Lazio 1 - 2 Arsenal: Let’s have a proper Captain
0 guns August 3rd, 2007
It’s getting hard to feel negative this Summer, even sat here in my somewhat gloomy office. After beating PSG, Inter Milan, and now Lazio in the space of a week, this has to go down as a pretty successful summer so far. Admittedly, they’re only friendlies, but our strikers are scoring goals against top European defences. Just imagine what they’ll do to Northern Ireland Fulham.
We fielded a “Carling Cup Team”, with a stronger side expected to face Ajax on Saturday night. Philippe Senderos was skipper, ahead of rumoured Vice-captain Cesc Fabregas. I have to say, I’m not entirely happy with the armband being shunted around the way it is. Last season, Almunia would have been captain over Senderos, yet now that pecking order has been reversed. We’ve seen both Gallas and Toure wear it on seperate occasions, and Lukasz Fabianski wore it against Barnet within 10 minutes of his debut. Granted, it’s only pre-season, and it’s clear Arsene is attempting to share responsibility throughout the squad, but I find it ridiculous that we might start the season without officially naming a captain. For a club that prides itself on tradition, that’s a joke. If I was Gilberto, I’d feel slightly insulted.
Unfortunately, the armband didn’t improve Senderos in the way you might hope, and our high line was quite often exposed by Lazio’s cunning forward play. However, we still managed to take the lead when a Cesc Fabregas shot deflected to Niklas Bendtner, who made up for a poor first-touch with a thumping finish into the far corner.
However, before half-time it was 1-1: Eduardo da Silva made a bizarre decision to go down in our own box, and whilst the rest of the team waited for a free kick to be awarded, Goran Pandev slotted the ball past Almunia.
Eduardo’s night got much better when, in the second half, he nodded home a Tomas Rosicky corner to net Arsenal’s winner. The Croatian striker celebrated his work permit approval with a strong performance, showing lively movement and goalscoring instinct throughout. With Emmanuel Adebayor suffering with a groin injury that could keep him out of the start of the season, it’s imperative that Eduardo settles in right away.
We should’ve made it three when Justin Hoyte hit the post after a remarkable bout of penalty box faffing (Registered Trademark Arsenal FC 2006-07) ended in him missing from all of five yards, but you can’t complain with a 2-1 victory that puts us just behind Ajax on goal difference. Match report here and goals here. As I say, in Saturday’s fixture we’ll get a better indication of the side that will line-up when the Premiership kick’s off. More on that tomorrow.
Today is the draw for the Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round, and there are some real banana skins to avoid: Spartak Moscow, AEK Athens, Sparta Prague and Fenerbahce and more. Knowing our luck, you might aswell book your flights to Moscow now.
UPDATE: We’ve got Sparta Prague. Again.

Morning all - watched the game last night - frighteningly young team - take Almunia away and I think Edwardo was our oldest player at 24!
The first half performance was rubbish. We scored completely against the run of play, Bendtner looks a good finisher, but has no first touch and no movement. Arsene has said he is too raw for the prem, so fair enough.
The defence was pants, but when you consider that with the exception of Fabregas and Clichy 9 of the 11 starters are subs, then you can understand why the performance was a little disjointed.
Eduardo’s movement and link up play was good and he took his goal well and I think he links very well with Rocisky
Anyone else see that Inter beat Man U 3-2 at Old Trafford. ; )
Im off to Amsterdam tomorrow for the Ajax game - hopefully the atmosphere will be a lot better than at yesterdays game!
Anyone else over there?

I THINK WE DID PRETTY WELL YESTERDAY. NICE GOALS FROM EDUARDO AND BENDTNER. GOOD TO SEE ROSICKY IN ACTION AGAIN. CAN’T WAIT TILL WE FACE AJAX……ANOTHER TROPHY…..I HOPE. WOULD REALLY BOOST THE CONFIDENCE OF THE SQUAD.

25. Gunner8 | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:43 am
I was thoughoughly impressed with the second half performance (missed the 1st) Djourou and Senderos were solid at the back with Hoyte and Traore (2nd 11 Defence with Almunia)
Walcott seemed alright, but didn’t see enough of him or Csesc…. …saw more than enough of Song, he is pants and againg put the defenders under imense pressure when his job is to do the opposite. Rosicky looked allright missed Clichy.
Bendtner looked pretty good but must judge his runs better in the prem. vP was his usual self and Dudu was great!
I think he will be our star with his tennacity, heading ability and overall play… …I saw him run back past the halfway line to tackle AWESOME!
26. GilbertoSilver | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:43 am

They have a section called cunts corner - very amusing reading.
31. Geekov | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:47 am
G8; the defence were put under pressure too easy. They didnt get much priotection at all. Song looked quite good, passing wise, but doesn’t get stuck in enough.
I don’t like his style of play, Wenger obviously sees something in him, which is a shame.
Would have rather we kept Muamba (oh no, thats it, now I’m gonna start crying again, and i just got over it and have stopped takling the anti-depressants too, woe is me, woe is me)
32. GilbertoSilver | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:47 am
It’s not you I’m having a dig at Ron - more Sanchez. I don’t agree with him buying all his mates from the NI team.

34. TopCat. | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:49 am
While I do not think Song is anywhere close to commanding a regular spot in the first 11, he did win a lot of 50/50’s and start the move going - that said he also gave the ball away a lot.
He must be the only player at Arsenal that I wouldn’t miss if he went tomorrow.
35. ron | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:50 am
sunderland vs fulham - its gunna be war
north vs south of ireland…
36. Geekov | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:50 am
Huntelaar looked quality yesterday. david effin Platt kept on going on about pace. Apparently Eduardo aint fast enoughm, Huntelaar aint fast enough. Is he on speed or something? Well, by the looks of him, I reckon its more likely smack.
37. Dick (aka Willy) | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:53 am
Senderos. Is just shit.
38. Samuel | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:53 am
I like the duty log mentals on Holy Moly TC. Sneijder is to be at Ajax for another year at least. Can we get Liverpool in the draw? Surely they have to be the hardest team to beat. Also, do we play in it before or after the fulham game, i can’t remember?
39. naz | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:53 am
so do u think more players and do u think we will be signing more palyers
eg: luka modric, lassana diarra
40. Samuel | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:56 am
I had a signed poster of David Platt on my door when I was like 8. Dude was awesome for me when he came with to Arsenla with Bergkamp. Rioch was a dude for bringing both of them too.
That said, I really don’t care for anything he says about anything.
41. Geekov | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:56 am
Dick; Senderos is QUALITY! But I think he’s one of those players you either love or hate.
He’s the footballing equlivilent of Marmite.
42. Romford Pele | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:56 am
disagree about the captain situaiton - I think it’s a great move - he’s giving the message that noone is bigger than anyone else - there’s no room for egos
43. Darkins | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:56 am
Song looked alright yesterday. He didnt make any mistakes and he looked comfortable, much better than when we played him at the back. Still nowhere near Diaby’s class though, I would put him and Flamini in the same bracket.
44. Samuel | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:57 am
naz: i think a player may sign today. and it will be no-one we have been heavily linked to (diarra, modric, anelka).
45. naz | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:58 am
i think if we were to have any chance of chalenging for the championship then we have to sign a proper striker
like huntelaar
bendtner should be put on loan again for one more season then he will be class trust me
46. Darkins | August 3rd, 2007 at 9:59 am
i know its been said already but we have to sort out our defending from crosses! We look all over the place and if Lazio’s forwards could finish we would have lost by 4 goals yesterday.
47. winston | August 3rd, 2007 at 10:00 am
Bendtner first touch was appalling.but at least he made it up.
Does anyone notice our jersey looks like Barcelona’s.
48. y-frontman | August 3rd, 2007 at 10:00 am
You just keep insulting NORTHERN IRELAND and we’ll keep winning! top of our qualifying group! 1-0 David Healy, 1-0 David Healy, 1-0 David Healy, 1-0 David Healy, 1-0 David Healy, 1-0 David Healy, 1-0 David Healy
NORTHERN IRELAND 1-0 ENGLAND……………………..
Boo Ya!
49. TopCat. | August 3rd, 2007 at 10:00 am
I read this on ANR a few days ago - is Myles talking absolute garbage or are we going to sign a class player over the next few days???
“What I’ve been hearing this week is unprintable.
And that’s a shame.
But all of it makes me more optimistic about Arsenal’s immediate prospects.
There’s stuff I can’t write for legal reasons and stuff I’ve promised not to publish. There is also stuff I could spill about upcoming transfer deals but since there’s a slight possibility that spilling that news might jeopardise those deals, I’d better stay silent for the next few days and see what happens. If I rate the players involved, as I do in this case, I always shut up and wait.”
Implies we are to make a good signing.
But could be crap
50. Samuel | August 3rd, 2007 at 10:01 am
Romford Pete: I kind of agree. We all know Gilberto is to be the captain when he returns and the team know it to. The fact that Arsene is passing the rest of the responsibility around and the players are openly trying to put it on themselves and show that the team (although maybe not old enough) are showing they have experience and leadership qualities everyone thought left with freddie and terry.

60. Samuel | August 3rd, 2007 at 10:08 am
TC: If Myles had transfer exclusives he would say. He, like everyone in the western hemisphere knows we are going to sign someone we don’t know, and is going to be like, “I told you so” even when he really doesn’t. Arsenal don’t care what blogs say, or we would have got a comment about Palacio etc. and know that they don’t give a toss even if they do get it right (Sagna) and will just carry on doing their thing Myles or not.
No way did they try taking legal action. We all know that one or two players may be coming and he’s taking our speculation and making it fact (without the, you know, facts.)
61. Bergkamp | August 3rd, 2007 at 10:08 am

Sounds promising. Will see to believe
62. Dick (aka Willy) | August 3rd, 2007 at 10:09 am
Defensively we were fucking shit last night - FUCKING SHITE! Senderos was AWFUL, as too was Djourou (is this guy afraid to head the ball or something?? Goes for everything with his feet). Hoyte was crap - I actually think his miss was worse than Rosicky’s in the Champs League last season. Pathetic.
On a plus note, we did come through the game with a win, namely because of our midfield and forward line. We were very lucky at times tho to not conede, and whilst I accept Senderos and Djourou won’t be our first-choice next season, you can pretty much guarantee that with injuries (i.e. most likely Gallas) and with Toure off to the African Nations, Senderos and Djourou will be paired together in the Premiership at some point next season. Fuck me, I hope it’s not against anyone considerably decent.

I don’t know but we don’t need a CM/RB in Diarra, Wenger said last week like a bazillion times he doesn’t want Anelka and everything I’ve heard about Modric says January.
I gotsa feeling about something happening today though.

I got a feeling about something happening today though.
- - -
Lots of things will happen today - unfortunately none of them will involve footballers transfering to Arsenal.
All I think you can say re the defence yesterday is that while one of senderous or djorou or hoyte may be asked to “fill in”, it is unlikely that all 3 will ever start a game together.
Thank fuck.

Myles Palmer
Author and journalist Myles Palmer was working for The Scotsman when he first encountered George Graham in 1986. Then in 1996 he got a phone invitation to meet a Frenchman who had flown in from Tokyo. That memorable Sunday morning later became the first seven pages of The Professor - Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.
___________________________________________________
so somebody at arsenal phoned him & asked him to come & meet our new manager??
this guy reminds me off my poo.
80. Ruralgoon | August 3rd, 2007 at 10:43 am
Morning!
I would just like to congratulate both Theo Walcott and Gael Clichy for showing maturitycomposure and restraint last night; both were subjected to ridiculous shoving, pushing and man-handling by those bloody cheaty Eytie bas**rds and neither showed a flicker of retaliation where many would have lost their cool [ Eboue, RVP...] and I still cannot believe that Traore is 17…the RLF wants him at Liverpool!
I thought Eduardo showed enormous skill and potential; if he keeps this up, he’ll soon be a firm favourite.
The defensive wobbles were troubling, but seemed largely due to poor communication. Once Phil decided he was gonna clear EVERYTHING regardless of Almunia, things seemed to be better.
81. Frudicus | August 3rd, 2007 at 10:44 am

If we get beat by the likes of spartak moscow then what the f-ck are we doing in the champions league proper?
If you can’t beat the teams you face it means you’re not good enough for the competition.
Personally, I think we’ll trounce them all and make the CL.
We will concede goals with this defense, but our strikers will score bundles. I just know it.

88. Xcalibur | August 3rd, 2007 at 10:53 am
what is peoples obsession with Walcott? im sorry but i just dont get it! he looks like a little lost sheep on the pitch and last nights game was no exception. he constantly misconrolled the ball, lacks a good touch and is totally clueless at skipping past players..
I wouldnt be bothered but our stupid fans have the obsession with constantly chanting Theo Theo…when the boy has done absolutely nothing to justify that….
For the money we paid for him i havent seen a glimpse or any semblance of class from the boy…. and thats being kind …..
The boy is 18 yes….. but he doesnt have the basics upon which his Arsenal foundations would be built upon

I’ve heard from my sources that Quaresma has been seen in north London. it seems that Wenger has loged a £13.9m bid and will sign next Tuesday. Quaresma will wear the 18 shirt.
- - -
I have just heard that Arsenal have launched a bid for Panathanaikos left winger Ivanschitz. If this fails Arsenal try for Schweinsteiger of Bayern Munich.
- - -
AW will finally land his number 1 summer target! Luka Modric (dinamo zagreb) will sign within the next 10 days as he has told Dinamo that he wants to leave now instead of January!
- - -
The next Arsenal signing will be announced shortly and it will be Ibrahim Afellay from PSV. he’s on the brink of the Dutch first team and will be a great player in the future.
Thats all for now - more tantalising morsals to come….

So 150 divided by 4 is 37 eur (20 quid)
+ 250 eur on czech pro’s for the night and we can have an orgy after the footie.
Sweet.

‘the guy is crazy about young boys now.’
Great quote about Wenger I must say
154. TopCat. | August 3rd, 2007 at 12:04 pm
Hi Mavis - I acknowledge that Wenger talks complete bollox sometimes - however, his ability to speak (bollox or not) is fairly low down on my list of qualities a manager must have to make him suitable to manager Arsenal or not.
So when someone says “wenger must go, he talks rubbish” - then I will respond in the correct manner to such a stupid statement.
155. Blog Head | August 3rd, 2007 at 12:05 pm

Surely Wenger has earn’t your confidence for at least one more season

158. bob | August 3rd, 2007 at 12:08 pm
wenger is just a big lie. what happen 2 bring in top players? he said he can get anyone he wants so why dont he? hes got money 2 bring in big so why play so many kids in the first team. its a joke team.
159. Samuel | August 3rd, 2007 at 12:09 pm
Anyone (jhon) who can’t spell their own name correctly should be put down at birth.
I hate Wenger’s cryptics. I know why he does it (teams with more money stealing players) but he treats fans like shit sometimes. I don’t want him to go but I’d like for him to do something about how he (and PHW as well) treat the fans.
160. Columbo M | August 3rd, 2007 at 12:11 pm
157 - Yeah, I spotted that too. Tony can’t even spell Jhon’s name correctly.
I agree about the bullshit talking not mattering too much. It can even be a plus point when it comes to misleading the media hacks, but it’s pretty hard for the fans to know what direction the club’s taking when his statements can’t be trusted. Still, the positive outweigh the negatives.
His ‘I didn’t see it’ phrase is legendary as it pisses off hacks and opposition fans alike.
161. ron | August 3rd, 2007 at 12:11 pm

Bob: I believe he will buy someone and someone over 19.
Quaresma or Drenthe are the obvious targets, so someone who isn’t one of them.
Ron: There is a difference between the occasional accidental spelling and someone who is an incompetant retard who thinks we should listen to what he/she says even though they can’t spell simple words.

i think something funny about wenger and buying so many young boys? has he got a wife or any kids?
205. Glenn Helder | August 3rd, 2007 at 12:53 pm
Definitely need to concentrate on having more discipline and positional awareness on the back line. It cost us so many points that Wenger need to acknowledge that defending a corner properly does not stop us playing beautiful football. Don’t get me wrong I am not jumping on the bandwagon criticising a manager who has been so successful and good for the club but it is odd that something as obvious to everyone else is constantly overlooked. Recruiting Bould or Keown or both to drill the back line into shape would be awsome and gain us several points a season. We have the players not the discipline.
I remember after Cole left there he was muttering that many of the players don’t like taking advice from the seasoned pros - I really hope there’s not an attitude problem with the new batch. Notthat I know him personally but if everone had a similar attitude to Cesc and the desire of Kolo it would go a long way.
206. Kim Il Sung | August 3rd, 2007 at 12:55 pm

Bling it on baby, cant wait.
207. Geekov | August 3rd, 2007 at 12:58 pm
You think that the team just practice their intricate moves and don’t bother with specific defensive training do ya?
Coz as far as I can tell, the defense is making exactly the same mistakes as they were last season.
Nothing has improved and its as if Wenger is just hoping Gallas and Kolo just click and become well solid.
But that can’t be true, shirley?
208. Glenn Helder | August 3rd, 2007 at 1:02 pm
I’m sure they have defensive drills but looking at the number of goals conceded from corners show that it is not working. Something needs to be done - most successful teams have a tight back line and explosive front men. At the moment we are leaking goals and are finding it hard to get a 5% conversion rate from chances made.
I firmly believe that the you th team players will step up but signing a 28+ poacher loke Klose and sorting out the defence will address some pretty obvious problems.
And yah I know we have no width so a winger would be nice too …
209. davey b | August 3rd, 2007 at 1:05 pm
i see martin jol is making excuse’s already
MARTIN JOL admits his summer spending spree has put him under more pressure than ever at Tottenham.
The Spurs boss has shelled out £39million on four players to take the club into second place behind Manchester United in the big-spenders league.
Jol, about to start his fourth season at White Hart Lane, said: “There is more pressure now because people expect more this season.
“That is not easy because we have young players. Arsenal will have the same pressure — although they have a little more experience than us.
“It will be easy for Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United because they have experienced squads.
“For that reason, it’s a bit harder for Spurs and Arsenal than the top three.
“Our turnover is half of Arsenal’s and we have to compete on the pitch but I don’t use that as an excuse.
“I believe we have an English spine plus a lot of talent in our squad and so the sky is the limit.
“We can achieve whatever we want if our mentality is right.”
Talent and youth have been Jol’s priorities in the transfer market with Darren Bent, 23, Gareth Bale, 18, Younes Kaboul, 21, and Kevin-Prince Boateng, 20, joining the club.
Jol believes Spurs will challenge for the title in future but are currently concentrating on breaking into the top four.
He said: “We first have to prove that we are a top- four club because we have never done that before.
“We haven’t even proved we are top five because it took us until two games before the end of the season to get there. So are we good enough? That’s my challenge to the players.
“I want to concede less goals because last season we conceded 54. We need to get that down to 30 before we can compete with the best.
“We score a lot of goals — 57 last season. But if we want to be in the top four, we have to score 70 goals at least.
“We have to be better than Liverpool if we want to be in the top four.
“But if you look at them they buy different players, they buy experience.
“We buy the best young players like Gareth Bale, probably the best 18-year-old left-back in Britain but who still needs to develop.
“The most important thing is if we can develop them, then we can challenge for the title in the future.
“But I can’t say we’ll be better than Arsenal or Liverpool because we need to improve aspects of our game in defence and attack.”

208; Glenn, last season when Arsenal were about to play a team, Wenger came out and saiod, we have been practicing dealing with crosses coz this team put in a lot.
Now, surely, they should be doing that kind of basic shit, every day?
For fooks sake lets get Keown back, promote Bouldy NOW
218. davey b | August 3rd, 2007 at 1:12 pm
“Our turnover is half of Arsenal’s and we have to compete on the pitch but I don’t use that as an excuse.
if you not using as an excuse why bring it up, and the other thing if arsenal were spending that extra turnover on player’s i could undrstand him comparing our income fact is our money is just going staight back in to the club to pay the loan off
some manager’s talk shit

Geekov couldn’t agree more - it beggars belief that they don’t do that as standard. For such an accomplished coach, Wenger doesn not seem to see his weaknesses. You would hope the coaching staff would support him and point this out - what do Rice and Primorac do yes say yes boss ?
I really believe a shake up of the coaching staff would work wonders - Keown is the number one on my list. A Don Howe who could help work out a plan b would be good as we are constantly trying to pass our way though sides.
Don’t get me wrong I really appreciate the quality of football but we need more penetration …
Go on there a line for someone

Adebayor has a groin problem,” Gunners chief Arsene Wenger told the club’s website.
“He missed the Emirates Cup and will miss the Ajax Tournament.
“At best he will be back next week. We hope he can come back in to normal training on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“But I think he will miss the start of the Premiership.”

davey b, Nortveit cost about half a million, the MOST he will cost us is £2Million.

Wenger seems to have quite a difficulty in signing defenders, never mind the coaching of em.

270. robo | August 3rd, 2007 at 2:31 pm
I think we have a great young squad of players and we will play some great football this season and surprise a few pundits.
However I can’t help be worried about Arsene’s tactics and training drills that quite often let us down.
Really basic things like defending corners, beating the first man when taking our own corners, bringing on a sub when defending a corner, NEVER making a change until 70 minutes whatever is happening, playing players out of position, and other pretty basic stuff.
Great at finding and developing players but tactically well behind Fergie, Moanio and Rafa.
Shame ’cause I don’t expect him to be a tactical genius, but just know the basic stuff.
271. TopCat. | August 3rd, 2007 at 2:34 pm

275. TopCat. | August 3rd, 2007 at 2:38 pm
robo - I always find it amusing when people bemoan Wengers tactlics - I agree that we concede far too many from corners, set pieces and our corner taking is poor also….
But our attacking one touch football is unequalled…and thats all down to tactical drills also. Knowing which players will make which runs, how the midfield will interchange with the defence, etc etc,…
So if you mean defensive tactics then I agree, but if you mean tactics overall - then i cant.

how comes the media value Myles’ opinions - and the freaks who write on here won’t give him the time of day - yet still click on the ANR link as soon as it appears on newsnow?
ANR’s Myles interviewed by L’Equipe Saturday magazine
By Myles Palmer
I’ve known Eric Bielderman for years, a lovely guy and a seriously knowledgeable football reporter.
He is based in Paris.
I was very surprised when Eric called and wanted to talk about Arsenal’s future ownership for a major article in L’Equipe’s Saturday magazine.
I don’t seek the spotlight. I’m a shy character who backs into the spotlight very occasionally. Yes, it’s true that I succumbed to those three girls from German TV who had me in the garden talking about Jens Lehmann before the World Cup.
But I tried to get out of Newsnight, talking about Sven-Goran Eriksson, by telling the producer that they should really get somebody younger, less scruffy and less controversial. Then I went out to buy some milk and bumped into a friend who invited me in for a cup of tea and I told him I’d been asked to do Newsnight and he said, “Oh Myles - you should have done it !” An hour later I wandered home and Jan said, “Newsnight have phoned twice. They’re sending a car for you at 9.30.”
Eric Bielderman came round last Saturday morning and we had two hours together and it was wonderful to see him again.
If you are reading this in France, the article comes out tomorrow, I think.
I’m not extensively quoted, but other people are.

279. Glenn Helder | August 3rd, 2007 at 2:42 pm
TC Agreed we play some of the best attacking football in the world but we don’t get enough players in the box to finish the chances and when teams work out how to squeeze us out of a game we have nothing in reserve to break them down. Mourinho seems to be able to change a game with tactical subs - when have we done this and turned a game ?
280. TopCat. | August 3rd, 2007 at 2:45 pm
how comes the media value Myles’ opinions - and the freaks who write on here won’t give him the time of day - yet still click on the ANR link as soon as it appears on newsnow?

easy - because he is a big headed cunt who spends half his time writing about his own self inportance.
His information, however, is usually quite good, hence why we still read it - don’t have to like the bloke.
281. robo | August 3rd, 2007 at 2:46 pm
TC
Yeah - mainly defensive tactics. Some are so obvious though that I think maybe we need a stronger assistant to put his foot down sometimes.
Things like playing Cygan LB for ages, Big Phil at RB once or twice, Diaby playing wide etc.
Going forward I agree we are outstanding and a joy to watch and that is down to Wenger.
Don’t get me wrong I hope Arsene stays for years and years just wish he’d brush up on the basics too.

GH - All Mourinho ever does is bring on Robben / SWP to add pace to his lackluster midfield.
He does this with 20 mins to go and it injects pace to Chelsea’s attack.
Plus we don’t have 35-60 million pounds worth of talent on our bench

TC you have a point about resources but he didn’t just perform straight subs - he often changed the shape of the team and is not afraid to switch things up early. Wenger’s subs always come on at the same time and do very little. I respect your opinion of course but I do think an addition to the backroom staff would shake things up - Rice appears to be a yes man we need a Howe type next to Wenger IMO
299. robo | August 3rd, 2007 at 2:58 pm
The run in the CL was great but rather held together with luck and a back 4 that were forced together rather than Wengers first or even third choice defence.

CL run also co-incided with Keown being back at the club. There’s different personel now but the same mistakes. Romford and TC have a point but surely you both have seen the amount of soft goald we concede. I’m not on an anti Arsenal rant just think this is an area in which we have consistently needed to improve in.
308. Mc Cut n Paste | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:08 pm
Defence = Not fit to wear the shirt
Tactical Organization = a Joke
Sparta Prague = No CL for us. UEFA Cup awaits us instead…
Said it before and will say it again. This side is like the Harlem Globetrotters. Sure, they look dam god in friendlies and the like. BVut when it comes to proper competiton? Ain’t fit for the challenge. So everyone’s having a hard on cos we won a couple of pre-season friendlies eh? Jeez…I also remember us winning a few pre-season friendlies last summer with Rosicky doing pretty well and ppl creaming themselves. How many pts behind the leaders did we end up finishing when the business end of things came up again? Whats that? 21? Nice!
If AW signs 2-3 top-drawer players i.e. Mancini, Schweinsteiger, Sneijder, Huntelaar (who we NEED. Am thrilled AdeTool cannot start the season), Quaresma.
We need at least 2 out of that list and I think Huntelaar is a must. I cannot for one second believe that AW is seriously going to go into this season relying on RVP’s usual long-term injury and AdeTool and the physically slight Eduardo.
If that happens then we’ll struggle in the UEFA Cup n’all….
309. Ruralgoon | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:08 pm
GH; I agree we seemed far more solid defensively when Keown was involved as a defensive coach… it would be great to see him back and involved. If that was the reason behind the improvement, then we should try to get him back.
310. ron | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:11 pm

311. Romford Pele | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:12 pm
too many lapses in concentration at the back for sure - but I dont believe for a second that’s because noone is working on defensive tactics - although the zonal marking system at corners is a bit controversial
312. Glenn Helder | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:13 pm
Fair point TC but the RVP sub is the exception - i’ll bet you’ll be scratching your head to recite another 3 that have had the same impact TBH ??
BTW I reckon we definitely have the best blogs - Gunnerblog/Arseblog/Goodplaya/ANR
313. Mc Cut n Paste | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:14 pm
2 things:
1) TopCat: I thought you were going to try and be a bit more balanced in you analysis of Arsenal? So I see you’ve returned to your creationism theories of Papa Wenger creating the earth, the moon and the sun.
2) Romford Pele: So let me get this straight. Arsene Wenger’s defensive tactics are perfect, Diaby is ‘world-class’, we have ‘one of the strongest squads’ in the league, we have ‘plenty’ of world-class players and Wenger ‘knows’. And anyone who does not think the team will rinse out the league is ‘not a real fan’.
So I guess my question to you is this: if the above is true…could you pls explain to me why we have finished 12, 24 (!) and 21 pts behind the leaders in successive seasons? Could you also pls explain to me why the ‘woeld-class’ Gael Clichy has never been ONCE called up to the French national team despite France having had THREE different managers in all periods? Could you also please explain to me why we have Zero European cups? Or do you want to explain to me why PSV knocked our ‘tactically brilliant’ defence out of Europe?
I suppose it wasn’t papa Wenger’s fault. Nah he takes no blame whatsoever. Only the manager inne? Probably too busy creating the moon and stars at the time….
314. red25 | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:17 pm

315. Mc Cut n Paste | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:17 pm
TC yes. Papa Wenger’s subs are one of the strongest points of his management innit? Yeah. Name the one occasion he got it right why don’t you. That’s not one-eyed at all is it? Now…if I told you about a certain little Champions league final in Stade de France now…..his subs were wicked that night were’nt they? Taking Pires off…leaving Hleb on…not bringing Reyes on…or RVP….yeah. Wenger ‘knows’…
316. Ruralgoon | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:18 pm
Romford; zonal marking should be abolished! Liverpool have used it for ages and frankly it’s been disastrous for them. I don’t see how it can ever really work unless you are playing a team that are that stagnant in the box that there’s no risk of them moving “zones”. Too many times you see one player up against two or three opposition players as they all move into that zone, and their original markers are left stranded.
317. TopCat. | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:18 pm
MC Cut and Paste..
Fuck off dozy cunt.
Im suddenly imbalanced because I don’t believe wenger is tactically inept?
You really are a fucking wind up merchant.
318. TopCat. | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:20 pm
PS.
Anyone that calls Wenger “papa wenger” and talks about the main with such venom - is more imbalanced than I will ever be.
319. TopCat. | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:23 pm
Que - MC CUNT N WASTE ranting for the next few hours about how piss poor Wenger is - and going on to list every mistake he has ever made.
Because Fergie doesn’t make mistakes, Jose doesn’t make mistakes - Rafa doesn’t make mistakes?
For fuck sake - its football - enjoy it instead of being so fucking depressing all of the time and you may remove that rather large chip that is on your shoulder.
320. Glenn Helder | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:25 pm
RP i’m sure there is some training but as Geekov pointed out 217 AW s said some odd things about defensive training. I’m sure Kolo and co aren’t supping beers whils everyone else works on a quick passing game but surely we all acknowledge the bigger picture - we saw it all last season. Despite this weakness we have done brilliantly - if we tighten up we’ll go so much further.
321. DeiseGooner | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:28 pm
I see the doom mongers are out in force again. Ill be off so. Its friday, i finish work soon, im off out to the pub and my weekend will be filled with bbqs , beer , Arsenal vs Ajax and street music festival. I cant stay around here are listen to this and get all that off to such a bad start.
322. Romford Pele | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:29 pm
McCut and paste
I’ll tell you why we’ve finished so far behind because we are IN TRANSITION. Fuck me is it so hard to understand?
we have shipped out an entire team and have gradually replaced them with youngsters who are clearly talented but still make mistakes and lack consistency.
All I am saying is that AW has proved himself sufficiently to have earned a little trust among us fans- have some patience and see what he can create with this team - in time it might just be his best team ever.
or do you disagree that Wenger has done enough to prove himself??
323. Glenn Helder | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:30 pm
Mc Cut n Paste pretty agressive way of making your point but yes the Ajax game is a good example of why we need another tactician. Liverpool brushed them out of the way with ease and let’s face it last season Liverpool
324. TopCat. | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:31 pm
Far better put than I could have Romford.
I guess after explaining it 1,000 times to dickheads just like him, I cannot be arsed anymore.

326. Romford Pele | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:38 pm
as for games in which Wenger’s substitutions have made a difference, here’s a few:
- Rvp comes off the bench to equalise v ManYOO at home last season
- RVP scores 2 goals as a sub in the fa cup semi v blackburn
- cesc comes off the bench to set up both goals in the 2-2 at shite hart lane
- Pires comes off the bench to score the match winning 5th goal iin the 5-4 at shite hart lane
- bergkamp comes off the bech to score the winner in the 2-1 against Thun in the 2005 CL
I could go on…..
327. Glenn Helder | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:39 pm
Mc Cut n Paste pretty agressive way of making your point but yes the Ajax game is a good example of why we need another tactician. Liverpool brushed them out of the way with ease and let’s face it last season Liverpool weren’t that great. We can always look at the examples of the team coming through but in the main some of thepoints raised have been a frustration for years
328. Romford Pele | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:40 pm
PSV were lucky, we had so many chnaces in a 10 minuite flurry at the emirates and then we got sloppy at the back…
not good enough that’s for sure - but we should have won by a few clear goals
329. gazzap | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:50 pm
rural, your point about zonal marking was spot on. when several players move into a zone it makes it impossible for the defender of that zone to pick all those attackers. no defender I know likes zonal marking, but coaches do.
wenger has always built his sides on perfecting the attack and lets the defence sort itself out. most other teams sort the defence out first and then try to improve the attack. not saying I want that, but I do feel a bit more time and effort on defending might be worthwhile.
330. Dick (aka Willy) | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:55 pm
Hi Marcus!! Finished hiding now??
TOPCAT & ROMFORD —
with words like “Papa Wenger” and “nah” as well as his constant self-destruction of his love for Arsenal, I think you two can rest assured that you’ve heard all of “McCut & Paste’s” crap before - as he’s clearly none other than Marcus aka Martin Barney aka Pussy Who Didn’t Show Up At Rococco’s.
Go away Marcus. You’re a knob.
331. Glenn Helder | August 3rd, 2007 at 3:56 pm
Fair play RP - I guess the ones that always stick out in my mind are the pointless ones - bringing on a Senderos or a Cygan 15 mins from time only for us to concede
Agreed on the Ajax needed a cutting edge I guess
332. Dick (aka Willy) | August 3rd, 2007 at 4:09 pm
Let’s be honest, to go along with his ‘good’ substitutions, Wenger has made some pretty big, ramifying mistakes as well:
a) subbing Pires in the CL final - Pires deserved his chance, was in great form and would have offered us more than that cunt Hleb who looked entirely lost in the second half. Plus he pretty much left because of that, he even said so.
b) subbing Fabregas off when we were 1-0 up in the CL final - a few minutes later, Barca score. Why sub Fabregas??? He was the youngest player on the pitch, arguably the fittest and as soon as he went off, there were massive holes left in our midfield which in turn created more space for Barca out wide.
c) bringing on Reyes instead of Bergkamp when we were 2-1 down in the CL final. Bergkamp would have died for the cause in those last five minutes when we were chasing an equaliser. Instead, all that CUNT Reyes did was run around gawping at the Barca players like a star-struck kid. Fucking bullshit.
d) not starting with Henry against PSV in the home leg: I’m sorry, but when you have a player who’s half-injured, you start with them so you can assess how they get on and sub once they’re reached whatever limit their injury has imposed on them. Instead he brings him on as sub, then can’t take him off when he gets injured as he’d need to use another sub. Fucking stupid. That pretty much damaged Henry for the entire season, never played for us again - THAT WAS HIS LAST GAME! Maybe if he was playing in the team toward the end of the last campaign, and yes I know it’s easy to say “if”, but “if” he was then maybe he wouldn’t have had so much time on his hands to sulk at becoming so detached from the team and start planning his move to Barcelona.
I could go on…
HOWEVER — overall, I do agree with Topcat and RP that Wenger has done enough to earn our trust, and that he has made some very good key decisions at crucial moments in games. It seems he’s made more mistakes than he has probably due to the fact that when he makes one, the ripple effects of that mistake are huge.
But people calling for Wenger to be sacked are fucking clueless. RVP, Cesc, Toure - they’d all be on their way if Wenger went.
333. Glenn Helder | August 3rd, 2007 at 4:12 pm
Not sure how anyone can honestly want Wenger out - just reactionary rubbish - those same people will be saying what a god he is if we win something

Well, MARCUS, you pant-sniffing job-hunter, now you’ve revealed yourself as a Chelsea fan (what’s the matter, spent all your dole money down the bookies? Hope you didn’t put a bet on you actually winning anything this year). Maybe the police have tagged your ankle again, which is why you’re left with nothing else to do than use your stolen laptop and mobile to pollute our beatufiul site. Well, while I have your attention (assuming your ADD even allows you to read this far), let me tell you something about your cunting club:
Your manager’s a cunt.
Your chairman’s a cunt.
Your players are cunts.
Your mum’s a cunt.
You’re a cunt.
Cunt, cunt, cunt, cunt, cunt. Oh, and you’re stadium is a fucking shit-hole.
Good luck when Abramovich gets bored of smelling John Terry’s shorts after matches and finds a new hobby - possibly scuba diving for lost gold - and leaves you mugs high and dry. Let’s see if your players stay put. Let’s see if anyone picks up Lampard’s or Terry’s 130k-a-week wage-bill.
Your club is built on paper, nothing more.

I’m still a little bit worried about our defense which obviously can’t keep clean-sheets any more. Sometimes I feel a strong need to kick them straight in the arse for their poor positioning and their awful handling of crosses and headers. I always thought Gallas would bring us stability at the back but so far we haven’t seen anything convincing from him that he is capable to do that. My memories of him were good when he was playing for Chelski (just watch the goal he scored against Spuds on youtube) but at Arsenal he has barely shown his class. If we want to stand a chance for fourth place we must put in much better performances at the back and that holds for everybody even for Kolo and Clichy.

I agree with Dave, the defence is the main problem.
If we had a strong defence, we could turn frustrating draws to wins and narrow losses to draws. I think we will rely on Gallas and Toure and I really hope they can make a successful partnership.
Otherwise it’s just going to be frustration all over again.

Friday night, I was at the local, and spotted this gorgeous blonde girl in an Arsenal shirt. Bemused, I walked up to her and we started talking. She was legit. Turns out she’d spent four years in London, and her ex had turned her into an Arsenal fan during the late nineties. They broke up when Overmars left, and she came home to Melbourne soon after, but she’d always kept a flame for the Arse.
Anyway, one thing led to another, and an hour later, we were back at her place. We didn’t bother with the lights, fumbling our way through to the bedroom. You might think you know where this is headed, but you don’t. Trust me.
It was weird from the start. She called me Thierry Henry as we did it. Thinking it was a weird sex game, I called her Nicole Merry. She responded by calling me Theo Walcott, and I started screaming out Melaine Slade. At this point, I was puzzled, but decided to play along. Never having had sex with a football fans before, I thought it might’ve been a mating ritual or something. But then, things got scary. Fucking scary.
She said Jose Mourinho. I thought I misheard, but she started screaming his name over and over. I reached over for the bed light, and flicked it on. I had the fright of my life. She wore a leery, salacious look, the kind that’s as hot as sin and twice as addictive. But below that, she had a full-body tattoo of Jose Mourinho, with her titties as eyes and her belly button at the centre of his trade-mark smirk.
I jerked away from her, and to my horror, I saw what I’d been plugging away at for the past ten minutes.
Ashley Cole’s beaming face stared out at me from between her parted legs. His eyes were above her pubic hair, his chin just above her anus, and his mouth was… let’s just say Ashley’s nickname was an apt choice. A mobile phone was tattooed on one inner thigh, and a Baby Bentley with a fistful of cash on another. I could feel the bile coming up my throat. I sprung off the bed and groped around for my pants. I muttered something about a previous engagement, and high-tailed it out of there, and spent the rest of that night huddled in my shower, trying to scrub the filth of my body. Unfortunately, there’s nothing I can do to rub it out of my mind.
I’ve still got her phone number, but I don’t know what to do. Should I call her?
