“Palacio” is actually Spanish for “entirely fictional”

Journalists are the laziest people. In my brief lifetime, I’ve worked in and around them, both on a national newspaper and a popular football magazine. I have never come across people more dedicated to doing absolutely nothing. That’s why we get on so well.
When I was at the newspaper, the sports journos would take three hour lunches, and get so drunk that the afternoon would be spent watching horse-racing and betting with their stationery as currency.
On the magazine, things took a turn for the surreal. Editors, writers, and designers fought it out in a game of “Office Polo”, riding unicycles and impossibly small bikes whilst brandishing hockey sticks. I kid you not.
So it was no surprise to me yesterday morning when I awoke to discover that The Sun had pinched a story from a little-known Boca Juniors blog and plonked it on their back page. Spectacular. Presumably it was 11pm, the game of Office Polo had gone into extra time, and they desperately needed something to sell a few papers. The Fake Sheikh was playing a blinder in goal, so they decided to let him be and run with the Palacio story.
And then The Daily Mail, that bastion of integrity, spied the story and nicked it for their own website, and the back page of their sister publication, The Evening Standard.
Late last night the Boca Juniors President came out and denied knowing anything about it. I could give you a link but seeing as it’s entirely in Spanish, it seems slightly pointless. And then the great conductor behind this orchestral lie revealed his genius. Though to be honest, what allowed him to succeed was approximately 10% his own ingenuity. The other 90% was made up by the complete idiocy of the press.
The Arsenal squad has headed out to Austria, and ANR say that Freddie Ljungberg stayed behind. To me, Arsene’s comments about Freddie being “90% likely to stay”, as opposed to absolutely certain, were an invitation to Fiorentina to up their bid. Perhaps they have now done so.
Finally, I can exclusively reveal that Arsenal have agreed a fee for Porto’s Lucho Gonzalez. He will fly in tomorrow for a medical. An insider at the club has faxed us through details of the transfer.
If that’s not on the back page of tomorrow’s Sun I’ll be pissed.

GS: It seems very odd to have a website dedicated to injuries. Will it cover other news as well? I understand trying to come from a different angle, but that one just seems like it can only bring depressing news. You or arseblogger can tell me if a player is injured or I can see on MOTD (or ITV’s cheap version this season) if someone else’s player limps off, I don’t think many people will actively seek a website like that out. However, it is written well and celebrates the people that saves the careers of players people love, so it can’t be a bad thing.

Naija: I believe that there is still a month a half left to go, and a month till the season starts. In the past month we have purchased three players. Chelsea, Barca, Liverpool, United and Real have pretty much finished up in the market. We still haven’t sold Reyes. We are not settled and ready for the next season, I believe this isn’t our squad for next season. As it stands, I believe this is a squad that can fight for second though.

Rodrigo Palacio’s agent has moved to dampen speculation of an imminent move to Arsenal for the Boca Juniors star.
Monday’s edition of The Sun claimed that The Gunners were on the brink of clinching a club record £15 million deal for the Argentina international, but that has come as something of a surprise to his agent, Roberto Depetri.
Palacio was reputedly due in London for a medical on Tuesday, but Depetri claims he has heard nothing from Arsenal, who have already reinforced their frontline with the signing of Eduardo da Silva this summer.
“The truth is the information surprised me,” Depetri told La Nacion. “There is nothing of anything.
“No intermediaries, or officials, have spoken with either me or Boca.”
Furthermore, a spokesman for the Argentinian giants has told news agency EFE that the club “has not received any contact from Arsenal or any other club.”

Frudicus, I agree I think were going to keep it very fluid. Im not so sure about Sagner being thrown in to the starting line up immediately though and I get the immpression that a lot of people do, dito for Eddy.
I also dnt agree with Rosicky/Gilberto/Fab as a midfield I think its too attacking a formation if you consider we will have 3 up fornt as well I think we might have Diaby/Flamini in there instead of Rosicky and he would be pushed up front further (Rosicky) anybody watch the Barnet match?

Watched vela against argentina the other night and he looked impressive, great pace and balance, as well as skill. He had one shot where the ball was played in to him at a high level, but he managed to control, turn and smashed his shot against the post. Reminded me of dogba. Manager was playing him on the left wing and he was switching to right now and then - could he be the answer to our width/wing problem? Stupid manager dragged him off with 20mins left, and mexico lost. Why do managers do that? do they think they are being clever by taking their best players off!
Anyway i hope wenger had someone watching this game, (there was a midfield player for argentina who was outstanding to) cos vela needs to come to us now - he looks the real deal. Fingers crossed the permit is sorted!

I honestly didn’t think that even the Sun, yes even the Sun, would be stupid enough to post something off a blog without knowing more about it. Some rumours could come from people with contacts in the game and contacts within Arsenal. Obviously, they are few and far between but it does happen. Thats how some rumours start. The thing is Adamski, as Arsenal fans we rarely (if ever) hear about a transfer before it’s officially announced. Wenger keeps his signings very close to his chest. Admittedly the Sagna one was being banded about, but only because the player, his agent and Auxerre all commented specifically that Arsenal were interested.
I’m sure when conducting transfer negotiations Arsenal request that the other parties involved keep quiet, hence the Eduardo one coming out of the blue. Generally though, it’s less likely that rumours about Arsenal transfers have any foundations to them, than any other club.

Well GS, This is always the second and las blog I look at every day… …not saying that it is not well written, but because Arseblog is always posted around 8:30ish in the morning and, thus is the most reliable for my fix(high or low), in the morning .
Sometimes you do an evening update post which is great but my advice were to improve the blog it would be to always have a morning post (whether you bring in other writers or not). People like Respects might comeback for an article? Little Dutch always liked this site and could also contribute?
As for the comments… ….perhaps have a comments section like the arses, where the ones who want to freechat can call 187th gun and stuff, while also having a comments on the article section for those who want to chat about football… …people who register their names G8, TopCat, Amos and Bloghead (even you my spud). Signup is open to everyone, so people couldn’t steal names and would be more about the relevant topic, or football.
That said, this is and always will be an excellent blog… …but you asked

I think Sunderland will do well. Roy Keane might be a crazy bastard, but he’s a brilliant manager. He’ll need to buy, though, and buy better than Kieran Richardson. Definitely stay up, I think top half, not sure about a Euro place. I’d like to see us loan him a few of our kids (esp. Merida) to toughen them up. It’ll be interesting to see how Anthony Stokes goes in the Premier League.

pretty much agree with you (I did give 2 points to SWP in comparison to Hleb because… well… Hleb is fucking turd, which maybe swayed the scores slightly) - but with regard Lennon vs Rosicky, my take on it is that you’re right; Rosicky is a much better all-round footballer, but I think that Lennon is a far more effective player. Rosicky doesn’t have his penetration or (as much) pace, IMO.
Do you think Eboue will start as RB next season? I’m hoping LaSagna gets the nod and Eboue replaces Hleb on the wing.

483 - Rosicky is pretty quick, will be more effective this season, still would put Rosicky ahead of lennon but i do see your point. With regards to eboue on the right (if we keep to the 442) i think he will be pretty good there actually, and from a defensive point, even better with two good tacklers on the right. And agree that Hleb is shit, he does have a couple of really good games, if he were more consistent, and can score more goals he would be pretty good, but if not, yeah he is shit!!

If freddie hasnt travelled to austria because of an injury, then that just about sums him up doesnt it and why we should get rid of him. AT LAST!! A man worth listening to! I’ve hated Hleb since he joined, he’s fucking shit. Doesn’t have the confidence, the final ball or the finishing to play as a winger, and when I’ve seen him rarely deployed in the middle he’s been fucking shite too. I looked at youtube compilations of hleb and he looked like a world beater. So what happened to the guy? His confidence is low, but how long can that b used as an excuse. Ronaldo got loads of shit from fans last season, but he played better because of it. His reluctance to shoot, and always look for a ridiculous pass is very frustrating. And i still cant believe the stupidity of pushing that guy over in the psv game that lead to the goal! I know its a silly grudge but it still angers me! Would be interesting to see how hleb would play in a team like aston villa, i dont think he would stand out. Im willing to give hleb a chance next season but he has to raise his game. Theres promising players like nacer barazite that would love to take his place!

I cant think of any other player (other than Ronaldo) in the premiership that i would rather have than Hleb, when he’s on form he is class, hes still only 26 so we’ve still got the best to come from him, and before he came to arsenal he played on the left. I guess I will join the “Hleb is not shit” fraternity that seems to be emerging on the board. I think that those who blame Hleb for all of our woes show the intelligence of a lynch mob.
On the good side: he is awesome dribbler, very good passer, works like hell, and combines almost telepathically with Eboue when he cuts inside and Eboue makes his run.
To qualify that, he is too left-footed, and teams who play him that way (Chelsea) have some success closing down his dribbles, he does need to shoot and score more (yes! I agree!), and he seems to have suffered a loss of confidence/fatigue after an amazing first half of the season.
Anyhow, I think the guy is very good and sometimes even excellent…and all that while being played out of position. Get behind him.

Is there by any chance, even the slightest sliver of truth with regards to the Grimster actually being on Argentine soil? Are there any links available? Any-fucking-where? No there is bloodywell not!
You’d hope any further targets would be well on their way by now, so Ideally things will now happen sooner rather than later. I’d also much prefer any new players to get at least a couple of friendlies in before the season starts. I don’t believe we’re done in the transfer market yet by any means, something tasty perhaps, which is why I’m open to any news right now.

This team, this Arsenal team and squad is quite simply the WORST under AW. Simple. Too much dross and I simply cannot believe he has not signed a top winger. I really cannot see what Wenger’s trying to achieve here. Seriously. It’s clear he gave up on trying to win the league 3 years ago. It seems every new season is a write-off just like this one obviously is. Not one star world-class player and I agree with whoever said it is because AW cannot manage star players. He cannot hack the pressure. With kids at least he’ll have an annual excuse for finishing 4th. I laugh that some Goonahs think we’ll push the top 2. Lay off the crack pipe. It certainly ain’t Eduardo who’s gonna make the difference thats for sure. Our transfer activity has been a complete farce compared to the top teams. We’ve acted like Birmingham city in the market and even Fulham’s work in the market’s been better than ours. Yet again: out = Henry for 16 mil. In - crap Brazilian & crap Frog for combined 15 mil. Yet again, the club is making money. Then Hill-Wood comes out with us being ‘world-class’? World-class joke perhaps yes.

One key injury and watch the shit hit the fan. That is just how weak the squad is in depth. AW has the cash to spend but prefers to continue signing rubbish players from rubbish leagues who will need time to adapt.
What is the point of 8 years of transition? especially when you can see year in year out…that the team is getting steadily worse? Take your pick. Sheffield, Everton, Man City, or PSV anyone?
It’s fine tweaking a squad and fine-tuning with only one or two signings here and there. When you’re not far from success then it’s ok to just add only the odd one. But, when you’re consistently finishing yonks behind the leaders for 3 years and coutning then it is utter lunacy to take this policy.
If a team finishes 12, 24 and then 21 pts behind the leaders what it needs is a DRASTIC OVERHAUL. It does not need ‘only one or 2 changes’. Nonsense. What was needed for was Wenger to spend the wonga on something proven and world-class for once. Instead, as usual, he lets a topplayer with experience go and brings in bullshit youngsters from shite leagues.
Then next season when we’re getting tonked he’ll talk about ‘lack of experience’.

Wenger has had a whole summer to look at his squad, he has money to spend definitely. We are probably in a minus again with our spending, we’ve signed about four players & sold around five I believe. So again we’re just balancing books. Makes me laugh when Hill-Wood says “We’re in a very healthy financial position”. Of course we fukkin are! We have a board & manager who go minus or break even every year! Wenger is Hill-Woods DREAM MANAGER!
Once again, if Arsenal/Wenger has a shit season, he should tender his resignation, as this is his TEAM, he had the Summer with sufficient funds to bring in proven/experienced players & chose not to.
In my opinion it will take performances of STUPENDOUS proportions from the likes of Gallas, Toure, Cesc, Rosicky, RVP, Gilberto all combined for us to push for the title.
“THE SHIT HITTIN THE FAN” is the right expression to use for Wenger, he had a whole Summer to evaluate his squad, there’s been no World Cup & No Euros, so no excuse for tiredness. Why don’t you put forward your thoughts to Stan Kroenke and apply for a position in his mangerial team. I’m sure he could do with people of your calibre when you explain to him how Arsenal Football Club should be run. Think of it you can rid Arsenal of all it evils in one go. Do it. Delta Goodrem and Vincent, as a basic summary of your views; Arsenal’s no good, Wenger has lost his touch and the board are tight with money. There will be no trophies in the foreseeable future. The kids are over-rated. We don’t buy top players. Most gooners would think that you’re over-reacting, but admit that there’s some kernel of truth in your rantings.
Now that you’re right, what do you suggest we do? It’s one thing to carp about the obvious, it’s another to come up with creative solutions for the problem.
I personally don’t think it’s that bad. We’ve got beautiful footballing side that can’t finish against defensive formations and concedes weak goals from set pieces. Apart from that, we can play the pants off any side in the league. All we need is better coordination between Toure, Gallas and co, and a natural finisher (and we’ve acquired one in Eduardo).
If Wenger’s right and everything falls into place (and I know you’ve got doubts about that), we’ll challenge for the league this season. If not, we’ll have to listen to all you Gelbites for another season (and 3 seasons is punishment enough, in my opinion).

Call me a ‘Gelbite’ all you wish but I will carry on with my dissenting views. This season is make or break for Wenger.
No more excuses. He bombed out Henry, there are no WC or Euros to blame burn-out on. All the players in that squad are HIS players. He has done nothing in the league for 3 years except lose to spectacularly rubbish teams. He has had the cash to spend this summer but has pilfered it again, as usual. Oh and he released the best player in the world to boot!
I have a few suggestions. By the way, if a blogger’s view counts for nowt, then you’ll appreciate that this also means that your super-optimistic views also count for shit.
6 Suggestions to improve things:
a) The Board of swindling mugs give Wenger an ultimatum: after 3 years of dross, he needs to finish within at LEAST, 5 pts of the leaders.
b) Contact Ancelotti and line him up as a replacement for next season
c) Wenger signs a fucking top striker who knows our league well. McCarthy? Tevez? (oops). Our striking options are pathetic once RVP fails to complete a full season yet AGAIN.
d) Wenger signs a quality winger. Pedersen at Blackburn knows the league well and would work wonders.
e) Wenger begins to pay more attention to the opposition and fices up on his pathetic tactics. Enough of just sending his team out to go and enjoy themselves and play lovely football. PSV sussed that one out inni?
f) Wenger gets us AT LEAST to the quarters of the CL this season. Again by improving tactics and playing players in the right positions.
There. Some suggestions. There’s so many more like e.g.not releasing quality like Paddy, Pires, Henry etc…and getting some fucking EXPERIENCE. But like I said.
No more excuses next season. Wenger has stood still while our rivals breeze us blatant.

Thats better Vincent at least that’s different and if I may say so you have made some very good points except Wenger did not bomb out Henry, he left because his marraige broke down or that he felt destabilised after Dein’s exit, whatever.
The transfer window has not closed and he may have another signing or two up his sleeve. So hold back on that for a while.
The other point, why would Ancelloti come to England? He is king in Italy, he can’t do any wrong there.
Pederson & McCarthy played in a very functional Blackburn side, they didn’t tear down any trees did they? Tevez, too much luggage. But I agree we need another experienced striker as I also think Walcott & Bendtner are too young to sustain an entire season.

He scored more league goals than ANY Arsenal forward. And before people start crowing on about RVP’s injury please remember that this boy has failed to complete a full season. It’s not ‘luck’. He is injury-prone with brittle bones. Simple as. Pedersen? Can you name me one Arse winger that can cross the ball as well as that or delivers as much of a threat from free-kicks or set-pieces? Saying Pederson can cross better than any other Arsenal winger is a bit of a no-brainer. Of course he can but you know and I know we simply dont play that type of football. We haven’t done so since we sold Hartson. On occasion when we get desperate we attempt to play it long or throw more balls in the box but we’re simply not geared up for that. Perhaps with Ade or Bendtner we may try that this year and the new lad Da Silva got a pretty neat header against Robinson as well as scoring a few more for his previous club.
Ok, I’ll agree with you Pedersen could be an answer.

a) If the board give him an ultimatum, Wenger’ll probably walk. One of the problems is that Arsenal has become Arsene Wenger. If he goes, there’s no one with football experience at the club. And who would you replace him with?
b) Would Ancelotti want to come to Arsenal? There are no transfer funds and we’re the 4th placed team. Milan is one of the best sides in the world at the moment, and the best in Italy. Ancelotti is a Milan legend, to boot. I’d suggest Juane Ramos as a better option. He’s proved himself in Spain with an excellent Sevilla side, and has a good eye for talent.
c) I agree with needing a top striker. van Persie has to show that he can last a full season. Eduardo has the pedigree to be successful, but he’s a bit small. Tevez or Anelka would’ve been good buys, in my opinion. McCarthy’s a bit low-rent, and African. We’ve already got too many going away on ANC (and it’s probably the real reason we’ve stopped signing Ivorians).
d) Do we play with wingers? We’ve got Clichy and Eboue bombing up the flanks, and anyway, without a guy would can head the ball, do we need a traditional winger? That said, a Quaresma or a Ribery would’ve been an excellent addition.
e) Wenger’s Achille’s Heel has always been his lack of tactical nous. I think we need a tactican to act as his 2IC, sort of like what Queiroz is to Ferguson.

Gunafied - Why is the medical so far away? Normally, if two clubs agree terms, the player will then go and have a medical straight away, unless they are competing in a tournament, like the World Cup. As far as I know, Quaresma is in no such tournament. Why is it nearly a week till the medical? I just find it incredibly dodgy that you aren’t saying how you know this and there doesn’t appear to be any proof. If you can show me some, then I’ll believe you.
