - Yeah, I was sure it would be today. As I was sure it would have happened Friday. So I’m sure it will happen tomorrow. If we don’t sign anyone by Friday, I may cry.

• 262. Clyde  |  August 6th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

Fletch is right. We can get a really good start with the fixtures we have, and confidence will start to grow. I think the title is stretching it, but we can get top 3. And yeah, i reckon even AW will sign another player before the window shuts.

• 263. Word -is-Bond  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:00 pm

Samuel - lol, I just don’t understand why Arsene is obsessed with a bare-bones squad.

If we add a winger, then instantly the squad looks more strengthened. Why is Arsene pretending otherwise….?

Its really annoying and I really really hope he’s just bluffing for the cameras

• 264. mr serge  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:07 pm

samuel spurs have not beaten us for 7 seasons they won’t do it this season either i am not impressed with their buys

• 265. Blog Head  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

mr serge, we’ll find out soon enough wont we

• 266. Fletch  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:11 pm

I fucking can’t wait for it all to start!
Been a boring 3 months without football.
Just a few more days to go and it starts thick and fast.
Whaa hoo

• 267. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:14 pm

Big Daddy Kane: I don’t think he is, when he said that he had lots of players the other day, it was a bunch of CMs. It was basically him saying “I’m buying someone sure, but not Diarra.”

• 268. Samuel  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Bloggie: I think your team would be a lot better next season sure but able to beat Arsenal? Really?

• 269. Gunner8  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:32 pm

FACT …erm did Clichy not provide the assist for RVP on Saturday, hmmm I think he did…TWAT

• 270. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

259 fletch mate, i was commending your optimism! dont sound so pissed!! it doesnt piss me off, its the moaners that get my back up. i reckon if we get out of the blocks fast then we should be alright. we have had a pretty tough pre-season to get us up to speed and fitness.

in fact, would the relatively tough preseason undermine us in the long term, ie we would suffer from fatigue in the latter stages of the season and be undone at the end? thoughts?!

• 271. MrGun  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:37 pm

your all a pack of cunts really, we’ve no chance of winning the league and wengers the biggest cunt of the lot of yous. time for the long nosed cunt to piss off

• 272. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

i hope all this new money in the prem makes managers realise that they dont have to play defensively? or at least give them the chance to buy decent attacking flair.

alternatively though, the pressures of big financial backing are placed upon managers will actually force them to play safe and shut up shop. will they all do a mourinho?!

• 273. Glenn Helder  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:44 pm

Don’t worry folks I have good sources that confirm we are in the running to sign three top players. I don’t want to jeapodise the deals so am gonna keep it zipped for now….

Actually fuck it I reckon Weng has it sewn up - tomorrow we’re gonna reveal … wait for it …

Ade Akinbiyi, Massimo Taibi and Ali Dia

I’m all for it - any signing is a good signing

Up the arse !

• 274. Fletch  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:44 pm

UpMyAntics - sorry mate - re-read your post and took it the wrong way.
Yep - plenty of doom mongers on this site.
What’s the matter with them - cheer up for phucks sake!

• 275. Gunner8  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

erm Glen Helder… …that is as inspiring as erm Glen Helder, Jensen and Kowimya

in fact a mighty LOL

• 276. Gunner8  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:47 pm

still plenty of time for signing the mighty robbie savage… …come on Arsene you know it makes no sense

MGP, Drenthe, Robinho and Kaka show me the money

• 277. Gunner8  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:50 pm

I think Arsenal have the might to carry this one through so to all you doomongers out there fook off

btw I agree with *_Respects, well somewhat anyway… …I think AW is still great but what a DofF he would make… …we need a tactical genious to bring us to the next level English though pah! the best is Guus

• 278. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

no worries fletch. i dont get whats wrong with arse fans alot of the time though. if we went down to the championship how many would actually still support arsenal?
think of the effect the hammerettes had at the end of last season performances for West Ham. Maybe we need some hot chicks to dance around at half time. seriously though, the crowd had a massive impact for them, we should do the same. (no swear words allowed though, that would offend the children, the really rich, posh children)

• 279. Gunner8  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

it seems like all you fuckers have gone home already… …bastards I am waiting for my Eurostar and fucking bored the 15 glasses of Pastis have me rolling.

Top Cat are you Nicky F in disguise???

• 280. UpMyAntics  |  August 6th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

277, thats genius. players would stil want to stay and we would have a manager who had some tactics!! maybe thats all the problem about him signing a new contract…

or more simply we could try and start up a nice rumour and try and get our names into that classy red top ‘the sun’. gunner 8 are you game? i reckon we could do it.

• 281. MrGun  |  August 6th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

we aint sighning anyone and ill fuckin gaurantee that and you cunts that think we are need a short sharp kick up the fuckin arses to wake you the fuck up. this cunt wenger hasnt the ability to convince a top player to come cause they might ask questions which we all know this cunt wont answer so all we’ll get are kids that will keep their traps shut or lads that nobody else wants so fuck the lot of yous

• 282. Glenn Helder  |  August 6th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Gunner 8

Fear not the Grimster has also been keeping tabs on Marcelino, Moussa Saib and runour has it he is trying to persuade Jason Lee to come out of retirement so one way or another we will be leethal by Saturday.

Never fear Wenger and Grimster are here

My sources are reliable but don’t tell anyone in case someone else swoops in / nothing actually comes of it

Up my Antics… …don’t know but my future wife was on page 3 today!

Monsieur Gun, ummm I won’t tell you to think positive ’cause you are obviously someone who thinks of the verre as half-empty… …a bit like my hal-full pastis (hmmm re-fil, love the business class lounge… …which is also my point I have an economy ticket, but a smile and waving my huge cock at the girl at the door go a long way… …if I thought like you though I would be sitting outside like the rest of the chumps).

yes the sky is falling on our heads but our druid Arsene Wenger will get-us-a-fix this year with his magic potion… …RVP is Asterix, Toure is a svelte Obelix, Clichy is Fuliautomatix and Gallas as Unhygenix (I have heard he does not bathe), and finally Dudu as Dogmatix.

Come on the Arse and fuck off you Cunts!

oh and 295 and 297 are not me but my new handle should change all impersonators (unless gelbs is really fucking bored today)

hmm Arnold/Gelbs/Mr.Gun been here long?

Adieu

• 303. Jimbo  |  August 6th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

I’m finding it very hard to fathom why Wenger’s leaving his midfield so short on quality this year.

Through the middle, I think we’re in great shape, with Cesc and Berty, but on the flanks it’s not just numbers, but also quality that we’re short on.

Rosicky is an alright player, without enough end product, and knees made of finest crystal, Hleb is a great player, but doesn’t seem to live up to his potential on the right hand side and has been incredibly inconsistent. Same for Theo - can turn a game, or stink the place out. He’s got great potential, but he can’t play regularly. And Eboue’s just horrible - he might as well hit the ball with a golf club for all his end product.

We’re in ok shape, but I really think that by not signing a winger, Wenger’s missed a big opportunity to make a big improvement on his squad - which is a real shame. If we perform well next year, fourth is realistic - but higher than that is out of the question.

• 304. Blacks Are Red  |  August 6th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

A left sided player is a must, Wenger still seems to be in the market - so fingers crossed.

Watching Rosicky play left side is painful to watch.

ARSENAL MAKE A WORLD RECORD BID FOR NOBODY!

Nobody is 7yrs old , born in Nicarguan jungles ,suffering from dysentry and malnutrition, plays in various positions , wings , defensive midfield , and cf , nobody told some shit in his press conference but the translator was missing do we don’t know what he said , probably that he’s looking forward to solve wenger’s winger problem in 14yr

Here’s wishing nobody has a illistrious career at arsenal and nobody soon adapts from wings and becomes a world famous striker like titi , A TOAST TO NOBODY ,and may he get over his bowel problems.

UpMyAntics, welcome to the board (I haven’t seen you before). Your reasonable opinions and general optimism will surely earn you scorn and abuse form horribly miserable souls for whom winning (silverware as they call) is the only validation, and who live in continual anxiety that this team won’t be able to give it to them…don’t worry about. It’s them, not you

• 313. vlcgooner  |  August 6th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

i am crazy jen’s phycho bro , i’ll join arsenal on the last day of transfer , an out’n'out striker , prefer’s to go in to a phychotic rage and hit defenders with my killer left foot , also play on the wings and kick the lineman’s wee-wee when noone’s looking .

• 315. Jerry  |  August 6th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

IT’S ALL WELL AND GOOD SAYING WE NEED A PROPER WINGER TO COMPETE, BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE FUCKER GET’S THAT LONG TERM INJURY OUR MEDICAL TEAM SEEM SO GOOD AT DEVELOPING ? ALL THIS PULLING SOME POOR BASTARDS TEETH OUT TO CURE HIS GROIN STRAIN NONSENSE, WHAT SORT OF “CATWEASEL” MEDICINE IS THAT FOR FUCK SAKE?

IF ARSENE REALLY BELIEVES IN THIS SQUAD THEN MAYBE HE’LL BE MORE PATIENT WITH INJURED PLAYER’S INSTEAD OF RISKING THEM BACK EARLY.

Sorry about the capitals but had already got going and couldn’t be bothered to go back and start over.

all seriousness though, and i am a very serious guy, dont give a shit about the abuse some ppl dish out on this thing. im more than used to it: i have long greasy hair; glasses an inch thick; acne from head to toe; i caught my GF screwing my dad and then later my new BF; once whilst i turned to drugs i once woke up at white hart lane in nothing but an arsenal shirt with what appeared to be spurs abuse scawled all over me in marker pen - it turned out to be tatto. so im pretty untouchable now tbh. you could say i was thick skinned

Fear not fellow gooners from what i have seen so far its pretty much the same as last season,Manu will rely on Ronaldo again Liverpool nothing without Gerrard maybe Kuyt will come good for them too Chelsea will be exactly the same old grinders but less affective really think they have shot their bolt.As for us i see hunger and desire we have a good unit now still young but stronger i’m expecting a much better season i would be really disillusioned if we are out the title race by October again.

On a lighter note,i’m taking bets on the first Liverpool player to have his house broken into, any takers :0

Off to another blog - this one is full of tools.

By the way, what happened to going to another blog?

• 328. Well-endowed gooner  |  August 7th, 2007 at 1:28 am

Gilberto Silver

I’m off on my holidays today. If there’s no update tomorrow, assume that a) there’s no internet access in the hotel, or b) I never made it.
___________________________________

If Gilberto Silver is taken hostage by ETA, there’s a fair chance he won’t be able to update this blog. That’s a pretty scary thought. What happens to the blogs of the incapacitated or deceased? Do next of kin take up blogging responsibilities? Does it get put up for auction, with the highest biding gooner getting control of the site? Or does it stay permanently on Wordpress, a mute reminder of the fragility of the human condition and transience of life?

I don’t know, and it worries me.

There should definitely be some kind of succession policy with this blog. On Arseblog, arseblogger has a deputy in Tom, who fills in on holidays, sick days, hangovers etc. I think Gilberto Silver needs a Denilson or a Song as a back-up.

His brother is a Chelsea fan. The blog is fucked! Haha

well done WEG wot would we do without you

• 331. Well-endowed gooner  |  August 7th, 2007 at 3:00 am

I wouldn’t mind seeing gunnerblog with a Chelsea slant, to be honest. I mean, how bad could it be? We’ve already got the Gelblets screaming blue murder and calling everything in an Arsenal top a “cunt”. I imagine the first thing he’d do would be to post a large picture of Ashley Cole with a halo around his head and the words “Ashley Knows” doing slow rotations around his face. Kind of curious to see how it’d look.

#330 gooner, it’s always nice to be appreciated.

• 332. Well-endowed gooner  |  August 7th, 2007 at 3:01 am

Damn it. Should’ve posted this instead:

Witching hour gun!

From an Australian point of view, I’d like to add that Fulham’s signed young Adrian Leijer from Melbourne Victory. He’s a 21 year old(?) central defender and was named young player of the year last year. Good for him. He’s got the makings of a good player, and is viewed as a long-term replacment for Lucas Neill in the national side. It’s good, because if the Asian Cup was a sign of things to come, we’re in trouble.

I hope he does well against the Arse next week, I really do. Hopefully, he shuts down van Persie and Eduardo, scores from a corner, gets sent off for ripping off his shirt, and watches Fulham succumb 3-1 to the Arse from the bench.

• 334. *_Respects Highbury  |  August 7th, 2007 at 3:22 am

We will win League Cup this season. That is, if we play our first eleven in that competition. Anyway we got no chance in any other competetion with a team as thin as this and that wanker wenger at helm. So stop dreaming gooners

• 335. Bergkamp  |  August 7th, 2007 at 3:26 am

WEG Leijer’s got a way to go but he’s got the potential. Great to see the Australian lleague exporting talent. Dave Carney is at the Blades after interest from some EPL clubs and now Leijer. Good times.

Tbh though He is no where near a starter for Fulham atm.

• 336. Bergkamp  |  August 7th, 2007 at 3:26 am

• 337. Arsene Wenger  |  August 7th, 2007 at 3:32 am

I would just liké to announcé that the board have finaliséd déals for Kaka, Ronaldinho and a dog called B-I-N-G-O. Tres Bien! Look forward to seeing them next season. Right now they look a little jaded but hopefully they will soon settle in the squad.

SOLIDARITY is the key.

Au Revoir.

• 338. london minicab  |  August 7th, 2007 at 3:50 am

royston drenthe , is a man, any club in the country would love to have, let’s get him and loan him back, til january, when things would have settled for the young team

• 339. oranje  |  August 7th, 2007 at 3:57 am

if he gets sent off.. he wont be watching from the bench anymore.. the closest he can get to the field is by the monitor in the dressing room.. :D

• 340. Well-endowed gooner  |  August 7th, 2007 at 4:07 am

334. *_Respects Highbury - that can’t be the fabled Respects, can it? Hard to believe, it’s such a short post. Same cuntish opinions, though.

I’m curious to see how he’ll go in England. It’s hard to tell what standard the A-League is at. Very physical, not very technical. Wonder how he’ll go? Not a first teamer straight away, but I’d put money on him cracking Fulham’s first team by year’s end. It has put a bit fo a hole in Melbourne’s defense, though. I was looking forward to Lube and Leijer for a season.

Maybe Leijer will follow Ahmet Elrich into Fulham’s reserves hey WEG?

• 344. disco dave  |  August 7th, 2007 at 6:24 am

And don’t give it to Respects - his quality posts are much missed!

• 345. Well-endowed gooner  |  August 7th, 2007 at 6:28 am

343. disco dave - That would be one awesome reserves team, Disco. Although, Elrich has a lot of work to do before he can aspire to the Fulham Bs. Maybe they could recruit Paddy Kisnorbo as well. That’ll be hilarious.

• 346. Bergkamp  |  August 7th, 2007 at 6:56 am

Kisnorbo . How embarrassing. I wouldn’t let him near one of my teams in a hundred years.

Mark Milligan > Kisnorbo.

I’d never say that to his face (I only have big balls literally, not metaphorically), but when he started ranting, he’d go on a bit. Random things I disliked about him:

1) He repeated himself with a lot of examples.
2) He was kind of childish about things that a +20 year Arsneal supporter should be upset about (e.g. he threw a lot of hissy fits about managers lying about transfer, season prospects)
3) Would laugh at his own jokes (I hate people who use LOL).
4) And it took forever to scroll past his musings.

I must admit, he mellowed over time. And he’s a lot more knowledgable about football than me. But he did get on my nerves.

It was always interesting from a psychological point of view. Why was a dude like that would get riled about things like this are beyond me. And yeah, I’m aware that it’s poor form to bag a guy behind his back. But you’ve got to understand that I’m more dick than man.

• 348. Well-endowed gooner  |  August 7th, 2007 at 7:34 am

Actually, I shouldn’t have called him a cunt. Sorry RH, if you’re reading. That was rather cuntish of me.

Sorry to piss on your parade…but….

Royston Drenthe is set to take Feyenoord to the court of arbitration to secure himself a move to Real Madrid, according to reports in the Dutch media.

The in-demand forward has enlisted the help of lawyer Harro Knijff, who supported Ronald and Frank de Boer when they had a similar case against Ajax in 1998.

The 20-year-old has just signed a contract until 2011 with the Rotterdam club but is now eager to move to Spain.

“I can confirm that I am busy preparing the request for an arbitration case,” Knijff told Sportweek magazine.

Feyenoord are determined to hold onto their prize asset though, and earlier this year rejected a reported 12.5-million-euro bid from the Spanish champions.

But there is every chance Drenthe will go once a club meets Feyenoord’s undisclosed valuation.

“We regret that things are turning towards this,” director Peter Vogelzang told the club website.

“We have made our standpoint public a few times already and nothing has changed in that: Feyenoord doesn’t want to see Royston Drenthe go to another club.

“Our intention is to keep him at the club for at least one more year and if possible longer. We did not extend and renew his contract in April until the summer of 2011 for nothing.

“Feyenoord only wants to sell Drenthe if we get an offer that is as high as we think Royston Drenthe is worth to us.”

dum dum dum…another one bites the dust….

I know. We’ve been slipping ever since Gus Hiddink left. Graeme Arnold’s a good deputy, but he’s not ready for the big job. I would’ve liked to see the FFA give the job to Neeskins. I think the Dutch way of playing really fits in with the Australian mentality.

I’m glad Iraq won, though.

• 354. Bergkamp  |  August 7th, 2007 at 9:43 am

We could have had Neeskens but the FFA sat on their hands :x :(
He would have been ideal for the Asian Cup, unlike that muppet Arnold who’s only full manager experience was with the Northern Spirit lol
