Arsenal 2 - 1 Inter: Breathtaking Robin Soars

0 guns July 30th, 2007

With a shimmy, a side-step, a drag-back and a blast with his right foot, Robin van Persie won the Emirates Cup.  A breathtaking goal.  Arsene may have talked about the importance of a team ethic in the wake of Henry’s departure, but if Robin keeps doing things like this then nothing will be able to stop him emerging as the star of this young Arsenal side.

Yes, it was only a friendly, and yes, Inter Milan were not fielding a full-strength side, but nonetheless this was a good victory.  After falling behind to a David Suazo header, we showed a great deal of respect for our fans by fighting back to claim the Emirates trophy.

The first goal came from Aleksandr Hleb, finishing at the second attempt after Eboue played in Sagna to pull it back.  Eboue and Sagna combined well throughout the game, and certainly have the potential to build a strong partnership on the right-hand side.  Sagna is strong in the air and powerful in the tackle, whilst Eboue looked very dangerous in the final third.

Hleb, meanwhile, deserved his goal after another excellent performance in the role I originally envisaged for him behind the striker.  Whilst it’s clear he’s never going to be a Bergkamp, he could certainly prove a useful linking player, particularly in the Champions League.  I can’t be the only fan who doesn’t want to see him wide again.

Gallas and Toure looked unusually solid, whilst even debutant Kieran Gibbs had a decent game, and wasn’t over-awed by the occasion or the opposition.  The Emirates Cup has been important for Arsenal in terms of getting fit and bringing in a few quid, but crucially it’s also given fans a reason for a bit of optimism.

A win was neccessary to keep the trophy after PSG trounced Valencia 3-0.  Their fast, free-flowing football was a joy to watch at times.  It’s obvious this Le Guen fellow knows what he’s doing, and if PSG undergo a renassaince under his stewardship I’m sure we’ll hear his name linked with Arsenal again.

On to Amsterdam now where we’ll be joined by Tomas Rosicky, Theo Walcott, Emmanuel Adebayor, and Eduardo.  Eduardo’s work permit hearing isn’t until Thursday, but meanwhile he’s free to train/play/cavort in Amsterdam, or indeed anywhere else on the continent.

One player who certainly won’t be there is Jose Reyes, who is expected to sign for Athletico Madrid today for €9m.

It’s been a good weekend, but I don’t want to be hear in a year’s time going, “Well, at least we won the Emirates Cup”.  Arsene’s got a month left in which to bring in the players we need.  This time, with all the cash from Freddie and Jose, I trust him to do it.

  • 13. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:27 am

hleb - was very very good.

i admit that i am quick to get frustrated with his indirectness & lack of a desire to shoot, tho in may he said he was working on it & it showed after beating 2 men in midfield & missing his first shot, with his back to goal, u could see thoughts… im guna bury this!!!

much more of that attitude please hleb.

    12th?

  • 15. besor  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:32 am

wenger must start players in their natural position. hleb was excellent in his position. play diaby, rosicky, dudu, hleb etc in their position and they will deliver. if no player in any particular position, then sign somebody. it’s as easy as that.
if he want to do some kind of experiment, do it in the reserve team. not the first team

who else is a bit peeved to see gallas being the first Arsenal player to get his hand s on our first piece of ’silverware’ this season.?

  • 22. dtxlondon  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:37 am

    My evaluation:

1.hleb plays so much better when he has space to turn, not being squeezed playing on the wing.

    2. Eboue was awsome on the right.

    3. Sagna impressed me too.

    4. Robin is really enjoying the no.1 striker role now that Henry has vanished…..his interview was class.

How will Eduardo fit into the side?? Any ideas on starting 11??

    Perhaps:

    Lehmann

    Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy

    Gilberto Fab

    Hleb Rosicky
    Eduardo
    V.Persie

  • 23. averagely-endowed gooner  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:38 am

sorry but im not to keen on gallas as captain. In his short time at arsenal he has done very little to endear himself 2 the fans. And whilst he may be vastly experienced, hes not using it to help us. And he was the only source of defensive mistakes yesterday, and was very lucky to get a couple of free kicks which saved his skin after messing about with the ball in our own box.

And it seems wengers done it agen with sagna. Terrific defender, good on the ball and seldomly wasteful, great crosser of the ball. Looks a very promising signing indeed.

  • 24. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:39 am

No one is pretending for a second that this game means we are now automatic favourites for the league - or even that we played amazing football and scored 5 goals….

but, what I fail to understand is the fucking hypocracy of the anti-gunners.

We lose 1-0 to salzburg - and it proves that we are shit

We beat PSG and Inter - and they are just friendlies and we are rose tinted, simply for expressing happiness for having won them!

Next up, the LG tournament - Lazio, Alhletico, Ajax and us.

If we win that too - then it will be another round of posts saying its “only friendlies” - for fuck sake - if you spend your whole life willing a team to lose, then you will never be happy when they win.

We all agree that 1-2 new additions would be great - AW seems to be hinting toward them too…

re Sagna - did I make a mistake - I thought he pulled it back to Hleb for the goal against Inter?

    Overall - lots of positives.

    And amazing goal by RVP.

Tubes - I will hold up a sign.

Or you can come meet me and my g/f in amsterdam and come to the games on Saturday (Lazio / Athletico) and (Ajax / Arsenal).

  • 25. besor  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:41 am

me too fly.toure suppose to be captain and lift the cup. even clinchy or eboue is more deserved to lift the cup than gallas ffs.

we really should kick the habit of conceding the first goal from the opponent first attempt on goal.it start to get embarrassing

  • 26. averagely-endowed gooner  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:43 am

would love to mate but i´ll be in england from wednesday so no can do unfortuantly. i think your right about sagna as well.

hopefully the reyes deal gets completed today so wenger can go shopping with a healthy budget even though he should already have one.

  • 31. Terrorist Sam  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:49 am

I don’t think Gallas should be second choice but if he is going to start asserting himself and proving himself as one of those players leading the team, it’s fine by me.

  • 32. besor  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:50 am

am i mad to think that we might not need a new singning on right flank? i think eboue was outstanding there and most of the threat come from his surging run down the flank. with theo there as back up i think we only need to concentrete on the left side.

  • 33. Begeegs  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:51 am

According to Wenger, he sees Eduardo being able to play on the flanks.

  • 38. Ruralgoon  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:54 am

    Morning!

Well, what a great weekend- two full afternoons worth of football, two full arsenal matches, two wins, two goals per game…

I did think I might have to shout abuse at Sagna, after the first game saw him pass either backwards or at best sideways all bar twice that he had the ball in a relatively comfortable position. Someone on the coaching staff must also have noticed,as this annoying trait all but vanished yesterday!

Still not comfy either with Willy G… Both performance wise and with regard to the captaincy, even on a temporary basis. It just doesn’t sit right somehow; perhas I’m doing him a disservice, perhaps the players love him and respect hima nd he’s a driving force in the dressing room… but I just dont buy that!

Overall, a great couple of performances and the smile is back on my face :-)

  • 39. Tubes  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:56 am

just watched the vid… i would definatly.

  • 40. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:57 am

    i already have… probably

  • 41. Samuel  |  July 30th, 2007 at 10:57 am

besor: I think that if we have Rosicky/Hleb (at this form) on the left and Eboue/Walcott on the right, we have our flanks as good as anywhere else. The more I think about it, the more I really don’t know where we need signings but we need them. Hopefully Wenger will surprise us and I can jump up and down with a smile on my face. The squad is both overly full (with each player more than adaptable in 2/3 positions) and yet still short to the point where it hurts the head if you think too hard about it.

Real have supposedly bid today 60million for Kaka. And only 5 for Reyes!!! Cunts.

  • 45. Indian Gunner  |  July 30th, 2007 at 11:01 am

Wow, what a fantastic goal. RVP’s movement away from the ball was superb and the dummy to fake the defender was breathtaking. RVP is special, especially in these sorts of situations, I think we’ve known that for a while.

If he stays injury-free this season, who knows what he could do for us. A renaissance like the one a certain Portugese player created for the champions last season? I sure hope so.

  • 46. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 11:01 am

Samuel - sorry, Hleb - left wing - NOOOOO.

He played great in the position behind the strikers - and Rosicky is not really a left wing player either.

Either RVP or Eduardo would have to play there.

Unless AW plans to put Traore there….

If AW plays Hleb in his natural position then, we have one fuck of a chance of getting the best out of him. Eboue was superb right wing, RVP is RVP and is super. If he stays fit and can score more than 20 goals per season for 2 seaons in a row, then, we can start to call him world-class. However no point having open-top bus parades for a firendly against a half-fit pedestrian Inter second-string side. Nice to wni yes but this was not Blackburn or Everton away, when our REAL tests will come.

We still deserately need two top top signings to compete.

Would just like to add that ron is a wank-stain and a world-class cunt. If AW is ever looking for a ’super-super class’ cunt, then look no further than ron on Gunnerblog. And his pointless long post of shit.

    Cunt.

  • 50. besor  |  July 30th, 2007 at 11:04 am

samuel: i’m afraid hleb and risicky will never hit their top form if they continue to play on the flank becoz its not their natural position and to support that theory , everybody can see how terrific was hleb in the middle of the park and he can even score a goal! its all related to self confidence while playing in position they familiar with.

  • 51. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 11:07 am

What are you going on about mate? Everybody saw Hleb was more effective in the middle and it’s evident he cuts inside when playing outwide narrowing play ( as was the case last seasonand on sat). The same happens with Rosicky who’s evidently wasted on the right. The you go on saying this should continue to be the case?! You’re wrong wrong and wrong again mate!

My comment about Hleb: I would play him kind of like Messi plays for Barca, give him free reign kinda on the wing, kinda in the middle depending on where he is needed or where there is space for him to do his little dribbles and mucho passing etc. So, playing somewhere like this:
    ——————–Lehmann——————–
    Sagna——-Gallas—–Toure——Clichy
    ——————Gilberto———————
    Walcott——-Fabregas———-Rosicky
    ——————————Hleb————-
    —————Van Persie——————–

I am going to leave gunnerblog now. Hopefully GS can sort out this shitty hacker thing going on. Good luck GS, would hate to see your great blog go under because of one or two cunts.

in the game against inter, does anyone else think that whenever we got a great chance to launch a quick counter attack, we sort of slow down the tempo of the play and almost like we wait for the opposition to get back and defend.? are we really unabble to do our famous ‘Arsenal counter attack’ anymore?
we do have a sppedy player in eboue and tgibbs and traore but we do not use their asset well

  • 79. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 11:59 am

Van Persie said: “Football is not about age. It’s not about money. It’s not about those things. Football is about if you want to run for each other, if you want to fight for each other, if you want to really play some ball.

“Chelsea and Manchester did a great job last year. It’s hard to fight with them but I know we can do it.

“Liverpool have spent lots of money, Chelsea have been doing that the last few years. I respect that. This is their way of winning things. But we can win things as well.

“We are young. So what? Age doesn’t matter. It’s about the way we play football and the way we like to play together.”

Van Persie says it would be even more of an achievement for Arsenal to lift the title against the odds. He explained: “If you win the title with this team it would be great. I really believe we can do that. I really believe that in my heart. I think the manager is thinking the same.

“Since 18 June I started preseason training and I’m with these boys every day and I see their ability. Yes they are young and young people make mistakes but that doesn’t really matter. Like in love, age doesn’t matter.”

Van Persie says the fluidity of Arsenal’s play yesterday was a huge bonus with the Premiership opener against Fulham still 13 days away.

“I was quite surprised we played this good football so early in the season because this is just pre-season,” he added.

“It was just the fifth game - and for me, and a few others as well, the first full match.

“We played some tremendous football. It was quite funny because during the game Cesc [Fabregas] and I were smiling at each other because we liked the fact that we were playing so well.

“Everyone was really happy to play in this game. If we play the same way or even less, we will have a big chance to at least fight for the title.”

It was a viewpoint shared by Arsenal’s young midfield master Fabregas, who stepped up his pre-season by playing for 83 minutes. “You could see that even today we have a better team than last year,” said the Spaniard.

“Some of the Inter players were saying during the game, ‘Don’t make me run so much, you play so well’. If some players from Inter say that, it means something.

“We have a very young squad but we’re not scared of anything and want to win things. Last year we had big injuries to big players. It affects you. They are great players and you miss them.

“We have a strong team and we can win. But we need luck as well with the injuries. Manchester United and Chelsea when they win big trophies, they nearly play the same players every weekend. In that way you have to be lucky as well. After today I am not worried because everybody was so good.

“The feeling was that we are all happy and that’s what we want to feel after every game. I think today was the first trophy of many this season.”

Fabregas snubbed a move to Real Madrid during the summer despite admitting that he would love to return to Spain eventually, but insists he has a long-term commitment to Arsenal after signing an eight-year contract last year.

He said: “Since I signed this contract everybody could see I really believe in this team and my commitment is the same as the first day I came here. I believed I could do something for Arsenal and now I have the chance to play for the first team.

“I have a big responsibility, like everybody, and all I want to do is play here. For me, you never know in the future. When you are a footballer, anything can happen. Right now, Arsenal is the best place for me to be.

“I always believed in the team and they make me believe. When you play this kind of football it is always enjoyable. But you can’t always have a game like today. But that doesn’t worry me. I’m happy at Arsenal, I want to continue here and win many things for the club.”

    All very positive stuff….

    Good lads…

  • 80. TH14 aka Fab4  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:00 pm

I can’t believe that real would pay 21m for roben 60m for Kaka 19.5m for Pepe and only 5 m for Reyes, what a joke!

  • 81. WillyG  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:02 pm

    yeah that`s what I thought

  • 82. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:19 pm

80 - only cos they thought they had the upper hand.

also, its worth remembering that inter are 4 weeks behind us

  • 83. Garfield  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:20 pm

Good to hear some positive vibes for once….
TC LOL @ Quaresma plane landing. Arnold gone into hiding. Also good to see you are making your posts more balanced….

  • 84. Garfield  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:22 pm

Real’s 60 million quid offer for Kaka is a JOKE. If he was an Arse player though I STILL wouldn’t sell him, even at hat price. He’s head and shoulders the best player in the world today and shits all over the overrated Ronaldinho. Would not sell him for anything less than £80 million plus one player. Players like Kaka come once every ten years.

  • 85. Frudicus  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:23 pm

What a performance by the lads against inter. I was very impressed by the boys, i think eboue on the right is gonna kick some ass this season.

We need a player like eboue who can take people on and create space for others. I wonder if wenger is gonna play this formation for most of the season, and then switch to 442 if we go a goal down. The positives if we play this formation is that Hleb and Rosicky will play in their best position.

    The future is bright lads!!

TC - Back to being rose-tinted i see!

  • 86. garfield  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:24 pm

  • 87. TH14 aka Fab4  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:26 pm

It was good to see that when we needed a goal R.V.P. came up with a piece of magic like Henry probably would have.

  • 88. Frudicus  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:28 pm

Why does everyone think fabregas is so amazing? What did he do in that game, I would sell him, and stick rosicky in the middle instead. All he does is get the ball, and pass to the next nearset person, cant take people on, cant run fast. I say let him fuck off!

  • 89. Ruralgoon  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:29 pm

I’m afraid Reyes’ attitude and frankly ludicrous degrees of inconsistency have slashed his market value. After all, would you, having seen him whinge about the club, the country, the weather and demanding this move or that, be prepared to spend more than £6-8 million on the of-chance that he might settle in? I know He’s been at real and should be settled there, but he’s not exactly been consistent for them either..

  • 90. TH14 aka Fab4  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:30 pm

i would if he played for my team last season without winging.

  • 91. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:32 pm

This arsenal team is by no way complete we still need a winger…

  • 92. TH14 aka Fab4  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:32 pm

And wanted to play for my club like he did.

  • 93. ladoze  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Gil is the right man to lead our young gunners to be A CHAMPION this season…theres no doubt about it..The boys are so damn fast and play even better than last season..AND REMEMBER THEY ARE YOUNG…

  • 94. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

    88 what the fuck??

he always makes himself available, so team mates are less likely to lose the ball.

he has great positional awareness & composure on the ball.

    can provide very good passes

these things may seem simple but they are not & they are vital to the whole movement off the team.

  • 95. TH14 aka Fab4  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

    91, and a defender…

  • 96. Frudicus  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

    Out with Fabregas!!!!

  • 97. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

and as for frudicus. where have you been for the past 2 seasons there aren’t many players in the world that can do what fabregas does. you say all he does is passes he had the second most assists last season which shows his passing is more penetrative and that is only the beginning

  • 98. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:35 pm

and next week i will be discussing defending

    +1

  • 104. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:36 pm

yes he can run past players no he doesnt have deadly pace but he still has dribbling ability to pass players and he does this many times. he has the ability to create space and time for himself to pick the perfect pass. he is only 20 and is always improving his defensive side of his game. soon he can start to score more goals.

  • 105. Ruralgoon  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:37 pm

Sorry to spoil it for you Ron, mi laddo, but I just had to have it!

  • 106. Frudicus  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:37 pm

97 - Agreed, but he is just a 1 trick pony, I hope he gets injured and Rosicky gets put in his role. Rosicky has got loads more to his game, he can pass, take players on, tackle and score. Fabregas does not offer us goals, only assists. Rosicky however offers both!

  • 107. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

I just had to have it!
    ——————————————

i get that a lot rural

  • 108. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:39 pm

i will say Rosicky is very good yet if you look at it last season he scored a minimal amount of goals and took the most amount of shots in the whole team. there is no doubting his ability but i believe that we have expeted a good long range shooter in rosicky and a good finisher which we have not found in him yet i still think he is class with his pace and skill and creative abilities

  • 109. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:40 pm

honestly for a person you said can score many goals how many goals did rosicky get last season? not many…

  • 110. Frudicus  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

Compare rosickys games to goals ratio to fabregas’, Rosicky was very unlucky last season to not get more goals, he will make up for it this season. I hope fabregas gets injured for a month or so just so we can have Rosicky in his best position so he can show us what he’s capable of.

  • 111. Frudicus  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

109 - I said more goals (than fabregas)

  • 112. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:44 pm

ok den look at shots to goal ratio and rosicky takes the most shots out of thee whole arsenal squad

  • 113. Frudicus  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:45 pm

112 - Coz every1 else is too fuckin scared to shoot, thats why he has to do it. You lot are never happy, you moan we need to shoot more, then you moan when we do.

  • 114. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:46 pm

    110. Frudicus | July 30th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

  • 115. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:47 pm

NOONES COMPLAININ THAT HE SHOOTS doesn’t mean that hes shooting on target though. if there is a player i would want to shoot from far most it is VAN PERSIE

  • 116. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:48 pm

    Frudicus what age are u?

    surely 16 at most

  • 117. Columbo Mavis  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:48 pm

    Frudicus mate..
Rosicky is a class act, but how can you dis Fabregas? He creates space for other players, his ball retention is awsome. his range of passing is varied and accurate and although he could improve on his defensive side, you can’t fault his efforts in that area. He’s not afraid to get stuck in. The goals will come from him eventually.
Fabregas makes the difficult things look simple, that’s why you don’t notice it so much.. that’s no mean feat, at the age of 20, in one of the top leagues in the world!

  • 118. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:49 pm

look fabregas played 54 games last season scored 4 goals and made 15 assists
rosicky played 37 games 6 goals and 4 assists

  • 119. TH14 aka Fab4  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:50 pm

whats Rosicky’s shot to shots on target ratio?

  • 120. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:50 pm

sorry to break up the kiddies convo but its my b’day in 2 weeks…

    rural, do i get a b’day kiss…??

  • 121. Frudicus  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:50 pm

Yeah but did you see how many times fabregas got tackled over the weekend hes shit! Rosicky can do exactly what he can but better. He can make space for players by taking people on, or just keeping the Ball. No mate im 21, i agree fabregas is great, but rosicky, in my opinion offers more!

  • 122. Samuel  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:51 pm

89, Rural - Clubs pay 10+ million for Anelka every year, so why not be stupid enough to do so with another former Arsenal player?

  • 123. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:52 pm

now i am not trying to campare the two players but we can see who is more effective 6 goals for rosicky is not good enough really considering the quality of ljungberg and pires but no doubting still rosickys ability and knowing he will get better and still i beieve his debut season was a successful one. but as we can see fabregas has more than done his job 15 assists and we know he must im prove both defensively and scoring wise but we know fabregas can do it. and at the age of only 20 he is amazing not many players can do what he does.

  • 124. TH14 aka Fab4  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:53 pm

I want to see Rosicky in the middle but i don’t want us to leave out Gilberto or Fabregas so instead of wishing people were injured why don’t we just change our formation?

  • 125. Columbo Mavis  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:54 pm

Reyes’ fee has depleted because clubs know we’re in a situation where he has to be sold. That’s the fundemental reason, as far as I can see. The player’s made it clear he won’t play for us again and Wenger’s not gonna have an uphappy player in the dressing room, so clubs know that they don’t have to pay the going rate for a player of his ability.

  • 126. Samuel  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:55 pm

Also, if we are playing the who we want to shoot more game, surely its hleb and fab…

  • 127. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 12:57 pm

if someone checks it out, i’d bet fabregas is probably one of the players who shoots the most.

  • 128. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:00 pm

    1 Thierry Henry 78 52.6%
    2 Emmanuel Adebayor 58 51.7%
    3 Francesc Fabregas 55 54.5%
    4 Robin Van Persie 52 48.1%
    5 Tomas Rosicky 52 44.2%

  • 129. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:00 pm

know lets compare fabregas amongst some of the best last season
everyone was talking about scholes he only made 1 ASSIST last season in the premiership
the only man united player that came close was rooney with 11 assists and ronaldo with 8
GERRARD yes gerrard only 2 ASSISTS in the prem last season liverpools top player was crouch with 6 and finally
finally we have lampard with 10 assists and that is by far the highst in the chelsea squad. FABREGAS GOT 11 ASSISTS IN THE PREMIERSHIP LAST SEASON THIS IS PROOF HE IS AMONGST THE BEST…………..

  • 130. Samuel  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:00 pm

TH14 aka Fab4: I think this is why people want us to sign a winger, someone like Robben who is basically a striker but on the side. Then we can play an interchangable 4-5-1/4-3-3 with Rosicky/Hleb, Gilberto/Diaby, Fabregas/Denilson in the middle all doing very different, but essential jobs without having to be wide-men/strikers as well.

  • 131. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:01 pm

You could tell Inter were up for the game against us yesterday. The tempo was far higher.

The goal they scored, from their only effort on target (but of course) was quality and the fella who scored would have been fit as hell coming off the back of the Copa. Still, it does raise some doubts about the Kolo/Gallas partnership.

I’d have Senderos with one of em, but thats coz I just lurve the big swiss chessy geezer.

RvP’s comments were effin gr8 too. I loved when the interviewer said what a gr8 gioal and he goes, which one? Oh yopu mean the one today?

    Ha blommin ha!

” signings to come in and possibly this week.

    I can smell em. Sniff

  • 132. davey b  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:01 pm

the most important player’s in the arsenal midfiled should be fabregas ,gilberto are shoe in’s ,and the monster that is diaby who has strength ,determination ,skill ,and has the ability to run a game

  • 133. Samuel  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:02 pm

ron: oh ok, as someone who can’t afford to go to the games, I just see him on match of the day not scoring very often. thanks for the stats though.

yeah but be fair ron rosiscky ,van persie played a lot less game’s than fabregas

  • 138. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:06 pm

135; Diaby went off and so did we! Deffo effected the game in the chavs favour.

  • 139. Romford Pele  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:07 pm

Diaby is not a replacement for Gilberto - he’s an atatcking player not a defensive one

  • 140. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:08 pm

WHY THE HELLL DO WE WANT DIARRA
we have fabregas denilson diaby and gilberto and even after that there is flamini and song (NOT SAYING THERE GOOD BUT THEY’RE THERE) and hopefuly merida sometime in the next 2 seasons.

  • 141. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:09 pm

We’re signing Diarra coz we are sooo painfully short of right backs.

  • 142. davey b  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:09 pm

    139. Romford Pele | July 30th, 2007 at 1:07 pm

with all due respect bud no one has said he is

  • 143. Gunner8  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:10 pm

Wow, that vPersie goal was stunning the way he motored around Eboue and then looked like he was marshaling the attack with his arm while shooting with his right, fucking breathtaking and does remind me a bit of DB’s calm and coolness in tight spaces (like me with Asian chicks).

Hleb not only has grown the balls to shoot, but when it was parried he went back for the rebound that;s what is important in my eyes… …it was a friendly and he could have thought, “oh well!”
but he didn’t and was rewarded with a goal and will get more confidance to shoot. As for his positioning, how do you fit, Fabregas, Hleb and Rosicky in one position it is a big dilema but a great one to have!

    someone on the gunnerblog mentioned last week that AW playing Randall on the left is a clear indication that he intended to sign someone and was playing a left sided player… …after playing Gibbs there it looks even more like the said gunnerblogist was correct, Stand up whoever you are {APPLAUSE}

  • 144. davey b  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:10 pm

more like cause he’s french eh Geeekov

  • 145. TH14 aka Fab4  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:11 pm

Sammuel, i know you wern’t suggesting that we should sign Robben but he would be a good player for us if we could mannage to get him the chances are 1/100, though just imagine
    ___________Lehmann
    Sagna___Toure___Gallas___Clichy
    ___________Gilberto
    _____Fabregas___Rosicky
    ____R.V.P.__________Robben
    __________Adebayor
    Lethal!
Though Robben is virtually impossible i hope we play that Formation this season with Rosicky to the left of adebayor and Diaby beside Fabregas.

  • 146. truegooner17  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:12 pm

ERM HE IS A CENTRAL DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER
how can we want another right back when we just signed sagna and we have eboue and hoyte already

  • 147. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:13 pm

Maybe the Diarra things a smoke screen as Wenger is really going for the snide twat that is Robben.

  • 148. Samuel  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:13 pm

Regarding Diarra… On one hand, Arsene has a good touch when it comes to out-of-favour Frenchman with potential doesn’t he? On the other, he really isn’t needed at central midfield or right back. They really are the most two secure places on our field. Fucking buy a winger or a striker or a centre back already.

  • 149. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:14 pm

146; ERM, he can play RB, it was what is known in the trade as a piss take.

  • 150. Bergkamp  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:14 pm

145- Ade? No way in hell. RvP and Walcott on the right

  • 151. Samuel  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:17 pm

I don’t see how Joe Cole fits into Chelsea’s side next year. Not that we already have enough either 1) Ex-Chelsea smug cunts or 2) Glass ankled players on the left. Still wouldn’t mind him though.

  • 152. Gunner8  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:17 pm

Da Geekov, I am with you .131

Last Season Gallas gave up so many goals by not winning headers… …he can’t seem to handle them

I also think Gallas Senderos/Djourou, Toure Senderos/Djourou is the way to go FFS Senderos helped Lehmann keep cleansheets against Real, Juve, and Villareal, while bignobend sol and his arse chum cuntley did what exactly, everybody slates Big Phil because Drogba manhandles him, so have toure man mark him and stick Phil on Sheva

whatever the small fee, Arsenal must get at least 25% of the sell on

  • 153. Samuel  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:19 pm

Does anyone get that strange feeling that our squad is the only squad in the world that is too full and yet too small at the same time? We have like 4 players competeting for every position (ok, 2 for left back but with like 5 who could cover and a winger yet to be bought) and it makes my head hurt thinking about it some times. Diarra would annoy me more than anything.

  • 154. aka TH14  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:20 pm

where the fuck does it say that we’ve bought robben,

  • 155. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:20 pm

Left backs; Clichy, Traore, Gallas, Hoyte, Sagna!!!

  • 156. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:21 pm

Right backs; Sagna, Eboue, Hoyte, Gallas, Flamini, Kolo (at a push!)

  • 157. DelaneyJae  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:22 pm

If Arsene signs Diarra it must mean that Eboue is officially a winger from now on and the right back spot will be either Sagna or Diarra, with Diarra possible at central midfield as well. But.. Still makes no darn sense in my head.

  • 158. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:23 pm

This Diarra transfer talk is preposterous, poppy cock, pie in the sky talk.

  • 159. Gunner8  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:23 pm

Erm does anyone realize how much vanPersie and Robben hate each other?

Well it is a fuckload, why would AW want to bring him in as talanted as the 47 year old player is, he won’t be joining us.

The quiet one is Robinho, hmmmmmmmm no mention of him lately could Athletico be a ruse to get him from real, rumour rumour rumour

  • 160. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:24 pm

Samuel. The squad may haev players that can play in each position and therefoer cover each other - but there is a hell of a lot of games in a full season.

I presume that your best season, would see us winning all 4 competitions.

Thats something like 65-70 games a season.

Our first 11 is great. Our squad is not.

We need to get players in to account for injuries.

  • 161. Samuel  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:24 pm

DelaneyJae: I think it is pretty much accepted that Eboue is a winger now. Problem is I think Hoyte and Song are both better than Diarra at either job he would do. Or Flamini who could do either.

  • 162. Gunner8  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:25 pm

    9 MILLION EUROS FOR REYES!!!!!!!!

That amounts to less than £7M!!!!!!

That’s a loss of TEN FUCKING MILLION POUNDS!!!

    WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUCK??!!!!

Where else in the world can you buy a winger of Reyes’ quality for £7M??? I don’t care if he wants to leave or not, that fee is criminal. It’s not as if his contract is up at the end of the season - far from it. Reyes has a contract with Arsenal until 2010.

We should have (and could have IMO) got at the very least £20M for Henry. Instead we sell him for £16M.

We could have got £5.5M for Freddie from Fiorentina or £6M from Man City. Instead we sell him for half that amount at £3M.

Now we’re selling Reyes for a pittance just to facilitate his desire to live and play in a country that doesn’t “always rain”?? Are we just a bunch of fucking mugs or summat??

FUCK that shit. Even at the originally “un-negotiable” £10M, we’re still losing 7. But it’s better than losing fucking 10!

Not great business acumen from a club supposedly “strapped for cash”. Can’t be that skint if we can slash our prices like the Harrods sale.

“Roll up, roll up, roll up - come and get your Arsenal player! 80% off, everything - yes, EVERYTHING must go! We’ve got the Barcelona nursery arriving and it’s going to get a bit over-crowded in Papa Wenger’s footballing crèche.”

  • 166. Dick (aka Willy)  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:26 pm

Oh, and a word on Diarra:

    He ain’t coming.

  • 167. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:27 pm

    Dick.

I agree its a huge loss and should never have happened.

I can only presume that Arsenal have weighed up a quick sale vs a drawn out saga that would detract from the forthcoming premiership campaign and decided that they would prefer to end this sooner rather than let it drag into the start of the season.

  • 168. TH14 aka Fab4  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:27 pm

Saying we don’t need Diarra urgently why don’t we wait until January and sign him on the Bosman ruling?

  • 169. DelaneyJae  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:29 pm

    161. Samuel
I’m not with you on that one. In my opinion Diarra is better than Song and perhaps Hoyte as well.. Let’s just hope it’s a rumour cause we sure don’t need him..

And as for wingers Arsene probably goes for someone less known such as Yattara or someone even more weirder..

  • 170. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:29 pm

    Dick (chill the f*ck out)

We paid £10 mill, not £17M. It is still a piss take mind as £10M should be the minimum we sell for. Hell, the guys got anothwer 4 years on his contract, we need to show some balls, huge ones too. Play hardballs and wait, just, wait, till the Gypsy goes crakcers with the worry of it all and then loan him to Shaktar Donestk.

  • 171. Ash  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

Very impressed with our team yesterday and like Fabregas said you could see we are already a better team than last season. Eboue looks a real option in midfield, he’s not as good as Hleb playing in tight areas but when he’s on the run he is unstopabble and his speed is great on the counter. Lets see how he plays in Amsterdam

I dont think Eduardo is strong enough to play on the flanks, Rosicky can play there but I feel that another good signing and this team can go places. Ribery would have been perfect. It looks like someone is on the way I just hope its not Modric

Its good to see Wenger trying different things, Sagna is very very solid

  • 172. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

Dick - from your ranting I thought the deal had been struck.

I can’t find it anywhere where it says we have sold reyes yet.

Geekov - I thought we signed reyes for 17.5m (or did we pay 10m then the rest was to be paid later and because he didnt settle we didnt pay the rest or what?)

  • 173. Samuel  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

Gunner8: I said we should get someone who plays like him and now people are professing that he is in our squad! Madness, I say! Madness!
TopCat: Yes, that is exactly what I mean! And I do think that if our entire first team squad is fit and plays all season it is good enough. But we know it’s wishful thinking and we know the ANC is a couple months away, so we need more great players! Not just squad players either, so fuck Diarra. Eduardo, Fabianski and Sagna were bought as squad players. Now we need someone (or some players) who can cover many criteria: to inspire a winning mentality, play beautifully, cover many positions (we will still be a small side reliant on inter changability), to fit straight in and not to be a Reyes-esque cunt.

  • 174. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:32 pm

    TC; 172, thats a yes

  • 175. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

We paid between £7M _ £10M for the git, eventually rising to £17M, IF we won the champions league, world series and the Tiddlywinks masters.

  • 176. gooner  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

it wont happen, the chavs wont sell to us

  • 177. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:34 pm

so fuck Diarra. Eduardo, Fabianski and Sagna were bought as squad players.

I don’t agree that Sagna and Eduardo were bought just as squad players - and we have not signed Diarra.

Rafael Van D Vaart / Wesley Sneijder / etc are left footed midfielders who can also drift in when needed.

I would love to see either of them at Arsenal.

  • 178. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:35 pm

Sagna looks like he may well be our 1st choice RB.

  • 179. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

    175.

So it looks like we paid 7-10m and are getting 7m. Not too bad.

Dick…looking at the players you list.

Henry - signed for 11.5m - we got years and years of great football out of him, then sold him for 16.5m - a profit of 5m

Freddie - signed for 2.5m - we got years and years of great football out of him, then sold him for 3.5m - a profit of 2.5m

So its not so fucking bad is it?

  • 180. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

I meant a profit of 1m on freddie!

  • 181. DelaneyJae  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

I agree Geekov. He didn’t look good in the first game, but maybe I was expecting too much. He looks really solid defensively and is showed yesterday that he has some attacking skills as well..

  • 182. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

We got too many fancy technical not too direct players like, er, Van der vaart, TC. Now, desisit with this nonsense man.

We need dead hard bastards who eat babies for breakfast and would kill their grannies to score a goal.

  • 183. TH14 aka Fab4  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

Rafael Van D Vaart is mainly a CAM but he can be adopted to LWM like Rosicky.

  • 184. ron  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:39 pm

Well, I’m not sure about his eating habits, but Pedersen is direct, proven and affordable (£8m),

  • 188. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:43 pm

If we signed Anelka and Pedersen, I’d be happy. But I’d be happy regardless due to the pills I’m popping.

    WooooHoooo! The colours man.

  • 189. Dick (aka Willy)  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:43 pm

Yeah, but TOPCAT, we got Lehmann on a free. Does that mean we should be happy if we sold him for a quid??

Henry is the best striker in the world - no contest. These days, the best striker in the world does not cost £16M, I don’t care how much we bought him for.

  • 190. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:43 pm

    Pedersen?

Hardly a “dead hard bastards who eats babies for breakfast and would kill their grannies to score a goal”

  • 191. Samuel  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:43 pm

Arsenal’s Jose Reyes says he is close to clinching a permanent move to Spain.
Atletico Madrid are favourites to sign the 23-year-old winger for a reported £6m fee after Real Madrid apparently refused to offer more than £4m.

He was on loan at Real last season and told Spanish TV station La Sexta: “I’m delighted to be staying in Madrid.”

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger confirmed Reyes would not be returning to the club and added that an announcement on his future was expected “shortly”.

Reyes was close to joining Atletico last summer, signing a pre-contract agreement with the Rojiblancos before opting to join city rivals Real on loan.

However, he now appears set to take Atletico’s summer spending to nearly £50m.

“I really hope that it will be resolved in the coming hours,” said Reyes, who cost Arsenal £10.5m when he arrived from Sevilla in 2004.

  • 196. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:46 pm

    Dick.

If you read my post I do agree with you that a loss is unnaceptable - before going on to offer a suggestion as to why Arsenal may go for a quick sale.

I guess I am saying that for the years of service we got from these players (freddie/henry) - and then to sell them for a profit when the general concensus is that they can no longer be the player they once were, isnt terrible business.

  • 197. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:46 pm

  • 207. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

Listenening to Gorgeous George yesterday, he seemed to think letting henry & Freddie go was good business as he felt that we’ve seen the best of both of them.

Seeing as how he could be pretty frugal and knows a bit about the game, then I would give some clout to the Big Mans comments on the issue.

  • 208. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

    206.

    Malouda is pretty hard.

  • 209. Dick (aka Willy)  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

    Fair enough, TOPCAT.

Hopefully the club than pool those pittances together and buy a winger.

I quite liked Joaquin - and he looked good for Valencia yesterday. I’ve always rated him, and he doesn’t seem to lazy either (as is often the case with most wingers, i.e. Quaresma).

    SWP is the best option.

  • 210. Columbo Mavis  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:52 pm

Freddie wasn’t bad business - past his best (some would say well past) and £70k a week off the wage bill. I’m with Willy on the Henry transfer though. Barca would have paid £40mill + for him just 12 months ago. Has his stock really fallen that much in what was mainly an injury ravaged season?
I’m afraid to say he still has at least 2-3 years left in him as a top drawer striker and we’re gonna be made to look like mugs when he starts banging in the goals for Barca.
You can take the optimistic viewpoint that we made profit, plus 9 years service, but the fact is, he’s worth a lot more than £16m and had 3 years left on his contract.
Wenger’s well known for not letting sentiment cloud his judgement, but on this one I think it did. Henry came to him pleading to let him go and Wenger did just that… Presuming that he managed to negotiate the fee up a bit to the £16 mill, how much was the original bid from Barca?!?

  • 211. DelaneyJae  |  July 30th, 2007 at 1:52 pm

Sorry TC, I don’t drink and don’t encourage others to do so :)

We DO need hard bastards, but probably NOT on the wings!!!

We are a bit too nice.

Gilberto & Cesc (unless lamprds about!) = nice

Rosicky & Hleb = Way too bleedin nice.

  • 220. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 2:00 pm

    Dick/Mavis.

Im happy to concede that Henry was sold for a fair bit less than his actual value.

It does seem that upon learning that Henry’s marriage had broken down and he was desperate to leave England, Wenger sat down with the player he had brought to the club as a boy of 22, turned into one of the biggest stars in world football, watched become Arsenals all time record goal scorer and achieved 2 doubles with (and many will say becuase of) and showed compassion and allowed the player to leave for a reduced price.

Im not saying I agree with it - but I can see why it happened - thats all.

  • 221. arnold  |  July 30th, 2007 at 2:02 pm

  • 223. Dick (aka Willy)  |  July 30th, 2007 at 2:05 pm

    GEEKOV —

slightly disagree with your last post, but only slightly:

There’s nothing nice about Gallas (don’t know if you saw him winding up Materazzi before the start of the 2nd half) - he’s a nutbag.

There’s nothing nice about Cesc, he’s a jumped-up little shit - but thankfully to our benefit.

We also have RVP, who came to Arsenal with a reputation for being a tad aggressive and card-happy - tho Wenger seems to have tamed him somewhat.

    Diaby also looks a double-hard bastard…

HOWEVER, I do agree we could have benefited from someone like Ribery or Malouda who can play wide but can also look after themselves and throw it about a bit.

The only thing is, who else is available who could give us that extra bite AND add something to the team??

Should have kept Vieira and Lauren.

  • 224. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 2:07 pm

    Robben

    or Ronaldo?

Two years’ ago I would have said Robben, without question. Last year I’d have said Ronaldo. But this could be RVP’s year…..

  • 236. Gelbs  |  July 30th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

Eboue and Sagna were both very good yesterday. First time at the Emirates and fantastic stadium also. Gibbs had a good game as well on the left wing. Good performance as well. Particularly to come from a goal behind latish in the game. Adriano looks a big fucker as well lol. Think we can get use to seeing Eboue on the right wing next season along with Sagna at full back. But we still need a winger who can play left and/or right. Good atmosphere as well. Felt more like a Gooner at once. Been awhile lol.

  • 237. Gelbs  |  July 30th, 2007 at 2:47 pm

Quality goal from RVP as well. Looked even better in the replay as you could see more.

  • 238. Dick (aka Willy)  |  July 30th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

    TOPCAT —

POST 225 WAS NOT ME. I think it’s that CUNT Marcus again. You’re right, I wouldn’t talk to you like that - or most other people for that matter. Unless their name’s Marcus. Then I’ll tell them what a FUCKING CUNT THEY ARE! FUCK OFF MARCUS!!!!!! GO BACK TO THE JOB CENTRE YOU SCAB.

As for you point re: Vieira and Lauren - okay, we’ve moved on… but have we? So we’ve got Eboue and now with LaSagna also providing competition and/or other options on the right, so yes, we can maybe forget about Lauren (even though he could play in midfield too and would have been useful last season). But have we ever truly replaced Vieira?? Short answer: no. Cesc is a different player. Different as in better? Different as in worse? Time will tell. But without going over old ground, fans crave for past players when they can see holes that need plugging in their current team. And Geekov’s right - we do need a bit more out-and-out fight. All top teams have it. Terry at Chavs. Gerrard at Libelpool. Gattuso at Milan. etc, etc, etc. That’s all I’m trying to say.
I’m hoping Diaby will fill this void.

    “227. lionar | July 30th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Dick, what are you currently happy about in the Arsenal set up right now?”

I’m happy that Wenger is still at the club and looks set to stay.
I’m happy that Diaby, Denilson, Djourou, Bendtner and all the other developing/fringe players from last season are showing improvements.
I’m happy that we showed great fight against Inter even after going a goal down.
I’m happy that the team spirit does indeed seem high despite the sale of two genuine Arsenal legends.

On the other side of the coin:

I’m not happy that we sold Henry - wife troubles or not.
I’m (sort of) not happy that we sold Ljungberg - still had fight and experience to offer.
I’m not happy that we haven’t signed a world-class winger.
I’m not happy that we haven’t signed Anelka, who would be perfect for us, or with Wenger as he persists with this bullshit game of chess with not just the media but also the fans.
And I’m not happy that when I bought a bottle of water at our stadium this weekend they wouldn’t give me the bottle cap in case I threw it at Materazzi.

Other than that, everything is hunky dorey.

  • 239. Geekov  |  July 30th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

  • 241. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 2:58 pm

Sorry for the short reply Dick, but when I said move on, I meant it more as a “they have left and are never coming back so it seems pointless to me to carry on talking about them in the context of whether we should or should not have sold them”.

You can point to the Vieira sized hole, but that is saying there is one solution for the problem and that is it.

There are many different solutions depending on the direction we want to go.

Diaby is what 21 now? Vieira was 23 when we got him - so already has 2 years of growing before comparisons can be made.

Freddie - had to go. He was never going to get a game ahead of eboue/theo/rocisky, etc…. why pay him 70k a week to play the odd carling cup game?

Its 1st August in 2 days - and still another 2 weeks or more until the season starts.

If we have brought no one in in a weeks time, then I will be a little pissed. Lets hope we do….

    237. Gelbs | July 30th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Quality goal from RVP as well. Looked even better in the replay as you could see more.

    - - -

    Is that really Gelbs?

You sound unusually uplifting in your posts!

  • 243. Columbo Mavis  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:00 pm

TC - There’s no way that’s Gelbs. Even if it was his 1st visit to the Grove, he’s never going to admit it on here!

  • 244. TeamSpirit  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

    Hello everyone…

I hope people are in a slightly happier mood after the weekend?

  • 245. Gelbs  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

Was me. Credit where credits due. Still believe we have big problems, but as I said, I’ll praise the team when need be. And yesterday’s performance was good. Inter were pretty shit and hardly had a shot on goal apart from the goal. Which Lehmann I reckoned could of saved it.

  • 246. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

    243.

Mavis is that really you? hehe

Im getting quite good at spotting the fakes.

Why am I the only fucker going to the LG tourament?

Easy Jet/Ryanair to amsterdam - 30 quid max
    Hostel - 25 quid a night max
ticket for the sat 4th aug - 25 quid from arsenal

80 odd quid + beer money.

    Come on.

  • 247. Garfield  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:08 pm

ron your mum is a slut.

TC I apologize for the posting earlier but it was the serial ID thief on, acting like a cunt again cos his mum forgot to give him his does of minge today. Wanker….

    Henry sale = fucking giveaway.

I agree with Dick. Many things are run well at this club but recently there have been a fuck of a lot of bloopers with us giving away players like sweets. Quite why Thiery Henry left for 16m is beyond me. Marriage breakdown or not. He had 4 years left on his deal and we basically paid to get him back to full fitness.

As for Reyes? A guy with a contract till 2011 sold for 7 million.

    Choice….

P.S ron. Your mum is a slag.

  • 248. Garfield  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:10 pm

And I hope some of you will lay off Gelbs a little now too. You have just seen him praise the team unconditionally. Accept the rough with the smooth. It can’t all be rose-tinted the whole time…

  • 254. Garfield  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

TC, for a start: do you need to be so offensive when you ask questions? I read this forum often and my usual name is ‘John’. But since there are 300 others of them I have changed my user name.
Good to know TC that after spending a lifetime preachng to the ‘bedwetters’ you yourself proceed to act like a complete and utter cunt though.

    Nice one. Continue please…

  • 255. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

    Garfield,

Sorry If I offended you - I really didn’t mean to.

I guess I am very blunt sometimes - and thick skinned. So guess I talk to people the way I get spoken to at work, around me mates etc - when I speak to relative strangers, it can take them a while to get used to it.

So, again, sorry if I haev fucked you and anyone else off - not intentional.

  • 256. lionar  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

Ok cool Dick, so in short you just want another winger? dnt you think Diaby can provide the aggression you speak of? I think the aggression is a team thing which will develope/ is well on its way to developing fully. Its that feeling that somebodyies always got your back, I remember reading something from Bergkamp about his time at Arsenal and talking about how at Inter he had been constantly mocked and bullied, then in the summer he joined we had a friendly with Inter and Adams stood up for him against some of the Inter players.
I think thats developing a clasic example is Gallas coming all the way up to check on Eboue during one of his many ahem ‘tumbles’ or young Gibbs running from the left wing to slide into Materatzi in retrubution. Were def making progress.

  • 257. Dick (aka Willy)  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

    lionar

can you please shut the fuck off this sit your pissing me off

  • 258. Romford Pele  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

Reyes leaving for less than 10 mil does not = the club being run badly.

Noone wants the fucker and he doesnt want to come back here so we need to get rid of him, and other clubs know that - our negotiating position is shit so we’ll get fleeced.

  • 259. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

    interesting point lionar.

hard men in football are not necessarily the way forward.

I mean, you want players with fight and aggression, but robbie savage is a good example of someone having all the aggression in the world but actually being detremental to the good of the team.

The players need to fight for one another - and for that to happen we need a sense of family - these guys are mostly young, with a few older heads and younger players have all the fight in the world - so good things may well come of it.

  • 260. TeamSpirit  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

All the signes from the weekend are obviously positive.

I am glad that we can only improve foorm here…

    RVP GOAL IS CLASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

  • 262. Columbo Mavis  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

TC - yeah, that was me, so you’re not that good at spotting fakes (unless you were being your usual ironic self)!

Glad to see Gelbs can be positive. Although I would say that although Inter were poor, that shouldn’t detract from a lot of positives coming from the game.
I was particularly impressed with Eboue on the right mid.. very direct. Their players were shitting themselves everytime he ran at them. Interesting to see how that transfers to more pacey full backs in the Premier League though..

  • 263. lionar  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

Yup thats how Id look at it, its like any organisation only more so there has to be a feeling of togetherness and I see that developing very nicely. Dick Im pretty sure thats not really you.

  • 264. lionar  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:39 pm

Also if you look at even some of the so called ‘enforcers’ in the game the most effective ones are so effective because theyr part of a unit and theyr made to feel pride/protective towards thyeyr club/teammates. I think we have that more than any of the other top four teams at Arsenal and that dynamic shouldnt be underestimated, its part of what makes this club so special and some times we all take it for granted but not everybody has that.

  • 265. TopCat.  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Arsenal - their whole is greater than the sum of their parts.

  • 266. Romford Pele  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:44 pm

arsenal’s strength is moving the ball about faster and with greater precision than our opposition. The way to beat teams is to outplay them, not to sign Joey barton

    It could be Fu - he’s a total ring-piece.

  • 271. lionar  |  July 30th, 2007 at 3:55 pm

Dick, its clear who ever wrote this has issues.
So Diara huh? weird one. Id love to see a winger come in somebody who could really change the course of a game, I dnt care how old he is just how good he is I mean Messi is a good example of this, still we shall see.

    Gunners hoping for Silva lining
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed Croatia striker Eduardo da Silva will return to Dinamo Zagreb if he does not get a work permit.

The 24-year-old moved to the Emirates Stadium earlier this month for an undisclosed fee and made his debut in a pre-season friendly against Turkish side Genclerbirligi.

However, he has been unable to feature in Arsenal’s Emirates Cup games against Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan because he is still waiting for his work permit application to be approved.

The Brazilian-born hitman has an appeal with the Home Office on August 2 and Wenger insists that should that appeal fail, Eduardo will return to Croatia.

“We sign our contracts subject to work permits, so we have not been negligent,” Wenger told the club’s official website.

“If the work permit does not happen, we are not in a position where we are obliged to keep the player.”

  • 305. Garfield  |  July 30th, 2007 at 4:47 pm

No hard feelings then TC we are all Gooners here. We have a good team. I have spent all summer really frustrated with AW and cussing him at times, especially over Henry sale, Reyes and our shite season.
But all it took for me to realize why I love this club and Wenger was so much was a rip down to our beautiful stadium, to watch football even more beautiful and breathtaking. Not much of the team’s individuals excite me but RVP certainly does (if and when fit)!
By the way where are our resident top philosophers Respects Highbury and Amos gone? How about Dutchy?

  • 306. puzzled  |  July 30th, 2007 at 4:49 pm

Help me out here guys why is it that we never played valencia?

  • 307. Garfield  |  July 30th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

I repeat though: we NEED at least 2 top-drawer signings to truly compete in CL and Europe. We already signed squad players in Sagna, Wookash and the soon-to-be-deported Eduardo! What we need now are players that could literally walk straight into the first-team and command a starting birth. Peeps want a mean motherfucker?
He’s scummy, dirty and evil but Ruud Van Nistelrooy would be fucking SICK at Arsenal. Could it happen though? No chance cos a) AW thinks he’s a scummy cunt b) he IS a cunt Madrid would never sell to us. And to think he cost Real less than Wiltord… He would score a sackful for Arse though. I liked Simao but now gone. Van der Vaart excites me. Not genuine wide-man I suppose so, perhaps Robinho (never happen) or Diego from Werder Bremen. Shame we missed out on Di Maria. No idea how we fucked that one up!
Quaresma I like but dunno if he would adapt to PL.
Ribery was the one that got away. An ugly mean motherfucker on the wing he woulda been for us…

  • 309. Cuzzy  |  July 30th, 2007 at 5:04 pm

i havent posted on here for a while (too many idiots).
But i have to say that Van P goal was some thing else!! The way he suckered the defender and sold him the dummy was pure class.
I read somewhere that henry said that he had played with Bergy and Zinadine and he reackons the young Van P is up there with them. he has a lot to prove to get to their level but is very very special and maybe needs the xtra resposibility to bring the best outta him.
I think we gonna have a good season - i even said we would win the league in previous post(yeah im proud of my rose tinted glasses). Good to see the players believe in themselves and enjoy working for each other. shame about some fans

I still think we will get robiniho as wenger has bid 2wice for him - once b4 he joined real (he would have earned more with us but chose real!).

  • 310. Cuzzy  |  July 30th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

Help me out here guys why is it that we never played valencia?
    Anyone

  • 337. Dick (aka Willy)  |  July 30th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

    PUZZLED —

two reasons we didn’t play Valencai:

    1) It was always meant to be a 2-day tournament meaning 2 games in 2 days was bad enough, let alone 3.

    2) Hamburg were originally meant to take part in the tournament but pulled out with a month to go and were replaced by Valencia. As we’d already played Hamburg twice last season I’d imagine Wenger didn’t see much value in facing a side we’d already beaten twice last year. When Hamburg withdrew and Valencia came in, it was too late, Arsenal’s fixtures against PSG and Inter had already been decided.

i have a question: i’m an islington resident and want to put my name down for a couple of season tickets at the grove. Does the fact that i live in islington make ny difference to my hope of getting the tickets??

I go to the gym for a couple of hours and when I return I see TC and Geekov claiming I shoot PCP in my eyeballs and what not. What has become of this world?

I took a look at Skysports and saw: 1. Eidur Godjohnsen might go to West Ham and 2. Lassana Diarra is coming to Arsenal. Does that make any sense? I would say that we could use Godjohnson…an excellent back up across the front line, but Diarra? Don’t we already have six central midfielders (Cesc, Gilberto, Diaby, Rosicky, Hleb, Flamini, Denilson…oh, and Song)?

BTW, Godhjohnson would not be my first choice; I would prefer a winger/forward in the Reyes mold. I really think he fucked things up for Wenger when he decided that he HAD to leave.

Can Spuds afford not to grab a Champions League spot next season after their massive investment? I don’t think so.

  • 346. Cuzzy  |  July 30th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

dave 345, ill lower my standards to converse with you. as we all know im the most intelligent person on here and anyone with an opinion different from mine is just like ive stated earlier, an idiot. well now dave lets see, can spurs afford not grab a champions league spot, well dave i disagree as i dont think it will make any diference to them because they may be a team followed by twats like yourself dave because you have a different opinion than me, but dave my friend theres lots of money in the possesion of twats, just look at chelsea for example, so dave we can assume, because i said so that it will make no difference
