Abou Diaby should play every game between now and the end of the season

0 guns March 21st, 2007

Arguably our most promising young playerAs you may have gathered by now, I am not the manager of Arsenal football club. That’s probably for the best, although my record on Football Manager 2007 would stand me in good stead should Arsene ever up sticks and leave.

However, if I was in charge, I’d make sure I gave Abou Diaby as many games as possibly between now and the end of the season. Why? Because our team is a better one when Diaby is in it.

When he arrived in January of last year, he and Adebayor made an almost instant impact, dramatically improving our pitiful performances away from home. The highlight was Adebayor’s debut - a 2-0 win over Birmingham in which the Togolese scored and Diaby was the undoubted Man of the Match.

Of course, as we all know, injury ended his season early and kept him out of any serious first team action until last month. But since he has come back, his performances (particularly in the Carling Cup) have been as promising as ever. Playing from the left, he’s shown wonderful drive to go past players, and his lucky goal against Aston Villa only came about because of a determined surge up the wing and into the box.

The game at Everton was his first appearance in central midfield since he has come back into the squad, and came alongside Cesc. I’m a big fan of Denilson, but for me Diaby is the more natural partner for Fabregas. Gilberto is fantastic, but it’s my belief that within a couple of years it will be impossible to leave Diaby out. His ability to ride tackles and go past players gives us an ability to turn defence into attack that we haven’t had since Patrick Vieira left.

There are flaws in his game, of course. Such is his determination to carry the ball the length of the pitch that at times he misses inviting passes or gets outnumbered without offloading. This will come with experience. Crucially, he doesn’t lack confidence - he believes he can win in the key challenges, and that’s half the battle.

People have talked about our need for more physical presence for a couple of seasons now, and when you consider some are calling Diaby “The Real Beast”, then he could well be the answer. As if to underline his promise, he’s now been called up to the full French squad. Against Liverpool (and perhaps in all away games until May), I’d play Adebayor up top, supported by Rosicky and Freddie, with a mouthwatering midfield trio of Diaby, Cesc, and Gilberto.

Not much news to speak off, but East Lower has an interesting piece of Senderos.  If you ask me, Gallas and Toure need to be our centre-backs on a consistent basis if we want to win anything.

I absolutely agree…I was screaming at the television on Sunday that we were wasting his performance. At times we play too much of a possession style and it has lead, in my opinion, to our lack of goals. Diaby makes our midfield more dynamic and moves up more quickly from defense to attack. I want more Diaby.

Agree with every word you say, but would like to emphasize something you mention almost in passing, but which has been frustrating me a great deal: Rosicky has got to be given a chance to play in the Bergkamp role, supporting whoever is the main striker (eventually Henry, I presume, but Adebayor for now). I’m sure it was his main position for Dortmind and for the Czech national side, and I think his inventiveness and shooting ability in such an advanced position would be invaluable. He is wasted on the left-wing, where other can play (Ljungberg, Hleb, Denilson, Diaby - though I agree it would be good to see him in central midfield - and maybe even Robery next season?)

  • 3. adam  |  March 21st, 2007 at 12:52 am

rubbish, play rosicky as bergkamp? shall we put van persie on the left then? will rosicky score 20+ goals like van persie will? we need him on the left

Should we play Diaby in Hleb’s role? I think he feels more comfortable as a center midfielder, he could play there with Hleb out of the squad, if we used 4-4-2 diamond formation:

    ——————Rosicky——————
    ———Diaby—————Cesc——–
    ——————-Gilberto—————–

That would leave Rosicky in the middle, same way he played at Dortmund.

I agree with Boring-boring-arsnal. However let’s not dismiss Denilson quite so quickly. He’s just a kid remember, and he may well be better than all of the existing midfielders (except Cesc of course - but NO ONE will ever be better than him). And this time next year i bet we are saying the same thing about Fran Merida. If only we had these riches in the Striker department. Unfortunately, until we do, we won’t really be champs of anything. Baptista, Adebayor, Aliadiere are not exactly world class, or ever likely to be.

I agree… Diaby is a pay quality diamond,if he is being polished and shaped under AW supervision… I believe he’d be our steel backbone in the team.

He deserve to play regularly,as the rumour of Gilberto to Serie A is flying around.Should gain more precious experience… Am happy he is here in Arsenal…

DIaby is strong and great althelete. He is simply awesome, I believe he will be better than P.V in future, when he is in his peak.

    Arsenal 3rd generation Champion Team

    Akineev

    Eboue Gallas Toure clichy

    Denilson Diaby Fabregas Rosicky

    Van persie bendtner

without 2nd generation (Henry,Lehmann,Gilberto)? Can Arsenal still win?

Any comments from all ARsenal fans?

  • 12. Victor tan  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:31 am

Believe Arsenal can still win without henry, lehmenn and gilberto

As the speed diaby and fabregas groom together, they can be unbelievanle in years to come…. plus the strike force of Van persie and Bendtner is very strong…. Van persie have technical skills whereas Bendtner provide aerial power…..

Enough to win…… Back up, we have Walcott, adebayor and vela

    Any comments??

  • 14. Grovelad  |  March 21st, 2007 at 4:33 am

    Rockz, NO WAY!

As much as I like him and his directness, he gets homesick at the most critical period of the season (Nov - Jan) where games come thick and thin and define the season. i rather we get some from the team like clichy playing left winger and sell him to pay for someone new.

  • 15. MAC  |  March 21st, 2007 at 5:39 am

hell with gilberto,…sell him to juve craps now, cuz he’s simply not a winner, we have Abou,Cess, Hleb, rosicky, and specially dear denilson who is going to be our top middle,..believe me,..he is better than cess cuz, he’s got same vision but better tackleing and more important, he is able to score 2 meters from the goal :D:D
at last, i’m just sick and tired of this sendros sh_t,..sick of seeing him beaten by drog, let’s get rid of him this season,…please ;-(
PS: lads,..do not forget last year’s partnership of Hleb and Eboue, ..whitout that, we would have been nowhere near CH FINAL

  • 16. fadli  |  March 21st, 2007 at 6:24 am

i think diaby is the next vieira.. he is better than denilson..we need player midfield who can score goal..not just passing around but no finishing…wenger should buy world class player next season for add the team

    regards comments by boring-boring-arsnal
Am sure you never gonna be a coach. How can you have Cesc on the right side of midfield. Who will be the right back, certainly not Eboue coz that would the weakest wing for Arsenal. They are both not good at tackling and Cesc is not a good crosser of the ball. Cesc’s vision is well useful from the middle. Until we have someone who can read the game so well like Gilberto, Cesc can never shine, so those who want him out lack foresight, unless you thinking of another trophhyless season.

  • 18. Gelbs  |  March 21st, 2007 at 7:00 am

Arse stinks again this morning. That’s the thing about having to start work early, don’t get time to have a clearout xxxxxxx

  • 19. Edgar Ndyakira  |  March 21st, 2007 at 7:08 am

Diaby should play every game however he should notice his problems.-when in defence he should avoid dodging which has left the opponents winning the and making our denfence shaky leading to a goal.-when in attack let him see his players in possition and give them the ball other than remaining with the ball lossing it in the end.with the rest of the team, let Hleb ,Rosicky,Fabrigas, start together.thes are the people who can do it better for us rather than bringing Freddie, sell him.instead use Alidirea in 11,Hleb 7,in the middle Rosicy and Fabrigas.with that Theo can be in attack because of the wise midfield.

  • 20. Edgar Ndyakira  |  March 21st, 2007 at 7:21 am

ARSENAL :Lehman-Ebue-clichy-Gallas-Toure-denlison-diaby-Fabrigas-Hleb-Rosicky-V-persie. Because of injuries and Gilberto being a captain, let him use-lehman,Toure,Hoyt,Gilberto,Gallas,Denlison,Diaby,Fabrigas,Hleb,Rosicky,Aliadriea.

  • 21. Wreh  |  March 21st, 2007 at 7:27 am

    I want

    Buffon
    Toure Gilberto Gallas Clichy
    Rosicky Cesc Diaby
    Van Persie Adebayor Henry

    I think

    Lehmann
    Eboue Toure Gallas Clichy
    Hleb Fabregas Gilberto Rosicky
    Van Persie Henry

would score and play most teams off the pitch but if Eboue is wobbling or Clichy injured we lose width and Hleb, Rosicky and anyone else bar vP don’t really do it. Hleb and Cesc need to work on their shooting but like that the ball stays ours and vP and TH14 are not as wasteful as the current crew. We’ve hardly ever had that line up this season, it’s not so broken.

    Would Aliadiere make a winger?

    http://eplleague.blogspot.com/2007/03/arsenal-white-away-shirt-20072008.html

    What The FUCK?

btw-I’d rather we kept Aliadiere than Baptista, he actually looks like he could be a good winger even if he doesn’t make the grade as a striker.
I haven’t seen Merida in the flesh yet, is he as good as the hype makes him sound?

  • 26. James Marsh  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:02 am

Oh, and also. This is the first time that Wenger has had the chance to blood young players and experiment with changes in the team without the results having a direct effect on our chances of picking up a piece of silverwear. We know we aren’t going to this year, and playing Diaby/Denilson etc in the Premier League is going to stand them in great stead for the future.
I thought a little while back that Denilson was maybe too similar to Cesc to play next to each other the same team (yet) as it limited our central midfield in terms of getting tackles in amongst other things. Diaby is the long term future there and I agree with GS that we should use this opportunity to blood him, amongst others, in the first team from now till the end of the season.
I haven’t been on this boar for the past few days as I couldn’t face the doom-mongers crowing about how crap we are. It is good to see that some people have been making sense though and keeping the faith in the face of all the depression.

  • 27. tubes  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:08 am

    i have had a brain wave….
we all agree we have an abundance of central midfielders who all think there too good for the reserve team and should be in the first team, you have: cesc, gilberto, diaby, denilson, flamini, muamba and song, IMO the last three are never gonna make it at arsenal so they should be moved on, say for the three of them you get 5-6 million, aliadere and reyes are the other two players that will never be arsenal legends so again move them on, say 10-11 million for them two, add to that possibly ljundberg who despite a couple of good (ish) performance’s of late still hasn’t done enough this season to convince me he is worthy back up to hleb and he is also injury prone as well so say we get 4 million for him, now that sounds like a lot of dissruption to the team but its not as they are mostly all squad players at best, now selling the afore mentioned would give us a total of 20 million to add to the 20 million we supposedly have already giving us a grand total of 40 million to spend on the area’s that need improving which IMO are goalkeeper (akinfeev), left winger (not sure) and left back (not sure)
thats my plan i’ll let you know when its finished…

Will Bendtner makes the grade next season? Is he going to be a bang or flop next season?

    Please comment.

  • 29. James Marsh  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:15 am

Tubes. Good plan in some respects but then suppose we buy a couple of great players with the money from selling all of them and have a bad injury list the next year, particularly in midfield? We’d have no players to come in and play, unless we just have crap ones in reserve who know they’re not really good enough so are happy to not be playing regularly?

  • 30. Top Gunner  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:18 am

that new shirt loks pretty good to me. i will def get it if it comes out like that

  • 31. James Marsh  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:19 am

Jason-I haven’t seen enough of Bendtner myself to comment conclusively but I have friends who are Birmingham season ticket holders and they rave about him every week. They say at times though he seems to find the Champsionship level almost too easy so sometimes almost seems to take an extra man on for the sake of it.
Also, even if he doesn’t make the grade fully next year it’s too early (given his age/lack of real top level experience besides int football and the fact he didn’t cost us loads of money) to call him a flop.

  • 32. Wreh  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:22 am

A new left back as a priority? Clichy has been great, Traore could be even better and Gallas is excellent cover. A right wing would be as useful as a left. Eboue’s final ball is a little unreliable and I like Hleb but he is not a winger.

  • 33. victor  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:23 am

Well I think Bendtner, were make the grade…. He will at least score 10 EPL goals I guess… Van persie(if no injury) will score 15 and Henry 20 again. adebayor,gilberto,rosicky(8 apeice), fabgreas,denilson(6).

  • 34. grimandi  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:25 am

Well I think Bendtner will defintely make the grade. He is well train in our academy, he score tonnes of goal, and a better prospect than Lupoli, that why Arsene decides to send him back to Italy.

  • 35. Jacky  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:28 am

Bendtner good enough for Arsenal….. Yeah….

He will be important for us next season, if all the superstars stay injury free. Next season you will see the real Arsenal.

Henry, Van persie, Bendtner, Adebayor, Rosicky, Fabregas, Helb, Denilson, diaby, flamini will make the grade next season.

  • 36. tubes  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:28 am

james i wouldn’t of thought that we could never NEVER have an injury list as long as the one we’ve had this season could we? i think we 1 quality player in every position and 1 good player for every position as cover, if two people from the same position get injured then thats just bad luck. my idea above was just to get some transfer funds by selling players i dont really like / rate you could even add to that list bentdner as he’s someone who comes across as an arrogant ass wipe who belives his own hype way to much yet he’s only had a good 15 games for B.F.C and we could afford to sell him as we have a shit load of strikers at the moment as well….

  • 37. djourou  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:30 am

    Please comment……

  • 38. sammy  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:32 am

of coz djourou next season…. as for bendtner even better than Lupoli.

  • 39. Bendtner  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:39 am

Well… Henry is No 1 Striker… As for me, challenge with van persie next season, for the second striker role.

  • 40. James Marsh  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:40 am

Senderos strikes me as a kinda ‘old fashioned’ English central defender whereas Djourou looks better on the ball (Please, nobody point out his nationality to me…I do know!). They both have their strengths (And weaknesses) but in the long term I think it’ll be Djourou who’ll be ahead in the pecking order of the squad.

  • 41. dennis  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:42 am

[...] Gunnerblog reckons Abou Diaby should play every game between now and the end of the season and sees him as the long term partner for Cesc. If, as I think will happen, we revert to a 4-5-1 with Adebayor as the lone striker with someone like Rosicky or Freddie supporting then there’s a place in the side for Diaby. Gilberto can anchor the midfield and Cesc and Abou can do their work ahead of him. In a 4-4-2 it’s hard to see a place for him just yet as we’ll stick with the experience of Gilberto who should move back into midfield for the Liverpool game. He’s an exciting prospect though and I’m hoping he doesn’t come back from international duty banjaxed. [...]

  • 46. MAC  |  March 21st, 2007 at 9:59 am

Abou is the the most promising DM and he would secure the way for our fantasy attacking midfield to flow,…let the blood flow,…any non injured combination of cess, denilson, rosy, hleb, Ali, walcott,..
flamini is crap and we should cash him along side freddi, sendros, and offside runner dork Ade ( of course we can use him as ladder but not striker) and gilberto if they pay well, use him as backup otherwise.
our possible targets could be,…Alex, Quarisma, and a keeper.
yeah I love to see Torres ,Etto’, Ribery,..etc,…but let’s be realistic, we can’t afford theme, even if we do, chelsky would offer more ;-)
and we don’t need LB,..just wait and see Armand next term.
let TT and RVP rest for a while,…thay’ll be back next season fresh and healthy to beat the crap out of any chelski
    this is my line up:

    not Lehman
    Eboue,toure,gallas,Armand
    Abou
    Hleb, Deni/Cess, Rosy
    RVP, TT

Subs: gilberto, Alex, Quarisma, Meridda, clichy, Djourou, and other Arsen surprises
with a little luck, and no injury,….lads are the next unbeaten
just need new comers to fill in the blank of injuries,…

  • 47. Lancealittle  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:13 am

God I’m glad that the doom mongers have gone back into their pit of despair. I’m up for Diaby doing the rest of the season in the middle, I also want Gilberto to play center defense (except maybe a 451 at Anfield) with Kolo on the right as that combination will give us much better flexibility if we have injuries next season. It seems right to experiment with the squad now that we cannot finish below 4th realistically. If we look at our last few seasons, we do much better when we do not sign many players, so we must not try and buy more than 1 first choice first teamer and possibly a goalie on top, so I would buy a winger who plays on the left but could play on the right. I am a believer in Bentner, and I think you need a certain amount of arrogance to be a great striker, so I don’t think that is a problem.

  • 48. gazzap  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:25 am

yeah Diaby is the dogs bollocks. I really like him and he can do a job for us now, he is ready. too many small passers in midfield. dont get me wrong I know that sort of player is important for us but when we have 3 or 4 of them across the middle there is not enough variation. we need maxium of two playing at any one time. thats why I dont really like arsene’s first choice of Hleb, Cesc, Rosicky and Gilberto. whenever those 4 have played this season we have struggled. you need a Diaby type in there.

  • 49. tubes  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:26 am

Everyone makes mistakes… The question is how to reduce it… So is Senderos… He needs time,he’s still young, experience can reduce mistakes… Hehe.I’d like to see Bendtner next season, hopefully AW will bring in some new top class reinforcements. Gk: Buffon, we need one more experienced CB, a proven versatile or side midfielder (Ribery… Any comment?), an a striker with killer instinct+top class finisher (Etoo perhaps)…

Mornin’ all! Yes, absolutely Diaby should start all the remaining games this season. He has looked strong, quick and alert from the moment he got back on the pitch and has continued to improve. If he is given an extended run this season he stands a chance of becoming a colossus for us next season. I believe every team needs to have one such midfield player to allow those around him to better play their own games.

Radical dreamer; Reyes should only come back if he’s prepared to stand up and apologise to the fans and his teammates for his infantile behaviour. Since this is unlikely to happen I’m with you- flog the whingy little bugger to whoever will have him…. Galatasaray would probably have him. Then he’d have something to truly complain about!

Still think we ought to try for jaaski-thingy as a first option, especially if we are not gonna allow Almunia his opportunity as first choice keeper. We have the problem with the keepers that if they are good, then teams will hang on to them as long as they can. They only seem to be for sale if they are A) shit B) old or C) unproven.

  • 58. tubes  |  March 21st, 2007 at 11:47 am

i thought that about jaskuilinen a while ago rural but then watching him against man u he saved a shot but instead of pushing it around the post he pushed it straight out in front of him where ji sung park tapped it in i also think he cost them another goal in that game to, maybe he was having an off day or something.

  • 59. James Marsh  |  March 21st, 2007 at 12:04 pm

Micah Richards is very promising but I don’t think he’s ready to play week in week out at the highest level yet, and certainly not in the CL. He does some great things but then makes really amatuerish errors. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s gonna be a great player, but if he wasn’t English then there wouldn’t be as much hype about him as there is.
We’re fine at right back, or will be once Eboue learns to cut out the negative aspects of his game and actually track back, or Hoyte gets better in general. Also, if we keep Kolo out there we have the best right back in the world in the making.

  • 60. India-Gunner  |  March 21st, 2007 at 12:14 pm

Jaaskelainen is good and proven in Premier League. Definitely better than Alumnia.

AW should also SELL Aliadierre, Freddie, Senderos & Hleb, make room for new players.

    ………………………….Buy Micah Richard ………………………..

Even the Chinese Zheng Zhi can scored. AW loan some Chinese & Indian players to help us to sell the T-Shirt so he has no excuse of no money.

Word, I agree with GS on this one, we should use the 4-5-1 and allow Diaby to learn alongside Gilberto. Cecs and Diaby are very dynamic and Rosicky loves to play behind the striker (Old Trafford this year), Adebayor good up top alone. It could allow for the Beast to play his favourite position. I thought the jury was still out on Diaby last year, but since his injury he has been brilliant. Reyes was never consistent enough here in the first place, people just want him back as an imagined solution to an imagined problem. Plus, he was at the centre of a big split in the camp and I don’t think coming back is an option for him.

  • 63. dan  |  March 21st, 2007 at 1:11 pm

and jacques santini scoff when wenger said that diaby could be as good as vieira.i bet he regreting selling him to us now the plonker

  • 64. ron  |  March 21st, 2007 at 1:11 pm

i think m richards will be a great player blah blah, really big statement james

good 2 be, g hoyte is the next gallas?? really? how many times u seen him play now?

  • 65. ron  |  March 21st, 2007 at 1:16 pm

well madrid arent taking reyes so if we want bap we’ll have to pay 4 him. no thanks.

dan what age r u? im guessing 14…

  • 66. James Marsh  |  March 21st, 2007 at 1:22 pm

    Hey Ron,
How’s Ireland? Is it raining? I was just saying that I don’t think Richards is ready to be a first teamer at Arsenal yet so isn’t a player who would/should go straight into our starting line up as lots of people seem to think. Maybe I didn’t make that clear enough…..

  • 67. Ruralgoon  |  March 21st, 2007 at 1:27 pm

Bloggie! you’re back! Was it you trying to wallop lumpalard?

  • 68. ron  |  March 21st, 2007 at 1:32 pm

richards is like eboue, quick & powerful. we paid £1m for him, prob £10m for richardse

its not going 2 happen. end of. go figure. im sooo cool.

yeah its cold & wet here… i love this place, at least the air is clear & ppl actually talk 2 each other instead of trying to run over the top u on escalators

  • 69. ron  |  March 21st, 2007 at 1:37 pm

jamie redknapp - i always liked him; good looking, decent footballer, beautiful wife, sesestayed away from the media, unlike the beckhams.

then he became a pundit on sky!! everytime i see him i lose more respect for him.

please stop talking so much, give the other guys a chance.

  • 70. gazzap  |  March 21st, 2007 at 2:17 pm

ron, what people actually talk to you? I find that hard to believe, other than to say Piss off ron. If Ireland is such a nice place to live why the hell are you so miserable?

  • 71. barry  |  March 21st, 2007 at 2:28 pm

ok can someone tel me what is a super super class player? has wenger lost hes head. what is it with him and under age boys? something is not right about him.

  • 72. Ruralgoon  |  March 21st, 2007 at 2:28 pm

Gazzap; the irish will talk to ANYONE!!
What makes Ron so miserable? the fact that he cant get a word in edgeways.

  • 73. gazzap  |  March 21st, 2007 at 2:34 pm

his comments about buying super class are at odds with his comments about not liking to buy superstars but preferring to create superstars. thing is he wants to buy super class at cut price bargain prices, which doesn’t compute.
he went onto say that he had enough strikers and midfielders and went on to name about 8 central midfielders, none of whom are wingers. does wenger not recognise that wingers are different to central midfielders? he is copying mourinho and playing 4 central midfielders across the centre, though Chelsea still do have Robben, SWP and Joe Cole, who are probably more winger like than anything we have.

  • 74. Ruralgoon  |  March 21st, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Now, here’s a name to throw into the mix; arjan robben. Winger, effective from either side, quick, and suitably pissed off with management at chavski to have suggested that he is out of there come the summer. If we could solve his balance problems [no other reason for him to dive so much] I reckon he’d suit us down to the ground.

  • 75. Lancealittle  |  March 21st, 2007 at 2:50 pm

The super class statement was a bit strange I have to say as you’re right Gazzap about Wenger wanting to make them. The only area where he likes to do this is the Goalie. So could he mean Buffon? I would be happy with Cudachini (spelling) he must want to play first team football and he could now play for England so we could get the press off our backs as well?!?

  • 76. Blog Head  |  March 21st, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Rural - For one second I did think “Get him !!!!” - Is that wrong?

Ronald - Do you think of Jamie Redknapp when your fondling your willy?

  • 77. Ruralgoon  |  March 21st, 2007 at 2:52 pm

No, bloggie, it’s not wrong… I thought “bugger, he ducked!”… the bloke’s just too easy to dislike :-)

  • 78. James Marsh  |  March 21st, 2007 at 2:54 pm

I’ll vouch for the fact that the Irish will talk to anyone….at great length, particularly if they’re drunk old tramps with the scent of urine about them….especially on the tube when there’s a seat available next to me. They’re so friendly that they’ll offer you a swig of their can of cider and jabber and slur away 6 inches from your face, and even when you can’t understand a word of what they’re saying and are trying not to retch from smell of their breath it’s nice to be reminded of how friendly people can be……much better than just listening to my Ipod….

Just kidding Ron. Part of my family are Irish….actually I may have just described some of them.

Rural- Moronho would never let Robben come to us. I know he let Gallas but that was partly to get Cole and I don’t know of him sniffing around any of our players this year.

    BTW-Barry=BlogHead??

  • 80. Good to be a GOONAH!!  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:16 pm

while we’re on the subject of Micah Richards… it should be known that he is a lifelong GOONER… and has modelled his style after Sol and Paddy. Oh, and his idol is Ian Wright… altho.. that said… his best mate is SWP…

not sure it would be fair to Djourou, Eboue, Gibert, Senderos and both Hoytes to buy Micah Richards … particularly as it will cost skywards of £12m to do so (being English after all)

  • 81. *_Respects Highbury  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:23 pm

Me like Huntelaar very mucho….Nice to have you back Rural where the devil have you been? Akinfeev I also like much.
GAZZAP I have to say that I very much agree with you with regards to the inherent contradictions of Wenger’s statements on ’super-super class’ players.
As you say GazaaP: I am sure that yourself, Rural, Amis, Little D, Bloggie, etc…all have our particular train of thought with what regards a ’super-super class player’. So therefore, even though we may differ, the list would surely include recurring names:
Ronaldinho, Kaka (my favourite), Eto’o (I want), Buffon, Messi, Robinho, Adriano, Fake Ronaldo…etc….

However, one gets the impression that ’super-super class players’ in the Arsene Wenger Thesaurus would contain names like LaRoche, Bertrand, Sunu, Bakayoko, Ogbeme…a series of French and African names nobody has ever heard of - who may well turn out to be outstanding some time in the future.

Nobody is saying there is anything wrong with that as, Wenger’s record for unearthing such players is second to none. However, it does get certain fans’ hopes up when he utters such statements - only to then retract them a day later.

And GazzaP for the 100th time: I am with you 100%.
I really do not see what harm to the variation in our play, signing a quality winger could do. Especially for the left-side.
I would much rather see Rosicky play in that number 10 role, I believe that with his potent shot, he could have the Bergkamp-esque aility to draw players out of their defences.

And let’s face it, we need it.

P.S Did you know that Julio Baptista had a poem written especially about him and Jeremie Aliadiere? I’m not joking. The poem was written by Edward Lear.
How does the first line go again?……

Oh yes: ‘The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea,
In a beautiful Pea Green boat…”

    That’s the one”! Lol…

  • 82. tubes  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:23 pm

  • 83. rob  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:28 pm

wenger is going crazy over under age boys. wenger needs to go noe and he can take has kids 2 hes bedroom and trun them in to world class players.

  • 84. Blog Head  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:31 pm

    James, Barry=gayboy

  • 85. Good to be a GOONAH!!  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:32 pm

I think Arsene meant that to improve the squad… he would have to bring in top top top level players to improve on what we already have under contract

    Kaka
    Buffon
    Messi
    Ronaldinho
    Eto’o
    Robinho

there are very very very few of these…

but if you think about it, it would take a very special player to start up front ahead of either Van Persie (first name on the teamsheet for HOLLAND!!!) or Henry.

He did this last year by bringing in Gallas who jumped the queue ahead of Senderos, Djourou and others.

The only realistic areas where we would seek a super, super class player is in the sticks (Buffon, but more likely WONDERKID Akinfeev) and out wide (”shut up, moron” in advance to anyone who dares suggest Ribery… ta)… I would go for Robinho or Babel.

For all of his sun loving stupidity, I feel we’ve missed Reyes and the natural width he gave us more than anyone else this season. He must be replaced.

  • 86. jim  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:32 pm

wenger has 2 stop fucking around with under age boys and bring in a few world class players.

  • 88. James Marsh  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:36 pm

With regards the Lampard thing Bloggie, I did for one second think “Get him!!” as well but I wasn’t proud of myself. Also, I had more sympathy for the fan than I would have ever thought possible as Chavski were celebrating like they’d won the bloody cup, rather than a quarter final!
Also, is it possible for Chavski to score a goal in any match without Moronho running down the touchline like they’d scored a last gasp winner in a cup final?
ALSO, was it my imagination or did I see some Chavski players putting the boot in when the guy was already on the ground?? Why haven’t I read about that anywhere?

  • 89. Good to be a GOONAH!!  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:38 pm

    hi jim

he brought in Fabregas, Toure and RVP for a combined £2m… all of whom Im sure you would clumsily describe as “under age boys”

last summer he brought in Rosicky, Gallas and Baptista… who must all be described as world class bar the “Beast’s” performances this year.

  • 90. Matt  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:39 pm

    No! Appiah’s shit.

Matt… you were doing so well with your post before deciding on mentioning B(ribery).

And Appiah is shit.. that is correct

  • 93. Ruralgoon  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:44 pm

Respects… I’ve been on the fringes, as they say… have been reading the posts, but it’s been silly season in the quarrying world for the last few days!

James; there was actually a piecein the mirror today and photographic evidence to back it up. It appears that the spurs fans kicked up so much of a stink on phone-ins that the FA had to look into it…. And before I get castigated for buying the miror; I borrowed it off the manager!!!

  • 94. Matt  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:45 pm

Ribery is a good player. Fast, intelligent, scores goals, is fucking ugly. He’d be a great signing for us; much better than someone like Robinho would be.

  • 95. Good to be a GOONAH!!  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Ribery is not a good player… being Henry’s mate and French does not a good player make

not sure what you mean by intelligent… but his passing is poor and while he’s quick we’ve already got lots of pace throughout the side…

as for scoring goals… you’ve lost your credibilty there, mate

  • 96. James Marsh  |  March 21st, 2007 at 3:51 pm

i mean, your a farmer for a start & your a women talking about football…

  • 99. gazzap  |  March 21st, 2007 at 4:22 pm

Robinho would never cut it in the prem, he struggled with the ‘physical’ nature of La Liga for christ sake. Ribery is not a winger and he does not have pace or score many goals. no thanks

How about Queresma? or Gamst Pedersen? or if we really are skint then just stick RVP on the left wing, rosicky on the right and use Bendtner/Ade and Henry up front. there should be goals in that line up.

  • 100. Lancealittle  |  March 21st, 2007 at 4:23 pm

Thats excellent news about Chelea, maybe we should have kicked up a fuss after the cup final about all the celery that was thrown and the FA might have concentrated on that rather than the brawl handbags. N0T!

  • 101. Blog Head  |  March 21st, 2007 at 4:36 pm

Its annoying the way the chelsea players can say they were just celebrating, but anyone who knows football knows exactly what they were doing.

Thats why no-one does or never will respect them.

  • 102. TH14  |  March 21st, 2007 at 4:52 pm

Sign a GK, swap Reyes for Alves, sign an expierenced cb, K-J-Huntelaar and a winger who can score goals (Molouda) and get rid of the squad players who lets face it will never make it at Arsenal.
    Next years team;
    Buffon
    Alves Toure Gallas Clichy
    Gilberto(c)
    Malouda Fabregas RVP
    K-J-H TH
    Subs;Almunia, Woodi, Diaby/Denilson, Rosicky, Ade
At anfield why dont we go 4-5-1 with Hleb in the middle and Eboue on the wing?

  • 103. ron  |  March 21st, 2007 at 4:57 pm

next yrs team, in the middle of march!!!!

    good times.

i can console myself in the knowledge that we are building a team that may or may not win things 2/3 yrs.

    bring back stewart houston.

  • 104. ron  |  March 21st, 2007 at 5:00 pm

or bruce rioch, at least he signed a world class player.

so it is him that we owe our stadium too.

they should have a statue of him.

    long live brucey.

  • 106. ron  |  March 21st, 2007 at 5:14 pm

dont take it personally, im just highlighting the fact that this is all we have to look forward to now for the next 5 months.

last season was a disaster only for getting to the champs league final, this yr we have gone backwards - which is an interesting direction for a team that is building for the future.

maybe in 10 yrs when walcott is 28, fab 29 etc are world class players we will challenge for the title.

that will be so much more satisfying… cocks

  • 107. joshin69  |  March 21st, 2007 at 5:19 pm

ron most of us actually feel like that about you! Rural speaks twice the sense and is thrice the Gooner

  • 108. Pabz  |  March 21st, 2007 at 6:29 pm

One for ‘American EPL I see 5 games a season on ESPN highlights’ Paul… Or the soccermom as someone else put it.

Cesc Fabregas: “Next season I feel we will definitely be genuine title contenders. I think we have a great squad, we all know each other really well, we have a lot of quality, we have the desire, we are all winners. What is missing right now is the goals. In the Champions League we did not take our chances and a lot of our games this year have been 0-0, or we lose 1-0, or we draw 1-1, just because we haven’t taken our opportunities. Teams likes Chelsea don’t get as many opportunities but they score and that’s what makes the difference”

Wow. He, like me, mustn’t understand the game. He seems to think we dominated games too but doesn’t think we’re shit for not winning. Just that we need to finish off the moves. What an idiot eh Paul?

Same for Rosicky saying how we create chances but fail to finish them off… Wow. You should do one of those really very clever (they’re REALLY CLEVER!) ‘wisdom of’ things for Rosicky and Fabreas seeing as they too seem to think there is a difference between building up a move and then at the very last, not scoring.

But what would they know? They’re only premiership footballers.

  • 109. George Costanza  |  March 21st, 2007 at 6:36 pm

Thanks for the link you posted last night Pabz, but I’m unable to find anything on transfers from AW just the usual “we are building something special / we arent far away from other teams” nonsense. Also something about punctual trophies? I think he is talking a different language to the rest of the fans at the moment to be honest with you.

He is quoted on lots of sites as saying we would make no big signings unless someone would play here for the right wage which not only rules out most players straight away, but it goes back on his super players comment. He also said something about not wanting to risk buying anyone over 28(ha,ha as if)as they could buy their contracts out and he would lose them for free. This in effect means that we will never ever buy another player over 28yrs old while he is in charge, incredible.

It just gets better doesnt it eh….. Its comments like these that make me concerned and I dont think I am the only one.

We are two players away from something special, a genuine winger like Ribery and a finisher like Hunterlaar. Akinfeev if Jens leaves and we are ready to roll and I think most fans on this board feel the same way, though of course everyone favours different players and may have other names in mind.

These latest comments though indicate that it isnt going to happen and thats what I cant get my head around. It is about time we were given the truth this summer - If there is no money, then fine, tell us then we can allstop having false hope and accept another transitional season. If there is then why not spend what the board has given him and obviously budgetted for and take us to the next level without signing superstars like eto/buffon and risking the clubs future.

I hope we sign Bap, Ribery,Huntelaar and Akinfeev if Jens leaves, that would give us a stronger squad and address the problems we have had this season.I dont class any of them as superstars (yet) and would say they are all realistic targets. Dont forget we could raise funds by selling Ali, Jens, Freddie, Reyes.

  • 110. John  |  March 21st, 2007 at 6:43 pm

  • 112. Pabz  |  March 21st, 2007 at 7:13 pm

Apologies George, I sent you the wrong link:

    http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?thisNav=news&article=455433&cpid=703&title=Wenger+-+We+already+have+enough+strikers

He gives the spiel that we have players in every position but will buy if the right player comes along. I agree with him. We don’t need 3 - 5 players and we don’t need massive egos. But I think there are some players who could make all the difference - a Cantona/Pires/Bergkamp style signing - guys who win matches. Is it Ribery, Babel, etc. etc. I dunno. But I don’t doubt Wenger has a plan.

So don’t mind the newspapers who quoted contradictory statements from Wenger saying first he wanted super class, and then he had enough. It all came from the one interview. The reason the media reported it that way was cause of the order in which Arsenal.com released certain parts of the interview as text.

  • 113. Pabz  |  March 21st, 2007 at 7:17 pm

ps. in terms of the right wage, he is spot on. Ballack - £130,000 a week and for what? Indiffernce. Plus now Terry and Lampard are getting annoyed cause of their wage in comparison. A club has to have a ceiling. At Arsenal Thierry is a special case. In years to come Fabregas and maybe Van Persie will be too. But as a club we cannot start paying in excess of £80,000 on a regular basis. It sounds old-fashioned but really they have to want to play for the club otherwise they are just Cashley Cunts.

  • 114. No al Calcio Moderno  |  March 21st, 2007 at 7:34 pm

I think Tomas Rosicky is our key. Remember when he and Cesc played in the centre with Gilberto just behind at Old Trafford this season?? We passed them off the park (granted Arsenal have done that to alot of teams this year). Little Mozart is one of the most gifted footballers in Europe and I feel better knowing he is playing.

Some people are being seriously optimistic giving lists of teams with 3-4 players added (we aren’t playing football manager here). Your talking maximum 2 established players would be signed by Wenger. Highly likely a goalkeeper and perhaps a forward or wide man.

That is absolutely not what he said. He simplyreferred to FIFA rule changes soon to come into effect that will enable players once they reached the age of 28 and having served three years of their contract being able to buy out the remainder of their contract. All he is saying is that the rule changes will inevitably have an effect on the transfer market and the fees that are paid. It clearly makes sense to accommodate the effect of these changes in your transfer policy if you are to avoid huge losses and wasting your transfer budgets. You really should avoid taking a half heard, partly understood statement and then promoting a poorly researched point in order to attribute some non-existent failing to Wenger.

  • 117. George Costanza  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:15 pm

Read the new link you sent me, cheers - he does seem to be giving the impression that he is happy with the squad though I agree the full interview was fragmented as I had read bits and bobs on different sites.

There was another set of quotes after that one (sorry cant find the link though) where he said or at least was quoted as saying he couldnt see us signing any big name / super players as we make our own, just days after saying 1/2 supersuper players could come in.He appears to be leaning towards starting next season with the squad that finishes this season. I agree with most on this board that we need 2/3 proven players to help our youngsters and provide leadership when needed. If no-one is brought in this summer then I really think we will struggle and may have to settle for a scrap for 4th again.

At present there are too many players in the squad who are not good enough/too old and due to our injuries they have played more than they should have and have proved they are not up to it. Freddie,Ali,Hleb - who has the quality but doesnt fit into our team for some reason and maybe Jens who isnt going to get any better/sharper to name but 4, there are others but that depends on personal opinion.

I agree completely we dont need egos and dont want to start paying out 80-100grand a week for no return, thats why eto’o,buffon, torres are non starters if we are honest and thats why Newcastle havent won a pot in 38yrs, players have to have some passion for the club.

However the players I have listed wont be used to big wages especially Aknifeev and Huntelaar. We could get all 3 for the price of eto’o for gods sake. Thats why I think they are realistic options, Akinfeev and Ribery have already admitted they are flattered by our interest and would love to play for AW. KJH is a good striker but is not yet rated with eto’o,torres etc and would be good value. They are also young players which is wengers way and would represent good investment and would also have a good resale value if they didnt work.

I feel these 2 ( 3 if JL leaves ) would represent good business for the club and also good value in the long term. They are an investment in the future but each is already an experienced international despite their age, agree?

  • 118. Blog Head  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:16 pm

    That rule is bullshit.

They should be makng contracts more binding, not the other way round. If a player new he had to stay he’d try 100%.

Football is dying a slow, slow, painfull death.

Platini aint worthy to lick my balls

  • 119. *_Respect Highbury  |  March 21st, 2007 at 8:30 pm

Someone made a valid point about affordable players who could actually improve our squad, and dimensions. I seriously believe that the folloing list of players fill all the adequate pre-requisistes of a Wenger signing: young, hungry, pacey, technique to blaze and have it all tho prove:
    1) Babel
    2) Akinfeev
    3) I really like the idea of Dani Alves of Sevilla. Top suggestion (although he may cost a bit as he is now a Brazil international, also wanted by Real)
    4) Klas-Jan Huntelaar (spelling!). A fantastic natural finisher
    5) Micah Richards - for his versatility and technical potential (once again though - finance may prove an impediment to any potential deal)

The only potential pitfall in all of this is the potentially explosive relationship between RVP and Babel - although, they are good friends according to Van Persie.

I believe all those above players could improve the squad in some aspect or other.

Oh well. Nothing else but transfers to speculate on I suppose!
May I just add that I have just listened to that ‘Coldplay’ band everyobody keeps going on about. Can I just say that I believe it to be the biggest load of bollocks I have ever heard.

Narcoleptic drivel. That Chris Martin should be prosecucted by the state for assistant to murder. He is surely complicit in every suicide taking place up and down the country. Jeez….

    Bloggie: well said.
Football becomes more of a travesty with every passing day.

I also agree Blog Head, that the Chav players were intentionally being incendiary about the whole situation. I myself, was personally shocked to see Ca$hley Cunt, Terry and friends, running over to the other end of Shite Harte Lane (sorry Bloggie!) and celebrating in an over-raucous manner.

To see Lampard fist-pumping after one of the most abject and soporific performances ever to be seen in a big FA Cup match.

Of course the fan was wrong to do what he did - however, the ensuing kick by Drogba and Cuntley’s attack are both clear cases of assault. The man was ALREADY BEING RESTRAINED. To subsequently proceed to attack a man that posed no visible threat can only be equated to assault.
Aha - but because they are footballers, one rule for the common man, another for the over-paid pansies. Pathetic.

To add insult to injury - do you remember the Carling Cup final? Mourinho storms the pitch - and is charged for failing to control his players.
So why did his assistant, Manuel Rui Faria, feel it necessary to come onto the pitch and act as nightclub bouncer? Surely the police can do that if the stewards are too useless to do it?
Clearly another example of failing to control one’s team.

The classless nature of that ‘club’ never ceases to defy belief.

Mourinho sliding the turf at Camp Nou…Mourinho fist-pumping down the line as if he’d just won the Champs League final by thrashing Barca 8-0…And now Faria acting as Rambo.

Ridiculous. The FA will let Drogba get away with it as well.

    Cunts.

I think wenger has offered Jens 1 year and now Jens is considering if he wants to go elsewhere for 2 years. otherwise his career may end a year early if he stays with us. should he leave I do think wenger would buy a keeper, until then I doubt he is even thinking about it.
as wenger said he wont buy a striker and he wont buy a central midfielder. maybe he might consider buying a winger and the other possibility is a defender. despite the fact that scoring goals has been our problem, it would not surprise me in he slightest if he went out and bought a centre back and moved Toure to right back.
But if we dont improve our winger situation we wont win the league. simple as that.

  • 124. Pabz  |  March 21st, 2007 at 9:37 pm

Yeah George I think you’re making a good point. Rosicky style players - young but not inexperienced, excellent without being egotistical. I am confident Wenger is in the market for just that. He’s not gonna say much for fear of Real and co. doing their ususal last minute job. It’ll be another deal conducted in a Rosicky/Hleb/Diaby/Adebayor/Denilson manner - the first we’ll hear will be the official confirmation.

  • 125. Pabz  |  March 21st, 2007 at 9:39 pm

I don’t think is any chance whatsoever of Toure becoming a full-time right back. He’s one of the best central defenders in the premier league and with Gallas, they are at least as good as what United or Chelsea have. Hoyte and Eboue are both 23 and while imperfect have shown more than enough to suggest that in a couple of years they could be top class.

  • 126. hayabusa  |  March 21st, 2007 at 9:49 pm

Im sick of this stick about Senderos, John Terry weas a load of crap at that age as well, Senderos will be World Class however radical that idea seems. And as for these idiots saying get rid of gilberto, its absolute rubbish, why dont we get rid of Toure and Gallas as well… there’s a birght idea. Stop being muppets, arsenal are a different force without gilberto and wee need him in thse coming years. Diaby will learn soon enough and maybe could be slotted into the midfield somehow however he does not have the calness of a Gilberto Silva, which is what a team of youngsters need.

  • 127. George Costanza  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:01 pm

Exactly pabz, when anyone mentions on here that AW should buy and we need 2/3 players, other people explode and start coming out with “AW never signs big names” or “we cant compete with Manu/Chelski for players and we have to groom the youth for the future”.

You can buy players without spending 30/40M on one player and not every player would be coming from a glamour club and expect huge wages and hold the club to ransom.

As you say young but experienced, coming from a smaller club than AFC so they are happy with a fair wage relative with our other players, TH aside.

The three I mentioned fit the bill perfectly, Akinfeev for example is Russian number 1 at 18 I believe and could be our keeper for a decade. Ribery has played in a WC at 23 and KJH is groomed as the next RVN along with babel and RVP.

I hope these comments from AW are designed to keep us off the radar, if we get these players then I will be seriously excited for next season as we are not missing that much, 5% Wenger said - I would say more like 20% but these players could fix that.

It going to be an interesting summer whatever happens I guess?

  • 128. Gelbs  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:09 pm

You know, when I watch Arsenal now, it doesn’t even seem like “Arsenal.” A few unheard of youngsters compared to what we had 3 years ago etc. Guess that’s the point of rebuilding, but even so. Depressing. Denilson looks good, but I find it remarkable in parts after reading Palmer’s latest comment (bloke speaks alot of sense, but again, alot of his stuff is pure shite!), that a 19 year old Brazilian can go straight into this side pretty much. Then you have the kinda British player Muamba who is highly rated and compared to Vieira, not even getting a looking despite being at Arsenal awhile. I rate him (Denilson), but if he is gonna be used more next season alongside Fabregas, well, we can forget winning any honours. If Wenger sticks with his midfield now, we are finished. More I think about it, it really is gonna be the same as next season and maybe beyond. Yes injuries have hampered us and played a slight part in our shite season again, but like the CL Final last year, people using that to paper over our problems. RVP was on form until he got injured, but that goalscoring form could of just been a slight purple patch, he still isn’t that fantastic at goalscoring. But injury wise, we wouldn’t of done much better if our full 11 was available most the time. Our midfield has been almost full strength alot of the time, and RVP and Henry have played a fair few games, either way, every game almost regardless who is playing, we have struggled like shit. Teams will learn even more next season how to cope with us and jump on the defensive band wagon, as well as strenghten. We be left behind again and I bet Gallas is feeling such a mug and loser for joining us and looking over his shoulder at Chelsea. Depressing times. 3 years ago we had the World at our feet, now, well, call it pessimism, but if next season is like this one, there be a revolt. Our so called youngsters being built won’t even stick around to finish the so-called “master-plan”.

  • 129. Gelbs  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:14 pm

And people who say Wenger has no money may be correct, but look at the money he has had and wasted. 10 million on Reyes, potential 10 mil + for Walcott, 8 million Hleb, 8 million Adebayor, 2 mil Song. If Arsenal can’t even spend more money like 20-30 million on players, than that is a lie and total bullshit anyway. All the money from TV revenue etc, debt or not 30 million should be easily available. Wenger won’t spend it anyway. He said a few weeks back even if he had 100 mil he wouldn’t spend it on players to hinder the youngsters. As I said too, he has built a team with the not right players who can’t score, and he is too ignorant and loyal to change it.

  • 130. Azul_1913  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:15 pm

No I think we are at the 5% stage where one or two signings and a little luck could push on to the top.

Next season we fully settled in Emirates (rather than playing our first few home games ‘away’). Thierry and Robin will be fit and raring to go, Theo too. Hopefully Rosicky and Fabregas get some goals in there. We don’t concede many, we create lots… it’s just a little something extra we need. Look at Manc Scum! what it took from a well similar squad to the previous season to make the leap was for Giggs, Scholes and especially Ronaldo to step it up. We can do that.

Everybody repeats the same shit on here in general. And you should care, because as an Arsenal fan I am worried and fucking sick of it all. Watching Chelsea and United fight it out for all the honours whilst we have jackshit again. Lemme guess, I should fuck off and support Chelsea or United?

  • 134. Azul_1913  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:26 pm

No because you repeat the same thing everyday. We’ve heard it. Everyone’s argued with you about it. You have your view. Fair enough. But the debate’s been had. It’s been repeated and repeated. Let’s just let it play out now. You bore me and that has nothing to do with my concern over the club - your ill-informed and hysterical rants which you reproduce everyday on this blog BORE ME cause they are always the exact same. We’ll never win again with Wenger. He won’t spend money. He’s not got a clue what he’s doing. he makes us and breaks us. YES WE KNOW YOU’VE SAID IT EVERY DAY FOR A FUCKING AGE.

CHANGE THE FUCKING BROKEN RECORD MAN.

  • 135. Gelbs  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:26 pm

Oh and something else people haven’t pointed out. Yes we miss a shit load of passes, BUT alot of games I have seen, we haven’t even created anything clear cut. Particularly in the 2nd half. PSV, Everton of late and even Villa in the 2nd half.

  • 136. Gelbs  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:28 pm

    Load of chances*

  • 137. Azul_1913  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Everton… Aliadiere skying over the bar from the edge of the 6 yard box. Golden chance in a game of few clear cut opportunities for either side (Carsley hitting de bar from 25 yards is not a clear cut chance).

PSV (home)… Adebayor one-on-one just after goal as well as fab blazing over bar.

Villa… Rosicky broke into their half several times when he came on and shot twice and played in others. It is a weak example though as it was a team weakened by suspensions and injuries and away from home so less likely to create chances thoughout the game, especially when leading.

As for PSV away. They played badly and did fuck all in the 2nd half. An exception and not a rule.

  • 138. Gelbs  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Hardly call 2 chances in the 2nd half plausible. Few and far between and I remember Rosicky’s chances. They wasn’t clear cut ones so to speak neither. And anyone who thinks Rosicky and Hleb will get 10 goals or more next season is a fool. Rosicky might get half a dozen and Pleb about 2 max. Can’t wait until next season, gonna be so amazing.

  • 139. ey  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:42 pm

Psst…Gelbs, don’t want to piss on your parade, but Hleb already has 3.

Rosicky, I am sure, can get 10. And within 1 year or so, so will Cesc.

  • 140. Azul_1913  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:42 pm

Yawning here man. Do you know how to cut n paste? It’ll save u lotsa time tomoro when u put up de same shit again!

what the hell do u mean by ‘plausible’… i know u ignored the bit about a team with injuries and suspensions defending a lead away from home (plus against a team who had played twice in like 4 weeks while we’d been playing twice a week)

man u just talk shit without any brains behind it. u must be bored with your life.

  • 141. Gelbs  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:51 pm

Not as bored as watching Arsenal. Talk shit without any brains huh? Funny. Could of sworn last summer I predicted my concerns for Rosicky and Hleb not scoring enuff and Arsenal failure to win anything. Oh look, I am correct!! People that talk shit without any brains are people that slated then and now who said in November time that Arsenal will win the league come May. Never heard of them since.

  • 142. Gelbs  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:52 pm

Your right about Cesc Ey. Be 10 goals for Barcelona in his first season of 2008/09.

  • 143. Azul_1913  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:54 pm

hey the archives pretty good here. pull up the post last summer where u said that about rosicky. just curious ya know… u keep avoiding other people’s points man and changing the topic. do u not admit that it’s a bit dumb to be saying arsenal didn’t attack villa enuf in the 2nd half when weakened and tired and away and winning against a fresh team? go on defend that point. for a laugh.

  • 144. Gelbs  |  March 21st, 2007 at 10:57 pm

Err. Where did I say we didn’t attack Villa? I said we didn’t create any or many clear cut chances. And we were tired when we played Villa? Funny, both teams never prior played on the weekend so they had almost the same rest, though We had 7 days and Villa probably 10. Still a nice rest. Point defended.

  • 145. Gelbs  |  March 21st, 2007 at 11:01 pm

I suggest you go back to last summer etc and see my posts. You’ll find I stay corrected lol. All my slating turned out worthwhile and correct.

  • 146. Azul_1913  |  March 21st, 2007 at 11:03 pm

Aliaidere should have had a hat-trick in the first half.

Villa and Arsenal did not have the same rest you clueless cunt! before playing us they plaed on february 3rd and 10th and then March 3rd. 3 games in 6 weeks! We played 9 matches in that time! Big difference you moron. Your so easy to disprove it’s funny.

Couldn’t find any evidence you said rosicky wouldn’t score. i did find alot of comments like this though:

WE WILL WIN THE LEAGUE THIS SEASON JUST WATCH AND SEE

  • 148. se1gooner  |  March 21st, 2007 at 11:11 pm

what a genius! predicting we won’t win the league last summer. seeing as only one club can win and the standard is high that ain’t so profound.

as for a guy incorrectly predicting we’d win. he’s probably gonna be joined by a lot of chelsea and pool fans, and gooners in that club. football FANS that hope and believe. not moan and think if they moan ALWAYS then there’s a good chance that sometimes it might look like they knew what was gonna happen. a stopped clock still tells the right time twice a day and all.

    you’re a tool.

  • 149. Gelbs  |  March 21st, 2007 at 11:19 pm

Lol. I said more than just we won’t win the league. I was optimistic at times and more positive that we could do it, but still had big doubts of Wenger.

  • 150. AJ  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:44 am

All I hear at the moment is people crying out for players to come, players to go; who could replace who, who isn’t good enough, who would be better. These people are wasting their time in my opinion.

It’s been a difficult month to be an Arsenal fan, but cast your minds back to before all these ridiculous injuries took their toll; the team looked unstoppable, they showed glimpses of what they are capable of, mixing great football with a determined winning spirit. Our youngsters were unlucky to lose that Carling Cup final to Chelsea, so that shouldn’t be used as part of the “we’ve gone out of 3 cups in quick succession” argument.

Of course, the FA Cup and Champions League exits have hurt, but let’s not forget that it’s hurt the players as well. The key thing here is these players suffer together, and respond together next season.

Before our unbeaten season, the team were being ridiculed and called bottlers, even by their own fans, for letting the league title slip away from them. We supposedly needed reinforcements brought in for the difficult year ahead, but Wenger’s only signings were Jens Lehmann and Gaël Clichy. He kept that wounded team together, and they played like a team possessed the next season, determined to prove all their doubters wrong as they roared to the title unbeaten.

Since then Arsène Wenger has been building a new team; replacing the invincibles of Campbell, Píres, Vieira and Bergkamp with Gallas, Rosicky, Fabregas, van Persie and others was never going to be easy, but who’s to say this group of players aren’t capable of finding that spirit? We’ve seen it in glimpses over the last couple of years - the Champions League run last season, three wins over Liverpool already this season, forcing a late equaliser out of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, two very late wins against Man Utd, coming back from 2-0 down against Spurs, fighting on into extra time in the second leg of that tie, winning at Ewood Park with ten men, winning at The Reebok for the first time in a while. I could go on; there are a lot of positives to take from this season. There are of course quite a lot of negatives, but, like it or not, these are the highs and lows you are going to get from what we have to accept is a team still very much in transition.

If we bring in yet more new players next season there will be the whole excuse once more of needing to adapt and to get used to playing together. Those of you who are sick of us being a team in transition shouldn’t be asking for more new players, because that will just drag the transition out even longer. This team is talented enough to challenge on all four fronts, and if we keep this group of players together next season, they will come back stronger following the disappointment of this year. They will be sick of losing, because they know they’re better than that.

There is no one we can bring in who will make that much of a difference. We have Wenger, and he is a very highly respected coach. He has given these players the chance and they will want to repay that faith in them. Wenger’s great teams of the past have been built around a strong feeling of togetherness; all the changes to the squad since our unbeaten season hasn’t helped us in that area, but this team no longer needs any more tinkering in my opinion. It just needs to finish this season strongly in preperation for the next.

Despite the cup disappointments, we can still finish 3rd, and who knows, maybe even 2nd, which would show an improvement on our consistency from last season, during which we could not win away from home and by this time had already lost 10 or 11 games in the league, were close to missing out on 4th spot and were out of both the Carling Cup and FA Cup a lot earlier. Fact is, we’ve improved, and if not for our weird home form at the start of the season, and constant injury problems to key players, we’d be a lot closer to Man Utd who have used up all the luck in the country for much of the season, leaving little for us or anyone else to rely on.

I have faith in this team. Next year they can’t afford not bring Ashburton Grove its first trophy, but they can, and with a bit more time, and a bit more luck, they will.

  • 151. One_Touch_Genius  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 3:41 am

We do not really need any signings but ideally i would like to see ljungberg replaced, now im not doubting his ability i just think that a winger in the shape of ribery or quaresma have more to offer.

Jens will need replacing possibly but if he stays on then im not complaining he just needs to regain the form he was in last year.

Personally i think bringing back Bendtner is a good idea, he kinda like stays in one spot and lets hope thats in the box where he could become a poacher for us and not to forget his aerial ability.

Next season for the following players will be huge as they look to raise their game:
Cesc - already amazing but needs to add goals to his game.

Diaby - he needs to impose himself on games like PV4 used to and i dont see any reason why he shouldn’t.

Theo - apparently Wenger claims we’ve only seen 50% of what hes capable of, here hoping for a speedy recovery and some blistering pace one the wings once again.

I think next season Henry should return to silence his critics of late and show Drogba who is the best striker in the premiership, mind you i think Sheva may be a more likely contender considering his recent form…..

  • 152. gogogooners  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 4:00 am

    Blues players escape FA action
The Football Association have confirmed there will be “no formal disciplinary action” against any players involved in restraining a pitch invader during Chelsea’s FA Cup quarter-final replay win at Tottenham.

The FA have studied video footage of the incident in Monday’s White Hart Lane clash, where two supporters entered the field of play, one from each club, sparking a post-match fracas.

An FA spokesman said: “We have looked at all the available video footage and there will be no formal disciplinary action against any players.”

The governing body had already spoken to Tottenham and obtained video footage from various outlets, including BBC and Sky, which showed players restraining a Spurs fan who aimed a punch at Frank Lampard as the Chelsea players celebrated their win.

Timothy Smith, the 18-year-old Tottenham supporter, is set to appear at Haringey Magistrates next week after being charged with encroaching onto the pitch while Byron Wilkinson, the Chelsea fan who also ran onto the pitch after the game, was cautioned by police.

Just thought it was funny. Wonder what tape they were looking at?

  • 153. disco dave  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 4:21 am

    Wise words AJ.

I’ve been on the nargins for a few days just enjoying reading over the banter and debate. However, there is one point I have to make: COldplay are shite.

  • 154. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 6:52 am

lol. THAT’S the point you have to make Disco Dave?
So ‘restraining’ the guy is what the Chavski players were doing? Riiiigght, cos at first I thought it was more malicious than that. I’ve never done any police training or anything but could someone confirm to me that the best way to ‘restrain’ someone is to try to kick them when they’re already being held down by someone else?
I can imagine the police arresting some Chavski thugs next Saturday night outside a pub for beating up some lad and them saying “I was restraining him officer!”
Obviously the Spurs fan shouldn’t have run onto the pitch but as many people have said, you can understand it to some extent.

    wise word AJ.

We looking forward to next season, as we will have all the player back. Henry is simply a Legend, we cannot let one bad season do the talking. Henry is up there with Bergkamp and Ian Wright. and we will also be looking for potential next TH14 next season. Rmb Henry is 30 this year. We need to find a replacement soon and groom him to lead our 3rd and 4th generation of champion team.

  • 157. ron  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 9:17 am

henry is up there with ian wright!!!!!!!!

i think he was slightly better than wrighty.

ian was very good, but henry was the best in the world. was.

now his attitude is wrong, blaming world cup burn out, look at ronaldo & drogba.

saying the pitch is too big is desperate & pathetic.

i suppose when you have past your peak & are going downhill its difficult to accept. you will blame everything, as embrassing as it is.

  • 158. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 9:21 am

LIke all players when they get to his age they lose that yard of pace off the mark. It’s weird how it seems to happen over night though aint it. Maybe its when they have a bad injury they just dont recover as well.

Or maybe Henry’s just exausted from his nightly sessions with mister ‘I love ripping Theos ring appart’ Pat Rice.

  • 159. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 9:31 am

    Ron,
Agreed that Thierry is/(was?) a better overall player than Wrighty, although Wrighty was a far more clinical finisher. If only we could combine the two!
Neither Ronaldo or Drogba went as far as Henry in the World Cup thus had longer breaks before the season started and neither were playing Champs League games right till the end of the season, playing through the pain for a lot of that time as well. Drogba played 3 games at the world cup, how many did Thierry play again, it takes more than that to reach the final doesn’t it?
When I saw Thierry towards the end of the Champs League final when he was crouching down by the corner flag looking completely shattered I was thinking “He really needs a break, he’s going to be knackered by the end of the world cup.” World cup burnout is a fact, not an excuse, remember Petit & Dennis at the start of 98/99?
The pitch being bigger does sound a bit lame I’ll accept. But then again, I saw Lee Dixon talking about the fact that he used to know exactly where he was on the pitch positionally at highbury just by the faces in the crowd next to him that he saw every week and other things that became ingrained in his mind. It takes time to get used to a wider pitch. I always wondered if part of the reason that we were shit in so many of those European games at Wembley was because of the size of the pitch. But I do agree we cant use that exvuse next season.
Let’s see Thierry in a relatively injury free season before we write him off Ron, even if he’s only 80% of the player he was a couple of years ago next season that still makes him better than most other strikers in the Premiership.

  • 160. No al Calcio Moderno  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 9:35 am

“henry is up there with ian wright!!!!!!!!

i think he was slightly better than wrighty.”

Ron, with the greatest of respect to Wright he was never close to Henry.

If we base ourselves on Uniteds transition calender we’ll be top of the league this time next year. Next year has to be a title challenge year, full stop.

  • 161. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 9:41 am

That extra games in world cup thing is bollocks. So, two extra games makes someone play shit the next season. bullshit. Take some responsibility for gods sake. The rest of the world has to.

  • 162. No al Calcio Moderno  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 9:41 am

Just while we are on the pitch subject I’ve never bought into the “fact” dictated by many pundits and commentators that a large pitch suited Arsenal because of their pace. Because of the pace and lightning passing Arsenal could get on the attack and to the opposition penalty area in seconds at Highbury. It was like 5-a-side we’d scored before they new they had lost the ball. A bigger pitch allows teams room to make up for mistakes and to anticipate movement and passing of our players better - the ball needs to be carried further, the passes need to be longer.

  • 163. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 9:53 am

Surely they’d have thought of that whilst designing the pitch?
Its your home ground for gods sake. You need a world class striker on form just like the rest of the league, simple as that

  • 164. ron  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 9:53 am

post 160, you obviously cant/didnt read the post before mine.

ronaldo played in the semis & i think the 3rd place play off, which would be the same as henry!!

yes he may have played more in the champs league last season, but henry was given a 6 week break over xmas & he didn play that much at the start of the season!!!!!!!!!!

the picth being bigger than usual is no excuse for henry taking players on down the left like he used to do.

also the fact that he is now started to dive more, eg. fa cup v bburn, is that the pitch or the burn out???? or maybe attitude.

he was the best in the world. now he is nowhere near it. sentiment cant come into. thats a fact. sad but true.

henry thank you, but now its time for telly tubby bye bye

  • 165. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:00 am

Its young Theo I feel sorry for. He will now be the sole object of Pat Rice’s affections. That swine Pat will rip his hole appart by christmas

  • 166. Fabregrass  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:03 am

Count me in. My 2 cents for Diaby to play all games.

    Lehmann

    Clichy Gallas Toure Eboue/Djouru

    Gilberto

    Hleb Denilson Cesc Diaby Hleb

    Ade

    ————–
    or
    ————–

    Lehmann

    Clichy Gallas Toure Eboue/Djouru

    Gilberto Diaby

    Hleb Hleb
    Denilson Cesc

    Ade

    —————
Sell Almunia and Aliadiere. Keep the Beast for one more season. Buy one more decent winger and a keeper (and a striker too if possible). We should be challenging for the title next season

  • 167. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:04 am

One injury hit season and you’d sell our best ever striker? Wow are you fickle!!?? So you’d have sold Mark Overmars from your club when he broke his leg a few years before he joined Arsenal? Or Kanu when they discovered the hole in the heart thing a few years before he joined Arsenal?
Anyway, as you like your Facts. Thierry has played 16 league games and scored 10 goals and got 6 assists this year. Better than 1 every 2 games which is generally the mark most top strikers aim for. So even when he’s having a bad season and he’s carrying injuries he’s still a cut above. The fans who want us to sell him are perfectly entitled to their opinion…just like all the Americans who voted for President Bush are. Just cos you’re stupid doesn’t mean you don’t have a say. That’s democracy for you.

  • 168. Fabregrass  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:04 am

Instead of two Hlebs in my second formation, you could add one Rosicky ;)

  • 170. Ruralgoon  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:06 am

We could soon solve the ” is the pitch too big” debate by re-marking it so that it is smaller… but frankly that would be dumb! I’ve explained at length before about how you become used to the space in which you are operating, so I wont repeat it. The players are already much more at home in the emirates than they were at the start of the season, so that will continue to improve. The second thing to take into consideration is that the surface will also have been consolidated- a year older, more established turf, sub-soil firmer; playing surface will be faster, and therefore more like highbury. Trust me, it will make a difference.

RON; nice of you to insult me once I’d told you I was gone for the day. FYI I’m not a farmer. And being female does not preclude me from understanding football, having a brain and conducting intelligent conversation. I*’m interested to know what excuse you give for your lack of reason, logic and personality?!

  • 172. Fabregrass  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:06 am

Fans wanna sell Thierry coz of Myles Palmer’s bullshit propaganda. Nothing more than that.

  • 173. ron  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:14 am

hleb tries my patient, great ball control but simply isnt direct enough! a winger than cant shoot!! not good enough.

    cue little dutch.

bap?? a donkey that scored 4 of the easiest goals against l’pool, 2 tap ins against spurs & headed into an empty net in champs league.

    senderos = cygan

walcott, gets the ball, shits himself, he cant get rid of it quick enough

    t henry, rip.

  • 174. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:14 am

Fabregass, I thimk henry might hold a bit too much weight in the dressing room. Ironically making him a bad influence.

Adebeyor for instance shouldnt be trying to be the next henry, he should be trying to be Adebeyor - the greatest striker arsenal has ever seen.

  • 175. ron  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:19 am

interesting points on the playing surface, farmer girl, but how come the opposition, who have never played on it before can manage it quite fine??? its prob cos our players have played too many games…

  • 176. ron  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:25 am

maye we will be serious contenders for the uefa cup next yr as there is no world cup, our season is over in march, we will be used to our new pitch & our young players will be older & we have henry, the best player in the world.

    i guess time will tell…

  • 177. Amos  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:31 am

“interesting points on the playing surface, farmer girl, but how come the opposition, who have never played on it before can manage it quite fine??? its prob cos our players have played too many games…”

Given that, so far, we are unbeaten at the Emirates the opposition isn’t managing that fine.

  • 178. ron  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:33 am

a draw is not doing well. especially so many against shit teams. is it?

  • 179. tubes  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:40 am

its a settling in period ron - imagine moving from a 1 bedroom flat in to a 4 bedroom mock tudor with a double garage and room for a pony, you would naturally be a little lost and would take time to settle in and find out where everything is. simple really.

  • 180. Amos  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:42 am

Hasn’t been all draws though has it? Still only us and Chelsea unbeaten at home this season.

You are clearly bored ron. At the moment your posts are a bit like a mild case of athletes foot - faintly irritating.

  • 181. *_Respect Highbury  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:50 am

Morning all. It’s my Birthday today!
So, I will clearly not be telling you all how very old I am!

    Few points:

    1) Told you the FA would let the Chavs escape censure
    2) Do you think Didier Drogba read “The Rodney King Police Restraining Manual” before launching his kick into the fan?
    3) Thierry Henry will silence all his doubters next season. Remember, this is a man who has scored against every league team, in every single ground. He has won successive players of the Year, been named as the Top 3 FIFA World Player of the Year more than any other Prem player, has won Sports Writers player of the Year in succession, has won the ‘Onze D’Or’ trophy (very prestigious European Player of the Season French trophy), has won the France Football French Footballer of the Year FOUR YEARS RUNNING (that’s more than the great Zidane ever did), is one of the 3 all-time Champs League goal-scorers, has more goals of the season than any Prem player, has been voted the Premiership’s best-ever footballer and best-ever foreign import….etc….
HE HAS BEEN INJURED! GIVE HIM A CHANCE!
    4) Coldplay are rubbish. Why the hell does everybody rate them? I had nightmares about that album I heard last night!
    5) We are unbeaten at the Emirates. Not bad
    6) AJ Top post my man. Let’s wait until next season before castigating the team
    7) Bringing in 5 players will cause more disruption than necessary and require a settling-in period. A goalkeeper, a striker and perhaps one midfielder…is all the team would need. And that would count as only 2 signings as, Jens is a straight swap.
8- Wrighty is a better instinctive goal-scorer but Henry is superior in virtually every other department you care to name
    9) I think players do get burnt out at times. It is no coincidence how poor Ronaldinho, Henry, Deco…have been this season. However sometimes, yes, it is over-utilized as an excuse.
    10) Have a nice day everyone. I’m off…

  • 182. ron  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 10:56 am

disagreement is not a bad thing. i welcome other points of view.

a big house with a pony, really simple??? they are playing on an area of grass with the painted lines a little further away from eachother. thats as simple as it can get.

is a bigger pitch the reason why they are missing so many of these chances u speak about?

you say the pitch is affecting our game, but then you say we are playing fantastic football but we are missing so many chances, prob due to the injuries!!!!!!!

    make up your mind.

me bored?? yes, with all these contratictions & silly excauses.

    me intelligent. you not.

With Bendtner and a fit Henry and RVP we really dont need a new striker. we need goals from midfield. I have said it a hundred times.
I think Bendtner will be OK in the prem but we wont know until he tries it. you might say he has only scored 11 goals for Brum, but the championship is not as easy as you think. the teams at the top are better than the bottom teams in the prem. how many strikers have scored more than 11 goals in the bottom 5 prem teams? not many. Brum also share their goalscoring about and Bendtner has set up a lot of those.
He scored 18 goals for Arsenal reserves which is a huge amount ( I think they only play 18 games). OK so he is hit a quiet patch at the moment but dont write him off because of that. Bergkamp did not score a goal for about 7 months once, but he was still giving a lot to the team.
Also how many goals did Henry score when he was 18 to 20 years old. OK so he was a winger, but again not many.

Gallas and Henry are massively important to the team and to have them missing for the most part of the season killed us. I wont deny that if they are injured again next season we have no chance of the title. we need to hope our key players stay fit. thats obvious but it seems too many fans want wholesale changes but what we really need is to replace certain players who are past it like Freddie and probably Jens.

  • 187. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:11 am

Gazzap thats silly, Bendtner aint up against Terry, King, Carragher, Woodgate, Ferdinand, Dawson Campbell,
    Senderos (joke)

  • 188. tubes  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:13 am

gazzap thats 101 times you’ve said it now and im getting a little bored of it, change the subject :)
jens definatly needs replaced as he’s cost us this season and i cant see next season being any better, and someone who knows where the net is for the left / right of midfield would be good also.

  • 189. Ruralgoon  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:22 am

    Happy birthday, Respects… XXX

Ron; I know you’re stupid, so I’ll say it again… I MAY LIVE IN THE COUNTRY BUT I AM NOT A FARMER!!!!! along with about 90% of the shropshire population….

  • 190. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:29 am

Happy Birthday Respects, may you have a hangover tomorrow befitting a man of your years.
Jens is a player who I think probably should go, providing we get a quality player in to replace him (I wouldn’t want Manuel “Near post!! Cover your NEAR POST!!” Almunia) to be our first choice although he does generally do an okay job as a 2nd choice.
I wouldn’t want us to sign another striker. We have enough there for the season when Bendtner comes back and we get Baptista back on the plane to Madrid.
In mkidfield Freddie is past his best but I think would be good cover next season in case we get a ‘first day of the somme style’ injury list like we have this season. Another wide player wouldn’t be a bad thing as we are limted there in terms of reserves.
I agree with AJ’s post earlier in that I don’t want us to sign players for the sake of it and risk disrupting the team. Great post by the way AJ.
And just to reiterate, Thierry must stay. How any Arsenal fan would want to see him go anywhere else is beyond me. I just don’t know if I could stand seeing him score in another teams shirt. Doesn’t bear thinking about.

  • 191. Amos  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:31 am

As Wenger has already said that Bendtner will come back to the first team squad next season he clearly agrees with gazzap. There must be something there and next season will tell.

  • 192. ron  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:36 am

bentdner? luploi scored shit loads in the reserves & he is going for free! 11 goals is good in the c’ship?? earnshaw has got twice as much & he couldnt even get on for west brom.

if were relying on him to save us next yr then were in trouble.
etoo. just one big signing, it will not bankrupt us. the success he would bring us would almost pay his fee back alone.

ps farmer girl, go away & do the dishes or play with a dollie.

  • 193. Amos  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:51 am

Ron, your ‘big signing’ suggestion the other week was Jan Koller - now you say you are worried whether Bendtner is good enough?

And dismissing Ruralgoons more rational views because she’s female is as bad as claiming you are a thick just because you are Irish.

  • 194. Ruralgoon  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:53 am

FUCK OFF YOURSELF, RON. Your’e just showing yourself up as a sexist bore/boar, to add to your other personality flaws…

Eto’o has an attitude problem so large it makes reyes and anelka look like level-headed reasonable people. Whyever would AW buy more problems?

  • 195. Ruralgoon  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:55 am

To the other more rational people on here; apologies for my rather strong outburst….

  • 196. ron  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:56 am

hey farmer girl, would you be interested in going for a few drinks this weekend?

  • 197. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:57 am

Ron-The reason Lupoli is going ‘For free’ is that he refused a new contract and his old one is expiring. Also, Lupoli is a tiny skinny little bloke and, although he’s talented, I doubt he could have handled it in the Prem. As well as being talented Bendtner is huge.
the success Etoo would bring us would pay the fee? My arse! One player doesn’t gaurantee success, and he is well known as a huge ego. Do we really need another one? Also, what of RVP? He had a great first half of the season and looks better every year, you’d just shove him back on the bench?
Also, you’ve been saying how past it Thierry has been and how shit he’s been basically (I’m paraphrasing) this season. Etoo has also had injury problems this season and has scored 7 goals. Does that mean there are Barca fans out there calling for him to be sold like you are Henry?

  • 198. gazzap  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 11:58 am

we dont need any further proof that ron is thick other than to read his outrageous comments.

Eto’o aint happening. get in the real world

    OK team for Anfield

    Lehmann
    Eboue toure Gallas Clichy
    Hleb Cesc gilberto Diaby
    Rosicky
    Adebayor

    Easy 2-0 to us.

no id have rvp with etoo.

one player doesnt make a team, but apparently our team is already lethal but were missing chances etoo would stick em away, then we’d win things.

  • 204. Wenger  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:09 pm

it is more important that he focuses on developing the potential in his young team than on winning trophies.

Gooners are not used to not winning a trophy in recent times, and the Frenchman admits that it is something he is not used to as well.

“It is the first time it has happened so it is frustrating.

“But it is a good test for our unity and our strength.

“You always have to take it as a challenge, to show that we are stronger and are inspired by what we can achieve together and with the type of football we want to play.

“There is something bigger inside the Club more than the punctual trophies you go for. We know that and want to show we are guided by it.

“It is about the development of the team, the future of the Club and the football we want to play. Trophies are a consequence of that.

“You cannot say because you do not win a trophy that you stop.

“Look what has happened before in the history of Arsenal; they have been 25 years without winning a trophy.

“I am as frustrated as the fans are, but I feel as well that it is not the only target and only aim of a football club.

“If you do not win a trophy, you try to continue to play and be as good as you can.

“That is bigger than just punctual trophies. But, of course, they are important as well because they are a consequence of all your work.”

Even though we may be in bad patches. But its mean another good run is coming soon… Arsenal always have bad patches, before another set of good run. Remember 98, 02,04… Some example to quote.

It’s taken a while, but it’s finally happened. “Mad” Jens, Arsenal’s crazy German goalkeeper, has finally won over the Arsenal fans and is now firmly entrenched as Arsenal’s number one goalkeeper. An outstanding series of performances last season saw Lehmann break the record for most minutes in Champions League football without conceding.

Abou Diaby has recently returned to action for Arsenal after missing most of the season with a horrible ankle injury, suffered in reckless challenge against Sunderland last season. He has looked composed since his return, making some useful contributions in the heart of Arsenal’s midfield, and along the way justifying some fans’ comparisons to Patrick Vieira.

Cesc Fabregas has certainly repaid the faith shown to him by his manager with some stellar displays in the heart of Arsenal’s midfield. Still only a teenager, Cesc’s vision, passing and movement are a class apart. If all goes to plan, he is a future Arsenal captain.

Kolo Touré has really come of age since his move to central defence. He is now regarded as one of the finest centre-halves in the Premiership, and is senior member of a very young Arsenal back four. His pace, power and recovery are amongst the very best in the business.

Philippe Senderos is a young Arsenal player who has really made his mark on the first team. A central defender, he really came into his own when injury and other issues kept Sol Campbell out of the Arsenal side last season.

Signed for Arsenal in May 2006, Tomas Rosicky was signed as a replacement for the exiting Robért Píres, also inheriting Píres’ number 7 shirt. A playmaker blessed with incredible natural talent, Rosicky had an impressive World Cup scoring two goals in the Czech’s win over the USA.

Freddie Ljungberg, Arsenal stalwart, is slowly beginning to lose his influence on the Arsenal team. Having relied on his goals from midfield for so long, Arsenal will be shifting their focus onto Rosicky and Hleb to find the back of the net it seems. Two seasons ago, Freddie scored 14 times. Last season he was only able to contribute 2 goals.

Julio Baptista joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in the last few minutes of the 2006 summer transfer window, with former midfielder José Antonio Reyes moving in the opposite direction. Baptista is a powerfully built attacking player, who can operate in midfield or as a striker.

William Gallas is an experienced and assured defender, capable of playing in any position in the back line. His knowledge of the game and strength underline his value to the current Arsenal team. Joining Arsenal in the last few moments of the summer transfer window, he takes the place and playing number of Ashley Cole.

Definitely one of the most skillful and technically brilliant players on our books, Robin van Persie looks like a young man with big things ahead of him. He came to Arsenal with a huge amount of both talent and ego but is starting to settle down now and we’re starting to see the best of him.

Alex Hleb had a rather up-and-down first season in English football, but I think it’s fair to say that overall he has shown Gooners everywhere that he certainly has the potential to be a future star for Arsenal.

The list of superlatives that describe this modern-day champion is gigantic. As well as being arguably the best player in the world, Henry is now Arsenal captain and marked his first season as skipper by leading his charges into the Champions League final for the first time, picking up the PFA Player of the season award, and becoming Arsenal’s all time record goalscorer.

Denilson is a talented young player from Sao Paulo with big things ahead of him. He has received rave reviews from fans back home in Brazil and will be hoping to win over his new club.

Mathieu Flamini is a versatile French midifelder who is full of running and never seems to tire. Due to a number of injuries to key personnel, last season he played the majority of games in an unfamiliar left-back role - a position he surprisingly excelled in.

Alexandre Song is another young prospect plucked from the obscurities of French club football and may yet go on to do great things. Originally signed on a year’s loan, Song has now had that deal converted to a permanent one. A physically gifted footballer, he adds power to Arsenal’s midfield.

It was a difficult 2004/05 season for Gilberto Silva, as a career-threatening back injury kept him out from September 04 until April 05.

Johan Djourou is a talented young central defender with great things ahead of him. Ivorian born, but Swiss by nationality, Djourou made rapid progress last season with many appearances for the first team.

Mart Poom joined Arsenal on the last day of the transfer window in August 2005. A veteran of over 200 games in England, Poom is certainly one to add experience in the dressing room.

Gaël Clichy is a hugely promising left-back who has always looked at home in the Arsenal first team when called upon. Equally at home attacking the left flank as defending it, Clichy looks to have a long Arsenal career ahead of him.

Emmanuel Adebayor is a Togolese striker who joined Arsenal in January of 2006. He has been likened to the ex-Gunner Kanu because of his style of play and gangly movements on the pitch. Adebayor has chosen the number 25 shirt because he idolises Kanu, who wore the shirt before him.

After initially impressing during a trial period at the start of the 2004/05 season, Emmanuel Eboue joined Arsenal in January 2005 from KSK Beveren for a reported £1.5m fee. He immediately made his debut in Arsenal’s 2-1 FA Cup win over Stoke City, playing at right back. After being initially denied a move due to work permit issues, Eboue became eligible to join the club after marrying his Belgian girlfriend at the end of 2004.

Jeremie Aliádíère has had a tough time of it in the early stages of his career. Since joining at the beginning of the 1999-00 season, he has had a horrible run with injuries and has struggled to make an impact in the first team.

Justin Hoyte has risen up the youth ranks at Arsenal to be on the fringes of the first team. He can ply his trade at right-back, and has also recently made appearances at left-back.

Theo Walcott comes to Arsenal as one of England’s most exciting prospects. The young winger/forward caught Arsène Wenger’s eye from the young age of 14, before making a name for himself in Southampton’s first team, scoring 5 goals in 13 appearances.

Averaging a goal a game in the Reseves for Arsenal last season, young Italian striker Arturo Lupoli looked like he had a bright future at the club.

The latest highly promising left-back from the Arsenal production line, in the Clichy and Cole mould. Still only seventeen, Traore has shown huge promise in his appearances so far this season - and could be pushing Gaël Clichy for a first team spot very soon.

With this team how we can lose??? Let wait for next year pals.

    Rgds

    AJ

As for Vela, think shd be better than lupoli.

  • 210. No al Calcio Moderno  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:28 pm

Who knows with young players, generally Wenger seems to have them in and around the first team at 17/18 if he genuinely thinks they are going to make it; Anelka, Fabregas, Denilson this year.

I’d just love us to win the league and then retain it.

    Vela better than Lupoli……

Welcome hime back to arsenal…. Aj good job

Re-sign the Dickov and the world is yours

not biased in anyway?? its so obvious that u are saying good things about this team so all these clowns will say “excellent post AJ” blah blah

i will state now that unless we bring in someone unexpected we will not win the league or champs league.

  • 214. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:33 pm

    No al Calcio Moderno,

You’ll also find Wenger has them in and around his bedroom at the age of 7/8

  • 215. CRonaldo  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:34 pm

Arsenal are improving, but sorry to say that MANU have the luck this season. Arsenal have improve over last season, the only thing is about finishing.

Henry is always my idol, hope he recovered and make EPL more lively again.

  • 216. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:35 pm

    Good post AJ
We haven’t been able to start introducing Vela into the first team squad yet cos of Work Permit issues which is why he’s been out on loan. I think (Anybody know for sure??) that he should be able to play for us next season. Another one who looks good for the future although you never can tell with young players.

  • 217. Ruralgoon  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:37 pm

I’m sure I read somewhere that we now had a work permit for vega but for the life of me I can’t remember where!

  • 218. Berg97  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:38 pm

Hi Ron!!! Are you a hard-core Arsenal Fans??

  • 219. No al Calcio Moderno  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:40 pm

  • 221. Frank  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:41 pm

    Good Post AJ.

As for Ron… please stay calm, I believe as a Arsenal Fans, we must be united and support the team all the way, so that we can stay thru this bad patches.

  • 222. Jordan  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:47 pm

    Well done AJ, and Frank.

Very glad to hear that. Well Arsenal out there. Lets Unite and support the team. Let aim high next season, and hope no injury worries again for the team. To play beautiful football and WIn were be better than play lousy football and win(Like Chelsea and MAnU). Arsenal must stay patient before creating a bunch of hungry youngsters.

  • 223. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:48 pm

    Frank,

You seem like a level headed guy. Dont you think someone needs to keep Pat Rice away from young Theo? How the hell can you expect him to get down the wing when all he can think about is his ring

  • 224. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:50 pm

    Jordan,

Man U play great football. Love him or hate him (Ferguson) we all have to except what a good manager he is. His teams have everything - Youngsters, experience, steel, skill, british, foreigners.

He’s a prick but he knows his shit

  • 225. Terry  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:52 pm

Only a united team were ever win EPL… See 98,02,04 team. and now chelsea and Manu… they are very united at the moment. As for arsenal 7 first team member out either thru supension or injury, but we must not panic and play as a team to win. Now we may not have the individual brillaint from TH14,Bergkamp, Wrighty or Pires… but now the team is Fab,Rosicky,Adebayor,Ali,Bap(playing as a team)…..

Let wait for RVP,TH14 and the rest to be back.

  • 226. Jordan  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:55 pm

Have to agree with Blog Head…. ManU play better than season, but luck is always by their side this season. You see.

  • 227. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:57 pm

Terry, so if you were the manager you wouldn’t sign anyone major in the summer?

  • 228. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 12:58 pm

    Jordan,

    Fortune favours the brave

  • 229. Raymond  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:00 pm

yep Manu have the luck this season. but wait… i think they will only win EPL this season, which is enough for them.

  • 230. *_Respect Highbury  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:00 pm

Blog Head, Rural, James Marsh et al….many thanks for the birthday wishes!

    Good squad overview AJ.

Vela cannot yet come to Arsenal as a result of our bloody pathetic Home Office, who allow the likes of Carlos Marinello (remember him?) come through, but will not allow one of world football’s biggest talents, who won Mexico the Youth World Cup almost single-handedly, becoming top-scorer in the process….well, they will not grant him his permit yet. So we have to keep him out on loan and hope to get him a work permit on the basis of exceptional talent (bit like we did with Denilson)….

Anyhow off to the pub now. Fobbed off work today. I have not done this all-day drinking thing since I was 22 I think.
Wonder how it will go down……

P.S Well done on the squad review AJ. Also, like the fact you omitted Aliadiere lol….

Have a nice day all. Thierry Henry.

OH ALMOST FORGOT: Despite what Sly Sports and the right-wing vile press would have you believe about Arsene Wenger being a ’sore loser’…did anybody see Red-Face’s outrageous tirade at Geoff Shreeves of Sly Sports? Disgrace.
But anyway he’s British so it’s only “passion”.
    Twats.

VIVA RICHARD BRANSON! MURDOCH WILL NEVER GET A PENNY OF MY MONEY!

Ok might as well go bore people down the boozer with such inane banter instead…..

  • 231. Terry  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:02 pm

Well I guess probably a couple of signing. A New GK, and a Winger. just for back-up. in case we have been hit badly agian either thru injury or suspension.

  • 235. Flying Dutchman  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:13 pm

HEy good review from AJ once again.

ManU are playing winning mentality football at the moment, they play with simple concept, like cross the book into the box and also cut in by winger (giggs and ronaldo) with ease. If not ask ROnaldo to dive abit here and there to win. Good job… at least they come to the pitch juz to win.

  • 236. Amos  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:13 pm

“i will state now that unless we bring in someone unexpected we will not win the league or champs league.”

Employing the Gelbs tactic of claiming great predictive wisdom now are you? Hardly sticking your neck out though is it. You would also get acceptable odds against ManU and Chelsea for next season even though either of those must be favourites.

We are capable of competing next season, with or without imports, but the likelyhood is that if a player or two of the right calibre is available we will bring him in.

  • 240. Fab15  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:21 pm

With the Premiership entering its final stages, The Red Devils hold a six-point lead over the defending champions.

Spanish ace Fabregas admits it would be dangerous to dismiss Chelsea’s chances of overhauling United over the final eight games.

But he concedes that he would expect Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to hold on to their advantage and win the title for the first time in four years.

“Right now Man Utd, they are playing really well and playing good football,” Fabregas told Sky Sports News.

“Chelsea, they are behind six points and you never know what can happen in football - there are still nine (sic) games to go.

“It’s always difficult to predict who is going to win, but at the moment I think Man Utd deserve to win.”

  • 241. Fab15  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:24 pm

    Re-sign the Lukic

  • 245. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:42 pm

    Ron,
Are you referring to the video clip they showed where Eddie Murphy (During the 80s) was saying that he was worried cos of AIDS. He said that gay guys would kiss their female friends on the lips and then straight guys would catch AIDS from kissing the girls??
If so then that’s well fucking out of order. They showed that clip to show what an ignorant fuck he was/is, did you think they were trying to show how funny he was??
Apologies if I’ve misread your comment, can you clarify it for me?

  • 246. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Ah, John Lukic. I was living abroad when we resigned him and the first I knew of it was seeing a picture of him on the back pages picking the ball out of the net when we lost 3-0 to Rangers in a pre season tournament.. I was like “Oh crap! He’s back!”

  • 249. blog head's mum  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:53 pm

James - wasn’t Eddie Murphy using ‘ironic’ humour in that sketch? Don’t tell me bill hicks, larry david, ricky jervais haven’t made homophobic comments in jest…

  • 250. Ruralgoon  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:58 pm

Sorry, Ron; I have a severe adverse reaction to tractor drivers. It usually involves swearing loudly at them and smacking them over the head with a shovel until they give up and go away, so I would suggest a more reasonable mode of transport if you value your life…

  • 251. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 1:59 pm

I didn’t spot any irony but I guess I should give him the benefit of the doubt.
Yeah I’m sure they do, but it doesn’t make up the proportion of the act that gay jokes did in Eddie Murphys. It also wasn’t as vicious. Also Bill Hicks made jokes about himself giving people blow jobs and stuff, could you imagine Murphy doing that? Larry David humour is about how socially inept HE is, he generally makes more fun of himself than anyone else. I couldn’t imagine Murphy doing that.
The other characters and their traits in Larry David’s work generally just lead to him making an ass of himself.
Gervaise is the more ironic of the group I’d say, but again the joke is often on himself.
But I take your point that maybe it wasn’t as malicious as I thought.

  • 252. blog head's mum  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 2:08 pm

True James, I take your point about the others I mentioned being more self-depricating. I only saw that Murphy clip on the show you mentioned, and my inital reaction was that it seemed an overreaction to ban the entire ‘Raw’ stand-up video. However, if it is just a tirade of homophobic abuse throughout his act, then he’s obviously pretty limited (as well as being a homophobe).

  • 253. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 2:08 pm

Bloggie-Just found this on wikipedia, I don’t see why he’d have apologised if he had meant it ironically, wouldn’t he have just said that he was being ironic?

“Murphy’s comments about gays and AIDS in his standup routines were considered so vicious that some years later he apologized for the remarks”

  • 254. Dick (aka Willy)  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 2:08 pm

    Bonjour, people!

Haven’t posted on here for a while, partly because how I acquired this next very interesting piece of goss….

I was at the Zidane/Ronaldo UNDP match in Marseilles on Monday and was accredited for the press-zone after the match. Gallas and Baptista were both there (played a half each - Gallas for Zidane’s team and Baptista for Ronaldo’s), but what was interesting is that they were both speaking a lot with Samir Nasri. It seemed like the gist of their conversation was about trying to coerce Nasri into joining the Gunners.

I remember we were linked with Nasri a few seasons ago when he was just seventeen (now 19) - and he’s a player Wenger has publicly come out and said he admired. Could he be the “super, super-star” Wenger is referring to? Nasri has just been called up to the French squad and has a games to goals record for Marseilles of 58 appearances (42 starts) and 17 goals. He’s a midfielder! And he’s only 19!! Check him out on YouTube, he is amazing.

Also, might find this funny - they had the Tottenham v Chelsea game live on French Cable and Gallas absolutely pissed himself laughing when Carvalho gave away a penalty. Read into that what you will…

  • 255. Gelbs  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 2:13 pm

Fuck knows what Gallas has or had to laugh about. Be a case of he who laughs last, laughs the longest. Aka Cole and Chelsea.

  • 256. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 2:17 pm

What language were they speaking Dick? Do you speak French (Assuming it was French)?

  • 257. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 2:18 pm

    I speak Klingon

  • 258. tubes  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 2:22 pm

dick - did baptista play well?

  • 259. Dick (aka Willy)  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 2:28 pm

They were speaking in French, and although I’m French (my mother’s side) I was born and bread entirely in England so my French isn’t the best. However, it’s adequate enough - and yes, Gallas was talking to Nasri in French and it sounded like Baptista was too (I didn’t know he could speak French!)

I wanted to try and speak to them but they were cornered off in the ‘player’s area’ (the Marseilles officials were right sticklers) but Gallas saw me in my Arsenal jacket and gave me a thumbs up - that’s about as close as I got to them.

Gallas had a good, solid game at the back - but to be fair, it was a very easy game for him. Baptista had a few decent efforts - but again - he was playing against long-retired defenders like Laurent Blanc and Le Bouef. However, he did nutmeg Sergio Ramos a couple of times!

does anyone know how u get a trail for arsenal?

  • 262. Blog Head  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Sniff around untill you smell onions, then you will be on the arsenal trail. Keep following the trail untill the smell is unbearable and you find Paul Dickov weeping outside an empty building with a statue of Eddie Mcgoldrick outside.

  • 263. ron  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 3:32 pm

where is LD today? licking up to the man? what would kurt cobain say, eh?

  • 264. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 3:40 pm

What is it with you and Dickov Bloggie? Is it just the name? Or the fact you didn’t think he was very good?
I remember him getting a great goal for us against Spurs many moons ago. I actually always thought of him as a useful player to have in the squad, the kind that opposition fans hate as he’s a nasty piece of work on the pitch. Sometimes you need a forward like that though.

  • 265. Ruralgoon  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 3:47 pm

  • 269. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 3:58 pm

He IS the epitomy of ‘Short Mans Complex’. The actual definition of which is

“An angry male of below average height who feels it necessary to act out in an attempt to gain respect and recognition from others and compensate for his abnormally short stature. ”

Now imagine that definition with a scottish accent and wearing a Blackburn shirt….

  • 270. Ruralgoon  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Nope! Only ever had a crush on marc overmars and very briefly on Silvinho!!

  • 271. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 4:01 pm

    Re:Dickov
I remember he really pissed me off in the cup semi final when Cesc had studs raked down his shin right in front of Dickov, and Dickov could clearly be seen and heard over the bbc microphones accusing him of faking the injury and telling the ref the same crap. All this when a) he saw exactly what had happened and b) Cesc had a big bloody mark down his shin!

  • 272. blog head's mum  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 4:04 pm

wasn’t overmars gay? doesn’t prevent you from fancying him obviously. Personally, I liked cygan. His big shiny head was a really turn on.

  • 273. Gelbs  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 4:12 pm

I loved slapping Cygan’s head as he went down on me. Mmmmm xxx.

  • 274. J Marsh  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 4:19 pm

I don’t think Overmars was gay, although I had heard the rumours. I also read a rumour recently that Jermaine Jenas is, as well as Matt Taylor. Not that I care if they are, I do find it hard to beleive that of the hundreds of premiership players there isn’t one who …………..(Insert bad football pun here, ‘plays for the other team’, ‘likes a good hard tackle’ etc etc………….). In a way I’d be proud if Arsenal actually had the first top level player to come out.
My wife has a thing for Freddie Ljungberg, but hell, if it helps me get to watch games on the telly without her complaining then I’m happy with that.

Hey…so on Dick’s advice I went to YouTube and watched a 3 minute clip of Samir Nasri. He shows some awesome dribbling skills…but 3 minutes he scores one sitter, hits 4 easy balls at the goal keeper, shoots wide a number of times. Well I still really don’t know shit about the player and he may be totally awesome, the clip was hardly inspiring given that everyone on the board seems to agree we need goals, not pretty dribblers!

  • 289. ooh 2 b ah  |  March 22nd, 2007 at 8:37 pm

I do wish that we would concentrate on getting outr football right, instead of coming out with comments about other teams, such as the one about the mancs growing weaker in the last ten minutes……we have conceeded and lost five games out of the last 8 in the last 10 minutes. Trench Diaby is going to be the man to watch next season, he looks a great prospect.
Has anybody else noticed the way Morinho has been quick to throw an arm around Eboue followed by a wisper in his ear at our last couple matches against Chelski or am I getting paranoid?

  • 293. madhu_bangalore  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 4:25 am

Thought i will add my two cents worth to the Arsenal talk. Its been a pretty disspointing season. Had a horrible feeling wacthing the Everton match as it progressed at 0-0. We would definetly concede a goal in the later stages and it hapenned. The condition were not the best. read that snowing was the worst in the last centuary or something. Strange that i have travelled to Birmingham many times during spring, but has never eperienced any snow.
Well looking ahead, we ahve a youg squad wih the spine of the squad in Gallas-Gilberto-Henry being very experienced. Whether new players come or not, in my opinion there are couple of things that i feel should happen.
Defence - Have a settled back four first line and second line as well barring injuries. That would give time for the centerhalf’s read Toure-Gallas to develop a good partnership. Eboue and Clichy will gel well with them. During injuries, it becomes difficult, but the key is not to plat people out of positions. Center halves should always get the priority. For instance toure and gallas could have played in the center against everton.
Midfield - Gilberto and Diaby should be the HM. Other playmakers like Fb, Denilson can play freely. I have an opinion here on wingers. I have read RH and others make a point that we have never had classical wingers barring probably overmars and always depend on ovelapping runs of our wing backs. But i have slight difference of opinion here. We moved to Emirates and made the pitch bigger to give width to the team. This was ostensibly to counter the arguement that We are quite narrow in the middle during build up. So either we have classicla wingers atleast one or reduce the size of the picth to that of Highbury. If we have a bigger picth then we should use it to our advantage.
Forwards - I think we need a player who can get goals from headers and also be in position to get scraps and score within the 8 yards. I guess with our intrictae palys there wiuld be lost of oppurtunities to get goals for this kind of player. If Bendtner is the guy then so be it. We have options covered for other eventualities in Henry, Persie, Ade etc..

I looking forward to the tarnsfers and the season there on. Fresh Henry, persie could be the key. Go on guys rip on this post.

Arsenal have struck a deal that will see French teenager Gilles Sunu move to Emirates Stadium on a four-year contract in the summer.

Skysports.com first revealed back in December that The Gunners had won the race for the highly-rated Chateauroux striker, beating Premiership rivals Liverpool in the process.

Now Sunu has turned 16, it has been confirmed that the French youth international will continue his footballing education under Arsene Wenger in North London after the two clubs came to an agreement.

Arsenal are believed to being paying between €1-4million (£680,000-£2.71million) for the teenager who is hoping to become the latest French starlet to shine for The Gunners.

Sunu will move to England in July and is expected to put pen-to-paper on the four-year deal when Chateauroux president Michel Denisot meets Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein in April to finally ratify the deal.

Wenger already has a fine selection of youngsters at his disposal in North London, and the capture of Sunu demonstrates his focus on youth recruitment shows no sign of slowing

Takeover rumours are driving the price of Arsenal shares to a record high and putting millions on the value of the investments held by the ten directors. The share price closed last night at £6,200, up £900 in a week since Danny Fiszman, the largest shareholder, sparked speculation by offloading some of his stake.

The most spectacular investment, though, is that of David Dein, the vice-chairman, who first bought into Arsenal in 1983, spending £290,250 on 1,161 shares. Peter Hill-Wood, the chairman, said at the time: “I think he’s crazy. It’s dead money.” Last night, Dein, a lifelong supporter, was sitting on a stake worth about £57 million.

However, that stake can be realised only if Dein puts his shares up for sale and the club and analysts dismissed the prospect of Arsenal — the last of the Barclays Premiership’s Champions League clubs to be in English ownership — being sold to foreign investors. The club said last night that there has been no approach and there is no interest in selling.

Supporters, though, are baffled by the astonishing rise in the price of shares and who is buying them. Shares were priced at only £700, with the club valued at £39.2 million, when Arsenal joined the Plus Markets Group, a “junior” stock market specialising in small companies, in October 1995.

any comments? about the above news.

  • 297. J Marsh  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 6:37 am

Is Sunu any good? Has anyone seen him?
I don’t really know what to make of the share thing Dennis, just thought I’d acknowledge your post!
Just to echo what has been said many times on the board we do need a few players in but we have to remember how few times this season we’ve been able to name our full strength side. I really think we would have been much stronger if we hadn’t been so unfortunate with injuries. I know every team gets injuries but not to this extent! As I’ve said, I’d sign a couple of players but not to the extent of 5 or 6 that some people want.
Respects-How’s the health?? Bet the hangover is a killer, the worst one I ever had was the day after my stag do. I threw up in my friends house, on the train, on a bus (Rail replacement) and then at my house again. I reached the stage when I wondered if I was dieing and decided it wasn’t an unattractive option.

    P.S Another Withnail quote- “Scrubbers!!!”

Hi guys. J Marsh I feel absolutely sick! Aaaagh…my stag do was not actually that bad…this is shocking in comparison though! Found this new drink…a nice fruity Jamaican tropical rum called Coco KANU (lol). Picked it cos it had an ex-Arsenal player’s name…goes down very easily but Christ…feel shite…got turfed out of the opera/ballet last night. My wife is still not talking to me although she made me breakfast this morning (fry-up’s always good!)

Anyway the on;y thin I’ll say about footie: MAHDU BANGALORE you have a point about us using thw whole width of the pitch, we don’t do it enough. Specially on the right-side if Eboue is out. We need Huntelaar. Fantastic movement in the box, strong in the air and his link-up play is actually brilliant. Much better than Baptista’s…Babel actually reminds me of Thierry Henry when he was at Monaco. Lots of raw speed and potential - looks an Arsenal prototype to me. When Wenger calls it a day, Rijkaard should take over me reckons.

    Anyhow…have a nice day all!

  • 303. J Marsh  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 11:08 am

I hate international week, no exciting fixtures to look forward to and no games that I really care about. All I ever hope for these weekends is that Arsenal players don’t play in case they get injured.
It feels like we’ve all got the ‘end of the season blues’ to me, all we have to talk about seems to be who we should sign and who we should sell. It’s strange territory for Arsenal fans to not still be looking forward to major games at this stage of the season. This must be what it’s been like to be a Spurs fan for the last 16 years. Ah well, at least we’ve won the league in colour.

  • 304. *_Respect Highbury  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 11:21 am

I watched a re-run of the PSV-Ajax game and I really really cannot believe that Arsene Wenger was incapable of rolling over that team. PSV AT HOME got steamrolled by Ajax. I remember some Arse fans making that Gomez sound like Lev flipping Yashin at the time! Lev Yashin he ain’t!! Go on YouTube and watch Huntelaar’s goals and then tell me we couldn’t do with such a player (I watched the whole game as well on Five)

J Marsh” International football is uselss and futile exercise.
I hope England do not quality for Euroe 2008. So for all their postulating the FA will look like mugs, AGAIN!

Anyway J Marsh: Dunno much about Bill Hicks but, I do know this - Harry Hill is an unfunny git!

Sucks to have no season to fawn over eh? Ah well….

  • 305. madhu_bangalore  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 11:26 am

RH - I would love Rijkaard to take over, but have a funny feeling that it would be Tony Adams. I guess he was talking of moving out of portsmouth couple of months back. May serve as assistant to Wenger for couple of years and the take over.

  • 306. J Marsh  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 11:32 am

I hate seeing teams that have got one over on Arsenal play like shit soon afterwards. Seems to happen a lot, like Bolton after they beat us a little while back getting thumped 4-0 at home. I remember watching it thinking, I’m SURE they were better than this.
Huntelaar sounds good but I haven’t seen him play. He does give me the impression of a Wenger type player from what I’ve heard though, young, bags of talent, fast etc etc.
Quick one for you, this has been driving me mad for the last few days. Does anyone remember a Greek (?) bloke we had on loan (I think) who missed a penalty for us in one of his only games? Don’t ask me why but I’m really bored and it’s been driving me crazy. Did my confused little mind just completely make this up or did it happen? It’s been in the last 10 years, if indeed it did happen. Can anyone out there help me?
The most I’ve enjoyed any moment from international football recently has been Nevilles back pass to Robinson in Croatia…made my day.

  • 307. J Marsh  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 11:35 am

I never thought I’d say it but I don’t see Adams coming back any time soon. The mans an Arsenal legend (Obviously) but he seems to have made every effort to distance himself from Arsenal over the last few years and has had one or two comments about us which have annoyed me.
Rijkaard would be fine by me, if we could afford him I’d like to see Hiddink given a chance as well. What are the odds of us paying the kinda money either would want though? Can you imagine the stick Hiddink would get after his tax evasion thing from the press and opposition fans as well?

  • 308. Blog Head  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 11:36 am

    Still dont work though

  • 310. J Marsh  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 11:42 am

You’ve actually got a point there Bloggie.
We have a bad season (By recent standards) decimated by injuries in which we still will probably finish third and our youngsters have reach a cup final and we bitch and moan and have people suggest we sell our best striker and get rid of the manager.
You have a decade (I’m being VERY kind with that estimate) of nothingness and all it takes to have you on top of the world is a decent cup run.
Success spoils fans, it really does.

  • 311. Blog Head  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 12:09 pm

The thing is though James is that no matter how much you lot moan and would say you’ve had enough with the club, your hardcore following would still sell out Highbury every week no matter how bad it got.

Could the same be said for chelsea? Well we know the answer to that is no with a capital N

  • 312. tubes  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 12:25 pm

thats probably what we need - 2 more shitty (by our standards) seasons and that will flush out all the glory hunters which means ashburton grove would become intimidating as there’ll only be the hardcore fans left.

  • 313. Ruralgoon  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 12:29 pm

good point well put, Bloggie! And the fact is there seems to have been people posting on here that are on the verge of saying ” well if Arsenal cant win anything,I’m gonna go support someone else” that is NOT what supporting a team is about…even if you decided to support a team because at the time they were the most successful, when they start to fade you should stick with them, not jump ship!

  • 314. J Marsh  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 12:30 pm

If two seasons would do it I might actually be tempted to make that deal Tubes. There’s potential there for ‘The Grove’ to become a really intimidating place for teams to visit. Our record there is pretty good at present in the sense we’ve never lost but can you imagine the record if there’d been great atmospheres for those games where we just haven’t got going and have dropped silly points? The problem is that all the corporate boxes etc that drain the place of atmosphere are going nowhere, the prawn sandwich brigade are there to stay I fear.

  • 315. Ruralgoon  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Not being funny, but if we had players with names that were easier to rhyme with things, we’d have more songs to sing, and therefore make more noise…. how the hell can you make up a catchy song for aliadiere, baptista, adebayor, even robin van persie doesnt trip off the tongue… and as for hleb… dont even go there!

  • 324. J Marsh  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 12:52 pm

A friend of mine has a friend who shagged Peter Crouch. She claimed that she didn’t know who he was and it had nothing to do with him being a footballer. I was like “That’s right, she probably thought that with those looks he had to be a male model and felt a deep spiritual bond with him”

  • 325. Blog Head  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 12:56 pm

GOOD TO BE Lol…I got booted out of the ROH in Covent Garden last night. I supposed I had a strong scent of booze and, when 2 guys on stage were grappling, I kept giggling, telling my Missus how it reminded me of Fabregas jacking Fat Frank’s lunch money in the Carling Cup final, lol….
Arsenal v Juve sounds good to me actually. Or Real v Arsenal.

J MARSH: I have no idea who the Greek is…I remember some geezer called Danilevicus but he was Ukrainian or sthg…then there was Tavlaridis, now at Lille…anyhow.
The reason I say Huntelaar is because we won’t afford Eto’o.
Huntelaar is a typical Arsene player, with more link-up play than Ruud, quicker, and deceptively skillful. H is bloody lethal in and around the box, and he loses markers inside the penalty area easily….

BLOGGIE: Vitamin C? Why not….that hair of the dog business is bollocks, never worked for me..I should go to Boots! And good point Bloggie. Through these times you see who the real support are. Something the Chavs will never have!

J MARSH: I love it when certain “slappers” shag a footballer, only to claim they ‘didn’t know’ who he was. Reminds me of a story of this girl in Denmark who shagged Ronaldo 2 years ago. He was in Denmark for a U2 concert, sitting at a VIP table, with people staring and pointing at him. He had the most expensive bottles of champagne…some corpulent buck-toothed nobody…yet, this stunning broad goes off home with him…Hhhhhhm…..
As for that bird that your Missus knows who shagged Peter Crouch: how did it work when he had his legs in the air? Did they scrape the ceiling? Lol….lol…..Aaaaaaaaaaagh feel shocking…I should know better…..

20 TIPS ON HOW TO WIN AN MBE.

    Author: MR STEVEN GEORGE GERRARD.
    CITY OF LIVERPOOL

    1) When you are overlooked by the Queen and Buckingham Palace for an MBE, shamelessly whinge until you get your way.
    2) Get to the Champions League final as captain of your beloved city, but overshadow all the proceeding by dithering over your future.
    3) Try and get the world to understand just how difficult the choices are between electing to remain in your city of birth on ££100,000 per week, or moving down to London and staying on £130,000k instead.
    4) Get to the Champs League final and get outmanoeuvred for 45 minutes by Kaka
    5) Wait for Daddy Hammann to get on the field of play in order to sort you out and liberate your play
    6) After playing alright for 40 minutes in the second half of the final, go and Champion yourself to the British press as the “best player in Europe”
    7) When interviewed straight after the Champs League final, remind the watching world that this is the club you grew up with, and that you “could never leave after a moment like this”
    8) The day after saying this on global tv, retract the statement and claim that you have “no idea” where you will be playing next season
    9) The day after saying that, submit an official transfer request
    10) 2 days after that, retract your transfer request
    11) A day after that, re-submit it….ah wait…hang on…take some diazepam as you are so low…think about the tough life choice you have to make…£130k a week in London, or £100k per week in cheaper Liverpool….
    12) Announce to the press that you are the world’s most loyal footballer, and that you are staying for the ‘fans, the passion and my beloved club’. Conveniently forgetting to add that you fucked your ‘beloved club’ around for weeks on end, leaving them on tenterhooks. Oh, and that the £100k per week after tax also helped convince you…
    13) Never do a thing of note at international level for your country, bar one goal in a World Cup qualifier
    14) Go to the World Cup in 2006 giving it mucho verbal. Tell the word how ‘you can win it’, and that you have ‘world-class players’. Proceed to perform like Royal Dross, scoring one goal against a debutant nation, and a decent header in a meaningless qualifying group match.
    15) When it REALLY matters in the crunch games, go missing. Hide.
    16) When subsequently questioned over your scandalous ‘performance’, proceed to blame a 17 year-old boy who has never played international football in his life, and who barely kicked a ball at professional level.
    17) As if that weren’t enough, write a shit book, telling the whole world how rubbish you were and let your country down in the World Cup. Oh and how it was all that little 17 year-old kid’s fault
    18) Never win a European Footballer of the Year, World Player of the Year or PFA Footballer of the Year bar the one-off.
    19) Make sure you have never won a league title in your history.
    20) Never provide anything of noteworthy praise towards humanity. You know…do not set up a charity in your name for underprivileged children, do not contribute towards AIDS programmes…show no interest in giving back to the game that got you where you are. After all not only do you have your ridiculous ego to look after, you also have a greedy WAG who needs a daily dosage of Prada

Maclaren: “Frank and Steven can play in midfield together”
    Classic.

talking of midfielders not being able to play together does anyone think Diaby’s presence caused cesc to have a quiet game at Everton? is that why wenger has rarely played them in central midfield together?
If thats the case, then I am beginning to think maybe the central pair should be Diaby and Gilberto ie the same as Vieira and Gilberto, the pair that were invincible. Cesc potentially could be a better right handed midfielder than Hleb. I know its a waste of Cesc, but I have seen him have a couple of good games from the right, not a long term solution though.

Liverpool had this same problem when they had Alonso (cesc), Hamman (gilberto) and Sissoko (Diaby). they sold Hamman. its not really proven to be the right move. I think they miss Hamman’s work.
its tricky, but 3 into 2 doesn’t go.

    Unless you play 4-5-1

  • 333. J Marsh  |  March 23rd, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Thanks for that Respects. I’ve come to the conclusion that it never happened and that I’ve obviously got problems seperating reality from things that I imagined…which is concerning.
Talking of Tavlaridas, I remember him playing against Utd in the last few years in the CL and Alan Green on the radio getting more and more angry at him for fouling the Utd players and getting away with it. Think I was more pleased with him then than during his entire time at Arsenal!
Best cure for a hangover is the warm fuzzy embrace of painkillers and a dark cool room. Unconsciousness is an attractive option if you can safely ensure it. Reminds me of that Johnny Cash song “I woke up Sunday morning, with no way to hold my head that didn’t hurt”

    My future team:

    Gordon

    Eboue, Toure, Djourou, Clichy

    Denilson, Fabregas, Diaby, Merida

    RVP, Adebayor

Bench: Mannone, Senderos, Hoyte, Song, Bendtner

In this team when we have the ball we play a 4-4-2 but when we lose the ball RVP drops to the right wing to play a 4-5-1, moving Denilson into the centre along with Fabregas and Diaby. Now this would be class……

Arsene spoke to the press about the return of Nicklas Bendtner next season to compete with our forwards. Is this an indication that Julio Baptista will not be wearing an Arsenal shirt next season? 6 Strikers competing for two places isn’t really going to work so 1 maybe 2 players will go. We know that other player is Jeremie Aliadiere. Its a shame because when he is involved in the game he looks quite bright. Works hard, makes runs and takes on defenders (Bolton away springs to mind in the FA cup) unfortunately his confidence appears to be low right now and looks nervous infront of goal. I still think there is a good player in him.

Next up is another trip to Anfield, we have had a nice little time up there lately but this is at another stage of the season to the earlier results against them and will mean virtually nothing.

Before that we have a whole load of these crap International matches. Alot of people enjoy them but they bore me silly, extremely boring. They make me want to beat someone with a wooden spoon. So no doubt we will get a lovely extension to our already overcrowded injury list. If we are lucky enough to have our players back from their pointless duties without strains, knocks etc then I would like to see us go to Anfield and play 4-5-1. Adebayor would return as the lone front man with a midfield of Rosicky, Cesc, Gilberto, Diaby and Hleb with hopefully Eboue and Clichy returning to fullbacks. Gilberto would hold and this would allow Cesc and Diaby the freedom to push forward and support Adebayor.

I think Diaby has goals in him. I personally don’t see how he can line up alongside Cesc in the middle of a 4-4-2. His natural game is to attack and drive forward. Its a bit like the way that Cesc and Vieira didn’t really work, and Vieira was more defensive than his clone. The two young major talents need to be alongside Gilberto, Makelele, Marquez. That’s why I think the 5 in midfield could really benefit the current fit squad members.

I hope Wenger doesn’t keep up the Gilberto at centre back idea that has popped into his head in recent weeks. Berty boy scared the hell out of me against PSV and although he was better against Everton he was sorely missed in midfield in both matches. Diaby or Cesc are not going to fill in at right back when Eboue gets caught too far forward and make last ditch tackles.

I hold my hands up it has taken me a while to totally appreciate what Gilberto does in his role. Its easy to notice that he can look poor on the ball (although that seems to have improved alot this season) but what he does off the ball is very important to Arsenal, he has been one of the plus points this term.

I hate comparing us to Manchester United but when I watched them against Bolton I looked hard for the differences between our style and their style. And what I noticed is that Manchester United play to go forward. Everything is done with the intention of having a goalscoring opportunity.

When I watched the game at Goodison I saw us play with the intention of passing. Side to side, into gaps, Cesc playing low curling cross field passes to the right. Nothing very direct, nothing urgent enough. That has been the case for most of the season. Pires, Bergkamp, Wright, Anelka, Overmars were aggressive in the final third. Ronaldo and Rooney are aggressive around the box. Hleb, Cesc and Adebayor are not.

It seems like young French wonderkid Gilles Sunu is set to put pen to paper on a four year deal. I have looked high and low for a clip of him but its no use. Maybe something will creep out once he puts pen to paper. Apparently he is being named as Henry the 2nd, lets home its the good side of Mr Henry.
The guy is only 16 so along with Merida and Lansbury we may have to wait until next seasons Carling cup to see them in first team action.

Did you all see the shit at the end of the Tottenham Chelsea match? Only a Spurs fan can miss someone who isn’t looking the right way from a few inches away! Well what would you expect.

Why Arsenal are loosing their matches, is it beacause of Lack of good finisher or what?

Pls Arsene Wenger try and buy good players for us because players like Baptista are notting but an empty bust. Thanks
