Arsenal Transfer Overview

330 guns July 26th, 2010

This summer has been strangely familiar. The season ended with a diminuendo, as the squad struggled under the strain of both injuries and expectation. Arsene was clear about the need for reinforcements:

“Going forward we have done very well but defensively we have been average. When you concede 40 goals you don’t win the title. I want to rectify that.

My transfer policy this summer will be to keep our strengths going forward, add one player, and add more defensive strength to our team.”

And business started well. Marouane Chamakh arrived on a Bosman, and protracted negotiations for Laurent Koscielny ended with the centre-half jetting in on the 7th July.

That was nearly three weeks ago now, and despite Arsene’s return from the World Cup and reunion with his blackberry, there hasn’t been a signing since.

This is no problem in attack, where we’re well stocked. Chamakh’s arrival offsets Eduardo’s departure - in fact, I’d suggest it strengthens us. In Eduardo we had a player still going through a process of rehabilitation. Chamakh is a player arriving at the peak of his career who will relish the opportunity of a move to his preferred league and club. He, Bendtner and Van Persie gives us plenty of depth in the middle, though all three could also put in a shift out wide. On the flanks, Arshavin, Nasri, Walcott, and Eboue provide variety, whilst the sale of Eduardo gives Carlos Vela another (possibly final) chance to make an impact.

Attacking midfield is another area where we’re strong. Most of the players listed above also fall in to that category, along with several others who prefer to penetrate from deep - Abou Diaby, Tomas Rosicky, the currently injured Aaron Ramsey. There was certainly interest in Joe Cole - Arsene can’t resist a bargain - but the deal fell down over the prospective length of Cole’s contract. Liverpool offered him a four year deal, twice what Arsenal were prepared to commit, and Cole headed North.

Cole’s decision opens the door for several young players: Henri Lansbury, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, and, most likely, Jack Wilshere. Tomas Rosicky made 33 appearances last season - this year, I expect him to share that tally with Wilshere. By the end of the campaign, Jack will hope to have leapfrogged the Czech in the queue for first-team places.

Of course, the biggest boost in this part of the pitch is the news that Cesc Fabregas is all but certain to stay. Fabregas will once again be the fulcrum for the side - goalscorer, captain, and creator in chief.

Defensive midfield will be marshalled by Alex Song, with Denilson ready to fill in when Song is absent. I’ve never been convinced by Denilson’s aptitude for a principally defensive role - he lacks the combative nature and positional awareness. Denilson is a pass-and-move player; a disrupter and distributor. I’d prefer Arsene to sign a tougher, more tactically astute model to provide Song with not only back-up but some serious competition. It’s not all about size - at the World Cup the 5′8″ Anthony Annan excelled at the base of Ghana’s midfield. It’s about being committed to becoming a specialist in the role. I’m not sure Denilson fits that bill.

All that said, I don’t see Arsene buying a holding midfielder. Denilson is a pet project of his - in 2007 he declared he would oversee the development of Cesc, Diaby and Denilson in to world class midfielders, and he won’t give up on that ambition, however much the evidence stacks up against the latter pair. Hopefully a youngster like Emmanuel Frimpong can develop in to a genuine rival for the Brazilian’s place in the squad.

You’ll realise I’ve approached the squad from the front - I saw it as getting the easy positions out of the way first. But I can’t avoid confronting the major problems any longer: we’ve arrived at the defence.

A glance at this section on the Arsenal.com squad page makes the problems all too clear:

Granted, you can throw in Emmanuel Eboue as an option at right back, but the cupboard still looks bare. Of the eight players listed, three are left-backs. Sol Campbell appears despite not being under contract with the club - as we speak he’s sunning himself on his honeymoon.

Our full-backs are fine, but the middle looks very light. No-one will shed a tear over Sylvestre’s departure, but I’m amazed that the loss of William Gallas has passed with so little comment. Currently on the books we have Vermaelen, new-boy Koscielny, and Johan Djourou. Of those, only Vermaelen is a reliable known quantity. Arsenal.com are trying to reassure us. Djourou is “ready to step up”, they tell us, failing to mention the likelihood of Djourou injuring himself in the process of stepping anywhere. Koscielny apparently “relishes the physical side of the game”, despite being thinner than Arsene himself and having tiny little arms like a dinosaur.

I don’t want to come down too hard on the new boy before I’ve seen him in competitive action, but the chances of him being immediately ready for the rigours of elite Premier League football seem slim. Nearly as slim as him. People compare his signing to that of Vermaelen, but Vermaelen was playing European football as captain of Ajax and a regular Belgium international. Koscielny is uncapped, and until twelve months ago had never played regularly in the top flight.

Djourou definitely has potential, but relying on a player who has missed a year with injury seems somewhat irresponsible of Arsene. We didn’t immediately throw Rosicky back in, and we sold Eduardo. Why should Djourou be exempt?

Sol Campbell may well elect to stay at the club. I hope he does. His leadership and desire set an example to others. But even though he will be part of the playing staff, I don’t feel his signing should make any impact on the shape of the squad. Yes, he’ll play the odd game, but I view Campbell as a figurehead and a leader - not necessarily from the pitch. He is not capable of playing two games in a week, let alone a prolonged spell across the season.

Havard Nordtveit is likely to be drafted in to provide cover at right-back and centre-half, but there’s still not a single player I deem worthy of partnering Vermaelen in a supposed title-challenging squad. Last season Vermaelen and Gallas formed a fairly effective partnership - most of our most notable collapses occurred when at least one of the pair was missing. To improve on last season, we need a player who can at least match Gallas for pace, positioning, power and good old-fashioned Premier League experience. Djourou, Koscielny, and Campbell all have disparate qualities which might help plug those gaps, but we need a player who can do all of those things, all of the time.

I’d like to name names, but frankly that isn’t my job. There are scouts that Arsenal employ specifically to meet that need, and they’ll do far better than me and my Football Manager search engine. The Daily Mail seems determined to draw a line between us and Everton’s Phil Jagielka - I have doubts about the validity of those rumours, but he’d certainly fit the bill.

My deep fear and suspicion is that signing Campbell will be enough for Arsene. Last summer we noted when Vermaelen arrived that he’d be unlikely to spend €10m on a centre-half and then not play him; Kolo Toure was promptly sold. The same applies to Koscielny, and I expect him to be given the chance to compete with Djourou for a starting place.

Finally, we come to goalkeeper. If there was one position where Arsenal seemed certain to strengthen this summer, it was here. Manuel Almunia’s topsy-turvy season saw him twice dropped from the team, and at the backend of the season he disappeared from the squad entirely. I am, I must admit, a little surprised he’s still here now.

In his absence, Lukasz Fabianski made the erratic Almunia’s goalmouth look like an ocean of calm. Rarely in my time watching Arsenal have I seen such a string of costly mistakes. The only thing reliable about the Pole was his guaranteed gaffe, usually from a corner or set-piece, though not exclusively - like all great clowns, Fabianski has variety to his routine - see mistakes against Porto for evidence.

Beyond that pair are Vito Mannone and Wojciech Szczesny. Mannone played a few games last season at the height of our keeper crisis, and received plaudits when Fulham conspired to kick the ball repeatedly against him when scoring seemed markedly easier. I don’t consider him a serious contender for the number one jersey. Ever.

Szczesny is a little different. His performances at Brentford brought plaudits and promises from Arsene that he’d one day wear the number one shirt. Perhaps he will. But at just 20, surely it’s too soon.

Worryingly, Arsene seems as certain that Fabianski will one day be number one. And unless a signing is made, that could be now. The elder Pole has started both pre-season friendlies, and indications from inside the club are that the manager is seriously toying with the idea of beginning the season with him in the number one jersey. Rather than something more appropriate, like a straightjacket.

We know that Arsene has made some moves to sign a keeper. His faith in Fabianski is & Co is so unwavering that he seemingly wishes only to bring in an experienced keeper to act as a stop-gap for the next year or two - hence his interest in Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer. Schwarzer might not be Peter Schmeichel, but he’s a hell of a lot better than what we’ve got. He’s communicative, athletic, and good for another two years at the top level. If Arsenal were able to find an agreement with Fulham, I’d be delighted. But more importantly, I’d be relieved.

More than any other position at the club, it is goalkeeper where a signing is imperative. A high profile arrival like Igor Akinfeev would be ideal. But I’d take a stop-gap like Schwarzer or David James, who is available on a free transfer. I’d take an experienced head who could give the position some stability and stop the role of Arsenal goalkeeper from becoming what I fear Fabianski could make it - a joke.

It’s absolutely clear what this squad needs: a top level goalkeeper, and a top level centre-back. Arsene cannot be blind to that either. My fear is that he’ll plump for a man who used to be a top class centre-back, and a guy who he believes could one day be a top-class keeper. In essence, a player who if not “over the hill” has certainly passed over its highest point, and a player who is not yet good enough, and may never be.

Jagielka and Schwarzer aren’t huge names, but believe me - they’d give us a better chance than our current options. Arsene has to learn the meaning of compromise - he may have to pay a little more than he’d like, he may have to go for the player second or third on his list, but he must, must strengthen in those positions. Keeping Cesc only to fail to provide him with a fitting defensive platform would be as great a crime as selling him.

This could well be Arsene’s last year. I’d hate for reticence in the transfer market to render it redundant.

great article, not up your own a*se and grounded opinions

I dont know what is funnier, you Gooners paying 15m for Jagielka or actually thinking that Wenger would sign an English player. If Jags is worth 15m at the age of 27, Jamie Carragher must have been worth nearly 30m at that age…

agree .. great article. One of the best articles I had read last month.

  • 4. 5Times  |  July 26th, 2010 at 1:49 am

If i were an Arsenal fan, I would be praying night and day that Akinfeev would make his way to the Emerites. If you lot sign him, your goalkeeper issue will be sorted out for years to come.

  • 5. Kipmonster  |  July 26th, 2010 at 2:14 am

The last few years have been like Groundhog Day as we all at the end of the season repetitively say we need a top class Centre Back & Goalkeeper and the fact the stubborn Mr Wenger hasn’t done it is ridiculous.

One of the most balanced articles in months. THANK YOU. I am totally sick of reading all the drivel posted by emotional and reactive so-called Arsenal fans who seem driven by the desire to spend, spend, spend on everyone and anyone. They obviously have little real knowldege of what is going on and seem to base their arguments on information from very dubious sources indeed . Their jollies seem to come from slagging off everyone else on blogs.

At last, a well thought out and well written article - phew, I thought logic and common sense had all but departed this blogging world - not to mention the English language!

  • 7. Kipmonster  |  July 26th, 2010 at 2:16 am

I propose that Arsenal fans World wide post letters once a week for the next four weeks to UEFA & FIFA complaining about Barcelona FC’s ‘tapping up’ of Cesc Fabregas. Also post a letter just once to Arsenal FC requesting that they formally complain to UEFA & FIFA. I have drawn up 3 template letters that I will email to willing participants. All you need to do is type in your own Name & Address before printing off & posting. Momentum will be boosted by you forwarding the email to every one of your Arsenal FC fan family & friends, encouraging them to participate.
The aim of repetitive letters is to create an Admin headache for UEFA & FIFA with thousands of letters received from all over the world & display the strength of feeling from Arsenal FC fans. The purpose of the single letter to Arsenal FC is again to display the strength of feeling from us fans.
My email address for this campaign from where I will email you the letter templates is …….. ArsenalFansHateBarcelonaFC@gmail.com

we really need 2 more players to win the lot next year,a keeper and a proper cb,if wenger does not sign players in these positions than i hope its his last year, because if he cant see it were f*ckd and he needs to go

  • 10. GBG gooner  |  July 26th, 2010 at 2:33 am

I really appreciate ur article, as u dont fear to give both pros and cons straight from ur heart. BUut I dont aggre with all (suprise..).

    The key points I agree with are these;

1, AW allows his belief in some players gets them in the squad, not their own performance. This part of his philosophy I dont support. In this way he destroys the good things about his talent development policy, and makes experienced peps doubt AWs desire to really make sure we compete for honours.

    2. We desperatly need a defender. We have lost Gallas, a big reason to our struggling last year was because he missed out a lot. this lad has been world class for us since loosing captaincy. We have nothing that will replace his lvl in our squad, if vermalen is injured we are completely doomed.
I’d like campbell to stay, but he cant play all games, why we still need a solid partner to Vermanator.

    3. We need a new goalie. Not as much as a defender I would say, but we need just the same. AW seems determined to go a long way to prove his high-belief in players was no mistake, why we in recent years have had to witness underpermorning “AW pets” given a new chance again and again. I hope Fabianski will not get it, but it is likely he will.

When we lost Flamini, Hleb and Gilberto, and AW replaced them with completly unproven Song, Denilson and Diaby, still claiming we would go for titel, I understood he is so keen to nurse his project, and prove doubters wrong that he tries to adjust reality to his beliefs and actions, not the opposite.

Arsenal destroyed 2-3 golden years when they let all 3 go, especially flamini. there is no excuse what so ever, 2 of them didnt even give us transfer money.

If Wenger doesn’t buy a sollid defender & classy keeper he will prove this shortcomming of his is not temporary, and might infact lead to him leaving after a nother failed season.

    No to the point I didnt agree with;

    Midfield;
with a medium optimist mind, we have 3 attacking mdfls ready to shine; Cesc, Arshavin and Nasri. Is that a lot? nope, and unfortunatly the gap to Roscky, Diaby, Walcott, Wilshere is considerable. Ramsey should not be considered at all, he needs time.

What we need? replace Rosicky, he has lost his edge on this lvl, and buy a new “Rosicky”, att midf will be our key this year, even more than last year, both RVP and Chamakh will make sure for that.

    so conclusions,
buy top-lvl central defender and goal keeper, and replace Rosicky with a similar type, like Ozil.

If we don’t do this, we will not win anything again, maybe make CL again, and AW will resign as manager. I dont want to sound negative, but if AW is continuing his do or die approach on his project he will fail, which would be such an utter waist of AWs geniality and obvious squad talent, as he has always been only a few classy signings away from complete success.

  • 11. Gooner4life&beyond  |  July 26th, 2010 at 3:55 am

Pretty good except for your comments on Mannone, they were so biased it was ridiculous. He kept about four (4), yes four clean sheets in his brief period as goalie. Don’t be so condescending, all of Fulham’s shots were not straight at him. He did well and deserves a chance over Fabianski any day of the week.

  • 12. Ray in SF  |  July 26th, 2010 at 4:34 am

are we well-stocked in attack? no real width, no real winger-types, less than optimal crosses from our attacking full backs

isn’t crossing the ball a trainable skill?

and all the more important because we brought in somebody, Chamakh, that looks really good in the air

you were very hard on Fabianski & Mannone

that said, we do need a world class goalkeeper, not a stop gap relying on Chesney to make good,

we also need a monster CB to take care of the Drogbas of this world, if this is possible on a reliable basis,

and we need an enforcer in midfield if we want respect from the Chelseas down to the Stokes of this league

the exciting thing is that we have the money to fix the fixable, I hope Wenger has the will

  • 13. dan gunner  |  July 26th, 2010 at 6:03 am

  • 14. a  |  July 26th, 2010 at 6:06 am

great article, i think wenger will buy one more defensive player and that will be it - we will see fabianski as no.1 with chesney on the bench at anfield

  • 15. Baba k  |  July 26th, 2010 at 6:37 am

A very good one. From all what i have seen, for d past 6 to 5 season, it is high time wenger was sack. What are we still doing with a man who can not deliver. Am sorry 2 say, we what is on asenal now, there is nothing for us this coming season

u r right Manone never good enough, but faby could be, liega warsaw player of the season twice but playing every week he needs to go on loan to prem club, aliminiun has never will never be good enough championship side if he is lucky

  • 20. Anonymarse  |  July 26th, 2010 at 8:22 am

Why do people waste their time writing blogs like this ? Why do we waste our time reading them ? Roll on the end of the transfer window, then you can assess the squad. Doing it now is just pissing in the dark…

  • 21. Melbgunner  |  July 26th, 2010 at 8:36 am

The one player I’d like to see Wenger go after is Vincent Kompany - he should have bought him a few years ago but deal fell through…he’ll be rotting on the Man City bench next season with all their players and I read they needed to drop their squad size by at least 10 players so surely we can tempt them with an offer!!! Perfect fit at CB and DM cover also…come on Arsene you know it makes sense!!!

  • 22. Lanesra89  |  July 26th, 2010 at 10:18 am

The goalkeeper “crisis” has been with us since Lehmann left or basically before that as we knew Jens was leaving and yet did nothing about it. From the day i saw Almunia come galloping out of his box to shake hands with someone in the east stand vs Man Utd in a 4-2 defeat while United ripped us apart it was clear that he was not the answer. All the teams that have won the title have had a quality keeper. And while we have these guys between the sticks we will never win anything. Shotstoppers they may well be pretty good at, but basic keeping, commanding the area like a schmichel did they are not even close. and its the basic things these keepers lack. When was the last time our keeper saved us points, or gained us points? Would it have been a 2-1 win vs our friends down the high road when he saved a pikey keane penalty?…and before that?? who knows, who can remember? no-one. Lets get a decent keeper in, that way our defence (who are a good defence) can concentrate on defending and not crapping themselves when the ball goes near our keeper. everything else is in place to win a trophy this year, just buy a decent keeper Arsene, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez

  • 23. Daryl Booth  |  July 26th, 2010 at 11:12 am

    Another sterling article sir,

I would argue that the `Gallas leaving with little comment` may be tied to his temperament more than his experience.
For all the good he does in terms of defensive work rate I can never forget his Neville Southall styled `sit in` at the Birmingham game when Eduardo suffered that horrific challenge that effectively ended his Arsenal career.

There has always been for me a hint of `unbalance` in Gallas and his mental approach. Rumoured to have had rifts with other players, I for one although wishing him well in his future endeavours, will shed more of a tear for the man Eduardo..
Love your blog sir as always.

  • 24. SK  |  July 26th, 2010 at 11:20 am

    Spot on.

1 GK - Akinfeev or Stelkenburg ((the dutch GK)

1CB - Not only Sol. Get another one. Mertesacker..

    and 1 DM..

please not diaby and denilson. Those guys should be benched because they are lazy and lacking any motivation..

    Ozil would be fantastic.

  • 25. the_ice_man  |  July 26th, 2010 at 11:46 am

Djourou has the potnetial to act as cover in defancive midfiled (he played there when on loan at Birmingham). Therefore if we were to sign anouther center back plus Sol, there would still be an adiquate number of games for all to play.

  • 26. GETA  |  July 26th, 2010 at 12:17 pm

everyone cant take another trophy-less campaign, another one of arsene’s out-dated remarks in buying players” he’s gifted, mental ability if great…” we need a defensive midfielder and a keeper and one more defender. per mertesacker would be perfect to partner vermalen like adams. a perfect team is made up of quick in reaction strikers and natural finishers, the ones who dont have to look up to see where the goal post is, extremely fast and gifted midfielders, overmas” and big strong defenders and a keeper. i cant take another chelsea defeat due to physical presence , man u defeat due to error in judgement for keepers and defenders .
we need to win something this season.

  • 27. Yibaebi clever  |  July 26th, 2010 at 12:39 pm

i really want to comment on Cesc Fabregas, I ples him to stop the reasoning of moving to Barca, because he will never be a leader in barca as he is in Arsenal, i know its good playing with ur brothers in the same club but the chance u have in playing full match at Arsenal, u will not have that chance in Barca,or u will not be playing ur mind role. For the manager Wenger,I ples him tu add one midfielder, Sir i will be very happy, if this request is considerately approve.

A decent goalkeeper such as Akinfeev and a composed centre back like Jagielka to partner Vermalean is all we need for next season provided Fab 4 is staying.

  • 30. Aamir  |  July 26th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Really good article.. One of the better ones I’ve read over the month. What I fear about transfers is that if a player doesn’t fit in there’s gonna be waste. And more importantly the pressure of winning the title is gonna be on us more than any other team. I’m hoping the team can handle it.

  • 31. gunner.cy  |  July 26th, 2010 at 1:04 pm

mertesacker and stekeler are the best option i think.please WENGER, buy them!! good luck from cyprus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This site has really fallen in recent times. This article is poor, anyone could have written this. You say you are not going to name names, then talk of Akinfeev, Ozil etc.

Get rid of Rosicky for a new Rosicky. Such insight. Go on any forum anywhere to see similarly ill thought ‘reviews’.

Why not just NOT publish anything if you are struggling to find anything to write about?

  • 33. RealTalkFootball  |  July 26th, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Excellent post, Arsene Wenger needs to sort it out, and stop aiming for these low budget players.

If Arsenal are in a position of financial fruition as they go on about every year, then buy a world class goalkeeper, or frankly a half decent one, as the options available are a joke.

Also a centreback is a necessity. Mertesacker, Jagielka, Cahill, Mexes, Issac Vorsah, anyone would fit the bill.

If they dont move soon, the Gunners will just be another team battling for 4th place

  • 34. the beast  |  July 26th, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Totally agree with this article. I really hope AW puts his parsimonious streak to one side and at a bare minimum gets a decent goalie, I suppose Schwarzer is an improvement but we should be aiming a bit higher than that. Also it would be madness not to sign another centre back and a player capable of playing the holding role - if Song gets injured I do not fancy our chances of being successful if Denilson has to play there for any extended period of time. Denilson is too lightweight (in terms of quality) to play against the top teams and too lightweight (in terms of physicality) to play against the cloggers - Stoke, Blackburn etc.

I also couldn’t agree more with your thoughts about Fabianski being a complete joke - I would be pretty cross if he starts the season at no.1, he is undoubedly the worst goalkeeper in the Premier League and why he is playing at a club like Arsenal and being given chance after chance is completely beyond me. Think about the welfare of the club Arsene, don’t worry too much about Fabianski’s bruised ego.

  • 35. Pro39  |  July 26th, 2010 at 2:20 pm

    Well written sir.

I would most definitely agree with the current need of the hour - a reliable and experienced cb with a respected gk.

However, I’d like to see more done to get someone like Richards in - young and strong, rather than just young. Respect in the epl hinges over pure physical strength as well.

  • 38. nasri8cesc4lunch  |  July 26th, 2010 at 9:18 pm

very well said; i fully agree. with chamakh arriving on a free transfer and laurent koscielny came for around 10m we should have a nice chunk of cash to spend. i have always admired wenger for sticking to his philosophies, and he still can, but with somewhere between 20 and 30m to spend (supposedly) i don’t see why we can’t land a defender of cahill’s quality as i haven’t heard of many other english cb’s for sale worthy of our attention. the keeper issue concerns me but as you said i’m sure the boss will put someone solid back there if he hopes to keep his captain. the only other spot i’d look to improve is defensive midfield only because song picks up yellows quite frequently and his absence played a huge role in messi’s performance in the second leg of the cl quarterfinal.

things seem to be shaping up nicely for next season my only quarrel is the prospect of el nino wearing blue come the second week of august.
