Fabrice Muamba might play for England, and it’s a fantastic story.

0 guns July 29th, 2006

The second Congo war of 1998-2003 was one of the worst interstate wars in modern African history, implicating more than nine African nations and earning it the nickname of “Africa’s World War“. In 1999, Fabrice and his family fled the Republic of Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, to become Asylum Seekers in Walthamstow, London.

Fabrice was just eleven years old. However, five years later he was a star of school football and signing youth terms with Arsenal. In between then and making his full first-team debut in 2005 against Sunderland, he has become a naturalized British citizen and represented England at youth level. Now his remarkable journey has taken him to Birmingham, where he will play for a season on loan. One need only read Steve Bruce’s excited comments to understand Muamba’s potential. A central midfielder in the Patrick Vieira mould, a successful spell at Birmingham could see him in contention for the Arsenal first team.

For some reason, I don’t feel the same is true of Sebastian Larsson, who is also set to spend the season with Brum. Although undoubtedly a player of versatility and class, he is yet to find a niche in the squad. Perhaps a year of first-team football will allow him to find his natural position, though unfortunately I feel he may end up suffering the same fate as Ryan Smith, who has been sold to Derby for an undisclosed fee. Injuries and ill-fortune conspired against the winger, and he never truly recovered the blistering form he showed as a sixteen-year-old. However, this is yet another contribution to the football league by the Arsenal academy, a feature of the club I’ll soon be writing a full article on. The Rams aren’t finished at Arsenal, with suggestions they could still be after Arturo Lupoli.

So that’s three players out, and David Dein has admitted what we all knew: they’ll soon be joined by a fourth, with talks between Arsenal and Chelsea taking place on the transfer of Ashley Cole. As I’ve said before: the sooner it’s done the better.

Whilst we await any arrivals with great anticipation, the transfer market is starting to click into gear as far as Manchester United are concerned, with Ruud van Nistelrooy leaving and Michael Carrick set to join. There’s been a bit of murmuring amongst Arsenal fans that we should’ve nabbed Carrick for around £3m back in 2004.

There are two things to consider in this argument: firstly, that the signing of Carrick was only being considered at that point because it looked sure that Patrick Vieira would leave; and secondly that the signing of Carrick would have halted the progress of one Cesc Fabregas.

As it turned out, the deal didn’t happen, and now he’s apparently worth £18m to Man U. But Cesc is worth far more to us, Real Madrid, and just about anyone else in world football. Carrick is a more than decent footballer, but Cesc is special. Looking back, you have to say this is another decision that Arsene got spot on.

Hopefully his refusal to pay £10m for Curtis Davies will prove to be another wise move: the defender has now pledged his future to West Brom. Well, at least he’s not going to Spurs.

Finally (sorry for the long-winded nature of this article), barring a second-leg miracle we will face Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League qualifiers. A signing or two wouldn’t hurt us get past them (hint hint, Arsene…).

you’re spot on in some ways gunnerblog—please write and article about how all the English Arsenal rejects are flourishing at other clubs—though not world class they are stocking the premiership with talent–I could name names—too late in the states–plus I’m an ignorant yank.(see Charlton, Reading, Birmingham etc…)

The transfer mkt is for idiots. ruud van nistleshyte’s price was out to lunch, compared to shevnuts and rooney. curtis davies (btw I’m sure he’s an alright fella but his agent has driven his price up) will go for half of what they want. However, b/c Chelsea is involved… we should bend Chelsea the fuck over for Assley Cole, that thick jackass. finance a whole new team for that stupid piece of rotting, stupid gay turd. Queer.

  • 3. Arse  |  July 29th, 2006 at 8:09 am

I think regarding the players we loan out wenger is still waiting for that one real special player that doesnt just have a good or decent season on loan but stands out head & shoulders above their team-mates. I think the general opinion is that muamba & maybe Gilbert could just be those people. I know hoyte started brightly for sunderland but his form dropped badly & he was left out the team, bentley never done anything for norwich apart from getting in trouble, pennant had a decent season at leeds but nothing spectacular & so on. Wenger has said on many occasions he is not looking for a special player but a super special player as they are the only ones good enough for arsenal. That argument does fall down somewhat when you consider that cygan, song & flamini get to play so many games, but at least he has the right idea.

  • 4. Little Dutch  |  July 29th, 2006 at 8:25 am

Song gets to play so many games? Three in the Prem (none of which he played badly in). Hardly a threat to O’Leary’s appearance record is it?

  • 5. gazzap  |  July 29th, 2006 at 9:41 am

no but song looks awful whereas Muamba has looked class every time I have seen him play. Song may improve….but he may not… £2.5m as well. these are the sorts of average players that are stopping English talent coming through. no one begrudges the top foreigners playing but when cygan, flamini, and song seem to have more opportunity than the english boys, something is not right.
As back up to the first teamers, Upson, Sidwell and Muamba would be just as good for Arsenal as the 3 I mentoned above and they are English.
Will aliadiere restrict Walcott’s first team opportunities this season? I really hope not.

  • 6. Hboy  |  July 29th, 2006 at 9:45 am

This anti-Song trend amongst fans is a real bore. It became a fashion, and the sheep blurt it out continuously. Song is a kid, who has only played a handful of games in his entire professional career, that he doesn’t look like Vieira, he’s castigated for. I thought he was poor in the Portsmouth away game, but bounced back and played impressively against Sunderland away. As more and more young players come through, in world football, it seems the pressure on young players intensifies. If they’re not Pele by 16, they’re not going to make it. Give Song a chance, he might be a world-beater, he might not, what I would say, is that he has admirable physical qualities for someone so young, and Arsene was obviously impressed enough to have made the decision to sign him. I for one was pleased we did sign him.

I saw Muamba for the reserves last year and he looked outstanding as a centre back, I was surprised he wasn’t kept for the first team this year, but I’m sure he’ll be back. I was equally disappointed to see Gilbert go out on loan, but again, I think he is definetely for keeps. Larsson has absolutely no future, what he’s done to buy a respect that Song hasn’t from the Arsenal fans, I’m at a loss to say. He has none of the physical attributes required to make it in a top league.

  • 7. Charlie  |  July 29th, 2006 at 10:20 am

What the hell has Flamini done to earn the castigation of so called fans? He must be really poor to play out of position and contribute to a record breaking euro defensive performance eh? Johnny come lately fans who know bugger all about seeing a decent player need to get off some backs. I remember Gus Caesar. Now he was shit.

  • 8. philip  |  July 29th, 2006 at 10:29 am

Well Wenger had a player he sent out on loan, was outstanding there, and he came back to Arsenal to become part of the first team. Unfortunately what the loan did not help him with was his intelligence.

Ashley Cole came back from Crystal Palace to replace Silvinho

  • 9. Hboy  |  July 29th, 2006 at 10:34 am

Agreed on Flamini. Personally, I don’t think he’s going to make it in midfield, again, just doesn’t have the physical characteristics to make up for his lack of footballing ability, but, as a left-back, he was a sensation, the closest thing we’ve had to a Nigel Winterburn … since Nigel Winterburn. His tackles lifted the whole morale of the team, throughout the champions league. I think Wenger has a little bit of a problem, as in he needs to convince Flamini that this is his best position, rather than midfield. I’d be surprised if Wenger didn’t know that already. But left-back or not, an excellent squad man to have, and maybe, he can surprise us all in midfield, in the same way he did at full back, but he’s got some convincing to do for me.

  • 10. Dave  |  July 29th, 2006 at 11:00 am

Got to admit Flamini was very impressive as left-back after he settled into the role.

  • 11. Miff  |  July 29th, 2006 at 11:04 am

Rigobert is useless. he played good against sunderland… ..WOW… the team who finished bottom of the league with the record for lowest amount of points ever in the prem!!!

  • 12. Little Dutch  |  July 29th, 2006 at 11:35 am

The difference is gazzap, none of the English lads you mention were willing to stay and fight for a place. I’ve been at all of the games Song has played for the first team and his positional play is excellent for one so young (something cameras often can’t pick up). The thing with Song is, he is being moulded into that unspectacular, but indispensible, Gilberto role, so he’s not going to look spectacular. A young marauding Vieira type on the other hand is likely to be noticed much more easily. I think he looks a bit cumbersome in possession, but he’s only just 18 and I think he deserves more of a chance than three games (one as sub).

  • 13. Little Dutch  |  July 29th, 2006 at 11:37 am

Oh and btw, I agree Muamba looks class, but I think a loan spell will be good for a player of his attributes. To play in a more physical league can only improve him and I’m sure he’ll find his way into the first team squad next season.

  • 14. Kolo  |  July 29th, 2006 at 12:42 pm

the ashley cole saga perplexs me. at the end of last season wen preparing for the world cup he sed he expected to b an arsenal player next season, yet papers report he sed his goodbyes to a lot of people and never planned to return. i dont see y an arsenal fan which he is himself wud say this if it was not partially true, as it gives his fellow supporters false hope. think back to him and thierry sitting in the centre circle for hours as we sed goodbye to highbury, and giving that young lad his boots. to me he didnt look like someone hell bent on leaving. i mean remember his goal against kiev, he is a gooner at heart. for years we were told vieira was goin to leave but he never did, till we didnt really expect it. i dont think everything is as black and white as the papers say, and considering wat chelsea have paid for drogba, swp and essien (all around 25 mil) we shud def hold out for 30 mil were we to sell him. he may have met with chelsea, but whose to say he actually new they were goin to be there, he may have been tricked. (another theory of mine is he went to try and get chelsea into trouble for tapping him wen he had no intention of going there maybe a points deduction all be that i no is very far fetched). but i for one wud still love to see him stay. and should he go i hope that he will be able to return as all the arsenal legends did last weekend for dennis in future testimonials etc

  • 15. Little Dutch  |  July 29th, 2006 at 1:04 pm

Cole didn’t say he was leaving because a) he is a proven liar, why should that comment surprise you and b) if he admits he is leaving he is not elligible under F.A rules for a signing on fee when he leaves. He is also a proven money grabber. So when you have a) a liar and b) a money grabber, it all makes perfect sense really. Usually I don’t indulge in bating other players, but on December 2 I am going to boo myself hoarse.

  • 16. Alan  |  July 29th, 2006 at 2:14 pm

Cole is a cunt period. But why would he want to stay at Arsenal anyway? Whatever way you look at it, Chelsea is the place to be. Not just for money, but for honours. Why stay at a team like Arsenal that have gone from an unbeaten team to a team barely capable of finishing 4th. Let alone champions. This Arsenal side gets weaker every season it seems. We lose experienced players and bring in potential without replacing them. Lame. And let us ask one question. If it was Arsenal who had just won back-to-back titles, would Cole still want to leave then? I don’t think so. As much as Cole is a cunt, blame Arsenal for lowering their ambitions. Seems like we are Juventus. Losing all our best players without ever replacing them. Got to laugh though. I’m for one looking forward to all the excuses and another shit season and see what crap comes out of Arsenal then. Got my own life to sort out anyway. Why should I care about a shit bunch of over-payed fucks who never know the meaning of life and never done a proper days work in their life. Thanks Arsene for the memories and all you’ve done for us. Now it’s back to the George Graham era. Where the only thing we can realistically hope for is a cup run. We’ve had our one season wonders where we win the league. Never back-to-back titles. The start of the Decline of Arsenal Football Club.

  • 17. Little Dutch  |  July 29th, 2006 at 2:39 pm

I suggest you take your own advice and fuck off Alan. Nobody here seems to enjoy hearing from you, you don’t seem to enjoy posting, you have to ask yourself why should such a joyless mofo as yourself bother coming here. I suggest you’re just looking to piss people off, in which case I feel sorry for you.

  • 18. Si from the North Bank  |  July 29th, 2006 at 2:54 pm

Alan, stfu, what are you, a spurs fan?

You’re right about Ashley, but screw it… we’ve had 5 good years for free, and now we’ll get 20m for him… I could care less with Clichy right behind him, and players like Flamini ready to take the slack if needed. The club is bigger than any one player, it has to be, or we’re all one bad tackle from being screwed.

But Alan, you are so far off beam about the club. just go and winge down at shite hart, why dont ya? I remember when we came 10th under Don Howe. We’ve won more under Wenger than in the 20 years before him, and coming behind a club floating on 200m pounds worth of russian blood money is no shame… thats IF they can keep their stars happy warming the bench. If they can’t, they’re catchble, by us, Manure or the Pool.

  • 19. robinvp  |  July 29th, 2006 at 3:00 pm

alan no thanks for your crap NOW PISS OFF!!! YOU PLASTIC MUPPET.

  • 20. Kolo  |  July 29th, 2006 at 3:23 pm

alan mate the cole problems started before chelsea had even won the title, as he met them half way thro there first title season so he must have only be goin there for money not necessarily cos we cant win nuthin anymore. ‘Iâ??m for one looking forward to all the excuses and another shit season and see what crap comes out of Arsenal then’ plus can u please explain this quote, cos if last season was crap u clearly werent in the bernabeau, the stadio de la alpi, and the stade to france. they were some of the best nights of my life and we showed wat we are all about. battling against the odds without a chance, but gaining the respect of the world. and anyway wen all is sed and done i wud rather never win another title than sell out in the way chelsea have done, but i no in my heart that wen there russian empire falls we will be the ones who come out on top and once again hit the summit of english football.

  • 21. Alan  |  July 29th, 2006 at 3:34 pm

Guess it proves how sad and hopeful some Arsenal fans are. “When the Russian empire falls.” Erm. What makes any of you think Abramovich will just fuck off? Why would he “get bored?” It is all wishful thinking. Even if he does eventually, it could be in 20 years time. And secondly, what makes you think if Chelsea do fall, Arsenal will be the team to overcome them? All bullshit. It is what is known as a “fantasy.” You say shit like this to make yourselves feel better knowing times are shit. Aren’t Liverpool, United and Spurs building currently for the future? Liverpool are building for both the present and future and also who is to say they don’t have some yougsters to come through? Some people really are living in a little “optimistic” dream world. You all think and hope the youngster of Arsenal will mature and become great, but that is not a certainty. So you risk the present in order of a “better future” that may not even materialise. And with a club in debt, that is playing a HUGE risk.

  • 22. Anti  |  July 29th, 2006 at 3:41 pm

Simple question: if Cole were about the money as some commenters claim, why say 60k or nothing to Dein?

That is the key point, he asked for 60k and Dein/Wenger/Board refused.
60k is not the wage demand of a Shylock

You can argue the rest if you want to but that will remain the launchpad of all this drama
Over the lives of his two contracts he would have averaged 44k or thereabouts and that seems perfectly reasonable given his effort for the Club.

  • 23. fuckoffALan  |  July 29th, 2006 at 4:12 pm

well lets just ignore alan. what arsene and his board has did i completely agree. so what if arsenal don win any title or championship. football is no longer just abt winning it abt sustaining and gaining profit. in another words is already a business. a new stadium with plenty of potential young players is a good foundation. with the sale of cole would be additional profit. we do not need to buy spent on establish players aas their service are usually limited. money does not means success. look at leeds and real madrid. is better to maintain it and moving forward. in a fews years time, our revenue would be much better. with a bigger stadium, our future look bright. is useless to keep moaning abt getting more players. a good deal is so important. just look at the progress of arsenal from the past 10 yrs. we are movivng to the likes of man u and liverpool.

  • 24. Hipe  |  July 29th, 2006 at 4:18 pm

Back to Flamini and Song and Wengers choices. Fo the past few years he has hinted that he’s looking for players that can make an impact in the new stadium. Flamini is the best conditioned player he has and Song is good holding midfilelder. Our youth, pace and large pitch will make th difference against the brusers. Last year we finisihed as the best passers in the league and have added another good one in Rosicky. Diaby is more mobile that Vieria, Song more than Gilberto. With Febregas’s vision and the speed we have upfront, wait and see…

  • 25. Anti  |  July 29th, 2006 at 4:29 pm

    Hipe, or Hype?
Because this vision you speak of has become mythical. He had 5 assists last season, I think.
Drogba had double that and Vieira had a better season the year before.

Fabregas stands out because he is playing alongside Gilberto but he doesn’t open defences as much as you’d like to think. Even henry’s assists were down by a huge amount which suggests, SUGGESTS, that he was not receivign the ball from Fabregas in dangerous positions.

The reason why Vieira’s assists were overlooked is because he usually gave Henry the ball in that left channel for many of Henry’s assists. Fabregas just dithers because he believes he should make the “pass before the goal”
Inevitably the play broke down against stronger opposition.
Arsenal actually plays a much slower tempo with Fabregas in the team. A shocking departure that no one else seems to realise.

whats gonna happen to chelsea in 4 years time when fifa rules require 8 home grown talent players present in the squad

  • 27. Alan  |  July 29th, 2006 at 7:30 pm

Won’t be Chelsea with the problem. It will be Arsenal. Chelsea will have Cole, Terry, Lampard, J Cole, Wright-Phillips maybe to name current few.

  • 28. IL-Gooner  |  July 29th, 2006 at 8:12 pm

‘these are the sorts of average players that are stopping English talent coming through. no one begrudges the top foreigners playing but when cygan, flamini, and song seem to have more opportunity than the english boys, something is not right.
As back up to the first teamers, Upson, Sidwell and Muamba would be just as good for Arsenal as the 3 I mentoned above and they are English.’
As already mentioned, these young English players want to play, not to seat on the bench, and who could blame them?

Charlie - who was worse, Gus Ceasar or Nelson Vivas?

Flamini reminds me of a bit of Ray Parlour. Ray was not as good as Flam when he was his age, and he turned out to be a very good squad player.

Anti - I think you’re very wrong about Fab. Sometimes he slows the play, sometimes he hastens it - he really controls the tempo of the game. He’s a real playmaker, and he can pass the ball in very tight situations. Often he gets Arsenal out of trouble by releasing the opposition’s pressure. You shouldn’t compare him to Vieira - he’s a very very different player, but he has at least the same class. He doesn’t have Vieira’s natural physical ability and stature, but his passing is better and he’s more attack-minded. If he improves his shooting and strengthens physically, he will probably become a football legend.

  • 29. IL-Gooner  |  July 29th, 2006 at 8:13 pm

Alan - home grown players don’t mean English players.

  • 30. arsenals bombay chapter  |  July 29th, 2006 at 9:31 pm

what a midfield fabregas and vieira would make. it would allow patrick to play the defensive role, with the occasional foray. while cesc would make that killer pass, like the one that put torres through on goal in spains WC round of 16 game (i think)

  • 31. lasagnechef  |  July 29th, 2006 at 11:59 pm

NIce piece GS. Hope to see him come good in the red and white for years to come. Looing forward to the reserves acadamy piece now…

  • 32. Arsehole  |  July 30th, 2006 at 1:32 am

Hey , can you people choosy arse stop picking on Song? Song is not like Febragas who has talent. Song may not have talent but he is definitely hardworking and plus point is that Song is physically well built and possess height. All Song needs is 2 years of polishing his passing skill and tackling skill to become a woldclass hard takling midfielder. Dont forget he is 18years old. 18 years old 18 years old. in two years time he will be around 20 or 21 years old.

So stop your judgement on Song. The only person i dont like is Ashley. My question is why attack his own club who brought him to what he was; fame, world class left side defender, an a fabolous wife? when he secretly meet chelski at a hotel 2 years ago. Ashley is not typically a footballer model.. Lacks grace, compassion and forgiveness.. I swear I will never buy his junk book.Nor care about his stupid story about feeding himself to shark. He is pretty childish and ridiculious esp when he got his contract bumberfrom Arsenal to around 70k plus i beleive. Can some one chant at Emirate Stadium “Cashley lacks grace, forgiveness and compassion”.

  • 34. gazzap  |  July 30th, 2006 at 8:29 am

I think people misunderstood my earlier post about song and flamini. I am happy that we have those players. Flamini provides really good cover for several positions and is hard working and not injury prone. Song, did have some shockers last season but the reason he is with us is because of the future. He does need 2 years to improve. can he do that in the reserves or does he need to play 1st team football? can wenger risk losing games like Portsmouth away last year just to give him experience?
Lets see how Song looks in a year or 2 before we go overboard on him.

Cygan though, just does not have the pace for the premiership. and I think upson did want to stay and fight. thats all bullshit that upson wanted out. wenger did not want him and told him so, so he looked for a move.
Other than upson, I cant think of many players that I wished we’d kept. and before people say PV. Vieira is a different story as he had 9 good years with us.

  • 35. AllAlansAreRetards  |  July 30th, 2006 at 12:37 pm

Alan’s a n idiot, let’s leave it at that. On the subject of Flamini, he is my third favourite player at Arsenal behind Henry and Fabregas, he’s a player that just WANTS to play for Arsenal, in any position, and will give his all. Let’s all just wave goodbye to Ashley (the idiot) Cole, who for some reason thinks we’re not loyal to him, and claims he has been loyal to us. Where the hell does he get this opinion, We didn’t meet Chelsea in secret, WE didn’t try and orchestrate a move, but it’s us who is unloyal, I think he should join his namesake Cole at Chelsea, they’re both as smart as each other, but you know what, between them they may add up to one braincell. Oh, funnily enough I think that’s something the fans have in common with the team Chelsea, their all bloody retards with inflated ego’s cos a Russian has taken pity on them. Btw Alan, you weren’t as lucky as most Chelsea fans, you dont even have a braincell to rub together you frerakin morose, know nothing about football, cu*t.

  • 36. claire selby  |  August 8th, 2006 at 1:58 pm

Leave Flamini alone!!! the very first time i saw him play knew he’d b outstanding for the team.Did one of the finest sliding tackles seen since the dixon/winterburn era, and he was playing midfield at the time! On the subject of mr cole, fear he could b making one HUGE mistake in career terms. I think he could find himself another benchwarmer: chelski dont really want him, they just dont want anyone else to have him.[same as swp and their 40,000 midfielders] why buy him and carlos and still keep bridge? that’s my conspiracy theory & i’m sticking to it
