As the final tome in the Harry Potter series is leaked throughout the web, viewers of ArsenalTVonline will yesterday have caught an advanced glimpse of our own boy wonder, Theo Walcott, firing on all cylinders.  The teenager scored the second and layed on the first for Robin van Persie in an impressive 3-0 victory.

The players who had been involved in International fixtures returned to the squad yesterday, most prominently in the case of Bacary Sagna, who started at right-back.  Indeed, he was the only change from the game at Barnet.

It was a Sagna through-ball that set Walcott away to cross for Robin van Persie to tap in the opener.  Then in the second half, an Adebayor pass was dummied by the Dutchman, and Walcott produced an accomplished finish.

A third was added late on, when more good work from Adebayor culminated in him laying the ball of for Robin van Persie to score with his right foot, of all things.

With twenty minutes to go, a flurry of substitutions saw Eduardo make his debut, and gave Niklas Bendtner his first Arsenal appearance in over a year.  There’s a match report here and all the goals are viewable here.

It’s always hard to guage performances in friendlies, but Eduardo looked lively and showed unsurprisingly good technique.  Sagna seemed solid enough at right-back but wasn’t really tested, and Adebayor and Van Persie combined well - we’ll need them to if we’re to have any success this season.

Afterwards Arsene denied he held any interest in signing Nicolas Anelka, and said the purchase of Eduardo meant that no more strikers would be coming in.  Annoyingly, he wasn’t asked about whether or not he might pursue a wide midfielder.  Although this interview with Eduardo intimates that he can play wide, I suspect he means in a 4-3-3 rather than a 4-4-2.

Theo Walcott showed glimpses of his potential yesterday, but I personally don’t believe he has the maturity to hold that position all season long.  Neither do I believe Alex Hleb or Freddie Ljungberg to be penetrative enough.  I don’t mind if we bring in someone on the right, or shift Rosicky out there and sign another left-sided player.  It feels like we’re one player short of a very solid squad, and I hope Arsene ammends this before the season starts.

Well, at least we’ve signed someone: 17-year-old Brazilian (yes, a proper one - no Broatian or Crazilian splices here) left-back/winger/striker called Pedro, who was presented at Salamanca yesterday.  They were the club who took Carlos Vela on loan last year, and it seems that they might become quite a useful “parking” club whilst we wait for South American youngsters to become eligible.  Although it’s as yet unconfirmed, Pedro could be joined by Angel Di María, a 19-year old Argentinian midfielder who is obviously a bit special.

ps. I like the white kit.  Sue me.

UPDATE 9.33am: according to this Swedish newspaper and some people who understand Swedish, Freddie is staying.  My dreams of a new winger are slowly dying.

    Wet, soggy, slightly terrified, morning all!

    Well, did anyone else have the most horrendous thunder storm? it made the glass in the windows vibrate, enough rain fell in ten minutes to leave our house with a three sided moat and this morning all the main roads were closed due to floods and fallen trees….

    as a result of the above, I didn’t know last night’s result til just now…a comfy win and some promising work from the forwards sounds good to me!

    Hello all.

    I read on the side of my Crunchy Nut cornflakes packet this morning a little nugget of a quote from Ian Wright stating that it’s a “scientific fact that people who don’t eat breakfast in the morning are generally fatter than people that do.” Or something along those lines. Consequentially, I promptly put the packet back in the cupboard and went to work on an empty stomach, just to defy the sp*rs supporting twat.
    I now have hunger pangs (are they the same as hunger pains, just spelt differently?), but at least I’ve kept my diginity!

    From what i know if you want to come into this country from outside the EU you either a: have to show that have postive skills which can help the country or b: that your life is in danger if you remain in your home country. Sending the players to Spain will mean that after three years they can apply for a Spanish passport and so would be free to travel and work where ever in the EU.

    Nice run out game by all accounts. Nice to see Ade and VanP combining up front. I hope Theo can hit a bit of for this season. I dont expect him to start all the time but lets hope he gives the boss a hard time leaving him out. Theos own targets for the season seem reasonable and achievable. Anyone see the game in full ?

    As for breakfast, i find large amounts of tea can usually see you through to lunchtime, but personally i prefer 2 sausages, 2 slices of toast, some bacon and hash brown, washed down by tea. That really gets you through till lunch ;-)

    There are two logical routes to take; 1 is the attacking left midfield option, 2 is an older striker as a temporary stopgap. The first is more likely, as even older strikers are at a premium… and those on free’s are usually genuinely past it cos their last club would surely have rather sold them for whatever they could get.

    rural if u eat breakfast then your metabolism burns food quicker throughout the day, giving u more energy

    if u dont, then any food u eat later in the day will not digested as well, i.e u will have less energy & ur meta will not digest food as well, i.e u will store fat

    With Walcott being so good last night and with set goals of 10 goals in 25 games, I think he could it and in style too.
    It would be fucking unlucky for us to have striker injury problems two years in a row. Of the past two years, surely we have been the worst affected and someone else has gotta get the bad luck this season?
    I think if you worked it out, we have a first team of about 20 players but they all play like 2 or 3 positions, so we have most of the pitch covered. We just need a left winger.

    Concerning Kroenke, all the bad points economically have been said about a hostile takeover but I think there will be a big knock off onto the team, especially the kids. If Kroenke was to, at first, throw his money about every man on the planet, what kind of incentive do the kids have if we are going to spend £21 million on a bench player? I’d prefer players who are going to want to try and show the world they can be the best, as opposed to those who have done well already and just need to get that paycheck every month.

    Exactly Samuel, I for one dnt understand why we need a new board, this one could do with some more proffessional personel, so if Kroenke was to have a capable representative on the board all good and well but I just dnt get the whole he will throw money at the club argument and I think Samuel brings up an excellent point, I mean the two new players weve signed are an excellent example!

    Assuming Kroenke buys Dein’s shares (why hasen’t he already?), why don’t the board offer him a kinda-high-but-not-too-high place on it (not to Dein though, we don’t want him back) and let him be mr. i-own-25% and he can take 25% worth of club as a big ol’ salary (the rest of the board do and not just their share of the profit). I’m sure there must be someone smart enough at Arsenal to explain this is the best and most logical conclusion for Arsenal, the board and Kroenke to succeed. He’s still make a ton of money post-Emirates debt.

    Personally I hate the white kit. Sure it looks ok, but thats not the point. Were Arsenal for Chrisakes. Our away kit was/is/and always effing should be yellow & blue. The fact that it now changes to every colour of the rainbow, every 2 seasons is complete shite. We seem to be selling our heritage for a quick buck.     Im quite happy with our little team of stars, imagine just as Rosicky is starting to get on a bit, we will have Maria/Merida two of world footballs bright future lights! AND we didnt have to pay an obsecene amount of money for them, unlike Manure and the Chavs and co were cutting out the middle clubs. Think about it when was the last time either of these clubs bought an amazing future talent early? we got fab when he was 16 ffs but do we get any praise for that oh no!     lionar, exactly. merida and anderson are basically the same, unproven in the premiership but both have the around the same ability to possibly be great in the future. however, if it goes tits up - merida will have cost 17.5 million (like the price of our whole youth team) less and it won’t be such a dissapointed and a waste.

    Sorry for the rant sometimes my frustration with the dark ones just spills out…I shall meditate on it.
    I think were going to be ok this season and by ok I mean challenging, we have a big enough squad, Im one of the very few who thinks Song will come good this season, hes had enough time to mature and he should have gained some much needed confidence from his time at Charlton. RVP will just be the DON and Ade will chip in Rosicky will finally show us what hes made of and Hleb will do much better with more confidence and a more stable backline behind him, lets not forget Diaby! we will be ok.

    The good doc, our third kit (blue and red) is supposedly for the champions league, the only place we may play barca (blue and red), we will resemble them when we play away games in which we need to play in our second kit.

    consistency is the main worry due to lack of lack of age =games theres no doubt arsenal are as good as anyone in england if not better on there day ,but can they sustain it over the coarse of the season i have a feeling arsenal will get lots of plaudits for playing brilliant football and pushing the top two and will probably upset them along the way ,which they ll get a lot of praise and pats on the back for but thats the only thing i can see us wiinning this year morale victorys because this side is not ready yet it will be another learning curve for a major push next year im afraid well thats just my opinion anyway

    davey b - i think our players will have learnt from last year not to only take the big games seriously. the only thing i am worried about consistancy-wise is the last quarter of the season. last time, (i know we were out of everything but) we still just gave up and started playing like it was a training session instead of a possible three points. if we are only fighting for 2nd by march, i want them to fight for 2nd still and not just be ok with a champions league place and more practice for the season after.

    Lionar - Bar a couple years and a little more experience Merida and Anderson are on par I say, but Merida only has to fight his way into the team, Anderson has to fight for a place against Giggs/Ronaldo AND prove his is worth 18 million! That’s a lot to ask an eighteen year old. When Cesc came in, Wenger could have easily gone, ok, he isn’t good enough yet and bought someone at January and no-one would have really minded. Merida will be in the same position.

    Consistency is the main worry for Arsenal due to the lack of experience. Ttheres no doubt Arsenal are as good as anyone in England, if not better on their day. However, can they sustain it over the entire season? I have a feeling arsenal will get lots of plaudits for playing brilliant football, even pushing the top two and will probably upset them along the way. Although as this side is not ready yet it may be another learning curve, before finally being ready for a major push next year.

    davey b maybe but also I think if you look at what we were missing last year it was a finsher, a classic goal poacher, weve signed one. The other thing we were missing is strangely enough a lack of fear, I dnt think we lost to so called ‘weaker’ teams cos we got bullied I think we got bullied cos we were too scared and then we lost. part of the reason for this has to be Henry and the sense that they had to live up to his standards, I think they need to create their own standards, they have a fresh chance and enough experience to do that this season, if they play to their ability

    Lionar, I also think its important how AW deals with the youngsters. Merida seems to be going down the same route as Cesc. Adapting to the English game out of the public eye, before being giving his chance.
    I fear that Anderson & Nani will enter the pressure pot that is Old Trafford and be expected to hit the ground running. Expectations will be high with those kinds of transfer fees. Anything less than good and the crowd will soon be baying. Reminds me of Kleberson a few years back.

    davey b - a year has been valuable i think. they learnt that they may have to take the cups more seriously for maybe a couple more years, they learnt that the bottom half teams are just as important as united and chelsea. Sagna/Eduardo/OtherSigning will offer huge possibilities and they can no longer rest on their Henry-coattails. Bar the ANC period, we have a huge squad (maybe not in the amount of players, but in the amount of positions that can be played very well) and if someone is not up to it, someone else will take their place until they can prove worthy.

    Spuds team is looking better, but they will never be able to match Arsenes Army, all their players are probably at the top of their potential, whereas alot of our players are only half way to their full potential, and we’re still better than them!

    There is alot to come from this team, especially with players like RvP, Rosicky, Fabregas, Adebayor, Walcott, Diaby, Denilson……
    The list just keeps going and going!!

    I think other teams will underestimate our strength in depth, maybe not upfront but in midfield, for example:

    If fabregas and Gilberto were injured, we’ve got Diaby and Denilson to fill, and more!

    In previous years sure, but last season I don’t think we got bullied. Games we lost and drew, we’d have 20/30 chances and they’d win because at just one point in the ninety minutes we’d lose our concentration and having 11 attackers battle it out with 11 defenders, there would be a big space behind us in which we’d forget halfway through a game that occasionally we’d have to defend as well as make chances. If we could get a more restrained back line (Toure-Gallas-Gilberto, the wing backs can still do their job) and more goals from the midfield (plus a fit Van Persie, Eduardo the poacher etc.), we could storm the premiership out of the starting gate.

    4-4-2 or 4-5-1 it is. You cannot play 4-3-3 with only 4 strikers in your team, especially when you know you will only have 3 at one point. I think all four will be rotated to games they suit, but Van Persie and Ade will be seen the most (discounting possible injuries). Also, Bendtner and Walcott for Carling Cup.

    Personally I think this is a fooking strong squad. The only thing missing is a lightning quick winger but I aint too fussed.     Goodplaya is quality, probably the best Arsenal site around. It’s balanced, rational, well-written and usually fairly thought-provoking. There aren’t many comments, though, so it’s less of a community. Eastlower and aculturedleftfoot are good. I liked Arsenal, wtf as well, but it isn’t as compelling now that anti has stopped posting.

    For non-Arsenal specific football, the Guardian blogs are pretty good, but it depends on the article. The comments are usually good, but it usually degenerates into an Arsenal/Liverpool slanging match. On the bright side, there’s less swearing and more complete sentences. I also like sportingo and footballingworld.

    I cant believe the walking corpse is staying at this club, while servants like Lauren, Pires, Edu etc are allowed to leave.

    Ljungberg is finished, he knows it and we know it - which is why we listened to offers for him. The only reasons he isnt going is cos no one decent wants him ( where are real ,barca, milan etc ) and cause he wants his testimonial dosh.

    If he had any self respect left he would leave, but no his ego wont let him and we will have a cripple in our squad this season because of his stubbornness.

    He’s been a good servant and has been a great player with vital goals in the past. Now though he cant even fucking run, in yesterdays game Traore at left back was doing his job for him and our striker Eduardo had to go left wing cos Ljungbergs legs couldnt get him there and he cant even go 3 games without an injury now.

    We cant be sentimental here, him staying will cost us the pacy wide player we all know we need, and for what 10 games a season at 70k a week ffs!

    We cant carry anyone this season yet we will be now with him, he wouldnt get close to the other top4 squads so why is he still with us - even as free transfer would save us his wages. If he loves the club as he claims then he should leave, as more fans will be more dissapointed if he stays than if he leaves and someone needs to break this to him.

    I also see that we arent gonna buy another striker, AW is taking a huge chance here though. We have one class striker in RVP, Bentner, Theo and Eduardo despite being talents havent scored a league goal between them yet. Lastly we have Adebayor, who will run all day but his job as a striker is goals - and his finishing is no better than a sunday league player ( missed another sitter yesterday, he’s out of his depth in the Premleague which is a shame as he has a great attititude ).

    Essentially we have to keep RVP fit and HOPE that Edurdo or Bentner come through as Theo will be a winger I think this year. We have the money and could have Martins for 13M only who along witha winger would complete the squad, but as usual we are taking the cheap option rather than bringing in proven quality.

    I am neither for or against this proposed takeover until I hear what he has to say and how he would structure the purchase etc. Its no surprise though that more and more people are leaning towards it, when you see the constant penny pinching and corner cutting that is now the norm for this club.

    Our defense looked poor against Genclerbirligi again, if it wasn’t for the great goalkeeping of Almunia and Fabianski we would have gone behind early in the game, they had something like three clear-cut chances. I’m a little bit worried about that, the opposition apparently finds it easy to create chances against us. The player material should be good as Toure and Gallas for example belong to the best defenders in the world but tactically there is much room for improvement. Wouldn’t mind if we sometimes stood a little bit deeper.

Kroenke has a much better and consistent his current track-record (Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche Colorado Rapids, St Louis Rams) is good and his previous record doesn’t suggest he starves his clubs of investments in players in favour of reaping enhanced profits. He seems very much a sports-loving person, whereas Ecclestone’s only incumbent ’sports’ interest (if you can even call F1 a sport) is in F1. What’s more, Hill-Wood has met with Kroenke and was impressed, whereas he’s yet to come out with the same observations about Ecclestone, and I doubt Hill-Wood will be too impressed with Ecclestone’s comments that they shouldn’t have let Dein go, regardless of whether it’s the truth.

    Shit darren bent n berbatov are combinin very well. Berbatov has jus scored. Bent is kinda impresive! Curently 2-1 to spurs. Basera 4rm chiefs is a realy classy left back.
